Aurora Beacon: "Former official knew Planned Parenthood was coming to city"

weisner.jpgWhat I get from this story is that Aurora Mayor Tom Weisner had something to be nervous about, which may be why he at first to appoint an independent investigator into Gemini/Planned Parenthood fraud who was a "friendly."

That aside, this story further corroborates PP's deceptiveness. PP called a city official to express "interest[] in relocating their offices from Naperville to Aurora" - when PP already owned the office building in question, and it was near completion? If the story as outlined by the Beacon is true, this only strengthens Aurora's case that PP/Gemini practiced deception against it.

In the Aurora Beacon, today....

Planned Parenthood's new facility on East New York Street was approved by the city of Aurora under the name Gemini Office Development. Gemini is the name on all the permit applications, and the name given by representatives at city meetings.

But city staffers now say that a Planned Parenthood representative did contact the city earlier this year, using the company's more familiar name, and spoke with then-Community Development Director Bill Wiet.

Wiet, who was named chief of staff to Mayor Tom Weisner [photo right] in June, called all of the city aldermen last week to tell them his story. He has also shared it with attorney Phillip Luetkehans, the man conducting an independent investigation of Planned Parenthood's approval process.

The new facility was approved in November of 2006, though its true occupant was not revealed until July of this year. Some have charged that the company was deceptive, and Weisner ordered the investigation under pressure from anti-abortion activists, upset over plans to perform abortions at the clinic.

Wiet said Monday that he received a call in late February from "someone at Planned Parenthood," interested in relocating their offices from Naperville to Aurora. He said the representative asked to set up a meeting with the mayor, so Wiet referred the matter to Weisner's office.

Planned Parenthood officials could not be reached Monday for confirmation or comment.

At the time, Gemini Office Development's building on New York Street was under construction, and Wiet said he quickly drew a connection, although he didn't know then that Gemini is a subsidiary of Planned Parenthood.

"I surmised that the site they were talking about might be the one on New York Street," Wiet said. "I knew that there was a medical office building under construction, and I thought that might be where they were looking to go."

City spokesman Carie Anne Ergo confirmed that the mayor's office received Wiet's referral, and said that several attempts were made over the next 10 weeks to contact Planned Parenthood for a meeting. The calls were not returned, she said, and the matter was filed away with no further contact.

Ergo said that no one else in the mayor's office, save for administrative staff, was aware that the meeting request had been made.

Wiet emphasized that he has never met anyone from Planned Parenthood, and the meetings were never scheduled. As community development director, he said, he received such calls "all the time," and said he followed the proper procedures for setting up a meeting.

Still, he said he felt it best to provide the information to the independent investigator, and also to the aldermen.

"This was all after the zoning, the permits, and after construction commenced," he said. "But turning the clock back, if we had met (in February), we might have known (about Planned Parenthood) earlier in the process."

Comments:

Guess who's not getting re-elected next term...

Can anyone say Mayor Tom Weisner. Let's just hope that Mr. Weisner drops the "e" and "n" in his name and calls himself Wiser from now on...

Have we learned anything from this Mayor?

Question:

Can I vote in this week's poll if I'm not a republican?

Fred Thompson for "Voice of God."

I've heard good things about Ron Paul. No war and no taxes, if I were republican I would like him.

JK - Ron Paul has been in an extreme minority for a long time, as one of a handful of people who really are for good governmental fiscal management.

A pity, I say, that there haven't been more like him as far as the money issues.... (Now, it's too, too late..)

I *thought* I smelled smoke in Aurora's city hall.

If Wiet's story is true, then why is he only now telling the aldermen and the independent investigator this? Why didn't he bring this up back in late July>

The source of the smoke seems to be coming from the mayor's office.
