Catholic nun not exactly thrilled with Hobby Lobby ruling
Are Sr. Simone and NETWORK and all these women pro-abortion? Pro-abortifacients? Against religious liberty? Against the US Bishops?
That’s what this looks like, doesn’t it. Let Sr. Campbell tell us.
~ Fr. John Zuhlsdorf speculating as to why progressive nun Sister Simone Campbell would retweet a Media Matters tweet to a link that features a video montage of eight women, beginning with Sr. Campbell, explaining their objections to the recent Supreme Court ruling in the Hobby Lobby case, July 1.
The tweet reads, “8 Women Explaining Why #HobbyLobby Ruling is Wrong”
I am appalled that a Catholic nun is saying what she is saying! You are Catholic for pete’s sake! Your religion that you have chosen to follow and has made you who you are specifically is against abortion, any means of birth control and sex before marriage. She should be stripped of her sisterhood for even discussing why the ruling is “wrong”. Vatican II – thanks for causing more division and stupidity in the Catholic Church.

Simone Campbell got a prime-time speech at the Democratic National Convention to pump for Obama’s re-election.
By this time, the HHS Mandate and the “war on women” were in full bloom. The US Catholic bishops had already condemned the assault on our religious freedom.
It was obvious that Simone Campbell, supposedly a religious sister, hates the Catholic Church and the Catholics who believe our faith.
Reporters could not resist asking her about abortion (since Obama is, you know….) and Sr. Campbell answered that this was “above her pay grade.” Really?

Dear Susan: We should not blame the Council of Vatican II for Simone Campbell’s disobedience. That would be like blaming the Council of Trent for the endurance of Protestant schisms in western Christianity.
The spirit of the age has taken half or more of the people who should be faithful Catholics, and seduced them to the Culture of Death. We cannot blame Vatican II for that. It the fault of parents and bishops and self-serving religious (like Ms. Campbell) who failed to give the faith to our children.
As Catholic parents and pro-lifers, it is our own responsibility to fix it. The first thing we need to do is to get on the work of authentic implementation of Vatican II — the work of Pope St. John Paul the Great, Pope Benedict, and Pope Francis.
Simone Campbell is not “Vatican II.” She is the “leaven of the Pharisees.”

This nun is as representative of the Catholic Church as Westboro Baptist Church is of the Baptist Church.

Satan goes after those of faith. He already has the heathens and atheists, so there’s no challenge there for him. Also, he loves to taunt God and Jesus by getting those who are supposedly with God. Clearly, he got this nun. That’s a win for him. That is why we have to be ever vigilant and on guard, never letting up or he will take any chance he can to slip in.

I would have thought honesty and truth would be prime for her. Is there any reason why it shouldn’t be? She has simply pointed out the fact that judicial activism has ignored logic and the constitution. That doesn’t necessarily mean she endorses or supports abortion. And it sounds more like she’s for religious liberty to me.
Religious freedom means you having the freedom to practice your religion. It does not mean you having the freedom to impose your religion on others. This is the change which is slowly but surely taking place – the Hobby Lobby decision is a step backwards amongst the steps forward.

Obama pro-death overreach. Hobby Lobby, Congegra (sp?) Woods, Wheaton College, and the other pro-life businesses, institutions, and organizations (who have filed lawsuits against the mandate) are not “taking away” any so-called “rights” from women employees. They have never participated in the pro-death agenda of ACA, they have never offered prescriptions/procedures against their religious beliefs in their insurance plans and once HHS added the pro-death abortifacient “requirements” to ACA (it was not a part of the original bill but was added after the bill passed because the bill would not have passed with this mandate in it) they sued. You cannot take away something you never offered in the first place.

One of the more laudable things about that Catholic church is that, with obvious exceptions, it historically speaking does not cringe from intellectual diversity like a vampire from sunlight. Moreover, her “sisterhood” is a lifetime vocation. You might as well say that someone should be stripped of her marriage for arguing with her spouse. (Though, for all I know, you do.)
The real legacy of Vatican II here might be that a layman/woman thinks that his or her opinion on someone’s fitness for the religious life should matter.
they have never offered prescriptions/procedures against their religious beliefs
Hobby Lobby did.

Sisterhood is not lifetime. I have 3 sisters and an aunt who will prove that. Most orders allow resignation with a valid reason.

Religious freedom is two fold. Not only does it mean freedom to practice your religion, but also freedom from the government imposing its secular values upon your sincerely held religious beliefs.

How can they be nuns if they are not Catholic. #confused

Yes, and “She is giving someone on the internet an attack of the vapors” is not a valid reason.

For all the pretense of some people, the truth is that most Catholics use birth control, and – by far – most Catholics are in favor of other Catholics being able to do so.

Religious freedom is indeed intended to be two fold. Not only does it mean freedom for the religious to practice their religion, but also the freedom of others to not have that religion imposed on them.

Henrietta, also 100% of Catholics are sinners. So?

I refuse to give the time of day to renegade nuns who have decided their “opinion”, and that is all it is, takes precedence over the teachings of the Church. Because they are renegade they are being given prestige by the Obama administration. Can you say Nancy Pelosi or Joe Biden? Thankfully, their numbers are dwindling and the Catholic youth are overwhelmingly pro-life. So these very rebellious nuns will cling to their superstitions and their own pride reaping the reward of those who knowingly put SELF and EGO above the teachings of Christ’s Church. So much easier to kill unborn children because these nuns are getting old and don’t have the energy to care for them– and besides these children wouldn’t have much of a life anyway (I am jesting).

“Henrietta, also 100% of Catholics are sinners. So?”
This is the case whether or not a given Catholic uses birth control. For that matter, untold numbers of Catholic priests have done far worse than use contraception. “Catholic” they remain.

” Catholic youth are overwhelmingly pro-life.”
Yes, and they too overwhelmingly use birth control.
Worldwide, the number of “renegade nuns” is not “dwindling.” Notably in Africa and South America, people are getting out from under the ignorance, fear, and superstition. As more and more people get internet access, the spread of knowledge is unstoppable, and the usage of contraception increases and people are not irrevocably destined to be burdened with too many kids.
Obviously, this is not strictly in line with current Catholic doctrine, but that does not alter things – you can see what is pretty much the endpoint of the situation in North America and western Europe – almost all Catholics use birth control. The rest of the world is catching up with this.
In the very long-term, things do change. After all, Popes used to be married, to have mistresses, some even had male lovers. How would that go over, right now?
Eventually, there will either be an official change, giving the okay for contraception for Catholics, or it will cease to be an active issue, as is pretty much the case in the US, i.e. almost all Catholics use birth control, and everybody knows it, and it’s just not a front-burner issue.

Overall, the Democrats are going to benefit from the Hobby Lobby deal.
Unmarried women make up 1/4 of voters, and as a group they have been increasingly voting against Republicans over the past decades. The public perception of the “War on Women” just ratcheted up another notch, and “conservatives” are going to lose votes, once again.
As for married women, and even married Catholic women, the trend is the same. The Supreme Court’s Hobby Lobby decision is not a “narrow” one. Any private company can now claim to be “religious,” and per the Hobby Lobby decision, can seek to shirk a great many obligations, including quite a few anti-discrimination laws. The precedent is set.

That doesn’t seem to jive with the latest Rasmussen poll (released around July 3rd) which shows that the majority of people agree with the Supreme Court’s decision. I think it is 49% to 39%. The poll also shows that a majority of people consider the federal government a threat to religious freedom rather than a protector of it. How will attacking the decision help Democrats if the majority of people approve of the decision?

No to nitpick, but that’s actually a plurality as opposed to a majority.
