CBS: "New Yorker Obama cover sparks uproar"

The Los Angeles Times already considers it one of "10 magazine covers that shook the world."

Don't know about that, but the July 21 New Yorker magazine cover is certainly the talk of the town today, along with over 1k news stories.

Obviously satirical, it features a cariacture of Barack Obama dressed as a Muslim with Michelle dressed in military garb carrying an AK-47. In the background is a photo of Osama bin Laden with an American flag burning in the fireplace.

Most are wound just a little too tight about the cover. Only Clarence Page of the Chicago Tribune put it in context as "quite within the normal realms of journalism... just lampooning all the crazy ignorance out there," as quoted by CBS....

I say the only thing missing in the cartoon is a dismembered baby in one corner and a dying preemie in another.

Only that wouldn't be satire.

Comments:

You are exactly the type of person that is being lampooned Jill.

Sorry, Sally, but abortion is nowhere to be seen on that cover. As I said, that wouldn't be satirical.

This cartoon is an pathetic attempt by liberal elitists from Manhattan (The New Yorker) in trying to make conservatives look bad.

......................................

Jasper, being politically conservative doesn't mean that the only web sites you read, or copy and paste from, are labeled such. It means that you understand the country's issues and agree with conservative concepts of how they should be handled.
Could you define what those conservative concepts are for yourself and how you came to those concepts?

That cover was bad for liberals and conservatives alike.

This is nothing compated to the video that will be coming out at "just the right time".

I completely disagree. The artwork is amazing. This is the most honest political espression of art I have seen in a long long time.

Your right Jill. Instead of the gun Michelle Obama should have a Metzenbaum scissors in one hand and a wad of cash in the other. Oh yeah, then it wouldn't be satire

HisMan, which video? The one of Obama at junior college stoned out of his mind hitting a crack pipe?

Obama told the teacher's union today they are doing a great job and he supports their union 100% in contract negotiations...while the US children continue to be outperformed by students in other countries. McCain on the other hand wants to be able to reward teachers based upon the performance of the children they teach. Hmmm.... Obam is pandering and McCain actually cares about the kids.

"Could you define what those conservative concepts are for yourself and how you came to those concepts?"

Sally,

There was a joke about a conservative and a liberal walking down the street and coming upon a homeless man. The conservative hands him his business card invites him to come into his office to talk about a job, then he hands him twenty dollars. The liberal, not wanting to be outdone, points the man to the nearest welfare office and then hands him fifty dollars from the conservative's pocket.

... I got those concepts from my Dad. Just like you got yours from your Dad.

Sally, 9:23p: Personal attack removed.

I think the New Yorker has unintentionally struck a nerve..... related to deep seated suspicions many Americans have about Senator Obama.

Posted by: Doyle at July 15, 2008 6:49 AM

It's not suspicions about Obama. It's the dawning realization that there are a lot of folks out there who are too stupid to get the joke, too stupid to realize that it's not Obama, but they, themselves, who are being satirized.

Doyle,
The greatest suspicion we have of Obama is how as he campaigns he morphs into whatever gets him votes and that he will continue to morph and pander to special interests to an exorbitant degree; with our tax dolars. We don't want a panderer as Commander and Chief of our country.

Posted by: truthseeker at July 15, 2008 10:28 AM

I can't divulge, however, it will defeat him.

Posted by: HisMan at July 15, 2008 10:29 AM

Oh HisMan, keep hope alive!

Posted by: Hal at July 15, 2008 11:35 AM

HisMan obviously has the "I hate Whitey" tape.

Posted by: LTL at July 15, 2008 12:23 PM

It will take more than that to defeat Obama.

Where are the comments from the 10,000 Catholics for Obama?

.......Indeed, abortion is a grave moral issue of monumental importance, but we believe it cannot be separated from a holistic approach in which every human life is respected and dignified. ......Inspired by this vision and Senator Obama's leadership, in April 2008, we launched a Facebook group, Catholics for Obama United, to help network Catholics and other peoples of faith supporting Senator Obama. The interest overwhelmed us. In under two weeks, 500 people had joined the group and expressed their willingness to volunteer. This site is our attempt to build on that energy and grow this movement to 10,000 and beyond ......
