It’s official: Taxpayers will now fund DC abortions
Feminist.org highlighted reasons pro-aborts are heralding Obama’s signing of the spending bill.
President Barack Obama signed the FY 2010 Omnibus Appropriations bill, which includes several major gains for women’s health and civil liberties, yesterday….
The legislation eliminates traditional sources of funding for abstinence-only programs and instead provides funding for “a new evidence-based teenage pregnancy prevention initiative.” The bill calls for $114.5 million to be appropriated for the new programs, which will include age appropriate and medically accurate information on both contraception and abstinence. The funds will be distributed through the new Office of Adolescent Health under the Department of Health and Human Services.
The District of Columbia also made major gains with the passage of the bill. A provision that would eliminate a long-time prohibition on using DC-raised monies for abortion assistance within the District is in the final legislation as well as a provision overturning a ban on medical marijuana in the District…. The ACLU has worked for an end to the abortion funding ban for years….
The article noted one dark spot for the other side, that a permanent repeal of the Mexico City policy got axed in the final bill.

Who is getting abortions in DC?
Politicians’ mistresses?
Arghhhh!
Jill, Thanks for all you do for life. Theses stories just get more depressing every day. God bless you.
Janet, most of the abortions will probably be done on poor black women, with nary a peep from the black church or the so-called black “leadership.” Look for abortions in D.C. to go up by 25 percent, at the very least. That “reverend” from the Religious Coalition for Reproductive Rights must be leaping for joy. Yes, it is depressing.
All we can do is keep these women and babies in our prayers and go to the polls in 2010 and 2012.
So far, Ben Nelson is standing strong in the face of opposition to pass Health Care without explicit abortion language preventing the use of federal funds.
I just sent him an email commending him for his stand for Life.
Wow, I gotta get more sleep. The above post should read:
So far, Ben Nelson is standing strong against his party’s pressure to vote for the current Health Care bill which does not contain explicit language prohibiting the use of federal dollars to be used for abortion.
Oh yes, as if “women’s health and civil liberties” in DC have been suppressed and oppressed up until now.
*eyeroll*
What they surely *meant* to say was “several major gains for those who prey on women’s desperation and squelch the civil liberties of the preborn.” Uh huh.
I figured out something positive to do –look up some CPC’s in the DC area and send a small donation!
Or a big donation!! :)
Gee, I wonder if our “pro-choice” president will support school choice. Certainly if he supports a woman’s “right to choose” he will equally support a D.C.’s parents right to choose what school to send their children to. Last I heard the school choice program in D.C. was closing down.
Parents can choose to dispose of their children but they can’t choose what schools to send the children they choose to have to.
Phillymiss and Carla,
Donations – great idea. It’s a shame that most of the BIG donations come from liberal foundations like the Bill Gates Foundation for pro-abortion groups and not to Crisis Pregnancy Centers.
Mary,
It’s a shame what’s going on in the schools in DC. I think the “charter schools” were closed. Talk about discouraging. It really seems like the liberals (black and white) are trying their hardest to keep the poor black population from succeeding.
It’s tempting to get depressed about this. But let’s not.
Elsewhere today I quoted M.Scott Peck’s, The Road Less Traveled-on evil. There is another passage I’d like to share that has always given me hope, especially when dealing with runaway teens and teen prostitutes in Times Square for seven years.
“But evil backfires in the big picture of human evolution. For every soul it destroys-and there are many-it is instrumental in the salvation of others. Unwittingly, evil serves as a beacon to warn others away from its own shoals. Because most of us have been graced by an almost instinctive sense of horror at the outrageousness of evil, when we recognize its presence, our own personalities are honed by the awareness of its existence. Our consciousness of it is a signal to purify ourselves. It was evil, for instance, that raised Christ to the cross, thereby enabling us to see Him from afar. Our personal involvement in the fight against evil in the world is one of the ways we grow.”
And might I add that I’ve come to admire the giants here.
The answer, especially in DC and the inner city, is to be relentless in the positive message we give to girls. We’ll win them for the long term when we convince them more of their intrinsic value and preciousness than we will with dire warnings of abortion’s consequences. For so many, it just takes someone believing in them to turn their lives around.
Peck is right about evil serving as a beacon to warn others off of its own shoals. Look at how Obama’s base is fracturing. Our best hope is a Republican House in 2010 to blunt any more of his legislative agenda, and turn him into a lame duck for the second half of his first (hopefully ONLY) term.
Oh, I have a question!!! ::raises hand::
How is forcing tax payers to fund abortions in Washington D.C. going to make them “rare?” Didn’t Obama spout off about that? R-A-R-E, D-U-D-E!!!
Hal? Danielle? Megs?
Hi Carla,
Can I answer? Just as with, ‘fight fire with fire”, Obama wants to fight abortion with abortion. By reducing the population, even if the percentage of the population having abortions remains the same, the absolute numbers will decline.
Do I get an A, or my knuckles wrapped with a ruler? ;-)
I was kinda looking for the answer
HE LIED!! :)
But you get an A for effort!!

Gerard,
This hits home with me. Mentoring is something we as individuals can do. We can support boys’ and girls’ homes that take in children who come from horrible home situations. Where I live the suburban high schools bring children from the inner city out to the suburban high school to show them life outside of their neighborhoods and to encourage conversation between the groups. Maybe they already do this – but it might be an interesting project if the schools could facilitate pen-pal relationships between girls in both schools (girls that age love that sort of thing). When I was in Catholic grade school, the nuns set up a similar program with girls in an African school and girls in my school. It was a great experience and gave us a view to the larger world.
