How well do you understand the implications of the U.S. Supreme Court's 1973 Roe v. Wade decision? Take a little quiz and find out. Then share your score and what you got wrong, if anything.

I scored 100%, although it was a bit of a surprise because I guessed on a couple.
Posted by: Jill Stanek at December 7, 2007 8:33 AMI got 2 wrong...which was a bit of a surprise cuz I guessed on a lot of them. It was tricky because they combined Roe and Doe...
Posted by: mk at December 7, 2007 8:49 AMwell I got 48% but I'm Canadian and we have NO restrictions on abortions here and NO saving the baby laws either if he/she happens to survive the abortion.
Posted by: Patricia at December 7, 2007 9:25 AMExactly the same answer as mk!
Posted by: Pat at December 7, 2007 10:14 AMI got 9 out of 12 correct
Posted by: rosie at December 7, 2007 10:27 AMIt's weird, because I got 8 but said I got 6 .... not too bad, eh?
Posted by: John McDonell at December 7, 2007 10:37 AMI got 10/12
I didn't know any of the answers, but I just thought like a pro-life person and got most them.
The only ones I missed were the Supreme Court Justice one (I guessed one of the women), and the number of abortions total (I guessed the largest amount).
Posted by: Stephanie at December 7, 2007 12:26 PM100%
Of course the quiz has nothing to do with how well anyone understands what Roe actually says, just what it doesn't say. Including whether or not I have taught Sunday School.
Whoo! I only missed one! Though a good bit of that was luck, I guessed a bunch too.
Posted by: Erin at December 7, 2007 12:37 PMhahahaha, I ROCK!
I got 11/12 or a 91.66%.
I missed the one that asked which Judge said ....
Posted by: Anonymous at December 7, 2007 1:02 PMGot 9 of 12 correct.
Jill, I have just recently discovered your blog. Thanks for doing such a great job!

And I thought I knew it all...
Posted by: carder at December 7, 2007 2:00 PMthat was a great quiz! I only missed two . . . the quote from the Supreme Ct judge, and the question about the # of abortions - I thought the number was just around 50+million but they're putting it at 40-49 million.
I think many of those questions would be very eye-opening for middle-of-the-road "I don't have an opinion" kind of Americans ... particularly the q's showing the lack of restrictions from Roe. I believe most people would be shocked to know that Roe makes abortion legal for ALL 9 months for ANY reason at all, with NO degree of consent required for children seeking abortions, with NO specifics regulating who can even perform an abortion, etc, etc, etc. The average American has no clue that Roe basically allows an abortion free-for-all ... unpresidented even when compared to the most liberal european nations ... and that only some states have instituted certain restrictions.
Posted by: Kristi at December 7, 2007 2:25 PMPresident Hillary Clinton will sign FOCA into law, and then Roe/Wade won't matter any more.

Kristi, Roe leaves the regulation of abortion up to the states. The little quiz seems to point out how little many PL know or understand about abortion law. Viability is the standard cut off for requested abortion. That many states have not found the necessity of legally mandating this cut off, doesn't mean that requested abortions past viability are available. Since 88% of abortions are performed before 12 weeks, insinuating that lack of legislation has caused some kind of 'free for all' is obviously false.
The PL have no business pushing legislation in communities they do not live in. It is up to each state to decide which laws are necessary and which are not.
Viability isn't really a cutoff. If a woman says she feels mental stress then it is a health reason.
If the abortion at 25 weeks or later isn't available locally, it is still available.
Abortion advocates have no business pushing abortion in communities they do not live in.
NOW and NARAL support legislation for free access to abortion all over the nation even in communities that don't want it. Why would states pass bans if they really wanted free access?
"The PL have no business pushing legislation in communities they do not live in. It is up to each state to decide which laws are necessary and which are not."
ding ding ding ding ding.... that's why Roe is so wrong - the Court has no business inventing a "right" and then telling the states that laws outlawing abortion are NOT necessary. Oh, that and the fact that it enshrines as constitutional right the intentional and pre-meditated killing of our most vulnerable humans.

Twist twist twist. No organization has the power to force anyone to abort. To insinuate such is just silly. No organization can force a community to pass laws they don't wish to enact. Including the various PL organizations that would wish to do just that.
Abortion upon request for any reason is not simply up to the woman. Your dehumanization of the experience of mental illness by calling it simply 'stress' is beneath you hippie.
Now I have some shopping to do.
NOW and NARAL support legislation for free access to abortion all over the nation even in communities that don't want it.

Uh, free market enterprise. The law of supply and demand.
If an abortion clinic opens where nobody wants an abortion, it will fail pretty quickly.
Abortion advocates have no business pushing abortion in communities they do not live in.

I feel the same way about those damn abolitionists.
I want a slave, everone in my community wants a slave, and those damn abolitionists insisted on inflicting their values on us. Some sort of freaky "bodily autonomy" thing.

I say that we nullify all Constitutional Amendments. Get rid of the Supreme Court as well. Each state can do as it pleases with impunity.
Posted by: Sally at December 7, 2007 5:26 PMEven this thread shows a lack of knowledge about Roe v. Wade.
I got 10/12 (missed the one about the country and the Supreme Court judge).
Roe v. Wade is not about the "right to abortion." It's about the "right to privacy" which is a Constitutional right. Abortion falls under the privacy clause and is therefore legal. All medical procedures are regulated by the state, which is why states have separate laws regarding when abortion is or is not legal. But the Constitution does not define medical law. It defines rights.
Hooray for education.

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. -- An eyewitness tells fire authorities about two hooded persons who broke a window and threw a gas can into an abortion clicnic that caught fire Thursday night.
Local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies are investigating a fire at the office of Curtis Boyd, M.D., an abortion provider in Albuquerque.
The fire occurred at Dr. Boyd's clinic at 801 Encino Place near the University of New Mexico hospital around 11:30 p.m. Thursday.
Albuquerque Fire Department said a witness saw two persons in hooded jackets break a window on the west side of the clinic. The witness called out to them. The two hooded persons then moved to another window on the building's south side and threw a gas can into the building and a small fire started at that point. The two persons drove away in a square black van.
After several hours of investigating, AFD confirmed that the witness saw an arson in progress. AFD is working closely with ATF and FBI on this case.
According to a statement from the National Abortion Federation, there have been seven murders, 17 attempted murders, 41 bombings, 100 butyric acid attacks, 656 anthrax threats, and 175 arsons against abortion providers since 1977, including Thursday's Albuquerque incident.
The clinic incurred severe fire damage to one room and smoke damage throughout, but crews say the building is not a total loss. No one was inside at the time. Staff at the clinic is still answering the phone and seeing patients at another undisclosed location.
Boyd has been practicing in the Southwest region for more than 22 years.
If you have any information on this case please call Crime Stoppers at 843-STOP, ATF at 346-6917 or the Arson Hotline at 872-1493.

Dr Boyd is a family practioner that performs abortions. His office is in the Encino Medical Arts Complex next door to a drug testing facility. Perhaps their drug tests came up dirty and they got high and torched the wrong office.
The only abortion protesters we get here are organized by a catholic priest. Catholic priests don't get much backing here with having had so many perverted ones dumped into the state.
But then, the violence of previous PLs may very well be idolized by some.
Sally,
Thank you for the benifit of the doubt. Reguardless of which building they were aiming for, the two who did this should be prosecuted. If they were after the abortion clinic, then they are definately NOT PRO-LIFE, they are criminals. But there are crazies on both sides. I hope they find them.

What mental illness? Abortion is not a treatment for mental illness. Doctors do not have to establish that a woman is suffering from mental illness to use mental health as a reason for late term abortion. There is no evidence that abortion has a positive impact on mental health. So even if she is mentally ill, the abortion will not help her mental condition.
I scored 10 out of 11. Most of the questions were pretty well known except for the trick question :)

Don't think that is true Tony.

Here you will find that while a narrow majority typically "supports" upholding Roe while 80% or more support at least some restriction on abortion. There is a significant overlap there. If the quiz Q&A's were as generally known as you think, the numbers would likely be congruous.
