New reality show will feature rapper, his 11 kids, and his 10 baby mamas
“‘All My Babies’ Mamas’ will be filled with outrageous and authentic over-the-top moments that our young, diverse female audience can tweet and gossip about”….
Oxygen’s one-hour special in development is not meant to be a stereotypical representation of everyday life for any one demographic or cross section of society. It is a look at one unique family and their complicated, intertwined life.
Oxygen Media’s diverse team of creative executives will continue developing the show with this point of view.
~ Statement by Oprah Winfrey’s network Oxygen, justifying it’s upcoming reality TV show “All My Babies’ Mamas”, which features rapper Shawty Lo, his 11 children, and their 10 mothers in Atlanta.

Glorifying stupidity is so unattractive. LL

I think they have the right approach. The father’s irresponsibility will speak for itself no matter what. Consciously portraying the family as a freak show would only stigmatize the children, who obviously are not at fault.

It’s still “the right approach” to a horrible situation. :/

What I’ve always wondered about things like this is, do these women not know that they deserve so much better than this?? :(

This is a kind of in effect polygyny. We’ve seen the fictional “Big Love” and the reality program “Sister Wives.” Doesn’t anyone else see the similarity?

If “love makes a family,” what’s the big deal?

Are these women to be admired for carrying their pregnancies to term instead of having abortions?

The big people act irresponsibly. A baby should die, intentionally, because of that?

(Denise) I’m asking if you admire these women because they carried their babies to term.

Can reality tv get any lamer?

Common in Muslim countries, but only among the rich. Here, it looks a lot like polygamy.

I’m never going to understand why anyone cares about these type of shows or why they are popular. Seems like a huge waste of time.

I know, it’s like they only exist so people can hate them and wonder what society’s coming too, etc.

I don’t care if adults choose to do reality shows, but filming children for this trash in unacceptable.

Do you feel the same way about the Duggars?

Polygamy now! Seriously, if I had 10 husbands, I’d be living on an expansive manicured lawn, my car would run like a dream, all the critters would be fed…

(Denise) What is usually discussed is polyGYNY as in “Big Love” and “Sister Wives” in which one male has sole sexual access to multiple wives.
PolyANDRY exists but is much rarer. Most anthropologists believe that special circumstances, such as a need to consolidate resources and/or frequent male absence from a home base, are necessary to lead this marital system to evolve.

Well, here’s the thing. If gay people, and I have a lot of gay friends who feel this way, want to have a marriage with the same legal conditions of inheritance, etc. as heterosexuasl: we get polygamy.
If marriage is being redefined, then polygamy is back on the menu. It’s only fair, and besides, with all the missing women who’ve been aborted before birth or killed by infanticide, the ratio of men to women is becoming uneven in some populations. It won’t always be possible for one man to have a woman all to himself. Polygamy now!

I think they are boring, too. But judging from the way some women at my workplace talk about “Real Housewives of Atlanta,” it might be a success.
Just another negative depiction of black folks (sighs, shakes head). For the record, neither me, my daughter, or two sisters have EVER been baby mommas.

I totally agree phillymiss, the show sounds boooring, degrading to women and “just another negative depiction of black folks” IMO.
The lack of self-respect is heart-breaking to me. Women don’t know how, valuable and special they are. They need to know the God that created them, loves them and calls them to be “chosen of God, and precious, a royal priesthood, a chosen generation, a holy generation, a set apart people that are meant to show and display the praises of God who has called them out of darkness into his marvellous light”. They need to know that they are ”bought with a great price”. When you don’t know your divine purpose you will walk in dysfunction and degradation and not even realize it. For many in the audience who watch them they will be an object of scorn and ridicule. Maury Povich and Jerry Springer gone wild, where people laugh at you not with you. I hope people will not watch so it will go off the air quickly. I pray that God will send someone to minister to these people.

Are you sure?
It’s certainly beneath human dignity. But some people’s choices take them beneath human dignity. What does the word “deserve” mean when you choose something so insane?
At any rate, this is precisely the opening sequence in the movie Idiocracy.

JDC, that’s why I’m ever so grateful we don’t have a TV. We had access to cable on our anniversary vacation…. and used it once. To watch reruns of the Cosby Show. Everything else was absolute garbage, like this.
I just will never understand why complete junk like this, Jersey Shore, Honey Boo Boo (whatever the heck that is – I’ve heard but rumors, and the rumors chill me to the bone), Desperate Housewives, etc., are popular. I just absolutely don’t get it.
*goes back to my books*

At the risk of losing my man card once and for all I will say I quite liked Desperate Housewives when it was still on. It’s pretty ridiculous and hilarious. I also like Grey’s Anatomy. #misdirectedfandom #shamefulconfession.

Jack, I can’t speak for SM, but I don’t think the Duggar kids should be filmed, either. I have a major problem with all “reality” TV programs, where you’ve got camera crews filming your kids nonstop. What kind of a childhood is that?
I mean, I can respect the Duggars for their decision to live outside the norm, and have lots of kids, but their decision to make a reality TV show about it just seems like a bad idea. :( But maybe that’s just me.
It’s similar to blogs. I think bloggers who put too much info about their kids is a little much. A little info is fine, but ages, names, thousands of pics, and blow-by-blow tantrum reports is a little much.

That’s pretty much my issue with that. I may have personal differences with their life choices, but it ain’t my life so whatever. Filming the kids though. I don’t really think that’s kosher and I think it’s pretty shameful that kind of thing is so acceptable, no matter what the so-called reality show is about.

Yeah, I totally agree. It’s just sad to me. I mean, what’s the point? If their point is that they’re raising an all-natural, frugal, God-honoring family or whatever, I would ask them what is all-natural or frugal about sticking your kids’ whole lives in front of a TV camera for the American public to gawk at? That just seems like a horrible way to be raised, honestly.

Regarding the Duggars, I’ve only watched their show a couple times, but the younger kids were barely filmed in the episodes I saw. The teens were filmed quite a bit going about their daily life and interview style sitting before the camera. And the parents were filmed the most. Why have the show? Speaking for myself, I appreciated the show. It was great to get a look inside the life of a godly family. Many people don’t have that example in real life, so I think it’s a great thing to show on tv. Even if it were all scripted and not a “reality’ show at all, I would think it’s beneficial. I had a great childhood, but somewhat dysfunctional due to circumstances life dealt us. I used to LOVE the Cosby show because it showed a different kind of family life, one that I could hope for when I grew up and had kids of my own. If the Duggars show inspires someone to deal with life’s frustrations in a more patient and positive way, that’s great. I imagine that is why they agreed to the show in the first place. To me, they are an inspirational family.

(Denise) When men outnumber women greatly, it might make sense for men to share a wife. However, the result in China and elsewhere of the sex-selection abortion caused shortage of women appears to be an increase in prostitution and in some cases of forced prostitution or sexual slavery rather than polyandry. The girl shortage hasn’t been good for girls by making them more valuable as some might expect. What seems to be happening is that more young women are getting raped and kidnapped.
Ironically, abortion in some countries has led to a femicide before birth and increased the tendency toward female sexual exploitation.

I love that movie, rasqual! After watching it, I felt I should have my TL reversed beyond personal reasons and more as a duty to mankind. :P

Sure? But I’d like to think that most of us can recognize that their situation is less than optimal, and saying that out loud isn’t something terrible.

(Denise) Is this to a large extent a kind of informal polygyny like “Big Love” and “Sister Wives”?
