Animal lover equates elk shooting with Newtown massacre
I don’t see a whole lot of difference between the shooting of this defenseless elk and the shooting of school children in Connecticut.
~ Unnamed female attendee at a vigil for an elk (nicknamed “Big Boy,” “George,” and “Elmo” by neighborhood residents) shot by a Boulder, Colorado off-duty police officer, as quoted by CBS News, January 7

As a vegetarian and animal rights supporter, this person does NOT speak for me. Good lord.

It’s logical enough if you believe that they have a common ancestor (not Adam, obviously).

I heard Elk tastes pretty good! I love animals… right next to my mashed potatoes and corn.

False. Nothing makes that statement “logical” except a loathing of one’s fellow man. Period.

P.S. I like my red meat bloody rare. I wonder how the author of this quote enjoys eating their school children?

Xalisae, I also love my red meat bloody rare. I literally crave it at certain times. I’ve never tried elk though but I would love to.
I don’t care if people are animal rights folks but it does irritate me when they cry over roadkill but support legalized abortion.

Where this happened, in Boulder, CO- there is a late term abortion clinic where abortions will be done up until the child is born.
A vigil for an elk and babies are being murdered down the street.

So what are the chances that this unnamed female is also pro-abortion? Does the killing of preborn children bother her as much as killing an elk?

Yep, this is Warren Hearn’s killing ground. They cry for the elk and rabidly defend him in the same breath. A few years ago, it was discovered by the local press that the local mortuary that was receiving the bodies of the babies from his abortuary were quietly giving the cremated remains to a local Catholic Parish, Sacred Heart of Mary, for dignified burial in their cemetery. They also have a wonderful memorial to the unborn. When the news hit town, the people there howled with indignant outrage and protested the parish before Mass. That’s when I moved out of Boulder. It is a morally unhinged town in the worst way.

Nicely said Jen. I think the difference for much of the pro-choice crowd is that killing an elk doesn’t help alleviate the consequences of promiscuity, whereas killing preborn children does.

While animals should be treated with dignity, HUMANS are worth more than “many sparrows” or even “many elks”.
Otherwise, the powerful humans will protect their chosen animals, but push around or even destroy those humans they don’t want around (like the girlfriend’s unwanted unborn child for instance).

WATCH / LISTEN to what your child might be taught at school/college.
My daughter has had a few rabid teachers PREACHING some extreme ideas. (Note that rarely do they work to offer data for their ideas…her stated impression is that these are preached from the pulpit/lectern!)

CWK–I’m ashamed of what my state has become. My husband works in Boulder, but we will never live there!
Do you have the address for the Boulder abortion mill? I need to start visiting to pray there.

x,
There are two ways to look at this story. These people looking at the elk as their “brother” or their looking at those children as equals of the elk.
From both directions, it’s nuts.

Jack, I really respect the fact that you’re a vegetarian. There are a few here, so don’t depair. I’ve been a semi-vegetarian for awhile now. I never eat red meat and rarely chicken or fish. Its hard to make the plunge when you’ve been a meat-eater for most of your life, but I’m trying.
I started to dislike red meat when I was pregnant. Just the thought of a raw, rare steak makes me sick now. I really hate the smell of pork chops, too. And Hawaiian Punch. That made me feel ill too and though my daughter is 24, I still can’t stand it!
I grew up in western New York, where there was alot of hunting going on. I remember the hunters used to have the dead deer strapped on top of their cars, eyes glazed, blood dripping from their mouths. I HATED that. My sisters and I used to cry when we saw it. I ate deeer once and didn’t like it,
I don’t judge anyone, but I wish that people would learn about how farm animals are treated. I stopped eating veal years ago (I never liked it anyway). My goal is to cut out more and more meat out of my diet until I am 100 percent vegetarian (I don’t know about cheese, though. I love grilled cheese sandwiches, and tofu just doesn’t cut it)!

mrsJVR, I don’t have the specific address. It’s on Alpine next to Boulder Community Hospital (disgusting irony). I work in Boulder as well and know several people who participate in the 40 Days outside of his kill-building.

“It’s logical enough if you believe that they have a common ancestor (not Adam, obviously).”
If Big Boy (George or Elmo) and I have the same Grampa, why is killing me any worse than killing him? If you refer me to the lower developmental level of elk, then I will refer you to the lower developmental level of pre-born people.
If, however, people were created like God but animals were not, then killing people is worse than killing animals. After Adam and Eve sinned and brought death into the world, God Himself gave the animals to them as clothing and food.

I’m with Jack. The loss of animal life is not something to take lightly, but this goes too far. However we don’t know – perhaps the speaker is pro-life and is over-elevating animals rather than devaluing humans.

Do it do it. I have faith in you! And don’t worry I still eat dairy and eggs. If I don’t I end up losing way too much weight and that’s not fun. If you want good vegetarian recipes you can ask Carla for my email and I can send you some of my faves.
I was just kidding about people disgusting me, but the description of eating meat honestly does gross me out. I just don’t understand why it’s appealing and never will. I started hating meat when I wasl like six or seven I think, but my mom forced me to eat it until I was about twelve. Blech. I think it’s so gross.
And people killing Bambi makes me sad, even if I can see hunting might be necessary for population reasons.

Let’s not get sidetracked entirely; I’m still finding the quote itself rather bizarre!
The person who shot up the kids at school was certifiably mentally ill, and not the garden-variety that’s sitting next to you at the dentist’s office. The poor animal was not killed out of someone’s sickness, but was an event of opportunity. The animal’s death was not premeditated; the cop didn’t kill his own mother before he went ‘hunting.’ There is absolutely NO similarity except that a firearm was used to kill the animal. Both men were wearing shoes too, does that make them similar? NO.
I find that post-abortive pro-abortion people can sometimes have a pathologically high regard for animals. I love animals, I do. I was a vegetarian for many years and used to bring home every stray that came within a mile of my neighborhood. But I know the difference between an animal and a person. Some post-abortive women especially throw every shred of care and compassion they can muster toward members of the animal kingdom, and I think that’s because they are understandably uncomfortable around vulnerable human beings. How many post-abortive crazy cat ladies love babies as much as they love cats? I’m betting almost none.
The term for this misplaced emotion is called “transferral.” It is in fact one of the only points on which I agree with the otherwise very incorrect Dr. Freud.

I see your point, but deer can cause a great deal of damage to crops and are actually pretty destructive. It’s a shame their natural predators (wolves) were wiped out. You don’t fool with Mother Nature!
I see deer in my backyard once in awhile (for those of you in or near Philly, I live near Pennypack Park). My cats were looking at them in growling. Um, kitties, that deer could kick you to the moon!
Back to the main point, I do love animals, but I NEVER equate human life with animal life. Wasn’t it Ingrid Newkirk who said “a boy is a dog is a pig?” Uh, no!

I think we shouldn’t speculate upon the speaker’s view on abortion. In fact, I wish people would deal with an issue at hand without bringing in another. I’m tired of people saying, “Oh, so you’re against circumcision/hunting/spanking/capital punishment? You people are the same ones who support abortion!” Well, no, they’re not, necessarily, and, even if they are, that doesn’t affect whether they’re right or wrong about circumcision/hunting/spanking/capital punishment.
As for this case, I dislike the idea of lowering our respect for human beings to the level at which we treat non-human animals, but less uncomfortable with the idea of elevating non-human animals to the level at which we (should) treat human beings.

phillymiss,
Deer overpopulation is a major problem. The Pennypack area is to be expected, as is Tyler State Park, where they have an uproar every year that hunting is allowed.
In the suburbs you only need a couple of acres of woods between neighborhoods to see groups of deer many mornings and evenings. And it seems like there are reports of deer entering stores through the automatic doors all the time!
