Anti-abstinence bigotry

Hello from DC again. I had just returned home from a weeklong business/pleasure trip when I got a call 2 days ago to replace a cancelled speaker at a pro-life event, and here I am again, happily. Get to visit my daughter Daena as well as connect with pro-life policy friends. So I'll be blogging from DC another week.

At the event tonight someone told me about the following video. It was taken at the Rep Henry Waxman (D-CA) sham of a hearing against abstinence education last week. He called 6 witnesses to testify against and 1 for.

Republican Rep. Virginia Foxx (NC) asked the stacked deck a simple, telling question: Would they support abstinence funding if it were proven to be as or more effective than comprehensive sex ed?

No words.

UPDATE, 5/1, 6:45a: I have found words. These liberal ideologues are so zealous they're willing to be openly irrational.

Murderer of twins cannot be charged with murder

shuffield 5.jpgLast week I reported on preborn twins who were killed during an IN bank robbery. Their mother, Katherin Shuffield, is pictured right with their father Jason.

News reports indicated the gunman (not yet caught) could not be charged with murder because the babies weren't viable, as IN law stipulates. I questioned this, since the doctors decided to deliver the babies, meaning they thought the babies stood a better chance of surviving outside their mother's uterus than inside... meaning they were potentially viable.

Mike Fichter, president of IN Right to Life, has emailed details...

Egan vs. Giuliani

Robert Novak wrote in his syndicated column April 28:

Did pro-choice politicians receiving Communion at the papal Masses indicate the pope had softened on the abortion question? The answer is no. On the contrary, it reflected disobedience to Benedict by the archbishops of New York and Washington.

giuliania communion.jpg

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Sens. John Kerry, Christopher Dodd and Edward M. Kennedy received Communion at Nationals Park in DC, as did former mayor Rudolph Giuliani at Yankee Stadium in NY. Archbishop Donald Wuerl of Washington and Cardinal Edward Egan, archbishop of NY, invited them. Given choice seats, they took Communion as a matter of course....

"We reject abortion because we are left-wing"

Well, here is an interesting view, an op ed written by the SAIn Political Party (Internationalist Self-Management and Solidarity) in Spain, as quoted from Solidaridad.net, May 2 (bold highlights theirs):

solidar.gif

In the last eight years under the Popular Party's administration, abortion has risen by 37%, reaching almost 80.000 abortions per year.... [due to a] policy... result[ing] in free abortion practice during the first 3 months of pregnancy....

With such a "pseudo-progressive" measure as abortion advocacy a so-called socialist party... has explicitly put forward a neoliberal political and economic capitalist program.

We strongly disapprove of abortion because we are left-wing. Likewise, we are against any assault on life, such as death penalty, torture, hunger, armament, war, destruction of the environment... We therefore proclaim that these are values the Left must vindicate....

Pills or dinner?

"Pills or dinner?" was the subject heading of Planned Parenthood CEO Cecile Richards' email alert yesterday.

The premise is ridiculous: that due to rising prices of artificial female steroids, i.e., birth control pills, college nyphomaniacs are being forced to choose between illicit sex and eating.

bc pp.jpgHere's what happened. Legislators passed the Deficit Reduction Act of 2005 to save $40 billion over 5 years. A consequence, according to U.S. News & World Report:

A quirk in a new federal law, designed to save taxpayers money on Medicaid reimbursements for drugs, has effectively persuaded pharmaceutical companies to stop selling their products to these [university] pharmacies at deeply discounted rates. (If companies continue to offer such discounts, the law stipulates, they will also receive lower payments from Medicaid.)

Shock: the government isn't buying the whining. In response to one request to restore the loophole, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid wrote, according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette...

South Dakota abortion ban redux

I commend SD pro-lifers for their diligence.

In 2006 they introduced a referendum outlawing all abortions except to save a mother's life. It lost 56-44%. Exit polls showed it would have won had it included exceptions.

(As an aside, it was during this time Oglala Sioux president Cecelia Fire Thunder infamously threatened to open a mill on her reservation should the ban pass, inspiring me to write one of my more controversially received columns, "Sioux tribe plans to scalp its own.")

Well, prepare for a redux. On April 18 the SD Secretary of State certified 3x the number of petition signatures needed to put a new abortion ban referendum on November's ballot. This ban will include very tightly worded exceptions for rape, incest, and health.

Bear in mind SD abortionists are currently not obligated to report rape/incest....

Father hides daughter in cellar dungeon 24 years; fathers 7 children

fritzl.jpgThis is a horrifying story from Austria. It is not directly tied to the pro-life issue but is so shocking I must blog on it. Reported the AFP today:

An elderly Austrian... confessed Monday to imprisoning his daughter in a cellar for 24 years and fathering her 7 children, prosecutors said.

Josef Fritzl, 73, "has admitted building the dungeon and to holding his daughter and three children there," prosecution spokesman Gerhard Sedlacek [said].

    Weekend question

weekend question.jpgDavid Bereit, founder of 40 Days for Life, reported this week that of 63 abortion mills pro-lifers conducted 40 days of continuous prayer this spring during Lent - many round-the-clock - 2 have stopped committing abortions and 1 has closed altogether.

Planned Parenthoods in Lincoln, Nebraska, and Council Bluffs, Iowa, have now stopped offering abortion, and Abortion Services, at 200 East Eckerson Road in New York City, closed altogether yesterday.

Several questions. Do you think 40 Days had anything to do with the abortion curtailment, or were these just coincidental incidents? Do you think sustained prayer vigils/pickets at abortion mills can ultimately shut them down by slowing business long enough? Do you think this form of protest is legitimate or harrassment? george.jpgI spent the last week in DC, so my ability to blog was spotty. Just got home and am happy be relieved of the angst over posts I've been missing. I had a great time, mixing pro-life business with friend/family pleasure; I was just torn.

A high point came yesterday when I was able to touch the sacrophagus of George Washington in his tomb when we visited Mt. Vernon. There are 2 wreathing ceremonies every day, and I volunteered at 1 to help place the wreath inside the tomb.

A short walk away lay several hundred unmarked graves of many of Washington's slaves. Although in his will he gave them their freedom upon Martha's death, and indeed the bulk of his will dealt with that and their care after emancipation, the fact is this great man enslaved people while fighting for our freedom, an almost inexplicable contraction unless one considers the culture of that time....

    Yale: double standard bearer

    Yale Daily News reported yesterday:

[A] Yale official said that a scientific test found no traces of human blood in the Davenport College senior's art studio, although there was no way to determine whether the project in its entirety had been examined.

Yale was looking for evidence that student Aliza Shvarts had or had not inseminated then aborted herself numerous times over 9 months for an art project.

yale bloodspot.jpgWhat will Yale do if it eventually finds red stuff in Shvarts' proximity? Test it, apparently. Will it require a sample of Shvarts' blood for a DNA match? Will it check for another human's DNA, her dead offspring?

This should alarm abortion proponents, whose primary defense of said act is "the right to privacy!" these days. But so far they haven't risen against Yale for this invasion, as they have risen against OH parents for wanting the same information from an abortion mill re: their minor daughter's illegal abortion, as they have risen against KS prosecutor Phill Kline for wanting the same information from abortion mills to confirm or deny illegal abortions. So far they've remained silent here. Why?...

    Is "AbortionMan" pro-life?

Right before comedian Chris Rock was to emcee the Academy Awards in 2005, Matt Drudge linked to a story about one of Rock's routines, abortion. In that routine Rock said:

Abortion, it's beautiful, it's beautiful abortion is legal. I love going to an abortion rallies to pick up women, cause you know they are f---ing. You ain't gonna find a bunch of virgins at the abortion rallies.

View the entire bit here, but be warned it's vulgarity-laced.

It turned out Rock was using satire to speak against abortion, according to trusted conservative sources.

Now several readers have written to say Damon Wayans' AbortionMan routine, which JivinJ exposed here and I wrote about on WorldNetDaily.com, was acted in the same vein: satire. Could they be right?

    Someone at Yale is lying

This story is so important, I'm staying on it during the weekend.

I've been reporting (here and here) on Yale senior Aliza Shvarts, who plans to display an art exhibit beginning April 22 of early abortions she self-committed.

For unspecified numerous times over 9 months, Shvarts artificially inseminated herself and later ingested abortifacients, filming herself aborting in the bathtub.

Shvarts plans to display the blood and body products on a cube suspended from the ceiling, wrapped in plastic sheeting, with video of her abortions simultaneously playing on surrounding walls.

The Yale administration posted a denial Thursday, specifically stating:

[Shvarts] stated to three senior Yale University officials today, including two deans, that she did not impregnate herself and that she did not induce any miscarriages.

The next day Shvarts refuted Yale's statement, according to Yale Daily News.

shvarts.jpgNow Shvarts has released her own statement calling the Yale administration liars, for all intents and purposes:

For the past year, I performed repeated self-induced miscarriages. I created a group of fabricators from volunteers who submitted to periodic STD screenings and agreed to their complete and permanent anonymity. From the 9th to the 15th day of my menstrual cycle, the fabricators would provide me with sperm samples, which I used to privately self-inseminate. Using a needleless syringe, I would inject the sperm near my cervix within 30 minutes of its collection, so as to insure the possibility of fertilization. On the 28th day of my cycle, I would ingest an abortifacient, after which I would experience cramps and heavy bleeding.

These 2 statements directly contradict each other....

    One mother's miscarriage, a pro-abort's joke

    by Bethany Kerr

A few days ago I gave Jill permission to post manipulations of a photo of my miscarried baby someone named "Barbra Walters" emailed me.

Cruelly intended, the photoshopped pictures did not cause me grief as some here worried. I knew the ideology of the person sending them and have developed a tolerance for pro-abortion cruelty.

That said, there are still some things to learn about the pro-abortion mind, as I found out.

insult1.jpgI let Jill post the pictures to help people understand how deeply depraved abortion proponents can be. I thought this would demonstrate in the worst terms what they do: treat the unborn child as a worthless object and deny grief by ridiculing mourning mothers who have lost their children either through abortion or miscarriage.

I was surprised though, when a couple liberal bloggers picked up my post and to their shame added to the ridicule. Could it get worse? Yes.

How about equating miscarried babies with food, making the photoshopped photos our fault, and threatening "by any means necessary" would they fight this battle?

"AuschWeitz," clever. That's what pro-lifers have nicknamed the upscale Anschutz residential/store building project in a Denver suburb being constructed by Weitz Company.

You remember Weitz, the general contractor building Planned Parenthood's 50,000 sq. ft. mega-abortion mill in Denver.

Pro-lifers warned Weitz in January to bail on the PP project or reap the consequences of management home and business picketing.

Weitz didn't, so pro-lifers launched the Collaborators Project, which has proven so successful anti-1st Amendment lawmakers introduced legislation to limit home pickets that looks likely to pass.

Meanwhile, the pickets go on, no matter the attempts to stifle. Now, the Anschutz project has covered Weitz's name, not good for PR:

    weitz coverup.jpg

And the pickets have borne fruit. Will Duffy, head of the Collaborators Project, reported in an email update that pro-lifers in Portland, OR, have joined up to stop a PP mill from being built in the middle of a black neighborhood. And Precious Children of Portland just announced Walsh Construction has pulled from that project as general contractor. Good for Walsh.

Meanwhile, back in CO, Will reported that the 2nd security firm PP hired quit after only 4 days on the job, thanks to a home picket.

    YouTube divorce

Here's another mental health break post.

This one is all over the news today. Actress and playwright Tricia Walsh-Smith has posted a sad, funny, slightly shocking video on YouTube outting the guy divorcing her, Philip Smith, president of the Shubert Organization, "the largest theater owner on Broadway," according to AOL News, adding:

She also makes embarrassing claims regarding their intimate life, and then calls his office on camera to repeat those claims to a stunned assistant.

Senate Leaders Reid and McConnell [pictured right together] made a deal to confirm three appeals court nominees by Memorial Day; Sen. Levin and the White House reached an agreement to fill two long-standing vacancies on the 6th Circuit; and Sen. Specter asked Sens. Obama, Clinton, and McCain to declare their position on a possible motion to discharge three circuit nominees - Peter Keisler (DC Cir.), Bob Conrad (4th Cir.), and Steve Matthews (4th Cir.) - bottled up in the Judiciary Committee by Sen. Leahy.

Here's our take on the day's news, followed by excerpts from news reports....

    Shockingly ignorant Sen. Bob Casey

    pope sign 3.jpg

Yesterday, the American Life League ran the above full-page ad in the Washington Times. View the large pdf version here.

I was glad to see ALL added Sen. Robert Casey to its list of "Pro-abortion 'Catholics'," because he is. Despite claiming to the contrary, Casey voted last year to overturn the Mexico City Policy, which stops US tax funds from going to international abortion groups.

But Bob Casey's most flagrant affront to the sanctity of life was recently endorsing Barack Obama for president. CNS News covered that very topic today...

    Pope at White House

It's an exciting, beautiful morning in DC. In about an hour the President and a "mass" (pardon the pun... :) of 12,000 will greet the Pope on the South Lawn of the White House, the largest throng ever to gather there. What a memorable "Happy Birthday" they should sing to him, as today he turns 81.

My daughter is in the crowd, as is Dawn Eden of The Dawn Patrol, and Scott Johnston, friend to commenter Andrew and me, who used to work for Priests for Life. Just spoke with them, and they all made it through security and are now standing by the fountain.

The Pope is expected to address the Life issue while here, certainly when he speaks before the United Nations Friday on the 60th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, and hopefully more often than that.

pope andrews.jpgThe Passionate Pro-Lifer did note in an "Irony Alert" yesterday that one of the Pontiff's greeters as he arrived at Andrews Air Force Base yesterday was Nancy Brinker, US Chief of Protocol and friend of Laura Bush, who also who just happens to have founded the Susan G Komen Foundation.

As PPL reported, "Just this past week, it was revealed that Komen gave $700K to Planned Parenthood."

Life can't be perfect, but it is still a beautiful day, even here in Chicago!

    Hannity's America: Planned Parenthood's rape cover-up

Sunday night Hannity's America ran another exposé on Planned Parenthood.

The segment began by playing the 2nd of Lila Rose's audiotapes showing PP would accept money to abort black babies.

But the bulk of the story was about an Ohio PP that aborted a 14-year-old girl who had been impregnated by her 21-year-old soccer coach.

OH has a parental consent law, but PP never contacted this girl's parents, who were interviewed for the story. The girl, who said her rapist coerced her to abort, gave PP the man's phone number for consent.

The family now has hired a high-powered attorney and are suing the PP in a case to be heard by the OH Supreme Court. PP is also being charged with failing to report suspected child abuse. PP is fighting release of the girl's medical records, of course.

New Stanek WND column, "Barack Obama and the sex life of 12 year olds"

    WND%20logo.gif

I'm not naïve. I know there are 12-year-olds in the world having sex. But it's not normal behavior. A 6th-grader seeking sex lives in a dysfunctional home. More likely she is being raped by an adult perpetrator. That's not what I say. That's what Planned Parenthood and Guttmacher Institute say:
The younger the mother, the greater the partner age gap.... Fathers are on average 9.8 years older than mothers 11 to 12 years of age.

I have never known or heard of a father, diligent or absentee, liberal or conservative, who pondered aloud that his 9-year-old daughter in three short years might have unprotected consensual sex, so we must make contraceptives and abortion available to her.

Such a father would be creepy, close to a pedophilia promoter.

Such a father would be Barack Obama, who indicated such at Sunday's Compassion Forum....

National Right to Life clamps down

nrlc.gifOn April 5 the National Right to Life Committee's board of directors passed this resolution in response to GA Right to Life's endorsement of Mike Huckabee for president rather than NRLC's choice, Fred Thompson, and Iowa RTL's decision to go neutral:

BE IT RESOLVED that it is the policy and a goal and purpose of National Right to Life that no state affiliate, member or alternate of the National Right to Life Board of Directors endorse or support any candidate for President of the United States other than a candidate endorsed or supported by National Right to Life.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that if National Right to Life supports or endorses a candidate for President of the United States, then it is the policy and a goal and purpose of National Right to Life that no state affiliate, member or alternate of the National Right to Life Board of Directors publicly oppose or voice neutrality or non-support for that candidate.

NRLC does good work, to be sure. But I've noted before the same leaders have been in position far too long - decades - which IMO has led to a Beltway rather than grassroots mentality and a DC power rush that leads them to make some decisions not for the good of the organization or the pro-life movement but for the good of the ones in control.

This was one of those decisions....

New York Times editorial: allow birth control patch lawsuits

ortho.jpgEvery now and then there is clarity on the Left.

Feminists hyperprotect contraceptives from adverse publicity, since they supposedly equalize the sex-playing field. They're also a huge money maker.

We on the Right are called Neanderthals for pointing out hormonal contraceptives in particular are dangerous to women, infusing small or large amounts of artificial female steroids into a woman's body on a daily, weekly, monthly, yearly, and decades-long basis. With no more information than that, red flags should be raised. But feminists bat them down.

Now comes an April 14 New York Times editorial calling for harmed women to have the freedom to sue the manufacturer of the dangerous Ortho Evra bc patch...

I posted photos April 4 of hanging rubber chickens and such at the very creepy Northern Illinois Women's Center abortion mill in Rockford, IL.

I said I would blog on a lawsuit pro-lifers have filed when they were able to post a video substantiating their case. That day has come.

Pro-lifers are suing the City of Rockford for removing their pro-life message from a bus bench and also for failing to protect them as they protested at NIWC. Also included in the suit are Wayne Webster, the building's owner, and a neighbor, Keith Sterkeson.

Here is video of Sterkeson repeatedly calling a pro-lifer the n-word, throwing in the f-bomb for good measure. He also bizarrely yells kudos to an admitted "mom" for aborting, adding, "You're doing the right thing, and God will honor you!" as if that comment would bring her comfort?

The sex life of Obama's 12-year-old daughter

malia.jpgObama is talking freakier and freakier about the projected sex lives of his young daughters.

Everyone is familiar by now with Obama's infamous March 29 statement:

Look, I got two daughters - 9 years old and 6 years old. I am going to teach them first about values and morals, but if they make a mistake, I don't want them punished with a baby. I don't want them punished with an STD at age 16, so it doesn't make sense to not give them information.

At the time I wanted to puke at Obama's suggestion he would not just condone but push to abort his own grandchildren since he considered teen pregnancies punishment.

But at last night's Compassion Forum in PA Obama lowered the threshhold his daughters might "make a mistake" and have sex from age 16 to "12 or 13." What kind of sicko is this guy? First came the question from Newsweek's Jon Meacham...

    Weekend question

weekend question.jpgAbout a nationwide poll it conducted April 7-9, the Associated Press reported:

Against McCain, Obama lost ground among women - from 57% in February to 47% in April. Obama dropped 12 points among women under 45, 14 points among suburban women and 15 points among married women.

Polls will come and go, but looking back over the past several weeks, why do you think Obama's support among women dropped so drastically?

An interesting aside: As bad as the poll was for Obama, it was still skewed in his favor: The AP interviewed 489 Democrat voters and only 369 Republicans.

Planned Parenthood claims pro-life view turns off women

    by Steven Ertelt

Planned Parenthood continues to do everything possible to protect its abortion income -- including claiming a pro-life view is a turnoff for women voters.

Yet polling data shows 64 percent of women voters don't want a candidate who voted against the partial-birth abortion ban; 68 percent don't want a candidate who supports taxpayer-funded abortion; and 73 percent don't want a candidate who opposes parental involvement.

Who holds those kinds of radical pro-abortion positions? Oh yeah -- Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama.

With data like that, it's no wonder Bush had a 9 percent advantage over Kerry among voters who said abortion was important and won single issue abortion voters 3-1.

Obama and Clinton have a long way to go to prove to voters they're not the radicals they really are -- and with Obama's repeated attempts to block the "live birth abortion" bill in Illinois, he can't been seen as anything but an extremist.

    Abortion didn't decrease crime

    by Steven Ertelt

Yet another confirmation that abortion didn't result in a reduction in crime. In fact, the trio of economists who analyzed the repeatedly-disproven Freakanomics theory found that violent crimes in the UK shot up tremendously following abortion legalization.

A lack of respect for lie fosters a lack of respect for life.

    From the story

"Violent crime does not decrease at all over the period. The trends are not supportive of a link between abortion and crime," the economists write.

"Given all this, it seems highly unlikely that the legalization of abortion can, as Donohue and Levitt hypothesized, explain the dramatic drop in crime observed in the US in the 1990s."

Two other "disproofs" are mentioned in the article.

Bonus: Extras from Expelled producer interview

expelled 5.jpgThis week I interviewed Expelled producer Mark Mathis for my WorldNetDaily column.

The interview lasted an hour, and reading comments to my column from Darwinian apologists, I see Mathis covered many questions and misinformation: What exactly is Expelled about? Were Darwinian academics/scientists hoodwinked into being interviewed for the film? Did the film purposefully misinterpret their thoughts? What about that Scientific American review? Does teaching Intelligent Design violate the separation of Church and State? Is teaching ID just a backdoor attempt to teach religion in the schools?

Mathis has been conducting Q&A after Expelled screenings across the country and said the experience has been eye-opening. What was the biggest surprise, I asked?

Does Casey not understand the threshold upon which he and his nation now stand? Roe v. Wade is at last in peril, but if he achieves his dream of an Obama presidency, Obama can tip the Supreme Court's balance in a pro-Roe direction for decades to come. There have been 40 million abortions since 1973.

Consequently, Senator Casey's endorsement of Obama is an undeniable betrayal of his, his father's, and his church's pro-life work and commitment.

    its appeal melted....

Liberals have been going ape about Expelled for months as it has been

"This is not a scientific battle; this is a worldview battle," Expelled producer Mark Mathis told me.

Fence removed from vacant lot across from Planned Parenthood Aurora

    by Bethany Kerr:

I was just notified by email that the chain link fence around the area of the vacant lot owned by Safeway/Dominicks (across from Planned Parenthood Aurora), has been removed.

The fence went up in October, after PP launched a nationwide effort to harrass Dominicks with emails complaining about pro-life presence on their property.

It was supposed to be removed on December 10, 2007, however, it was not until yesterday.

We do not know whether they will be building a new permanent fence or whether they will leave the fence down... but what we do know is that the fence's presence did absolutely NOTHING to hinder pro-life efforts.

UPDATE 4/10: From a recent post on his blog, it appears the Newsweek reporter may taken liberties with Pastor Hamilton's position on abortion. It seems (from the blog post) that a more correct label for his position would be prolife-with-exceptions rather than pro-choice. I still haven't had time to listen to the audio of his sermon and I'm just starting to read the abortion chapter in his book which was recently made available online.

  • Newsweek has a small article entitled, "How Would Jesus Choose" about pro-choice Methodist pastor Adam Hamilton who prefers to call himself "pro-life with a heavy heart" even though he believes abortion should be legal and available.

The Newsweek article notes how Hamilton received a letter from his mother which mentioned how she was pressured to but refused to have an abortion when she was a teenager. The article doesn't note if the child who wasn't aborted was Hamilton or one of his siblings.

You can listen to a sermon on abortion by Hamilton from 2004 at the web site of the United Methodist Church.

  • Scientists from the Whitehead Institute for Biomedical Research have used induced pluripotent stem cells to treat Parkinson's in rats. According to MIT stem cell scientist Rudolf Jaenisch, "These cells are more readily available and much less controversial than embryonic stem cells. But they seem to have identical potential."

  • Saline abortions, obsolete?

    by Valerie Jane

We've had many discussions on this blog about saline abortions. Abortion proponents claim saline abortions are not committed anymore, so our pictures of them are obsolete or faked.

But according to the CDC in 2004, there were 4,574 saline abortions for 43 out of 52 reporting area's. Saline abortions took place in approximately 1% of abortions since 1989; 2% of abortions from 1983 - 1988; and that it has been taking place under 3% of all abortions since 1981.

All of that sounds low, right?

    Take a look at this:

    1995 - 6,000 (approx) saline abortions
    2000 - 3,400 (approx) saline abortions
    2002 - 6,800 (approx) saline abortions
    2003 - 7,600 (approx) saline abortions
    2004 - 4,500 (approx) saline abortions

When it is put in numbers it makes a bit of difference, doesn't it? Now let's break it down further.

    In 2004 there were:

    375 saline abortions every month
    87 saline abortions every week
    12 saline abortions every day

That doesn't sound like something that is never done anymore does it?

    ****

Note: The medical term for this procedure is "Intrauterine Instillation abortion" The chemicals used can be consisting of either saline, urea or prostaglandin.

Embryonic stem cell research not successful but alternatives are

    by Steven Ertelt

Yet another very real confirmation that pro-life advocates have been right all along on embryonic stem cell research. We don't have to sacrifice human life to improve it.

First, a report from England that its top stem cell scientist, Lord Patel of Dunkeld, is beginning to admit defeat:

"In terms of embryonic stem cell therapy, there is currently no such therapy that is available in a large number of patients. It may not deliver therapy for anything. We may find that stem therapy is quite a risky business."

Secondly, scientists in Boston used an ethical alternative, direct reprogramming, to alleviate Parkinson's in mice.

They are once again proving we don't need to destroy human embryos (read: tiny unborn children who are unique human beings) to advance science and help patients suffering from diseases. We need cures, not clones.

Mexico City may have seen 8 women die from legal abortions

    by Steven Ertelt

It's no surprise when the American media fails to cover the deaths of women from legal abortions. Now, it appears the same thing is happening in Mexico.

    From the story:

Jorge Serrano Limón of the Mexican National Pro-Life (Provida) Committee says he has information showing several deaths: "We have the information, dates, and hospitals where they died" even though "the authorities will only recognize the underage girl who died in Balbuena Hospital."

Mexico City's leading newspaper already confirmed one death. How long will it take for them to report on the rest?

    Show me the money

    by Valerie Ryan

A Miami Heraldstory is about abortionists being legally required to show a women an ultrasound picture if she wants to see it. It is not required otherwise:

"Rep. Joyce Cusack, a Democrat... noted that not every abortion clinic has ultrasound equipment and those that do will have to charge patients more to offer the procedures.

Opponents of the measure said the procedure could cost a woman as much as $700, while supporters said the cost would likely be less than $100."

What I find interesting is that crisis pregnancy centers manage to do them for free.

Another thought, how do these people verify gestational age, without the ultrasound, to make sure the safest procedure is being performed?

National Right to Life supports John McCain for President

    by Steven Ertelt

Nice to get to break some big news for Jill today...

One of the leading pro-life groups has announced it is supporting John McCain for president. No surprise there. While National Right to Life and McCain disagree on embryonic stem cell research and campaign finance reform, it recognizes the very obvious and clear demarcation between McCain and Obama/Clinton on abortion.

McCain gives the pro-life movement a shot at overturning Roe and won't go back on the numerous pro-life gains we made during the Bush years. Obama and Clinton guarantee 35 more years of legalized abortion, paid for by our tax dollars, and with the assurance that it will also be funded and promoted overseas. A no-brainer between the two.

    From the story:

"National Right to Life supports Senator John McCain for election as President of the United States and strongly opposes both Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton and urges all pro-life citizens to do likewise," the group told LifeNews.com on Monday.

"Senator John McCain, has consistently taken a strong pro-life position against abortion, has a strong pro-life voting record against abortion and opposes Roe v. Wade," NRLC said in its statement of support.

French woman fooled the world on assisted suicide request

    by Steven Ertelt

So the latest news out of France is that Chantal Sebire allowed herself to get in the condition she was in so she could press for assisted suicide.

Sebire, as Jill's readers will recall, is the woman with a terrible facial tumor who received international attention for her condition and French courts denying her request for a doctor to help her kill herself.

Well, now come to find out she a) refused medical treatment, b) refused offers of surgery to correct the problem and lead a normal life, and c) refused both drugs and palliative care to help her deal with the pain.

Sadly, this woman appeared to have a death wish and appeared more interested in promoting the pro-euthanasia political agenda than genuinely seeking legitimate medical care.

This reminds of the problems in Oregon - where the assisted suicide law is not operating as it should.

Sebire's situation was certainly heart-wrenching and she originally deserved all the support in the world, but these new revelations make it tough to consider her anything but a political opportunist. And it takes away from the real pain patients with no control over their situations deal with on a daily basis.

  • Jeff Jacoby on sex-selection abortion in America:
Most Americans rightly regard sex-selective abortions as odious; in a 2006 Zogby poll, an overwhelming 86% of Americans agreed that such abortions should be illegal. But they're not illegal - and as economists Douglas Almond and Lena Edlund indicate in the latest issue of PNAS, they are now occurring in the United States, too.

Almond and Edlund examined the ratio of boys to girls among US children born to Chinese, Korean, and Indian parents. For the first children of these Asian-American families, the sex ratio was the normal 1.05-to-1. But when the first baby is a girl, the odds of the second being a boy rose to 1.17-to-1. After two sisters, the likelihood of the third being a son leaped to 1.51-to-1. This is clear "evidence of sex selection, most likely at the prenatal stage," the authors write.

    Weekend question

weekend question.jpgThis week Oprah and People magazine introduced the world to what most news organizations have mislabeled a pregnant "man."

In reality Thomas Beatie is a woman who had her breasts removed and injected herself with testosterone to take on male characteristics. She became pregnant by artificial insemination with the help of her female "wife."

On Friday, in a discussion of potential psychological ramifications for the baby, Good Morning America co-host Chris Cuomo said, "[B]iology aside, it is all about love of this child and as long as that's present, everything else is really going to be normal."

Do you agree that the traditional parental model - married man and woman - are inconsequential to a child's well-being as long as there is love?

The new poll question is one O'Reilly asked this week, which I thought was good:

blog buzz.jpgby JivinJ, the latest pro-life chatter...

  • Ross Douhat provides his thoughts on Chief Justice John Roberts and the chance he would vote to overturn Roe.

  • At East of Eden, Ann Marie shares how she became pro-life.

    baby3.jpg

  • Sarah at CEC for Life shares the story and pictures of a toddler (right) whose life she played a role in saving when she worked for Stand True Ministries.

  • Jack Lessenberry, a pro-choice, pro-assisted suicide columnist writes about Jack Kevorkian's plans to run for Congress. The column confirms my notion that Kevorkian has been a crazy old man for quite awhile.

  • Speaking of Kevorkian, Stephen Drake of Not Dead Yet has posted the transcript of a FOX News piece on Kevorkian's run for Congress.

  • Phil Kadner of the Southtown Star discusses efforts at the University of Illinois to help pregnant college students keep their children and stay in school.

  • Butterfly rising: got 99¢?

bluefield2.jpgI wrote earlier this week about the pro-life country song we need to help make a hit.

Butterfly, by the band Bluefield, has a beautiful message that has already saved at least 3 babies' lives.

Butterfly currently ranks in the 60s in the country music charts. It has met with some resistance by stations skittish about its message. I said it would help for you to call stations and request it.

I got this news from Bluefield this afternoon...

No, it's not Halloween, it's an abortion mill

What week would be complete these days without news of the latest abortion mill freak show?

Today's featured mill is the Northern Illinois Women's Center, in Rockford.

I'll have more to say on this chop shop when our side works out the technical glitches with a video they're trying to upload in conjunction with the lawsuit they just filed against the City of Rockford for discrimination and against the mill owners for harrassment, which the video shows.

For now, enjoy these photos of the mill taken by pro-lifers.

Let me introduce the photos by explaining why some of the brick and windows are different. This is a 2-building complex, an old school. I've taken a Google photo to provide context, courtesy of Google maps:

    mill 4.jpg

And now, on with the slide show. Can you imagine any legitimate surgical center or doctor's office looking like this? See the rest on page 2. Click to enlarge...

    Senate Republican strike looms

count2.jpgI wrote a month ago that Senate Republicans, led by Arlen Specter, were threatening a work slowdown if Judiciary Committee chair Patrick Leahy didn't pick up the hearing pace of President Bush's judicial nominees.

According to the Committee for Justice blog, there was a "dramatic showdown" in yesterday's JC hearing:

This morning's dust-up over judges raged for more than 30 minutes and clearly got under Sen. Leahy's skin. The Chairman lurched from being defensive to trying to change the subject, but Specter, the ranking Republican, insisted that all 8 of the GOP senators present be allowed to address the obstruction of Bush's judicial nominees....

    Disability awareness at Fenway Park

Time for a mental health break. Moderator MK just sent me this, a YouTube video of a young man with autism getting the giggles when singing the National Anthem during Disability Day at Fenway Park last summer. How uplifting when the crowd starts to help him out. We all have built within us a desire to help the underdog:

O'Reilly to cover Pfleger and Tiller tonight

UPDATE, 4/4, 6:15a: As thought, O'Reilly bumped the Students for Life/Tiller video last night. Will let you know when it is next scheduled. Am told "soon."

O'Reilly's Talking Points Memo on Fr. Michael Pfleger and his segment on Pfleger follow. View the Fox producer's unedited interview with Pfleger here.

Gotta say Pfleger's friend, Louis Farrakhan, was actually preaching accurately in the clip O'Reilly ran. In it Farrakhan condemned "wicked Jews... false Jews" for spreading filth in America via their Hollywood influence.

We would call them liberal Jews, or perhaps Jews In Name Only. They do not practice the tenets of their faith but instead believe and promote the tenets of liberal ideology. Certainly O'Reilly could have found a clearer example of Farrakhan's anti-Semitism.

But I digress. I do appreciate O'Reilly taking on anti-American racist, and basically crazy hate speech from the pulpit.

    Man-ternity?

pregnant man3.jpgThis morning Oprah's show will be on "The Pregnant Man," which is also how newscasts are portraying her (see right).

Her. In reality, she's a terribly mixed up woman.

Born a beautiful girl named Tracy Beatie, she experienced a traumatic childhood with an absentee father and mother who committed suicide when Tracy was 12. Tracy experienced normal teenage dating years that included a modeling stint and being a Miss Hawaii Teen USA finalist....

14-year-old drowns baby in school toilet

Houston police are certainly being kept busy fielding calls to the scene of 14-year-olds delivering babies, one dead, one killed. From Click2Houston.com, this afternoon:

A 14-year-old gave birth to a baby in a junior high school bathroom and tried to flush the newborn down the toilet, killing the infant....

Mile high abortion, miscarriage, or murder UPDATE

UPDATE, 4/2, 3:50p: I'm moving old updates to page 2. Read the story in chronological order from the airplane graphic, below. Here's the latest, from Click2Houston.com, today:

No charges will be filed in the case of a fetus found in a trash bin on an airplane....

Investigators said the 14-year-old mother was returning from New York with a chaperoned school group.

Police presented the case to the Harris County District Attorney's Office, which declined to charge the girl or the apparent 14-year-old expectant father.

These 2 should be in 8th grade. Will MSM check to see whether these kids' school taught comprehensive sex ed or abstinence ed?

    Expelled from Expelled

I've blogged a couple times over the past 6 months (here and here) about the movie Expelled: No Intelligence Allowed, to be released April 18. View the 7:30 "super trailer" if your interest is picqued by this shorter one:

The premise of Expelled? CNS News, today:

Expelled calls attention to the plight of highly credentialed scholars who have been forced out of prestigious academic positions because they proposed Intelligent Design as a possible alternative to Charles Darwin's 150-year-old theories about the origins of life .

Instead of entertaining a debate on the merits of competing theories, the scientific establishment has moved to suppress the ID movement in a "systematic and ruthless" way at odds with America's founding principles, the film asserts.

Liberals have been going ape about Expelled for months. On March 20, two Darwinian defenders, who were paid to be interviewed for the film but came out looking like buffoons, tried to bust into a private screening in MN....

Breaking News: UCLA student group releases 2nd video exposing Planned Parenthood's racism

Thumbnail image for breaking.jpg5 weeks ago the UCLA student group The Advocate released a blockbuster video exposing Planned Parenthoods in various states accepting bucks specifically to abort black babies.

One of those PPs later issued a statement that acceptance of this $ was a 'serious mistake."

Well here are several more "serious mistakes." Today The Advocate released a 2nd video (in what it called "a series") exposing more PPs of the same Sangeresque genocidal money lust. These videos are so well done. Take a look:

    First IVF twins turn 25

Yesterday MSNBC interviewed the first "test tube" twins born in the US 25 years ago this month, Todd and Heather Tilton, and their mother, Nan:

  • Jay Tea, who describes himself as "squishily pro-choice," has a few thoughts on the numbers in Planned Parenthood's most recent annual report:

... [T]hose numbers mean that Planned Parenthood had about an 11% operating profit. If they weren't a non-profit, that would make them a better investment than the oil companies, whose 9% rate of return was labeled "obscene."

    Butterfly

I spoke in Nashville last week, home of country music.

My good friend Brian Harris, president of TN Right to Life, handed me a cd and told me I needed to listen to it. He remarked as I well knew that pro-life songs we often receive are well-intentioned but lacking. But he said this one, Butterfly, was different.

butterfly2.jpgBrian was right. I am in love with this song. I have been playing it over and over. I think it can change minds and hearts and save lives. Click on the graphic, right, to hear Butterfly.

In fact, the duo singing it, Bluefield, emailed me that 3 different girls have contacted them at their MySpace site to say the song changed their mind.

Bluefield is currently on the road promoting Butterfly, and they have been surprised to meet reticence. They emailed Brian...
