Project Condom

condom%206.jpgA unique fashion show was held at the University of South Carolina March 5.

Project Condom, sponsored by Sexual Health Awareness and Rape Education and Development for Sexual Health and Violence Prevention, "was designed to promote awareness and break social stigmas surrounding sexual practices," according to the student newspaper The Daily Gamecock.

Models wore designs made completely of condoms. Students were "excited," noted TDG.

Oh, "[a]n abstinence garment was also featured," as well as "commercials relaying sexual health statistics and promoting abstinence."

Right. I'm sure the abstinence message gave students a pregant pause for reflection. I'm sure it wasn't meant as a p.s. or a cover for Mom and Dad.

Comments:

I dont' think I've ever seen anything so vulgar or crass in my entire life.
And such beautiful young women too. What a shame!

Y'know, you gotta admit, it takes quite a bit of creativity to make clothes out of condoms...

Some of those dresses would be super cute to wear normally as long as they weren't made out of condoms, lol.

Posted by: Ari-chan at March 13, 2008 4:12 PM

Ari-chan, you rock! Have to laugh.

Posted by: Doug at March 13, 2008 4:17 PM

And I'll tell you what - in 1959, March 13 was a Friday.

Posted by: Doug at March 13, 2008 4:18 PM

LOL Ari, so true. It's cute that they tried to make it like a project runway thing. In one of the auditions for PR2 someone did put (unopened) condoms on their clothes. It was funny. The judges looked amused and then Robert says, "can I take one?"

I wonder what the abstinence one looked like.

How was your day? :)

Posted by: Carla at March 13, 2008 4:43 PM

haha Sally. They totally should have made it like Robin Hood. That was the one with the chastity belt key right?

Posted by: prettyinpink at March 13, 2008 4:44 PM

It seems there's no end in sight to our sorry excuse of a culture's Bullwinkle approach ("This time for sure!") to promoting The Almighty Condom.

Condoms aren't the answer.

Chastity, self-mastery, and real love are the answer.

Unless and until we realize that, we're doomed.

Posted by: John Jansen at March 13, 2008 4:46 PM

@PiP: It's very Project Runway! I heard Christian won this season! That makes me so happy!

Who knew condoms could come in so many colors?

Posted by: Ari-chan at March 13, 2008 4:49 PM

Are the fully dressed ones for abstinence? This is the dumbest thing I've seen.
Thanks, John for your comments!!

Posted by: Carla at March 13, 2008 5:12 PM

They never did show the 'excited' students; perhaps there were none, or they were 'too' excited, if you get my drift.

In picture entitled 'condom2.jpg' (The one with the man and woman with cards/envelopes in their hands). The man looks a little concerned (perhaps he forgot to wear one last time). Also the sign above their head is NSFW.

Posted by: Sally at March 13, 2008 5:34 PM

Ye-yah!

Ari, to me it just shows how the producers need to learn from this season. This season they chose a lot of professionals and it got boring. Christian was young and passionate and exciting and talented. We need more young, let-it-loose characters on the show, to see both fresh and upcoming faces as well as some hilarious moments in the workroom.

The parents who pay the tuition, should demand a refund. Higher education?

Posted by: Bismarck at March 13, 2008 5:57 PM

@PiP: I didn't see the whole season unfortunately due to a lack of cable TV, but the ones I did see were darned entertaining.

Christian rocked my socks though, his designs (especially the avant-garde one were amazing! Plus, he had the best hair out of everybody. :)

Posted by: Ari-chan at March 13, 2008 6:04 PM

@Bismarck: My school wastes more money on building a football stadium for a team that was 1-10 this year than that school did for this event.

Seriously, if anybody wants to demand a refund on tuition, it ought to be me and any other U of MN students who's tuition rate is getting jacked up because of that darn football stadium (or Mausoleum of FAILURE as I call it).

Posted by: Ari-chan at March 13, 2008 6:06 PM

Ari- you should see seasons 1-3...those were infinitely more entertaining!!

Posted by: prettyinpink at March 13, 2008 6:18 PM

I remember seeing part of the season where Jeffrey won...I didn't watch it before last year and the only reason I watched it last year was because my roomate loved it. :)

Posted by: Ari-chan at March 13, 2008 6:22 PM

Yeah that was season 3. I have all of them, come on over and I'll show em to ya ;)

Posted by: prettyinpink at March 13, 2008 7:18 PM

"was designed to promote awareness and break social stigmas surrounding sexual practices," according to the student newspaper The Daily Gamecock.

I'm really confused. I'm not seeing how women wearing colored-condom dresses would encourage a man to wear one during sexual intercourse.

Oh wait, I get it now!!!! I just looked at the photo (4th one down) and read the words behind the man and woman, and then the 6th photo down. NOW I GET IT!!! Fashion show!

Posted by: JLM at March 13, 2008 7:44 PM

How is this vulgar and crass, I ask? No one was forced to go- and yes, condoms should be advertised and made into a talking point- use condoms correctly, and your risk of getting pregnant or contacting an STI? Way down. People need to stop being afraid of condoms. This isn't telling people to have sex. It's saying that condoms should be used instead of nothing. More condoms, less unprotected sex, less unplanned pregnancies, less need for abortion. That's how I see it.

Stephanie- Yes! That's exactly what I was thinking. One of my friends in high school did that with her boyfriend, they had Scarlett O'Hara and Rhett Butler outfits made entirely of duct tape. Coolest thing EVAR.

As the student who planned Project Condom at UofSC, I want to thank all of those who took the time to read the story and understand the reasoning behind why we held Project Condom. The fact is, 3/4ths of UofSC students had sex with at least 1 person last year, of that less than 50% used condoms. SC is never 1st in the nation for anything positive, but we are in the top 10 for teen pregnancy, HIV/AIDS, gonorrhea and chlamydia. If the students are having sex, they need to be protecting themselves.

The theme of the event was "EveryONE has a choice" with choices including condoms, contraceptives, safety, communication, and abstinence. The main slide for the show emphasized the abstinence is the only 100% effective protection but that everyone should know how to use a condom for whenever they are ready to have sex. The abstinence dress included white condoms covered in lace with a belt that said "In due time" and a heart shaped locket around her neck. The #1 market for condoms is Married Couples, bet those of you who said my show was disgusting didn't know that. Please do your homework before throwing out closeminded criticism. Thanks to this blog owner for posting our story! We hope Project Runway or other schools will pick up Project Condom for their campuses.

Posted by: Ryan Wilson at March 14, 2008 2:43 PM

Thanks, Ryan! I could perhaps run the idea by the one group I'm a part of at Penn State...not quite sure if we have something like "Project Condom". Great job!

silly nonsence which encourages fornication....

Posted by: Jasper at March 14, 2008 9:14 PM

Crap like this trivializes it...and you really expect teens to take this seriously?

Posted by: truthseeker at March 14, 2008 11:28 PM

Ryan,
Thank you for taking the time to explain what your "fashion show" was all about.

In my opinion, if people came out to see this and the slideshow, they would feel better about having sex by simply using a condom. It would make what they are doing acceptable by means of a piece of latex.

BS!!!

Did you also tell them that "as adorable and useful as these pretty little condoms are, that they do not protect you 100% from diseases? This is taken from the FDA's website: http://www.fda.gov/oashi/aids/condom.html

"Will a condom guarantee I won't get a sexually transmitted disease?

No. There's no absolute guarantee even when you use a condom. But most experts believe that the risk of getting AIDS and other sexually transmitted diseases can be greatly reduced if a condom is used properly."

Oh, and not to mention your "anal sex" views...Did you guys happen to mention this????
(also from the FDA website)

"Are condoms strong enough for anal intercourse?
The Surgeon General (C. Everett Koop, Surgeon General 1982-1989) has said, "Condoms provide some protection, but anal intercouse is simply too dangerous to practice"

Condoms may be more likely to break during anal intercourse than during other types of sex because of the greater amount of friction and other stresses involved.

Even if the condom doesn't break, anal intercourse is very risky because it can cause tissue in the rectum to tear and bleed. These tears allow disease germs to pass more easily from one partner to the other."

In other words, sex with condoms isn't totally "safe sex," but it is "less risky" sex."

Kudos to you, Brian, and your school for promoting a means for "less risky" sex. I wonder how many naive and gullable students will fall for this garbage and develop a sexually transmitted disease that may kill them, thanks to your little fashion show....Good job!

Posted by: JLM at March 15, 2008 12:19 PM

JLM, well said!

Posted by: Bethany at March 15, 2008 12:41 PM

An abstinence garment would be...a pair of pants, right?

How sad it is that pregnancy is lumped in there with venereal diseases, though...

Posted by: bmmg39 at March 15, 2008 2:47 PM

Jasper, I don't have the same resistance to "fornication" as you do, yet if 1 in 4 teen girls has an STD, then DANG, something is wrong here.

I've got 21 nieces and nephews...Yikes.

Doug

P.S. :: thanking goodness I never had one ::

I like everything positive. I’m on this website since the first day of its existence and I have never seen anything negative on it. This website is made by people, who think positive and who have many things to tell others. I love this website, I always get positive emotions from it and I can stay here the whole days and nights!
