"Welcome" to Colleen, a graduate student interning for Students for Life who director Kristan Hawkins is graciously "lending" me a couple of hours a day. Colleen will compose (Prolifer)ations for the summer. JivinJ will still also contribute his valuable posts, but we just need to think of a new name. Suggestions welcome!

On the pro-life blogs...

  • Andrew Smith of the Catholic Pro-Life Committee reports wonderful news: Another late-term Dallas abortion mill is closing! June 28 was its last day to abort. This indeed, in Bishop Farrell's words, is "the best news I've heard all week."

    pp racism.jpg

  • Gabriel at the Culture Campaign links to a LifeNews.com article on the Defund Planned Parenthood protest last Thursday in Washington, DC. Activists gathered at both the Republican and Democratic National Committee headquarters denouncing PP as a racist organization, arguing it deliberately targets black communities. The Washington Times also has a good article.

  • Dawn Eden of The Dawn Patrol and JivinJ link to articles in the Times of London and the Daily Telegraph about doctors in the UK screening embryos for the breast cancer gene. While one "designer embryo" will be born without the breast cancer gene, six siblings were killed because they carried it. The mother and doctors apparently failed to consider, as Dawn writes:

Think about the women you know who have suffered from breast cancer. Would the world be a better place if they never had existed?

    ANNOUNCING

A 527 has been launched and a website is in process to expose Barack Obama and his opposition to the IL Born Alive Infants Protection Act, in other words, his support of infanticide.

lba.gifI am making this public now since many Bill Bennett listeners are checking out this blog after his having publicized it this morning.

If you would like to donate to our 527 now, please make checks out to BornAliveTruth.org and mail them to:

Stanek on Bill Bennett, CNN tomorrow

announcing.gifThe date and time has changed 3x now, but I think tomorrow between 5-6p EST the CNN segment on Barack Obama and the Born Alive issue is finally going to air. This is what CNN interviewed me for last week.

Bill Bennett is appearing live on CNN's The Situation Room tomorrow during that time period and specifically requested that the segment await his ability to rebut and refute however Obama, his people, or CNN downplay Obama's actions against Born Alive. Recall the exchange between Bennett and Obama supporter Donna Brazile last week in which Brazile contended the topic of gas prices was more important than infanticide.

Meanwhile, Bill Bennett will interview me on his radio show tomorrow morning at 8:05a EST about same. Find station listings here.

    weekend question.jpgReported TriCityHerald.com yesterday:

Planned Parenthood of Central Washington's [State] Teen Council spread the word about National HIV Testing Day today to about 250 people in Richland's Howard Amon Park, though the peer education group had to switch locations.

The teens had originally planned to distribute information at Richland's Wal-Mart about free HIV testing that will be at the Kennewick Planned Parenthood clinic Tuesday.

But after threats of a protest by a grass-roots Catholic anti-abortion organization, the American Life League, Wal-Mart requested Thursday that the PP-affiliated council not distribute information at the store....

    CNN: Stanek on Obama

situation room.jpgCarol Costello of CNN contacted me this morning to be interviewed on my experience with Barack Obama and IL's Born Alive Infants Protection Act.

So I just got back from taping a segment at the Chicago CNN studio. I was told it would air during The Situation Room, on now. It hasn't aired yet.

UPDATE, 5:15p: Just talked to Carol, and she didn't get all of her interviews done in time, she said, so they postponed the segment until tomorrow between 5-6p EST.

SECOND UPDATE, 6/27, 5:35p: The segment will again be postponed - until Monday, between 5-6p EST. Bill Bennett was also interviewed for the piece and is scheduled to appear live on The Situation Room Monday. So he asked that the segment be held until then so he can discuss and rebut it after it airs.

Coulter: Abortion/breast cancer link and oil

breast cancer oil.jpgBy Ann Coulter, June 25:

Liberals dismiss studies that show a link between abortion and breast cancer, claiming they are biased because the people promoting the studies are "anti-choice." For the same reason, no one should believe the Democrats' "energy" policies.

Democrats couldn't care less about high gas prices. The consistent policy of the Democratic Party, going back at least to Jimmy Carter, has been to jack up gas prices so we can all start pedaling around on tricycles....

    Who's lying, Scarlett or Barack?

I wrote earlier this month actress Scarlett Johansson told the London Telegraph "she has regular email contact with presidential hopeful Barack Obama in which she offers advice and consoles him after difficult debates." Continued the Telegraph:

The Hollywood starlet said she had been communicating with the Democratic candidate for months and was "amazed" that he always found the time to reply....

"You'd imagine that someone like the senator who is constantly travelling and constantly 'on' - how can he return these personal emails?" she told the Politico website.

    "But he does...."

She described how after a particularly tough debate earlier this year, she sent an email congratulating him for "holding his ground".

He responded that the questioning was "difficult" and he was being pounded on "one silly question after another."

I said at the time young Scarlett had received her last email from Obama, who if what she said was true, had engaged in a politically risky tête-à-tête.

Planned Parenthood subsidy stripped from War Supplemental bill

prostitute food.jpgI've written before (here and here) about the Democrats' attempt to reinstate taxpayer subsidies of college and Planned Parenthood birth control pills in the War Supplemental Appropriations bill.

Recall PP CEO Cecile Richards famously lamented that without this subsidy's restoration, college women would have to choose between sex and food, i.e., buy birth control pills or eat.

Well, I guess now we'll see what their priority is. And maybe they'll get their free-sex partners to kick in a little to support the habit. Or would that make them feel too much like prostitutes?

Americans want to talk gas, not infanticide

Wrote Mark Finkelstein at Newsbusters.org yesterday:

Who cares if Barack Obama won't protect a child who is born alive after an abortion? Gas is over $4/gallon!

So argued Donna Brazile when Bill Bennett pressed her on the matter today. The issue arose during a post-Obama press conference kibitzing session on CNN's Situation Room. Bennett was making the point that the complaisant media in attendance had failed to press the candidate on tough issues.

Abortion: where the politically obvious gets murky

Imagine you are the Karl Rove for your very own Republican candidate. Say you have stumbled upon a position your candidate holds that garners 68%+ support in public opinion polls. The issue polls best among women and young people - often tough nuts for the GOP to crack. New Stanek WND column, "What the media is ignoring about the teen pregnancy pact"

    WND%20logo.gif

Time magazine revealed last week at least eight students at Gloucester High School in MA have entered into a "pact," according to Principal Joseph Sullivan, to get pregnant and raise their babies together....

Sullivan has now gone mum, certainly after school and city lawyers told him to shut up....

    carolyn kirk.jpg

It's no wonder Gloucester Mayor Carolyn Kirk disallowed Sullivan from speaking at her June 23 press conference, telling the world he had gone "foggy in his memory," and there was "no evidence" of a pregnancy pact....

Kirk tried to shift blame for the pregnancies to state and federal government funding reductions "resulting in cuts to programs and services... including support for health education."

Not so fast. Last spring, MA Gov. Deval Patrick rejected $700,000 in free money for abstinence teaching from the federal government. Meanwhile, Patrick approved a budget increase of $800,000 for comprehensive sex ed funding, bringing the total to
    $3.8 million annually....

Had this been a school system that taught abstinence, you'd best believe sex ed would be central to the story.

Had Patrick rejected comprehensive sex ed funding and increased abstinence funding, the New York Times would be pointing it out, not me....

    Not a crocodile fetus?

The technical term for a preborn crocodile is fetus. When born it is called a hatchling. Someone needs to tell AOL to stop the conservative crocodile spin. The following story demonstrates it is trying to humanize crocodiles. Why, look at this article's title: "Baby crocs communicate before hatching." Shameful.

Meanwhile, MSM continues to dehumanize preborn humans by calling them embryos and fetuses. And imagine an MSM article exploring preborn human communication. Ain't gonna happen.

    From AOL, today:

The sounds "umph, umph, umph" might not resonate with you, but for baby crocodiles still in their shells, they are telling mom, "Let us out!"

    crocodile baby.jpg

Biologists have known that shortly before hatching, crocodiles make noises within their eggs. A new study, which involved playbacks of the pre-hatching calls, reveals these calls from the egg tell siblings it's time to hatch and tell moms it's time to uncover the nest....

Reporter Stephanie Simon accompanied her piece with a blog post at WSJ's Front Lines. In it she quoted me from a conversation we had on PP's expansion a couple months ago:

After decades of quiet expansion through a network of small, often somewhat shabby clinics, PP is poised to make a splash.

    wsj pp aurora.jpg

With annual revenues topping $1 billion last year, the nonprofit has gone on a building spree, laying out a network of upscale suburban clinics designed to feed into large regional health centers.

PP's strategy for growth has emboldened its perennial foes in the antiabortion community. Rep. Mike Pence... plans to push legislation this summer to end federal funding of PP. Conservative activists are chiming in, arguing that the group has proved it can do fine without tax dollars.

"They're a magnificent fundraising machine. They really are," said Jill Stanek, an antiabortion blogger. "I would think everyday people on the street would stop and think, "Why are we funding this group?'"...

A front page story by Stephanie Simon in today's Wall Street Journal focused on Planned Parenthood's nationwide expansion strategy:

pp next generation.jpgI've reported on this for awhile (here and here).

The article also spotlighted PP's abortion feeders, its "Expresses":

PP has also opened more than two dozen quick-service "express centers," many in suburban shopping malls. Some sell jewelry, candles, books and T-shirts, along with contraception.

"It is indeed a new look...a new branding, if you will," said Leslie Durgin, a senior vice president at PP of the Rocky Mountains.

Gloucester, "not a story about sex education"? Ha

USA Today questions today whether there was a pregnancy pact at Gloucester High School in MA that resulted in at least 8 of 18 girls all under the age of 16 - likely Freshmen - getting pregnant simultaneously on purpose.

Whether or not there was a pact, which the Time reporter who originally wrote the story stands by, the question remains, as Ray Lamont, editor of the Gloucester Daily Times, told USA Today: "'Pact' or not, these kids thought it would be cool to be moms together. Where did they get that idea?"

The standout line in the article was:

"This is not a story about sex education," says Sarah Brown of the National Campaign to Prevent Teen and Unplanned Pregnancy. "This is a story about a failure to take childbirth seriously. These girls could have had condoms distributed in their living rooms, and they still would have gotten pregnant."

Of course it's not a story about sex education, because only comprehensive sex ed is taught in MA public schools.

The governor last year went so far as to reject federal abstinence funding, which PP of MA gleefully reported:

    pp ma.jpg

Had this been a school system that taught abstinence sex ed only, you'd best believe that point would already be central to the story.

Why is no MSM outlet researching Gloucester's sex ed program? Could it be because PP and the comprehensive sex ed crowd are in the thick of it? Could it be this drama starkly highlights the difference between abstinence and comprehensive sex ed teaching?

Compared to abstinence education, comprehensive sex ed is values free, except perhaps to teach the "value" of how to avoid getting pregnant when having the sex it promotes.

Abstinence education focuses on self- and other-respect. It focuses on goals and dreams that having premature sex can stop. All this was abysmally lacking in the sex ed provided these girls.

    Developing story....

Breaking news: McCain to hit Obama on Born Alive

    Thumbnail image for breaking.jpgFrom Newsmax.com, June 18:

In coming weeks, John McCain is planning to confront Barack Obama on three issues dear to conservatives' hearts.

First is Obama's support of the recent Supreme Court ruling that gives foreign enemy combatants detained at Guantanamo Bay the right to challenge their detention in federal district courts....

Second is Obama's opposition to the Defense of Marriage Act, which says a state is not required to recognize same-sex marriages that are performed in other states. Congress overwhelmingly passed the bill in 1996, and Bill Clinton signed it into law.

Third is Obama's vote in 2002 as an Illinois state senator against a bill to define as a "person" a fully born baby who survived an abortion. The bill was intended to make it clear that if an abortion were botched, an infant born alive would not be killed and would receive medical care. Twice, Obama voted against various versions of the bill and twice voted "present." The Illinois bill did not pass....

The nation's largest abortion-rights group today released a poll of likely women voters in 12 battleground states that suggests... John McCain could lose the support of significant numbers of independent and pro-choice Republican women - if they are educated about the AZ senator's antiabortion voting record.

Ok, underlined are your first clues this article is biased, in fact, just a reworking of the NARAL press release.

    Ovulation caught on film

ovulation 2.jpgCan't believe scientists had such a basic human function as ovulation wrong. Just goes to show science has a lot still to learn about a woman's reproductive cycle. (And if they had this wrong, how much do they not yet know about the birth control pill's mode(s) of action?)

    From Sify News:

A researcher associated with the Catholic University of Louvain in Brussels has accidentally captured the images showing the production of an egg inside a woman's body, something known as 'ovulation' in medical terminology.

Jacques Donnez has revealed that he captured the event while preparing to carry out a partial hysterectomy on a 45-year-old woman.

Observing ovulation in humans is extremely rare, and previous images have been fuzzy.

"The release of the oocyte from the ovary is a crucial event in human reproduction. These pictures are clearly important to better understand the mechanism," New Scientist magazine quoted Donnez as saying.

Most scientists believe that the release of an egg occurs as a sudden, explosive event.

However, Donnez's pictures show it taking place over a period of at least 15 minutes.

The researcher says that shortly before the egg is released, enzymes break down the tissue in the mature follicle, a fluid-filled sac on the surface of the ovary that contains the egg.

He says that this prompts the formation of a reddish protrusion, and after a while a hole appears, from which the egg emerges, surrounded by support cells.

Donnez says that it then enters a Fallopian tube, which carries it to the uterus....

When DMC Pharmacy opens this summer... in Chantilly [VA], the shelves will be stocked with allergy remedies, pain relievers, antiseptic ointments and almost everything else sold in any drugstore. But anyone who wants condoms, birth control pills or the Plan B emergency contraceptive will be turned away.

That's because the drugstore... will be a "pro-life pharmacy" - meaning, among other things, that it will eschew all contraceptives.

    pro-life pharmacies.jpg

The pharmacy is one of a small but growing number of drugstores around the country that have become the latest front in a conflict pitting patients' rights against those of health-care workers who assert a "right of conscience" to refuse to provide care or products that they find objectionable....

Obama: "Responsibility does not end at conception"

obama church.jpgYesterday at the Apostolic Church of God in Chicago, Barack Obama gave a good Father's Day speech on the responsibility of black men to be good fathers.

Obama once again uttered the strange line, "We need fathers to realize that responsibility does not end at conception."

When does Obama think that responsibility begins? Is he saying there's a problem in the black community where 70% of men think they are responsible to impregnate women, but hang on, there's more to it?...

Mother locked up for 18 years for illegitimate pregnancy

italy.jpgWhat a tragic story. Clearly this poor mother's captors are deranged. This is about more than an out-of-wedlock pregnancy. From the Associated Press, June 14:

An Italian woman whose family kept her locked in a room for almost two decades after she was accused of becoming pregnant out of wedlock has been freed by police, authorities and media reports said.

Police said they found the 47-year-old woman Friday in a filthy room in the family's home near Naples.

Billboard welcomes Obama to Flint today

Just a few minutes ago doors opened to the Kettering University auditorium in Flint, MI, where Barack Obama is scheduled to give a speech at 11:45a EST on jobs and the economy.

Little did Flint Right to Life and Black Americans for Life know when they co-sponsored this billboard in front of the college awhile back that it might be read by such a prominent promoter of black genocide:

Orlando Sentinel: wrong on Terri Schiavo but too bad

orland sentinel logo.pngOn May 24 the Orlando Sentinel published a story describing Terri Schiavo as "brain dead," even worse than the oft-cited yet wrong "persistent vegetative state" MSM more often attributes to her. Brain dead is what one is at organ harvest time, kept alive only by machines.

After repeated attempts to contact OS by phone and email, Terri's brother Bobby Schindler finally got through to a Mr. Dana Eagles, informing him OS's depiction of Terri was "patently false."

He directed Eagles to the press release the family recently issued reexplaining for the millionth time Terri's correct diagnosis, "disabled" or "brain-damaged." Bobby even offered to send Eagles Terri's medical documents indicating not even doctors paid by Terri's husband Michael ever diagnosed Terri as "brain dead."

The next day came this email to Bobby...

phill kline 7.jpgPro-abort groups and individuals from around the country are expected to pour money into the primary and general election races against KS Johnson Co. District Attorney Phill Kline.

Kline is the only DA in the U.S. prosecuting Planned Parenthood, and likely the only DA in the U.S. with the intestinal fortitude to do so. Anyone keeping even minimal track of his progress knows the fight is not only uphill but personal. Unwarranted vicious attacks against Kline by MSM et al for merely trying to enforce KS law show serious his criminal investigation has become. For instance, read this June 10 DailyKos hit piece.

EMILY's List has learned to laugh

The pro-abortion women's PAC EMILY's List has learned through experience how to put on a happy face in the aftermath of huge losses.

In 2002 17 of EMILY's 21 endorsed candidates lost in the national election.

In 2004 10 of EMILY's 13 endorsed candidates lost in the national election.

In 2006 16 of EMILY's 18 endorsed candidates lost in the national election.

Now, the group's leadership has apparently gone hysterical after seeing its hard-fought presidential candidate Hillary Clinton lose to Barack Obama. Reported the Washington Independent on June 11:

Ellen Moran began to laugh. This wasn't a snicker or a snort, but a full-throttled laugh that caused Moran to jerk her head back toward the ceiling as she contemplated the question before her. It was the early afternoon of June 6 and the 42-year-old executive director of EMILY's List had just been asked whether she believed if the political group could have done anything differently during the presidential run of Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton, in which the political group played an integral part....

Woman gets 1 year for illegally signing to abort grandchild

Good for the judge for giving the maximum sentence. Bad that the maximum sentence for illegally giving permission to kill a preborn is only 1 year. From the Atlanta Journal Constitution, today:

A Hall County woman is serving a year in jail for pretending to be a girl's mother when she signed off on the girl's abortion.

In reality, Cindi Cook was the mother of the girl's boyfriend, who also was 16 when she became pregnant in early 2007.

    cindy cook.jpg

Displeased that the baby would ruin her son's chance of going to college, Cook, 44, pressured the 16-year-old girl to have the abortion in the spring of 2007, found a clinic that would do it without her present, and paid for the procedure....

Last week, a judge sentenced Cook to a year in jail - the maximum for a misdemeanor - for interfering with custody and violating a parental notification law....

James said his office is now investigating whether the facility - Northside Women's Clinic in Chamblee - broke a state law that required parental notification when a girl under the age of 18 has an abortion....

    Obama's pastoral alliance

Yesterday, Barack Obama met with church leaders - in the Chicago highrise office building where my husband works, incidentally - to perhaps discuss the wonderment that lightning doesn't strike whenever he invokes the name of Christ in the same breath he condones abortion.

Ok, I doubt that but do admire his chutzpah for continually taking the risk. According to the Associated Press:

As one clergyman put it, when Barack Obama met with Christian leaders in Chicago today, the discussion "went absolutely everywhere."

The presumed Democratic presidential nominee met privately with the group [of ~30], which included conservatives, and discussed Darfur, the Iraq war, gay rights and abortion.

    t. d. jakes.jpg

Bishop T.D. Jakes, who heads a Dallas megachurch, tells the AP that Obama discussed his "personal journey of faith." And he says some of the participants clearly have political differences with Obama. Jakes, who does not endorse candidates, says he would also like to meet with John McCain.

Obama's campaign says the event included "prominent evangelicals and other faith leaders" and there will be more such meetings in the months to come....

K-Mart selling but running from abstinence?

I'm not crazy for signage on any girl's butt. If my daughter were still the age to be attracted to backside messaging, I'd nix the purchase. It draws the young male eye to the wrong place.

But if a teen queen insists on wearing such advertisement I'd rather it be something along the lines of, "Look but don't touch." Even that is a bit dichotomous, attracting a young voyeur to a hot spot only to tell him to go away.

It marks the 43rd anniversary of the Supreme Court's Griswold vs. Connecticut decision that freed Planned Parenthood exec Estelle Griswold to peddle birth control pills legally she had been peddling illegally. And the rest is history. We can certainly look back over the past 4 decades and see the number of "unwanted" children conceived has dropped, right?

Since that time the contraception/abortion industry has engaged in a cover-up to keep women ignorant about the fact the bc pill may abort 5- to 9-day old preborn children by making the uterus impermeable to their attachment.

    ec uh oh.jpg

The FDA label says the same thing about emergency contraception and recent study after recent study is showing how unlikely it is that EC has a post-conception effect.

Update on Senate shutdown over Dem broken promises on judges

I've written for a long time about Senate Democrats obstructing confirmation of President Bush's circuit court nominees.

In fact, one would have to go back to 1848 to match their pace. During the last 2 years of Clinton's reign, 15 nominees were confirmed by a Republican-controlled Senate. During Bush's last 2 years, 8 nominees have so far been confirmed. The typical average is 17.

I've written for months that Republicans were becoming increasingly exasperated with Democrat stall tactics, obviously to keep as many spots open as possible pending the hopeful election of a Democrat president, despite the fact some are now considered "emergency vacancies."

reid mcconnell 5.jpgOn May 22, as the Memorial Day deadline approached when Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid had promised 3 confirmations and only produced 1, Republicans rattled their sabres louder.

So it should have come as no surprise when on June 4, Republican Minority Leader Mitch McConnell used a parliamentary procedure to shut down the Senate to force movement from the Dems on judges. He demanded a 491-page bill be read in full, his prerogative....

Congress has interrogated banking, energy, tobacco, and oil execs-treating them like serial killers before the cameras. When will they go after a corrupt industry that has real blood on its hands?

Harriet Christian's outburst followed its decision to allow disobedient FL and MI only half-votes, a big nail in Hillary's nomination coffin. steyn.jpgFrom Mark Steyn, who I've decided I have a crush on, an excerpt from his column, Sexism, not Obama, beat Hillary, May 31:

Sex-selective abortion is a fact of life in India, where the gender ratio has declined to 1,000 boys to 900 girls nationally, and as low as 1,000 boys to 300 girls in some Punjabi cities.

In China, the state-enforced "one child" policy has brought about the most gender-distorted demographic cohort in global history, the so-called guang gun - "bare branches." If you can only have one kid, parents choose to abort girls and wait for a boy, to the point where in the first generation to grow to adulthood under this policy there are 119 boys for every 100 girls. In practice, a "woman's right to choose" turns out to mean the right to choose not to have any women.

And what of the Western world?...

    Welcome new crew members

announcing.gifThanks to all you readers who are contributing to the continued growth of JillStanek.com. Last month saw another record set of 94,000 unique visitors and 4.3 million hits. We've seen traffic increase by 1/3 just since January, when there were 60,000 visitors.

Because of this, the site software experiences panic attacks every now and then, like last week.

In an effort to keep our wonderful moderators from experiencing similar panic attacks, we're adding to the Mod Squad, as they're affectionately known.

Thanks to Bobby Bambino, Carder, Carla, and Chris Arsenault for agreeing to help moderate this motley crew!...

    "Madonna and child"

madonna and child.jpgClever title AOL gave this news story.

Most of singer Madonna's music and performances disturb me, which is I'm sure part of her plan. But there are a couple things I admire about Madonna, her personal discipline and her willingness to adopt an African baby as well as fund African orphanages and make a documentary spotlighting the plight of poor African children.

Some say the adoption was a publicity stunt. If so, it was a life-altering one. From the Associated Press, May 28...

    Weekend question

weekend question.jpgAccording to People magazine, May 30:

Angelina Jolie, who is expecting twins this summer, says being pregnant makes her feel womanly and sexy.

"It makes me feel that all the things about my body are suddenly there for a reason," she says in the July issue of Vanity Fair. "It makes you feel round and supple, and to have a little life inside you is amazing."

vanity angelina.jpgPlus, the actress says that her partner, Brad Pitt, "finds pregnancy very sexy. So that makes me feel very sexy."

The 32-year-old - already mom to Maddox, 6; Pax, 4; Zahara, 3; and Shiloh, 2, - also says she is awed by what the human body can do.

When giving birth to daughter Shiloh, "I had a C-section and I found it fascinating. I didn't find it a sacrifice and I didn't find it a painful experience," she tells the magazine.

"I found it a fascinating miracle of what a body can do."

Do you agree pregnancy makes a woman "womanly and sexy"?
