I felt deeply regretful about giving my body to someone who did not value me. But I didn’t learn my lesson then. Not yet. It took a sordid, soul-crushing, disgusting, short-lived “relationship” with another not-very-nice dude to really drive the point home.

After that, I vowed before God that the next time I had sex, it would be on my wedding night. And, by His Grace, I kept that promise. I was married two months ago to a man who treats me like a queen. And he was no virgin, either. He was 43 when we married. But he had learned the lesson I learned: that sexual libertinism is not liberating. It destroys you a little piece at a time….

In every society, there are two critical lists: acceptable conditions for having a baby, and acceptable conditions for having sex. From time immemorial, the one thing that almost every society had in common was that their two lists matched up.

It was only with the widespread acceptance of contraception in the middle of the 20th century, creating an upheaval in the public psyche in which sex and babies no longer went hand-in-hand, that the two lists began to diverge. And now, in 21st-century America, they look something like this:

Conditions under which it is acceptable to have sex:

• -If you’re in a stable relationship
• -If you feel emotionally ready
• -If you’re free of sexually transmitted diseases
• -If you have access to contraception

Conditions under which it is acceptable to have a baby:

Each month, a woman releases an egg (“ovum,” in science speak), which travels down one of two fallopian tubes and hangs out in the uterus for some days awaiting a sperm. If a sperm and egg meet, usually through intercourse, and connect, in a process called fertilization, a pregnancy can occur. The egg, which is a cell and thus cannot be said to have anything like feelings, does not distinguish between the sperm of a rapist and the sperm of Prince Charming.
