Eye on abortion

eye3.bmp What with the Romney "is he or isn't he" and Giuliani "he is but hates it" controversies, the media has focused more on abortion these past two weeks than it has the past year.

NARAL noted this on its blog May 14:

Judging by the first two debates and Sunday talk shows alone, choice is emerging as an especially big issue in the 2008 presidential elections.

Question is, whose side is helped more when abortion is kept in the eye of the American public?

That's actually a thought provoking question Jill!

I'll think about it at lunch.

I'm going to have to say the Republicans/conservatives. But this is just my interpretation.

Posted by: Rae at May 17, 2007 1:16 PM

it is a good question. I think it brings out the activitists in both camps. So, I suppose which ever camp is larger will benefit.

But, given that we're divided on this issue, I think it's going to be a lot of talk and drama, and little effect. (kinda like this site)

I think the pro-life side is helped, but the MSM will do everything in it's power to help the pro-choice side. Notice how the abortion question is hardy ever asked to a pro-deather who used to be pro-life.

"Notice how the abortion question is hardy ever asked to a pro-deather who used to be pro-life."

Jasper, that's because going from Pro-life to Pro-choice is a rational progression. No need to explore that in depth, it just makes sense. People mature, learn and grow. When soneone goes the other way, people are skeptical that it's "political" and not genuine. Some voters will never believe Romeny is a commmitted pro-lifer, for example.

exactly.

Having thought about it, I think it will either have no net benefit for anyone in particular or a modest benefit to liberals via a suggestion that the right is moving towards the middle on this one.

In general I think the “culture war” has reached a plateau. Using the growth of Evangelism as a proxy, there’s 1980’s exponential growth seem to have reached a saturation limit in the available spiritual market. Coinciding with that growth has been increasing political polarizations, which Americans in general think is a bad thing... whether or not they’d attribute it to evangelism. Evangelism however, is not about to suddenly diminish... so mostly I anticipate more of the same with a slight backlash because religious types are growing savvy about it the political use of such issues. Among the moderate swing voters that actually make a difference, I think they weigh many issues, and abortion is not going to be particularly important to them as the Iraq war.

"I think they weigh many issues, and abortion is not going to be particularly important to them as the Iraq war."

It's too bad because:

3,400 US dead from Iraq war, fighting against terrorist(since 2003).

~5,000,000 US killed by abortion (since 2003)

Iraqi/arabic people aren't really people??

Posted by: Cameron at May 17, 2007 4:00 PM

Obviously you would think that going from pro-choice to pro-life is a rational progression because you ARE pro-life! And obviously I would disagree with you ... seeing as I used to be a so-called "pro-lifer."

Do you know why? I was uninformed.

You can't call something "rational" just because it seems right to you. Rational has to be in more of a universal sense, you see.

And now, I am going to take a shower. Goodbye.

Leah, you read my post backwards. I'm on your side.

Posted by: Hal at May 17, 2007 4:18 PM

Haha. So I did. Sorry--it's late where I am!

But ... in case anyone else gets ideas ... I stand by what I said. :)

Keeping abortion in the public eye helps Democrats.

Most americans think right-to-lifers are nuts--just because they (RTLs) care so much about an issue that is just not that important to most americans.

Watching Rudy and Romney twist themselves into pretzels to garner the GOP nomination is turning americans off from the GOP.

Posted by: SoMG at May 17, 2007 7:53 PM

The key is to turn up the heat and use the media at their own game. They could care less about any one of us let alone babies in the womb. They care about exposure and ratings and nothing does that better than controversy.

The more controversy that can be created around abortion right now, the more we can expose it for what it really is; horrible and senseless murder.

I recommend that all future posts between now and the prez election be hard hitting and to the point, using very graphic images and detailed explanations of what abortion is.

Press on, don't let up, don't give up. Now is the time to end abortion in our land, the land God gave us and take it back.

Posted by: HisMan at May 17, 2007 7:59 PM

I am prepared at this point to make a prediction:

The Democratic nominee for Vice-President will be Bill Richardson.

Posted by: SoMG at May 18, 2007 2:15 AM

God gave white Christians the United States?
That's rich.

Posted by: Jen C Author Profile Page at May 18, 2007 6:29 AM

The answer to this is easy: Publicity on abortion helps the pro-life cause.

Pro-aborts hate publicity. Why do you think the liberal media has kept a lid on it all these years? And when it takes the lid off, it is only to perpetuate untruths, like abortion is only legal in the first 3 months.

MSM is only talking about abortion now because it thinks doing so will hurt the GOP/conservatives. Otherwise, MSM tries to ignore it.

Rudy has actually given pro-lifers a strange gift, something we covet: publicity on our topic.

Let's see if MSM grills the Democrats on abortion their next debate as it has Republicans. This should be interesting. Because to do so MSM will have to go even farther beyond the esoterics it has allowed discussed up to this point: What is pba and how in the world can you support it? Why fight parental notification? We'll be pushing for even-handedness.

Hal, going from pro life to pro choice IS NOT a rational progression. You mentioned that people grow and mature. The mature thing to do would be to realize that abortion is an extremely irresponsible act. The mature thing to do would be to accept that, and turn away from that ugly sin.Quit condoning murder.

"Let's see if MSM grills the Democrats on abortion their next debate as it has Republicans. "

Jill, your exactly right. I predict the MSM will give the Democrats a pass. Why, because their in bed with PP. This is partly why the democrats won't have a debate with Fox news.

Jen could you please point out what I have missed? In all my encounters with HisMan, I have yet to recieve any indication from him that he is white. Of course he has not hidden his religious preference, but I wonder why you would assume that Christians must be white? I know several black Christians...Rev. Jesse Jackson, anyone? Im interested in either knowing what I missed, or knowing what makes you presuppose that HisMan must be white.

Posted by: SamanthaT at May 20, 2007 12:22 PM

Good question Samantha T. I have black Christian friends too.
