Jill Stanek: "total nutbag... crazy racist"

slide 1 feministe.JPG

Jill at Feministe took a swipe at me June 17 for my post, "Obama: 'Responsibility doesn't end at conception.'"

According to Jill I am a "nutbag... total nutbag... [and] crazy racist," and she filed her piece under the tags "A**holes, Crazy Conservatives... Racism... [and] Stupidity."...

About Obama's strange line in a Father's Day speech this past Sunday, "We need fathers to realize that responsibility does not end at conception," I wrote...

Obama admitted once again that conception launches fatherhood. One cannot be a father without a child. Hence, childhood commences at conception.

... to which Jill responded:

Something tells me that Stanek failed Logical Reasoning 101.

single family.gifI also wrote that Obama failed to mention how to prevent absentee fathers, single mothers, and illegitimate children:

Men can avoid being absentee fathers and women can avoid being single mothers if both will respect themselves and each other enough not to have sex like animals, driven purely by sexual urges. Obama neglected to mention that.

... to which Jill responded:

Silly Obama. Why in the world would he not mention that black people should just stop having sex like animals - apparently a big problem in "black culture"?

All this was standard liberal fare sans debate that I'm used to and typically ignore. But the responses to Jill's piece by some of her readers surprised me. Tekanji commented:

I agree that what Stanek said was both ridiculous and vile, but the sheer number of times you casually threw around ableist slurs like "crazy" and "nutbag" really doesn't sit right with me. Whether or not Stanek actually has a mental illness, it's still not cool to use slurs degrading people with mental illnesses to attack her. I would recommend reading the quotes and visiting the links in this post: Yes, it is offensive to the targeted group

tql wrote:

...i think you are reaching. her statement wasn't racist. a bit over the top to use the f***ing like animals imagery, yes. but, i think she was using that illustration generally speaking.

is it problematic for children growing up without a consistent presence of a father in their life a problem in the black community? yes...

is a way to avoid that problem to think about who you have sex with, and perhaps do it in either the context of a loving, mutually supportive, relationship - preferably marriage? yes...

so, what exaclty is the problem?

Emma wrote:

Just because you don't like her... you've literally PULLED a meaning out of her statement, that I pretty much have to be searching for to find. Her simple point was, a lot of people are careless and have sex indiscriminately and wildly. I REALLY doubt she was calling black people animals. I've heard that phrase used tons of times, and in reference to both black AND whites....

I think you sometimes need to be a bit more objective in the way you report stories. All i could read here was an angry person tearing down what was actually a sensible statement.

(Indeed, I am an equal opportunity user of that phraseology, for instance here.)

And Raving Atheist added:

... Stanek's conclusion follows perfectly from the premise previously announced by Obama: "We need fathers to realize that responsibility does not end at conception." If a man is a father at the time of conception, then the product of conception is a child.

slide 2 raving.JPG

You may, of course, disagree with employing the word "father" to refer to the man responsible for pregnancy.... But Stanek was merely pointing out that Obama does use the word "father" to describe the relationship between the impregnator and the fetus.

There is nothing remotely racist with Stanek's post. Obama identified what he perceives as a problem in the African-American community, and Stanek faulted him for not suggesting pre-marital abstinence as a solution. Her use of the phrase "sex like animals" refered to premarital sex generally, not sex as practiced by African-Americans.

But if you are going to fault Stanek, you should fault Obama as well. He said "They have abandoned their responsibilities, acting like boys instead of men", thus refering to black men as "boys." He also said that those who "commit crime" are a problem in the African-American community, thus implying that "blacks are criminals." At least one commentator has noted that Obama's speech represented a "right turn" aimed at winning the general election by demonizing black men. Why did he single out any community at all, when he could have just limited his criticism to the class consisting of irresponsible fathers?

I am heartened by the maturity displayed by people who may disagree with my position but are willing and able to discuss it. I am also heartened by the self-policing.

See Jill, we aren't all insane :p

P.S.

Obama just rejected public financing, don't know what McCain is doing, but I'm sure that'll be some sort of upcoming news bit.

Jill,

I am not sure why you consider having your writing categorized as "ridiculous and vile" as a compliment.

I am also not sure why you value the endorsement of the "Raving Athiest" (your link goes to September, 2007, by the way).

I guess you have to seek approval wherever you can get it.

Posted by: Bystander at June 19, 2008 12:17 PM

Oh gosh, look, Bystander left a comment that didnt include calling Jill a racist. :gasp: I'm shocked. It's pretty hard to refute when even people on your side, Bystander, say she's not a racist.

Jill, I was directed to your blog by a friend this week, and I just wanted to say that your story is amazing. I have browsed through many of your archives, and I just thank God for your voice i n the pro-life movement. God bless!

Elizabeth 12:31

I do not know who any of the commentators are, so I don't know, or care, whether they are on "my side". Nor do I necessarily agree with any of the comments they made.

Your posting is very ironic, in view of you (assuming you are the same Elizabeth) repeatedly asking Jill about the racist nature of her comments in the classic "Father Pfleger's Black Heart" of March 5, 2008. You brought it up at least 5 times, and were totally ignored by Jill.

Apparently that did not affect your loyalty.

Nearly all of Jill's daily "Obama hate-o-rama" postings have a significantly racist character, which I have and will continue to point out.

Every single-issue anti-choice extremist will vote for McCain, so I see no need for them to engage in racist smears of Obama.

I have suggested discussion of presidential politics stick to the multiple important issues, and vast divide in positions between McCain and Obama, and that racist, silly stuff like the non-existent "I hate Whitey tape" has no place in a discussion among rational people.

Call me crazy, even if that is politically incorrect. :)

Posted by: Bystander at June 19, 2008 1:40 PM

ha, when you're called 'rediculous and vile' by anyone on feministe, it is truly a compliment.

bystander, are you saying we shouldn't value the endorsement or defense of someone who doesn't believe in God? To me, that simply means we are using not only faith but also reason.

and thats a good thing...

She wasn't ignored by Jill, Bystander. Jill responded to the many false accusations that she was racist at 3:33 on that thread. Stop making things up.

Hi Lerin,
Welcome!!

"...single-issue anti-choice extremist..."
-----------------------------------

hmmm...the abortion/ life issue may be a single one BUT is the most important and fundamental one. When you cry out against war, healthcare, environment, the poor..etc and etc...you're really stating that people's lives are important enough that we must address these issues to alleviate the suffering.

And the most basic issue against life that we, as a nation, are facing is that of abortion.

Posted by: RSD at June 19, 2008 1:57 PM

Bethany 1:53

Jill's statement in Pfleger's Black Heart 3/5/08 at 3:33 that anyone who disagreed with her was "thick-headed" did not satisfy Elizabeth, who asked her to explain her comments at 3:56,4:00 4:03 and 4:13. Jess, Sally and several others also pointed out several other instances of racist statments by Jill, and Jill never responded after 3:33.

Anyone can go to that post in the Archives and decide who is "making things up".

Posted by: Bystander at June 19, 2008 2:27 PM

Well, of course, Jill. You're a white person who had the temerity to disagree in public with something a black person said. You simply MUST be racist! [eyeroll]

Posted by: bmmg39 at June 19, 2008 2:39 PM

Bystander, there were no racist quotes. Only assumptions. Why the desperate need to paint Jill as a racist, Bystander? You still haven't explained to me why Obama isn't a racist for the things I brought up the other day.

Posted by: Bethany at June 19, 2008 3:48 PM

Hey Bystander, why is Obama not a racist for saying this:

"The point I was making was not that my grandmother harbors any racial animosity. She doesn't. But she is a typical white person who, uh, if she sees somebody on the street that she doesn't know there's a reaction that's been been bred into our experiences that don't go away and that sometimes come out in the wrong way and that's just the nature of race in our society. We have to break through it..." - Senator Barack Obama"

But Jill is somehow racist for saying this:

"Men can avoid being absentee fathers and women can avoid being single mothers if both will respect themselves and each other enough not to have sex like animals, driven purely by sexual urges. Obama neglected to mention that."

Posted by: Bethany at June 19, 2008 3:53 PM

Bethany,

If you can't see the difference in the statements, I certainly can't explain it to you.

I'm sure Jill is capable of explaining why there is a persistent racist tone in her writings, if she wishes to do so. She has never responded.

I'll make you a deal. If Jill can go a week without publishing another racist smear against Obama, I'll go a week without calling her a racist. I'm not holding my breath...

Posted by: Bystander at June 19, 2008 4:07 PM

Totally off topic,

but this is why I hope everyone takes ANYTHING they read in the media, whether it supports their agenda or not, with a grain of salt.

The floods in the midwest have destroyed hundreds of homes, who knows how many beloved family pets have drowned, lives lost, people out of work...etc...

and yet... what is the LA Times covering?

DRUMROLL....

The fact that an Olympic gymnast had to leave her practice space because it had a foot of water in it (are you all crying over this? I hope so!).

But oh it gets better, the gymnast actually SAYS she is uncomfortable being covered for this story while the flooding has obviously caused FAR more hardship for others. But does the media care?

NOPE. They reported on it anyway. Awesome.

http://www.latimes.com/sports/olympics/la-sp-gym19-2008jun19,0,4873863.story

Ooooh - someone just walked by my window with a paisely scarf. I'm going to tell Michele Malkin and get THIS on the news too!! Because its not about sensationalism or anything! Its REAL NEWS!

*headdesk*

If you can't see the difference in the statements, I certainly can't explain it to you.

Oh no, Bystander. I absolutely see the difference in those statements. My question is, do you?

Posted by: Bethany at June 19, 2008 4:17 PM

I'll make you a deal. If Jill can go a week without publishing another racist smear against Obama, I'll go a week without calling her a racist. I'm not holding my breath...

I'll make you a deal, Bystander. Show me one genuine instance of racism from Jill towards Obama and I'll go along with your deal.

All of Jill's accusations against Obama have been purely based on his actions (sometimes his very racist actions), not his race or heritage.

Posted by: Bethany at June 19, 2008 4:20 PM

Bystander: "Bethany, If you can't see the difference in the statements, I certainly can't explain it to you."

Don't bother, I can see it. I can see that Obama's statement was much more racist than Jill's statement. Do I win anything? 8-O

::Takes a nice long drag off of his cigarette:: I can't believe I'm doing this... I'm getting soft in my old age... I've gotta go kick a puppy or something before I start picturing flowers and unicorns in my brain...

Jill, relish this moment, because it will literally be a once in a lifetime thing...

Jill, you are many things that I don't like. It is common knowledge to many people who post here that you and I have bad blood between us. Hell, MK was the one who made sure I played nice last August when I really just wanted to verbally tear you a new one. However, out of all the things that you do that make me want to strangle myself with an extension cord, I cannot brand you as a racist bigot. Religious zealot? Yes. Racist bigot? No. I've followed your site since you banned me from posting here, and out of all the things you say or do, I can't find anything blatantly racist about your comments. I could easily twist a lot of your words into being something racist, but that would be lying, and we can't have that now, can we?

Ok, there. I did the impossible and DEFENDED JILL STANEK!

I feel kinda dirty...

I need a shower.....

Posted by: Skinhead Dan at June 19, 2008 5:47 PM

"If you can't see the difference in the statements, I certainly can't explain it to you."

Sure we can see the difference. Sen. Obama's comment stereotyped white people, and therefore contained racism; Jill's comment dealt with people in general, and therefore wasn't racist at all.

There.

Posted by: bmmg39 at June 19, 2008 5:56 PM

Yeah Danny!

Posted by: mk at June 19, 2008 6:42 PM

I can see both sides of this.

On one hand, Jill was talking about black people and animals in very close proximity - close enough that one could draw the conclusion that she was calling black people animals for having sex.

On the other hand, I think she thinks everyone who has sex outside of marriage is behaving like animals, so I don't think she meant it to be racist. She meant it to be rude. As usual.

Posted by: Edyt at June 19, 2008 7:45 PM

Bystander,

My loyalty as what? A commenter and reader? No, not really. But if you've kept up with any of these threads, you can plainly see that I don't subscribe to EVERY attitude Jill has about issues on this blog and have said so. Everybody here knows that I'm not a blind follower (Not that people who agree with Jill are) and that I have voiced my opposing viewpoints on several issues here.

Posted by: Elizabeth (Gabriella's Momma) at June 19, 2008 7:57 PM

These days, one is branded a "racist" for demanding more of anyone who does not have white skin (or Asian heritage). When 86% of African-American babies that are born are conceived out of wedlock, which is associated with a tremendous number of problems for children (everything from decreased chance of graduating from high school to an increased chance of living in poverty), we - as people who care about the black community, because we care about the human race - ought to find ways to reverse this trend. While it would be helpful for men to take responsibility for their children by providing for them, that is the second-best solution. (Note that, although African-Americans have an abortion rate that is significantly higher than their white counterparts, they are also much more likely to have children out of wedlock. Another example of how abortion is correlated with just the harm that it purports to ameliorate.)

If Jill were really racist - if she really believed in the inferiourity of African-Americans - if she really wanted them to live in poverty, to not finish school, to be segregated - she would not encourage them to be abstinent, to wait for marriage, and to build strong families. She would be silent about the root cause of the crisis in the black community. If she thought that blacks lacked self-control, she would promote abstinence only for whites.

You don't see her doing that... probably because she's not racist.

Posted by: theobromophile at June 19, 2008 10:00 PM

How quickly we forget. Please see June 4th. read how Jill was willing to spread what has so far proven to be a false rumor (doesn't that rule book of yours have a rather specific injunction against that sort of thing?) including adding photos and commentary to further the notion that Michelle Obama had used racist language in a public speech.

Driving the divisive wedge, while not racist in the classic sense, is still racist in a fan the flames/instigating way.

Posted by: phylosopher at June 20, 2008 12:24 AM

Phylosopher,

Do you even know what racist means?

Posted by: mk at June 20, 2008 4:30 AM

I'm sorry but I (an African-American) find this terribly offensive they call you Jill a racist but they refuse to call Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson on their BS? That. Makes. No. Sense. And don't feel bad Jill I'm black and I tell black women and men to stop having sex like animals too and in turn I'm called all sorts of names and people say I hate being black or something of the matter.

you know these liberals think that just because they agree with Al and Jesse that they're not racist at all but it sorta does...Let me explain, Al, Jesse, and Obama support laws that would hurt many blacks and further hurt our community such as homosexuality, abortion, gun laws, the list goes on and on and white liberals support them. So who's really the racist?

P.S. I hate it when liberals throw around the word like racist without any proof don't they know that they are degrading the word?!?

P.P.S, and um yeah last time I checked white feminists have got a lot of nerve to call you racist Jill, didn't they piggyback off the civil rights movement and not to mention it was their democratic party that supported slavery, the KKK, Jim crow, voted against the civil right, etc? who are these people foolin'?

Posted by: Adlyn at June 20, 2008 10:35 AM

Jill - When you say that black people "have sex like animals" you have to know the history of remarks like that. The equating of African Americans to animals is straight out of the Jim Crow racism talking points. A good writer has a command of the language and a sense of context and history. When you made remarks such that you did, you in that moment demonstrated a lack of such senses. When you took to your blog to decry being called out for such language then you dug yourself a bit deeper.
