EMILY's List has learned to laugh

The pro-abortion women's PAC EMILY's List has learned through experience how to put on a happy face in the aftermath of huge losses.

In 2002 17 of EMILY's 21 endorsed candidates lost in the national election.

In 2004 10 of EMILY's 13 endorsed candidates lost in the national election.

In 2006 16 of EMILY's 18 endorsed candidates lost in the national election.

Now, the group's leadership has apparently gone hysterical after seeing its hard-fought presidential candidate Hillary Clinton lose to Barack Obama. Reported the Washington Independent on June 11:

Ellen Moran began to laugh. This wasn't a snicker or a snort, but a full-throttled laugh that caused Moran to jerk her head back toward the ceiling as she contemplated the question before her. It was the early afternoon of June 6 and the 42-year-old executive director of EMILY's List had just been asked whether she believed if the political group could have done anything differently during the presidential run of Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton, in which the political group played an integral part....

Now, a day before Clinton announced the official suspension of her campaign for the Democratic presidential nomination, Moran and the office were in the aftermath, wondering what would come next and what Clinton's failed candidacy meant for the future of their organization....

Most prominent among the group was its founder and president Ellen Malcolm, who became a kind of super-surrogate for Clinton, to the ire of some in the Democratic Party, who said her efforts were divisive. Before a debate in Iowa in December, Malcolm held a news conference in which she said that while she recognized Obama as being pro-choice, he had not been fervent enough in defending the cause in either the U.S. Senate or the Illinois State legislature.

Near the end of the campaign, when another group devoted to abortion rights, NARAL Pro-Choice America, came out to endorse Obama, Malcolm lashed back, calling NARAL ''tremendously disrespectful'' by not giving Clinton ''the courtesy to finish the final three weeks of the primary process.''...

Moran said. "I'm optimistic that many of these women we've helped elect and have yet to elect can emerge and be ready. Again, 10 years ago where was Barack Obama? He was just finishing up his freshman term in the legislature. Helllllllllloooooooooooooo! That is profound."

Wow, women scorned.

But, hey, there's more good news. EMILY's List has decided to endorse Obama.

Before you get filled with too much glee about the possibility of the Emily's List losing streak extending to Obama, remember that correlation does not equal causality. The EL candidates lost not because of EL support, but because EL supported liberal women running in conservative districts, who were long shots to begin with. In fact, it is possible that the few EL winners might have lost without EL support.

In the tidal wave of Obama's candidacy, the EL support will be a fairly inconsequential drop in the bucket. Besides, who else were they going to endorse, John McSame?

I love the McLabels we've been giving John. Every time I see someone with a different one, I smile and think of fries.

My prediction: the people at EMILY's List will be very happy with the outcome of the upcoming national election.

Uh, SOMG,

You also predicted President Hillary Clinton would be signing the Freedom of Choice Act.

Doug,

What a hoot!

Posted by: Mary at June 12, 2008 2:03 PM

Mary, you're right, my predictions are not always right.

Where was Hillary 10 years ago for that matter? But thanks for highlighting Obama's lack of experience, Emily's List.

If you are looking for the pro-life equivalent of Emily's List check out the Susan B. Anthony List. They, on the other hand, win most of their races.

Doug:1:45: That picture of Hillary is awful! She looks 80 years old!

Janet,

Bill doesn't exactly look like a spring chicken either!

”I think it's going to actually help our movement right now. I think it's going to help unite everybody and bring people back to the fold, get people reinvigorated. I feel like the past eight years, everybody thought, since we have a pro-life president, we don't have to do that much. He's looking out for us; don't worry about it. I think it's going to get people back into the fold, being vigilant, watching what's happening in Washington".
