I have watched the videos Mary Kay posted of John McCain's views of the sanctity of life in his own words, and they made my blood boil.
Then this morning Bobby Schindler emailed me an Esquire article from 2006, wherein he stated, on the isse of Bobby's sister Terri Schiavo:
I understand the frustrations a lot of Republicans feel. We're not representing their hopes and dreams and aspirations. We worry about Ms. Schiavo before we worry about balancing the budget. We're going to take up this Family Marriage Amendment again. Why?.... It's pointless...I urge my friends who complain about the influence of the religious Right, get out there and get busy. That's what they do! Now, if we believe in the Republican party of Abraham Lincoln and Theodore Roosevelt, the big-tent party, then we have to get out there and show that. The fact is, some of us have sat idly by while those very active people have basically set the agenda for our party....
As I recall, Abraham Lincoln did not subscribe to the big-tent on slavery, but that's an aside.
By his own words, from the videos Mary Kay posted:
John McCain is simply uncommitted to the sanctity of life. He considers pro-lifers aggravants in the Republican Party. He wants to work with the other side on this issue. Not only has he sponsored McCain-Feingold and McCain-Kennedy legislation, he clearly would sponsor McCain-Boxer and McCain-Obama abortion bills, if he could find a way.
I shudder to think what they would look like.
Comments:
All right sister, I let it slide the last time you credited Bethany with something I did, but I sense a pattern emerging here...
Posted by: mk at February 12, 2008 11:37 AMThis is exactly why Ann Coulter says she wants Hillary for president over McCain. Nothing would be different, other than Republicans would actually stand against her (they will not stand against McCain) and if McCain is elected everything will be blamed on the Republicans.
Posted by: Nathan Will Sheets at February 12, 2008 11:52 AMNathan,
Interesting point. It's not looking good for pro-lifers is it?
Posted by: Janet at February 12, 2008 12:22 PMLet's say McCain gets the nomination. Long shot, I"m sure.
You are not going to vote, right?

Bethany,
I was just teasing her. When I read what she posted I couldn't figure out what videos you had put up...thought I was losin' it.

Oh my gosh, that so reminds me of two sitcom episodes:
1. The "Friends" one where Monica accuses Rachel of stealing her thunder
and
2. The "Brady Bunch" one where Jan keeps saying, "It's always Marcia, Marcia, Marcia".
lol, mk!!!
Posted by: Anonymous at February 12, 2008 7:37 PMMcCain needs to take some "Theology of the Body" classes. This would be the first step to getting a true understanding of God's role for marriage and the life issues!

Posted by: prettyinpink at February 12, 2008 8:47 PMRock on, Barack, and I have always liked McCain. He's honest about what he thinks, even if he gets testy and comes off as abrasive at times.

Bethany is wonderful & so humble, too!
God bless both of you & Jasper & Val, too. You guys have all put up some great articles & I think you've all done a tremendous job of filling Jill's big Henry Hyde award-winning shoes. (not saying her feet are big, or anything - well, you know.)

Au contraire!
The Clinton years were a wonderful little chunk of American history - well, if you like peace and prosperity anyway.
I will go to my grave pondering what the last eight years would have been like with Al Gore as President.
One need only look to McCain's ties to George Soros ( founder
of Open Society/Project on Death In America,)
http://www.lifetree.org/resources/sorosrwjfnexus.pdf
to understand his hostile comments about Terri.
As World Net Daily explains:

I have said before that I like Ralph Nader. I credit him with saving millions of animals that Gore wanted to poison to retest chemicals. We tree huggers and animal lovers came out against him.
Posted by: hippie at February 13, 2008 1:18 AMAnon,
Stop it some more...Way too kind. I am counting the minutes till Jill gets home tho.
As to filling her shoes. On the DC trip one night we got to talking about feet. I wear a size 11. I would never divulge another woman's shoe size, but lets just say that even with my feet de Bozo, I still can't fill her shoes...Between us however, I think it's safe to say we could all sail to Europe in one of them!
By the way, you're like one of the family now...don't you think it's time you gave yourself a Christian name? lol

If McCain gets the nomination, I will most likely not be voting. That is true.
Bethany posted:

You & Dr. Dobson are in the same boat. Please forgive my bluntness, but that is a foolish position for a pro-lifer to take.
No, McCain is certainly not perfect. He's not my first choice for the Republican nominee, and he's clearly not your first choice either. But we don't get our first choices, because McCain will be the nominee. Huck can stay in the race for as long as he wants, but the math is not on his side. McCain is the pick. Deal with it.
(As an aside, it is now time for Huck to make a graceful exit. He can't win, and his presence is only continuing the split between conservative Christians and the GOP....)
McCain's not perfect, but he's actually pretty good. Take a look at the NRLC scorecards if you don't believe me:
http://www.capwiz.com/nrlc/home/
McCain is 66% pro-life so far this year, but he hasn't voted on a number of bills. He was 75% pro-life last year, and 81% pro-life the year before that. In comparison, both Obama and Clinton are 0% pro-life. Does that look good to you?
Politics is the art of the possible. Yes, I'd rather have a 100% pro-lifer in the White House ... but that's not possible in this election. Given the choice between a moderate pro-lifer and candidates who are fervently pro-death, I'll take the moderate pro-lifer and be grateful.
Posted by: Naaman at February 13, 2008 2:17 PMYou might be right, Naaman. *sigh*
ahh so you guys will vote for someone who's not prolife.
Posted by: prettyinpink at February 13, 2008 5:11 PMI can't even italicize on posts!
Anonymous, it's easy. All you do is put three characters in front of what you want italicized, and four after it.
Disregard all quotation marks here - only use what's within them.
""
So you've got the "less than" sign, then the lower case "i" then the "greater than" sign. That's HTML code for making what follows in italics. Then put the text you want.
After it, again put the ""
That's it. It'll end the italicized text there.
Doug
Posted by: Doug at February 13, 2008 6:42 PMOh good grief it won't even show the brackets...
Oh well, hope the example helps.
Posted by: Doug at February 13, 2008 6:45 PMGood visual example, Doug. I think that should be very helpful!
Posted by: Bethany at February 13, 2008 8:32 PMahh so you guys will vote for someone who's not prolife.
I don't want to, PiP. However, if Naaman is right and it really does come down to McCain and Obama, the lesser of two evils would most likely be McCain...and he might be right that I would be making a mistake (ensuring that Obama or Clinton become president), if I don't vote for McCain. I really don't want to vote for either of them. I'm really frustrated with the options. But I think I might have to vote for McCain if it does come down to it. :-( 81 percent pro-life is better than 0..he's right about that.
Posted by: Bethany at February 13, 2008 8:35 PMI'm trying it now, Doug. I hope & pray that I don't look like a fool who can't follow instructions!

Um, what? McCain is pro-life. He's not 100% pro-life, but he's still pro-life. That's not ideal, but I'll take what I can get.
Apparently, NARAL Pro-Choice America is already attacking McCain:
"John McCain has a 25-year record of voting against women's freedom and privacy, and he has even gone so far as to call for the overturn of Roe v. Wade," Keenan said.
http://www.lifenews.com/nat3708.html
You can always tell more about a man from his enemies than from his friends. If NARAL hates John McCain, then he's acceptable to me. :)
Posted by: Naaman at February 14, 2008 5:28 AMHere's a post on NARAL's Bush v. Choice blog that attacks McCain:
While many far-right radio personalities, like Rush Limbaugh, attack Sen. McCain as a “moderate maverick,” and it seems that pundits are repeating the talking points, NARAL Pro-Choice America has made it crystal clear that they will not let Sen. McCain benefit from the misperception that moderate means pro-choice.
When it comes to choice, Sen. McCain is neither a moderate, nor a maverick, he’s just plain wrong. As we move toward the general election, NARAL Pro-Choice America will make sure that voters, especially pro-choice Independent and Republican women, know the truth about Sen. McCain.
http://www.bushvchoice.com/archives/2008/02/the_myth_of_the_1.html
Whoops. That second paragraph should also be in italics, because it's part of the same quote. Sorry about that. :(
Obviously, if NARAL hates McCain, then I think he's right about abortion. :)
Posted by: Naaman at February 14, 2008 5:37 AMNaaman, the stuff discussed on this blog has led me to believe that he is not pro-life. Republicans for Choice endorses him.

You're most welcome, Anonymous. Gotta love this modern technology.
My mom told me for years to get a computer, that I'd love it, etc. This went on for years and in 1996 finally did so.
Dang - how did I ever live without one? ; )
Posted by: Doug at February 14, 2008 5:44 PMQUESTION FOR NAAMAN
I recently stumbled across your converstion story on Jill Stanek's website. The one where you said that you used to be a NOW escort at the Commonwealth Clinic in Falls Church, VA. I was wondering why you made up a story that others could disprove? I was an escort at that clinic when you say that you were and there were enough errors that I could tell that it was a piece of fiction.
Posted by: jaybones at February 17, 2008 6:23 PMNAAMAN,
What's the matter? Don't you want to respond to someone who calls you a liar and can prove it?
