Now, Common is far from a Republican and “Retrospect for Life” serves as a conflicted, debate piece about abortion – in which both sides are represented – but several of its lines should give Sarah Palin and other conservatives some common ground with Common.
~ Baltimore Sun journalist Luke Broadwater, commenting on rapper Common’s 2008 pro-life themed song, “Retrospect for Life,” May 11
Common, an invited guest to the White House’s “Night of Poetry” event on May 11, has been criticized for past performances that allegedly contain violent and inappropriate lyrics.

“Use self control instead of birth control”- I’m not much of a rap fan, but there are some gems in this one. Thank you for sharing!

The overall message was thoughtful. (I suggest reading the lyrics to catch every word.) He should do some public service announcements against abortion. If not him, someone in the arts should, please! I didn’t hear how the White House poetry reading was received…. was there anything controversial?

It was tame, from what I’ve read.
But I read a few selections of his other releases. Let’s just say the language was rather, um, salty.
It galls me to think that someone with that type of language is held up as a “poet” in the White House.
Local bar, fine. But the White House???

The song was released in 1997, not 2008. I remember, because it came out when I was in high school. :-)

What about accidents people ? If, when I was 18 years old, the condom broke and my girlfriend went pregnant. Without a job, a home or a plan, should I keep the baby and jeopardize HIS futur and his health because I could barely feed him let alone be a good father ?? I agree that abortion is something you want to avoid as much as possible, but please, imposing a law on something just because SOME stupid girls are not careful and receive 7 abortions in their life, that’s just plain dishonest. I’m guessing you’re the same kind of people that’s gonna push for extra taxes on fast food just because a lot of americans are unable to control their rations. Educate your children people, there will ALWAYS be a price to pay to live in a free society, your ideas are dangerous to your freedom. Remember that a corrupt government will always remove your liberties with the excuse of protecting you. Be careful
