When shoddy abortion mills are exposed, proponent say they are anomalies.
An August 19 article in PressofAtlanticCity.com analyzed state inspection histories of all six NJ mills. To clarify, the following two mills are not the two closed earlier this year, which were Metropolitan and Alternatives:

Inspections are sporadic at best and, when they do occur, discovering serious violations is common.Inspections remain overdue for the three other abortion centers - by as much as seven years in the case of the Planned Parenthood clinic in Shrewsbury.... The last inspection reports for all six clinics recorded violations....
The violations outlined in the six most recent abortion clinic reports are equally extensive.
Although Pilgrim Medical Center in Montclair was the only abortion clinic whose routine inspections were up to date, several state violations were found in 2005. These included providing unspecified medical services without a license and lacking an oxygen supply to patients in one operating room.Patients' dried blood and blood residue were common discoveries in some of the state's licensed abortion clinics, including the Montclair clinic, where investigators revealed that the base of the clinic's operating tables were "soiled and caked with dried blood" and the floors below the tables were "soiled and stained with blood residue."...
Pilgrim Medical Center remained open....
The clinic that went the longest without state inspection was Planned Parenthood... in Shrewsbury, whose most recent inspection was conducted Jan. 4, 2000. According to the report, the clinic's license had expired five days prior to the inspection....
In its defense, the NJ Health Dept. stated NJ had undergone an almost 100% increase in ambulatory health centers in the last seven years, but the Press investigation found:
Before the state's 2000 visit, officials hadn't been to the Shrewsbury clinic since 1996....
At any rate, NJHD spokesman Tom Slater appeared to assert state inspections don't matter...
"These facilities are staffed by licensed professionals and part of their licensure requirements is that they uphold the highest of standards," he said. "We have confidence that they will continue to do that and notify us if there is a problem."
... leading me to ask why then do state inspections of anything matter? Why bother with restaurant inspections or car inspections? Doesn't the state trust us to notify it if there is a problem?
Is what's really going on here pro-abortion bias?
"I think it's been a long-standing position of the state that abortion is the great untouchable of law and politics," said Marie Tasy... of... NJ Right to Life.Republican Reps. Chris Smith and Scott Garrett reiterated Tasy's comments in their letter to Health Commissioner Jacobs shortly after Metropolitan... was shut down.
"It is our greatest concern that in the state's haste to appear supportive of abortion rights, it is failing to safeguard the health and safety of the vulnerable young women who seek abortions in New Jersey," the letter reads.
Comments:
Hi everyone! I start college today and it's basically amazing. I missed the city SO MUCH. Hopefully I'll be getting my computer at home fixed soon, but for now, I'm just using the WiFi at college. Have I missed much?
Posted by: Erin at August 20, 2007 10:46 AMJill, excellent article today...as usual. :)
Jill,
It's New Jersey - so this isn't surprising. County and city governments are corrupt (for the most part), Newark is corrupt, and well, this all just ties in to the clinic problems....
While there are good people in NJ, remember the majority of voters have the "anybody but a conservative" attitute, and as long that trend doesn't go away, NJ isn't going to change much.
(Granted, a *few* conservatives do get elected...)
But the people of NJ reap what they sow, and maybe one day they'll be open minded enough to drop the "anybody but a conservative" attitude. Then you'll start seeing some of these problems clear up - unless the conservatives also fall victim to the dark side of Jersey politics...
In NJ, abortion is a sacrament to the corrupt politicians and governement representatives.

Oh my God, please tell me that was taken out of context...He couldn't possibly have graduated from fifth grade and said something like that!
Do you think the "professionals" that are sucking the babies out of women's wombs are a smarter group than Mr. Slater? Let's hope so, cuz otherwise it sounds like a bunch of fools are running these clinics...oh wait, we're talking about abortion clinics...They ARE a bunch of fools running these clinics. Never mind.

Posted by: Heather at August 20, 2007 1:40 PMHey Erin, toward the tail end of last week there seemed to be a news surge, at least of stuff that interested me. Read back through the posts.
Erin and PIP, study hard but don't leave us!
Bethany, thanks.
Ruben, I think NJ is not alone. I think public officials in my states avert their eyes to the abortion industry. When they pay attention, they pay, like Phill Kline did.

That may be true, but the problems aren't just with abortion...
Quite often, people end up just sneering at the mention of Jersey, and it's not due to snobbery. If I had to guess, NJ is probably within the bottom 5 states in terms of overall corruption.
Unfortunately, there are many good citizens of NJ which suffer due to the state of affairs there...

I just pulled this from the PP website.
They claim the following.
We care
We listen
We explain
We educate
We speak out
We're private
We're sensitive
We're affordable
We're convenient
We're confidential
We're professional
We're experts in reproductive health care
***********************************8
Just so they can claim truth in advertising, let's break this down.
"We care"
About making money
"We listen"
To your concerns about considering abortion and then explain that it really is your only option.
"We explain"
That the abortion procedure is quick and painless. It will solve all of your problems. We also will explain that if you call with PAS symptoms, we tell you to just chalk it up to your sad pathetic life prior to your abortion. We are not responsible. Sorry!
"We educate"
We educate women on the use of birth control, knowing that they will use it inconsistently and will return to us for a follow-up abortion at some point.
"We speak out"
Except in the cases where women have died after an abortion procedure from one of our clinics.
"We're private"
We promise when we call 911 for an emergent situation, we will ask them not to turn the lights and sirens on for the sake of your privacy.
"We're sensitive"
We turn up the suction machine really loud so you don't have to worry about hearing yourself cry during the procedure.
"We're affordable"
Cuz we hoodwinked the government into subsidizing and/or paying for your abortion.
"We're convenient"
We have conveniently placed our clinics in strategic locations to prey on the weak and poor.
"We're confidential"
We promise we won't tell anyone about the sexual abuse or statutory rape you endured. We will just help you get rid of your problem.
"We're professional"
Well, except for the caked blood under the dirty procedure tables, rusty unsterile surgical tools, and the umpteen health code violations received through limited state inspections.
Sandy, LMAO!!!!!!!!
Posted by: Heather at August 20, 2007 3:17 PMSandy,
That was brilliant!!!! Applause!!!!
Posted by: mk at August 20, 2007 3:21 PMSandy, you forgot the last one. So, if I may. We're experts in reproductive health care........Yes, they are experts in killing your offspring, and we're experts in giving you pi$$ poor contraception to ensure that you will probably be back to kill another baby.
Posted by: Heather at August 20, 2007 3:22 PMBTW, which brings us back to "We care"
Posted by: Heather at August 20, 2007 3:26 PMThank you...Thank you...I will be here all week.
*Takes a bow*
Thanks Heather for catching the last one. It's funny how they call it reproductive healthcare when abortion isn't really reproductive.
Posted by: Sandy at August 20, 2007 3:41 PMSandy, this is why I call them Planned Barren hood. I'm SO GLAD you will be here all week!
Posted by: Heather at August 20, 2007 3:45 PMWell actually Heather and Sandy,
If you break the word down it works.
Re-productive. The first time you buy into their lies, it is productive for them.
If they can get you to re-invest in their lies and connivances, then it will be re-productive for them.
Voila! RE-productive health care!
(Doug-Now that's semantics!)
Posted by: mk at August 20, 2007 6:48 PMRemember New Jersey is the state that allowed Steve Brigham to keep his license and continue his quackery, as long as he stopped advertising his abortions as "safe" and "painless."
Actually performing the painful and unsafe abortions? That the judge didn't have a problem with.
Posted by: Christina at August 21, 2007 5:22 AMYou lose all credibility by using the term 'abortion mills'

Abortion isnt murder. And trying to pretend that a licensed doctor providing desperately needed health care for women is somehow a 'fool' is again an example of the frothing hysterical idiocy of so many antichoice arguments.
Just so they can claim truth in advertising, let's break this down.

The TRUTH is thats only YOUR opinion and youre obviously biased. I, for one, am not all that impressed.

*******
They also give prescriptions for birth control pills, etc. Trying to pretend that PP DELIBERATELY hands out faulty condoms and HOPES women will get pregnant JUST SO they can perform an abortion is idiotic. According to the last stats I read, abortion makes up less than 6% of the service offered by PP. PP is 'the largest abortion provider' in the US because its the only health care organization that has clinics in virtually every state. I live in a major metropolitan area. There are PP clinics all over the place but only one of the clinics performs abortions and they dont perform them every day.
Per TR:
"The TRUTH is thats only YOUR opinion and youre obviously biased. I, for one, am not all that impressed."
TR,
Actually most if not all of the truths like the ones stated above have come from reading that I have done on the abortion industry which mainly includes statements and experiences directly from abortion providers themselves. Would you call them biased?? They work or have worked in the business.
Do you ever do any reading on the abortion industry?? There are some insightful books out there like Blood Money and Lime Five which will confirm this is a dirty bloody murdering business that is all about the money.
Read these books and then get back to me on how biased I am.
Posted by: Sandy at August 21, 2007 5:04 PMTexas Read, I said the last one. Try reading before spouting off.
Posted by: Heather at August 21, 2007 8:16 PMTR:
Idiotic??
This testimony came from former abortion clinic worker Joan Appleton.
I was issuing birth control pills after an abortion, and this is where I learned the real business and the real work of the abortion industry.
I would be able to counsel a woman and say, "Alright, we don't want you to have to go through this procedure again. We want to get you started on birth control pills. We'll give you your first packet free." We could do this because the pharmaceutical companies gave it to us free. It's good marketing. So we could distribute one pack free and write a prescription for five months worth. Everybody makes out.
If the birth control pill doesn't work for you this time, it may be that it's a little too strong. But don't worry, come on back because there's one that's a little lower dose.
Now the pharmaceutical companies and Planned Parenthood and the abortion industry were not stupid. They knew that the less dose of estrogen in those pills, the more likely it was they were going to fail. But you don't have to worry. We can bring you right back here for another abortion.
They even used percentages, by the way. Thirty percent failure rate, because were going to use the real low estrogen pill. So that means thirty percent will come back. And if we forget to tell you, by the way, that if you get the flu and have to be put on antibiotics, the chemical reaction between the birth control pill and the antibiotic renders the birth control pill worthless, and totally ineffective, so we have another twenty percent. Thank you, come back around.
