UPDATE 2/14, 12:06p: From Stuff.co.nz comes the news that parents of the young girl who gave birth at Zoquipan Hospital in Mexico, photo right, were not honest with authorities, either about her age or the circumstances of her pregnancy:
[P]rosecutors said Wednesday that DNA tests revealed the baby’s father is the girl’s 44-year-old stepfather and that he is under arrest.
They said an anthropological study of the girl showed she is between 12 and 13. The girls’ parents didn’t have a birth certificate for her and initially told authorities she was nine.

2/8, 12p: On January 27, a Mexican girl named only as Dafne (now age 9) gave birth to a baby girl in Jalisco state, Mexico.
According to Dafne’s mother, the baby’s father (age 17) is missing after running away. Abortion would have hidden the crime.

There is research out that shows sexual abuse at a young age can actually bring on menarche at a much earlier age. It’s likely that this little girl was abused often. :( My heart breaks for her.
I hope they can get her in a safe place, and receiving counseling. I also hope her baby, who is just as innocent as her mother, will be well cared for.

The doctors forcibly sterilized this young girl also. So much for bodily autonomy.
Sydney, really?!?! After all she’s gone through. Forcibly sterilizing her is incredibly cruel. What was their reasoning? Was someone punishing her for getting pregnant or something? How sad.

I can try to find a link. I read it on several news sites. Baby was delivered by c-section and doctors sterilized the girl as well.

When I read about this the other day on a mainstream newsite/blog nearly every comment was some version of “why didn’t she have an abortion?!” It made me sick. Obviously no one in their right minds *wants* a 9 year old pregnant, but a pregnancy is almost a salvation to children in these situations, it means the abuse comes to light and, almost without fail, the huge amount of coverage and attention brings not only top-notch medical care, but an end to the abusive situation. Frankly it’s a lot sadder to think of an abused 9 year old becoming an abused 10,11,12, 13 year old than an abused 9 year old becoming a safe 10 year old ‘mother’ (and I qualify ‘mother’ only because it’s not like these girls are required to fully parent their children). When I was younger I was reading information about the child sex trade and remember reading about a 9 year old who was coming in for an abortion, she’d had 2 previous abortions at the same clinic, her first when she was 6! And the clinic members just kept turning her right back out onto the street and back to her pimp and johns (account from India). But even in nearly any 3rd world nation an orphaned child heavy with child would have drawn the eyes of officials, charities, families, etc, and would have allowed for that girl to escape her slavery. Abortion DOES NOT help these children.
This is horrifying. I seriously hope they catch the “father” of that baby and she gets justice. Who knows how long he was abusing her.
And you notice…this little girl is still ALIVE. She didn’t die in childbirth, even at 9 years old. Not to say EVERY 9 year -old should get pregnant(Far from it!), but pro-aborts would have you believe that she just HAD to have an abortion at her age.

Just to confirm: The little girl wasn’t ‘sterilized’ exactly but they did put a 5 year form of birth control inside of her which is just as disgusting. Like this girl is sexually active by choice.
Molly, I read she had a tubal ligation during her c-section. What 5 year form of birth control would they use? You can’t put in an IUD right after giving birth. It’s all so disheartening.

That was my thought. Apparently it’s too hard to keep this little girl safe, so just make sure she doesn’t get pregnant when she gets raped? It’s disgusting.

Don’t you understand that its the pregnancy that is abhorrent, not the act of rape? The victim can be tortured, beaten, mutilated, terrorized, and even murdered and so long as she doesn’t get pregnant, we can all breathe a huge sigh of relief. Really Carla and Jack, get your priorities straight.
This whole story is so sad. This might be a case in which adoption is necessary. The child simply can’t raise a child. Perhaps both she and the baby together should be taken in by the same family — one which will try to protect her and give her back some of the childhood ripped away by the rapist.

(Denise) I don’t think it is POSSIBLE for a 9-year-old to “fully parent” another child. Babies and children need to be raised by those who have already grown up. Thus, adoption may well be necessary. That should not mean that this very young mother is cut off from the child. It might be to their mutual benefit to work out some sort of continuing relationship. Both are going to need a lot of loving, caring, responsible assistance.

DeniseNoe, historically and statistically children of very young mothers were/are raised by the grandparents as siblings, which seems to work very well as long as those grandparents were complicit in the initial crime. Here the abuser seems to be a non-family member who is actively being sought for justice. Barring (grand)parental complicity I hope this young mother gets to finish growing up with a beloved sibling added to her family. If the parents *are* complicit then, yes, I agree and hope both mom and babe get placed together in an adoptive home.
The one ‘segment’ of the population I always wanted to open my home to as an adopted parent (someday) would be a teen (or yes preteen) *and* her child.

I don’t know, the “5 year birth control” (guessing the IUD?) seems a lot less harsh than sterilization. Sure, it probably wasn’t necessary, and it’s too bad they did it against the wishes of the mother, but at least she’ll be able to have children if she wants them as an adult. Glad this poor girl and her baby are okay…
This is just wrong, Just like the 13 year old, Just because she didnt die, doesnt mean it was ok or without serious risk for her to carry a pregnancy to term. My daughter is 8, I would have marched her to an abortion clinic and then to some serious therapy. Who knows if this young girls body and develoment were affected and wont be discovered until she is older. It is never ok for a baby to have a baby. no, its not the baby’s fault, it was the rapists. To allow or force a child to carry a pregnancy victimizes her even more. An abortion would have been the most humane thing for both the girl and her baby. the 9 year old is the priority, not her rapists baby

Wouldn’t surprise me to see a news story about sarah’s daughter needing a restraining order against her to protect her child in the future like that girl in Texas.
Sarah,you might not believe in God, but rest assured that He knew what He was doing when He created our beautiful bodies. A girl becomes fertile at the age she does for a reason. It means her body is ready for it. Some girls are ready sooner than others. Does that mean all girls should get pregnant as soon as they are able? No, but that used to happen when it was important to either have a large family or families were just started sooner because people got married at much younger ages. Just Because society tries to tell women to chemically alter their bodies to return it to a pre-pubescent state (infertile cycles or in some cases, no cycles) doesn’t mean something was wrong with this young girl’s body. Something was clearly wrong with the raping stepfather.
I was going to write a comment in response to sarah’s, but I can’t even put into words how horrified her attitude makes me. Children hate abortion, and the idea that any mother would force her child to have one appals me. I hope Dafne doesn’t have anyone in her family like that. And I hope she and her child are safe and well-cared for now.
That poor girl! I hope her stepfather gets what he deserves.
I think it’s so odd that the first thought about girls who have been abused goes to pregnancy. My niece was abused. My concerns for her:
1. The girl’s physical safety.
2. Has she suffered an physical damage that requires treatment?
3. Has she contracted any diseases?
If pregnancy had been possible in my niece’s case (she was three at the time), her mother’s concern, as well as mine would have been assuring her access to the appropriate medical supervision, not subjecting her to a procedure that would have put at further risk the development of her reproductive organs.
