Notre Dame to honor pro-life actor Martin Sheen

From the Associated Press, March 2:

Activist-actor Martin Sheen will be honored by the University of Notre Dame with its Laetare Medal for his humanitarian work, the school announced Sunday.

Sheen, who played a U.S. president who was a Notre Dame graduate in the TV series "West Wing," is to receive the medal at the school's May 18 commencement.

Since 1883, the Laetare Medal has been awarded annually to a Catholic "whose genius has ennobled the arts and sciences, illustrated the ideals of the church and enriched the heritage of humanity."...

"He has used that celebrity to draw the attention of his fellow citizens to issues that cry out for redress, such as the plight of immigrant workers and homeless people, the waging of unjust war, the killing of the unborn and capital punishment," [university president Rev. John] Jenkins said....

Sheen, 67, describes himself as a Catholic peace activist. He has been arrested for taking part in nonviolent demonstrations against various U.S. military policies, and has donated money and time to such causes as the alleviation of poverty and homelessness, human rights for migrant workers and environmental protection.

In 2001, Feminists for Life named Sheen as 1 of its Remarkable Pro-Life Men that year.

LifeNews.com previously reported Sheen is a "longtime supporter of the Seamless Garment Network, a pro-life group that also opposes war, poverty, abortion, racism, and capital punishment."

Sheen filed a brief supporting Joe Scheidler's right to free speech in the infamous Now vs. Scheidler case, heard before the U.S. Supreme Court twice.

I didn't know this about him. I had read that Charlie Sheen wanted his ex wife Denise Richards to have an abortion. She refused. I never thought that any member of the Sheen family was PL. That's awesome!

+ he's good looking!

a "pro-life" man who will no doubt vote pro-death.

jasper, do you think?

Posted by: heather at March 3, 2008 2:34 PM

yes, martin sheen is a big left-winger (aside from his supposed pro-life stance)

Posted by: jasper at March 3, 2008 2:48 PM

jasper, that's disappointing.

Martin Sheen changed his name to Sheen (from Estevez)in honor of Fulton Sheen. (Did you know that Bobbie?)

I knew he was pro-life but he's so outspoken for pro-abortion candidates I just can't understand...

Can't say I am too thrilled as a Catholic.

His pro-life conviction amounts to nothing. Have you heard him speak against abortion, ESCR, euthanasia? Neither have I. While he is part of Democrats for Life he has never participated in the March for Life and is conspicuously absent on this issue. It would be great to have someone prominent in Hollywood promote the cause, but unlike Patricia Heaton he doesn't make it public.

In fact his pro-life view is very similar to most Catholic politicians with the "Personally opposed, but.." excuse.

"Q: What are your views on abortion?

Sheen: I cannot make a choice for a women, particularly a black or brown or poor pregnant woman. I would not make a judgment in the case. As a father and a grandfather, I have had experience with children who don't always come when they are planned, and I have experienced the great joy of God's presence in my children, so I'm inclined to be against abortion of any life. But I am equally against the death penalty or war-- anywhere people are sacrificed for some end justifying a means. I don't think abortion is a good idea. I personally am opposed to abortion, but I will not judge anybody else's right in that regard because I am not a woman and I could never face the actual reality of it."

He has supported candidate runs for Dean, Kerry, and Richardson - all pro-aborts. His pro-life conviction seems to take the backseat to pretty much anything.

last year he called conservatives "bastards" and a "dangerous bunch of fascists" and spoke at a LGBT fundraiser and is supporter of "gay rights" and is being honored by a Catholic institution despite his Cafeteria Catholicm. He is also has his doubts about 9/11 "chief among them is Building 7 - how did they rig that building so that it came down on the evening of the day?"

Jeff, thanks for the 411 on that. Sounds like he straddles the fence.

I did read that he dropped out of the "March For Women's Lives." No reason given.

Steve, thanks. I'm glad Denise refused to abort.

He may not publically speak out against abortion, but at least he allows that information in his interviews and articles. It does speak volumes when a life long democrat speaks out against this - even if it is wishy washy.

I have a feeling that there are many other hollyweirdo's that are against abortion as birth control but are too afraid to make that public. Having someone like Sheen allow this information out could possibly give someone else the courage to stand up for their beliefs.

He may be wishy wahsy on answering the question - I absolutely hate the 'I wouldn't do it but I think it is wrong BS - But I'm still happy that this information is "out there".

Maybe Martin Sheen needs to spend a little more time counseling his whacko son Charlie before he accepts any awards or is honored for his supposed pro-life views.

Sheen is a dangerous man - I know - I am a human rights activist and my parents are Cuban exiles so I know who is involved in the good and the bad. Sheen's name is always (and I mean always!) on annocements that are put out by communist groups like International Action Center that feature programs, causes, or demonstrations that help and support the Castro brother's Cuban dictatorship. His name is one of the first. Cuba - communist Cuba if you don't recall has one of the highest abort rates in the world - some say the highest because abortion in Cuba is used as birth control and Cuban doctors fool the world by saying that cuba has one of the lowest infant mortality rates in the world by aborting problem pregnancies.

The thing about Cuba is true - just google "rivanol+cuba"

...................................

So it would be preferable to you for Cuba to have a higher infant mortality rate? It is somehow better for women to suffer the loss of an infant? To risk their reproductive health to give birth to infants having no chance of living?

Martin Sheen in 'Apocalypse Now'

Posted by: Doug at March 5, 2008 8:44 AM

Martin Sheen is pro-choice. He is personally opposed to abortion but he has done nothing to help restrict or make abortion illegal. Martin sheen is an outspoken activist on a lot of issues but abortion is not one of them.

He is well known for his civil disobedience, protests letter writing etc. He wrote to the Sec. of the Interior Gail Norton asking for an immediate ban on the use of snares and steel jaw traps in National forests. He marches with pro aborts like Ms. Huerta in anti war rallies, he will get arrested at Fort Benning protesting the school of Americas, he demands for an immediate end to liquified natural gas terminals off the coast of California, public protests against capital punishment etc. etc. etc. Pictures, videos, letters, all kinds of evidence of sheen standing up and fighting for the causes he believes in are easily found all over the internet from big city national newspapers to small college campus publications and tiny news letters of these organizations. BUT NOT A SINGLE BIT OF EVIDENCE of the defiant tough activist doing anything for the unborn.

I believe that maybe Sheen was at an abortion mill protest many years ago. That is MAYBE.

Sheen has donated thousands of dollars to the country's most rabid PRO ABORT politicians.

Sheens amicus brief was for free speech just like PETA. He believes pro lifers have the right to protest just like he has the right to publicly call president Bush, "A Goddamn liar." Which he has.

Just a couple of monthes ago at the ACLU michigan annual dinner Sheen told Pridesource that it was "Outrageous" that Michigan had a state constitutional ban on same sex marriage. A month or so before that He was the headliner at the black tie dinner fundraiser for gay activists in Dallas. He made a nice donation for their auction and gave an interview to the Dallas Voice where he calls republicans "bastards", President Bush the above and "shit" and the administration "a damn bunch of lying bastards."

Don't interpret Jill Stanek's post as an endorsement of Martin Sheen as a pro-life activist. I hope she did not intend that to be the case though one pro life blogger said if Sheen was prolife enough for Jill Stanek he was pro life enough for him.

I admire Jill Stanek and I admire her work. I hope she might clarify the reason for her post. If she has some actual evidence of Sheen being "out there" in defense of the unborn then I hope she will post it.

Don't take my word for what I've attributed to Sheen go to www.dallasvoice.com/artman/publish/article_7090.php and read for yourself. The Dallas Voice stands by their story and everyone of Sheen's quotes.

Going out somewhere with friends is just as much lot of fun, as coming to this website. Always has something to laugh at, a lot of things to share with each other, and it’s much easier to make friends here, than anyone would think! I come to this website when I have problems, and always leave it in a good mood. It really helps a lot!
