Last week's press conference by black leaders against Planned Parenthood

As an aside, Day Gardner, who you'll see speak in the video below and who is president of National Black Pro-Life Union, will appear tonight on Glenn Beck's t.v. show. He has invited her to discuss the Jeremiah Wright issue, and she's going to try to steer the conversation to Wright's promotion of abortion. Beck can be seen at 7p and 9p EST on Headline News.

"We're here to talk about race, because Planned Parenthood has made abortion about race" ~ great line by Rev. Clenard Childress of BlackGenocide.org at last week's press conference in D.C. by black leaders calling on Congress to defund Planned Parenthood.

Surprisingly, the press conference got lots of good press. Great sign. Here are clips:

I think that's Rev. Clenard Childress? Him I know; never heard of a Clifford Childress.

African American women have way more unplanned pregnancies than other ethnic groups, and more than 70% of all African American children are born to single mothers.

No one is forcing African American women to have abortions. They have abortions 'cause they don't want to be pregnant anymore.

When people blame Planned Parenthood for abortion, it reminds me of the people who sue McDonald's because they've become fat.

wish I could watch but it won't load

NO Laura, they are having abortions because they are pressured by society. And by an organization that deliberately targets minorities because they aren't as well off, mostly being in the lower middle class, if they are lucky.

Posted by: LizFromNebraska at May 1, 2008 7:14 PM

I don't think they're deliberately targeting minorities. I think they are deliberately targeting those in poverty, of which a disproportionate amount of people happen to be persons of color.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
No, the vast majority of African-American babies are born out of wedlock. There is no stigma against single mothers.
Heck, Alveda King wails about the non-existent "black genocide," yet managed to squeeze in two abortions between pregnancies she carried to term.
Nope, African-American women have abortions for the same reasons other women do - they don't wanna be pregnant anymore.
Black women have a higher rate of unwanted pregnancy than white women.
If abortion were illegal, more black women than white women would die from illegal abortions.
Does that mean right-to-lifism is racist?
If abortion were illegal, more black women than white women would die from illegal abortions.
But less black women would die.
Crisis Pregnancy Centers are there to help ALL women facing these unexpected pregnancies - black, white, Asian, and Hispanic, and especially those who are at a disadvantage that are vulnerable. They are there to provide real support AND LOVE.
PP just keeps giving away Birth Control and blocking the view of the ultrasound machine.
Perhaps if we weren't so drenched in an oversexed society, we wouldn't have this mess.
Yup
If anyone really wanted to look at the REASONS why black women have abortions they'd address the issues of poverty and underemployment. Its not like anyone is hanging around the EPT's at the drug store, kidnapping women who buy them, and forcing them to have abortions. And the fact of the matter is - even if antichoicers refuse to acknowledge it - is 97% of the care provided by PP is NOT for abortions. Antichoicers would be happy to keep 97 women from getting the health care they need if they can make it more difficult for 3 women to obtain legal abortions.
Back to the absurd 'sex is bad - sex is only for married people - sex is only for making babies - people wouldnt be having sex if we didnt tell them about it' argument.
Edyt says: "I don't think they're deliberately targeting minorities. I think they are deliberately targeting those in poverty, "
Apparently, Edyt approves of targeting poor people of all colors for abortion.
Very well said, Laura.
I'm just amazed at the amount of what I consider stretching, reaching, semi-hysterical argument about this stuff. Why in the world will a given black women who wants to end a pregnancy be worrying about any of the stuff that the preachers and speakers and pontificators go on and on about? She knows what she wants.
Doyle, is your last name Hargreaves?
Posted by: Doug at May 2, 2008 4:38 PM
Thanks for the video posts: Required viewing for all. I especially like the idea of pressuring congressional candidates who are beneficiaries of Planned Parenthood's largess to return to sender.
Posted by: Jerry at May 2, 2008 8:40 PM
Jerry:8:40: It would be interesting to see if someone could take PP's financial report and draw a diagram or flow chart (that person wouldn't be me, I'd have no clue); a kind of physical representation of PP's money flow (donations, contributions, and the like).
Take your amazement and multiply it by about a billion and then you'll understand how pro-lifers feel.:)
jasper's
quote of the day
Abortion is confounding. Normally, a critical mass of politicians figures out where the middle is and scampers there.
That doesn't happen when it comes to abortion. Most Americans want abortion legal but restricted, and they feel more squeamish about later abortions than earlier ones.
Republicans have picked up on that and therefore focused on late abortions. Democrats, following the cues of the pro-choice activists, have never parried in the most sellable way.
Why don't Democrats hammer this point? Because by emphasizing that Republicans would ban even early-term abortions, Democrats would be implicitly leaving open the possibility that Republicans might be right about late-term abortions.
