On her wedding ring finger she wears a purity ring, a visual pledge to remain sexually pure until marriage.
In addition, Jordin Sparks, last week's American Idol is a pro-life advocate. Reported World magazine, in its June 2 issue:
Though only 17, Sparks is a stage veteran. How did she come so far so fast? Much of her experience has been in the service of religious groups and specifically for pro-life groups in Arizona.... work[ing] to help their cause, according to Kim Schmidt, executive director of the Phoenix-based pregnancy resource group With Child....Even while the music industry was calling, Jordin maintained contact with pro-life groups. She sang twice at an Arizona Right to Life rally in 2005.... Schmidt says she booked Jordin to sing at With Child's Rally for Life in February 2006. "She's a very kind, young Christian woman," Schmidt said. And about her performance? "She was fantastic."

Jordin, you're a double winner!
Posted by: Heather4life at June 2, 2007 6:43 AMI really hope her convictions are strong. She is about to enter the belly of the beast.
Valerie, I was wondering where you were. Hope you're okay!
Posted by: Heather4life at June 2, 2007 8:21 AMValerie, you couldn't be more right about that.
Posted by: Bethany at June 2, 2007 8:45 AMYes Valerie, I agree. It's sounds like she may have good people around her, which always helps....

I'm fine. Just alot going on. I've been lurking but haven't had much time to post.
Thanks for asking! I have missed posting!
I think Doolittle was a better singer, and I am still confused on why she got kicked off. Off topic I know...
Posted by: midnite678 at June 2, 2007 11:42 AMYou know, I'm willing to bet that if an Idol singer was pro-choice you'd say that singers have no business doing anything but singing. Wasn't it you, Heather, who said that singers and actors should stick to what they do best and stay out of politics?
Frankly, I think her personal convictions are her own, and she has every right to express them. I disagree with her, but as I don't like her voice, don't like her style of music, and thus don't listen to her, I don't particularly care. I don't even watch Idol. She's been given a powerful platform, and she absolutely should use it however she sees fit. I hope that she's aware, however, that involving personal politics with a high-profile career may have repercussions.
Posted by: HumanAbstractJordin is the real thing when it comes to pro-life and being a solid Christian. We should keep her in our prayers that the "American Idol" thing doesn't corrupt her.
Her Dad, Phillipe Sparks played at ASU and then for the New York Giants.
JD Hill (ASU and Buffalo Bills) is friends with Phillipe and since I am on JD's board, I am looking forward to meeting Jordin soon.
Posted by: HisMan at June 2, 2007 12:04 PMLess, if you want to support a pro choice star then go ahead. I can name plenty. Jennifer Aniston, Susan Sarandon, Whoopi Goldberg, Cher, Kathy Nijimy, Ashley Judd. Heck, take your pick. I like some of these women myself [as far as their acting, singing and dancing go] You could still like Jordin. You may not agree with her, but you may enjoy her singing. I like her singing, and I like what she stands for. Perhaps you may like the women I have listed even better because they are on "your side."
Posted by: Heather4life at June 2, 2007 12:14 PMoff topic just for a sec.... I used to be a Tom Cruise fan until he began forcing his Scientology down every one's throats and began acting like a complete buffoon. For a while Tom also thought he was an MD.
Posted by: Heather4life at June 2, 2007 12:20 PMOh, I've always loathed Tom Cruise: I've never found him particularly appealing. Her politics don't have anything to do with my dislike of her, I just don't like her voice. What she stands for doesn't have anything to do with that.
Posted by: HumanAbstractLess -
On the Tom Cruise topic - I agree with you 100%. I never could figure out the deal with him?
Posted by: ValerieHeh, the only time I have ever really watch Idol was when Diana was on- she and I take from the same voice teacher, Bill Newberry.
Posted by: Erin at June 2, 2007 6:00 PMErin, sometime you'll have to record yourself singing and post it for us. I'd love to hear you. :)
Posted by: Bethany at June 2, 2007 6:06 PMCan you win American Idol if you don't put out?
Posted by: Cameron at June 2, 2007 6:08 PMBethany- I'm actually working on a few private music projects with my friend Chris right now, if we post them, I'll be happy to share the link with you.
Posted by: Erin at June 2, 2007 6:12 PMThanks, Erin! :)
Posted by: Bethany at June 2, 2007 6:19 PMI never watch American Idol, I've come to loathe reality tv because it takes away from more deserving dramas and comedies with real actors and actual storylines.
Good for Jordin Sparks that she won but it honestly doesn't matter anymore whether you win, as long as you stick around long enough to get the exposure. Heck, I bet Sanjaya is getting a record deal, just like William Hung.
Posted by: JK at June 2, 2007 7:04 PMEwww...Sanjaya. Blech.
Well good for Jordin. I don't really watch American Idol, though I did hear her sing and she is quite talented. Personally, I could care less if she was pro-choice or pro-life so this is pretty much irrelevant to me.
Hmmmm...maybe someday I'll try out for American Idol singing the Dresden Doll's "Mandy Goes to Med School." :-p
Posted by: Rae at June 2, 2007 8:26 PMyou go Jordin! Nice to see young people promoting abstinence! Even just by wearing a purity ring.
Erin -
You do know that if you post some songs you have to share with the whole class right?
;-)
Posted by: ValerieI never figured the whole Tom Cruise thing out either, to be honest. I've always had a thing for the tall, dark, and handsome guys: Oded Fehr of "The Mummy" comes to mind. I also prefer British actors to American actors, as they seem less boorish, even if it's just the accent that makes them seem so.
Posted by: HumanAbstractRae, if you made it onto American Idol I would vote for you :-)
Oded Fehr was on Charmed for a season. His voice fit so well with the nature of his character.
Posted by: JK at June 3, 2007 8:44 AMNow I have to take a cold shower....
Oded Fehr -- I'm drooling.
Posted by: ValerieLess, I agree with you about Tom Cruise. What's with Katie Holmes? I've never even heard the woman utter 1 word. She acts like she's afraid of him. Another one I don't care for is Brad Pitt. Maybe I'm the only one, but I change the channel every time I see him. He acts like a flake in his interviews. Rae, I was never a 'Friends' fan either. Comedian Kathy Griffith joked " All those people [the friends crew] ever did was whine." I watched it one day, and I realized she was right!! All they ever did was complain.
Posted by: Heather4life at June 3, 2007 9:50 AM@Heather4life: Yeah, not a fan of "Friends", I always thought it was stupid and never found it particularly funny. Tom Cruise and Brad Pitt are icky. I like my actors to be eloquent and smart as well as talented...which is why I absolute adore Alexander Siddig, Edward Norton, Ewan McGregor and George Clooney. I also enjoy Patrick Stewart and Morgan Freeman. :)
Posted by: Rae at June 3, 2007 1:36 PMMorgan Freeman is an excellent actor!
Posted by: Heather4life at June 3, 2007 2:02 PMI'm a big fan of Morgan Freeman as well, I also like Denzel Washington. Edward Norton is cool too.. George Clooney.. not a big fan...
I think it was Rae that said "Personally, I could care less if she was pro-choice or pro-life so this is pretty much irrelevant to me."
I couldn't agree with her more. I did watch Idol, for pretty much the whole season. Jordin was my favorite from day one. I'm not going to dislike her music or her because her views are different from my own. In fact I applaud her for being passionate about something. Most 17 year-olds, I realize this is not ALL, don't really care about anything. I currently work at a high school, and lets just say... words can not describe it...
Posted by: JM at June 3, 2007 2:19 PM@JM: When I was in high school, people thought *I* was weird because I actually cared about politics and would talk about it all the time when they were only concerned about, "OH EM GEE...So-and-so from the football team asked me to PROM! Tee-hee!" Sadly, so far, college is *not* much different.
How can you *not* like George Clooney!? :-p He was so gorgeous on "ER"...
Posted by: Rae at June 3, 2007 2:25 PMBack to Tom Cruise for a sec. You know, the whole Scientology thing just made him weird, but it isn't a reason to dislike him as an actor.
You know what a good reason to dislike him as an actor is?
Top Gun.
Worst. Movie. Ever. (except maybe Blair Witch Project)
I think political standpoints is a stupid way to judge an actor or any kind of performer. Who cares if this girl is pro-life or pro-choice or a vigin or not when it comes to her singing? Whatever. Her standpoints and her sexuality do not make her any worse or better of a singer.
In France, we don't have Idol--we have Star Academy. Yes, it's called the same in French: just English words said with a French accent. There are a lot of weird things like that because the Anglo-Saxon culture is huge here.
You know what we *do* have in France?
... Johnny Depp
Mmm ......
Posted by: Leah at June 3, 2007 6:45 PMGeorge Clooney?
he's a ..........
no, I better not.
Posted by: jasper at June 3, 2007 6:46 PM"You know what we *do* have in France?
... Johnny Depp"
Leah, good, please keep him...
I'm going to Italy later this month, I might swing by to George Clooney's house to say hello......lol
Oh and kudos to me for being from the same state where both George Clooney and Johnny Depp are from :-)
Posted by: JK at June 3, 2007 7:29 PMRae- I was able to find a good friend in college who was very passionate about a lot of things. We'd spend hours in discussion. Two years later we met another individual that like to have great discussions. The best part was she had different views that we did. This time we would spend hours in debate. All three of us learned so much from each other. And even when the debate got very heated we were still able to laugh and joke around with each other. It never effect our friendship.
Mmm Johnny Depp! Very nice!
Posted by: JM at June 3, 2007 8:04 PMWow theres a lot of errors in there.. opps sorry everyone! :)
Posted by: JM at June 3, 2007 8:06 PMBlah. Im behind again.
About Tom Cruise: didnt you guys think he was hot in the early days, back in Days of Thunder and Top Gun? I laugh every time I watch Nicole screaming, "Let me outta the cah, Cole! Let me outta the cah!" But that whole scientology thing...yikes. I heard that scientologists eat placenta, and I have no idea whether or not its true, but I was still turned off.
George Clooney is ah. Mazing. Ever since his cameo on Golden Girls as that detective when the people who move in next door are thieves. Sorry, Jasper, you lose that one.
Posted by: SamanthaT at June 3, 2007 8:29 PMGeorge Clooney was speaking at a National Board of Review event and thought he'd amuse his liberal friends, and said:
"Charlton Heston announced again today that he is suffering from Alzheimer's."
Charlton Heston has Alzheimers. Plus Charlton Heston has alot more class than the wimpy George Clooney, and is a much better actor.
Posted by: jasper at June 3, 2007 8:47 PMJasper, if Charlton Heston didnt have Alzheimers....the joke wouldnt make any sense. If you dislike him because he made a joke, the context of which I doubt you were present for, that happened to be aimed at your conservative idol, then you really need to get out more. There are much more pressing problems in the world than the state of relations between George Clooney and Charlton Heston. But in case you missed the body hugging leather he wore as Batman, there is not a wimpy spot on the man. And you take that how you want. It seems to me that you are not so much a free thinker but more a conservative commie robot who wants to take out anything that threatens Dr. Frankenstein.
Posted by: SamanthaT at June 3, 2007 9:06 PMI utterly loathe Heston: he's probably my least favorite actor on the planet. This likely has something to do with repeated forced viewings of both the Ten Commandments and Ben Hur (worst movie in existence, even worse than Top Gun) during my childhood.
I heart Cloony, myself. He was on Friends, and that is the absolute only episode I will watch. I've watched every single one of the new Star Wars movies enough to memorize the lines...all because of Ewan McGreggor. Lucky me, my fiance looks like a Japanese McGreggor, so I am constantly happy.
I agree on the high school topic; I was weird because I liked politics. I went on to a liberal arts school, however, which means that, while everyone is interested in politics, everyone is mostly in agreement.
Posted by: HumanAbstract@Less: I is jealous of you, having a Japanese McGregor. Not fair at all. :-p But yeah, Ewan definitely saved those movies from being completely horrible. :) I love politics, but I go to a university which is very science oriented, and not really into politics, so I rarely have anybody to debate with.
@JK: I is jealous of you. All that came out of Minnesota is Garrison Keillor, Terry Gilliam (Monty Python...which I guess is pretty much awesome), Josh Hartnett (EW!), Wynona Ryder, and Sean William Scott. I am ashamed...of all of them but Terry Gilliam because Monty Python is made of awesome.
And George Clooney is awesome, and especially so because Jasper hates him.
Posted by: Rae at June 3, 2007 9:28 PMRae, Less,
I have a present for you. Now you'll like him even more:
Ewan McGreggor was one of the celebs supporting Planned Parenthood's "The March for Women's Lives Celebrity Coalition" back in 04'
Posted by: jasper at June 3, 2007 10:11 PM@Jasper: Eh, I like him about the same. I really couldn't care less if he was pro-life or pro-choice.
But just so you know, one of my absolutely favorite actors EVER is Alexander Siddig...also known as Siddig El-Fadil from "Star Trek: Deep Space Nine", he played Dr. Bashir on there. Yup...he's half Sudanese and half British. And he's Muslim. And he's Malcolm McDowell's nephew. Last I checked though, he's not a terrorist who hates America considering he used to be married to Nana Visitor...who is American.
Posted by: Rae at June 3, 2007 10:15 PMYes Rae, he played in "Syriana" with George Clown and Matt Damon. I think was on the show "24" and played a terrorist, and the Americans ended up killing him.
Posted by: jasper at June 3, 2007 10:27 PM@Jasper: Yup, he played an EX-terrorist who was out trying to change his ways and the ways of others. I was so sad that he died on "24"...I felt the show went downhill after that happened.
Oh Syriana...I liked him in that one too, I also just plain liked the movie, it was well-made, a little paranoid and a bit too heavy on the conspiracy but interesting nonetheless. One of my favorite storylines in the movie was the stuff about the two boys who were fired and ended up getting radicalized at a Radical-Islam school. It just goes to show how a li'l manipulation can turn good, normal kids into those who blow themselves up. It's tragic really.
Posted by: Rae at June 3, 2007 10:34 PMI heart my Japanese McGreggor. He doesn't have the delicious accent, though, but he is a bit too naive for his own good, sometimes, and that's always fun! I agree that McGreggor (the real one) saved those movies: the only other reason I watch them is for drinking games or to mock Hayden Christenson, and occasionally both!
I don't care about Mr. McGreggor's politics. He makes my eyes happy and that's all I need. Alexander Siddig I'd not heard of, so I IMDB'd him. He's adorable; he looks like a baby lion or something. I've never seen 24 or Syriana: mayhaps I should.
Posted by: HumanAbstractRae, don't forget about Al Franken. He's from Minnesota and he's pretty freakin' awesome :-)
