The only thing that kept prolifers from responding to Sir Rodericks's violent attack on their display was their patience and fortitude.

Now that they know that they have no civil remedy to such violence on campus, their patience may be severely strained.

Roderick King already found a summer job fitting that fits his skills. Bunnies love him for it.

Statement from the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point

May 14, 2008

The University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point issues the following information in the matter of the Pointers for Life campus display disruption on May 1, 2008.

Roderick King, a student who participated in the removal of several of the crosses that were part of the Pointers for Life display, was cited by UWSP Protective Services and remains subject to the university’s student discipline process. The outcomes of that process may not be publicly disclosed, under protection of the federal Family Educational Rights Privacy Act.

Mr. King was a member of the 2007-08 UWSP Student Senate. On May 1, the Senate’s rules committee voted to suspend Mr. King from his service. On May 8, after a debate involving several speakers, the UWSP Student Senate moved to consider final actions against Mr. King at its first full meeting in September. The UWSP Student Constitution mandates that two public hearings be held before the Senate may vote on punitive measures against senators.

At that May 8 meeting, the Senate adopted a measure to release a statement of the sense of the Senate on the Pointers for Life incident and the actions of Mr. King. That statement was released by the Student Senate and posted on the university Web site on May 14.

Mr. King’s term on the Student Senate expired on May 8. He did not stand for election and, as of May 8, the UWSP administration had been advised that Mr. King, an appointed member, had not applied for reappointment to the Senate. Students may be appointed to fill open seats, subject to a vote by the Senate.

At a subsequent meeting of the Student Senate to swear in its members and leadership for the 2008–09 academic year, Mr. King requested that he be considered for reappointment to the Senate. Senators who had previously spoken out against Mr. King’s continuation on the 2007–08 Student Senate, including the president of Pointers for Life, did not dissent to Mr. King’s reappointment.

The UWSP administration regrets any previous, inaccurate statements about Mr. King’s status on the Student Senate. His term on the 07–08 Senate expired. He was not elected to the 08–09 Senate. The information the administration had received and conveyed, indicating that he had not sought reappointment, was incorrect. Mr. King’s standing as a senator, however, will be subject to Senate action at its first meeting in September.

The university believes that all activities on our campus provide learning opportunities. Our Student Senate is part of a shared governance system that also includes the administration and the Faculty Senate. Our current structure was established in the 1970s under Chancellor Lee Sherman Dreyfus, who went on to serve as the Republican Governor of Wisconsin. The university’s disciplinary process is being applied to the situation that occurred on May 1, as is the Student Senate’s disciplinary process. The timing of the Pointers for Life incident, which occurred at the end of the academic year, and the stipulations of the UWSP Student Constitution will contribute to the pace of a conclusion. However, we do seek to instill in our students the primacy of the rule of law as we prepare them to be excellent and productive American citizens.

Finally, the UWSP administration reaffirms that there is no place on our campus for intolerance. The actions of Mr. King and others, captured on video and now shown around the world, represent an infringement on freedom of expression at a university where all viewpoints are welcome and their expression is encouraged. We believe that this position is shared by our student leadership. We also believe that Mr. King should not have used his status as a senator to justify, in any way, his behavior against the Pointers for Life display

Amanda, I believe we all have a moral right to defend ourselves and our property against senseless violence, by force when necessary. And that is the point you seem determined to ignore, that Sir Roderick was the aggressor, and the U of W administration has now indicated by their inaction that they are giving their tacit approval of, and blessings to his actions.

That situation, if left unresolved, will indeed justify Pointers for Life members to forcefully defend their property against any future violent attacks by the likes of Sir Roderick.

I do NOT consider self-defense and defense of property to be a "wrong". Indeed, I consider it to be a basic RIGHT.

King should be arrested, filed with a hate crime, malicious vandalism, and the FBI called in to investigate. Opps.... I guess that only happens to Pro-Lifers.

I'm not sure how violence, as a means of 'defense of property' fulfills the mandate of loving your enemies. Self-defense of our person is an entirely different matter.

The video is self-condemning for Mr. King. Love is what will win the day, not retaliation, especially if the 'enemy' continues in such blatant illogic.
