Catholic vote 2008

The past few days many have sent me a link to the following video adding, "This is very powerful." Today when yet another friend send me a link to the video, writing, "This is very powerful," I finally took a look at it.

And you know what? It really is very powerful.

Eduardo's video on abortion and Obama

Popular and Influential Latino actor Eduardo Verastegui, in conjunction with Catholic News Agency, has produced an excellent video in Spanish, "Dura Realidad," i.e., "Hard Truth."

With English subtitles, Eduardo explains how abortion hurts the Hispanic population (in fact, a target) and family and how Barack Obama radically supports abortion beyond most of the public's sensibilities. Eduardo mentions Obama's opposition to the Born Alive Infants Protection Act.

The unedited video also includes graphic footage of real abortions. As Eduardo states, "We all instinctively know that abortion is something intrinsically evil, and if it is something so terrible that we can't even see it, shouldn't we perhaps not tolerate it either?"

I'm not surprised YouTube pulled the unedited version. YouTube has been removing graphic abortion videos for some time. I am surprised and saddened GodTube pulled it, though. I wonder whose side GodTube thinks it is on. Who wins by not showing the reality of abortion? GodTube is not unlike the Christians in Germany during the Holocaust, trying to look the other way.

Here is the edited version of Eduardo's video still up on YouTube. View the unedited version here.

  • The Los Angeles Times has a long article about abortion in Russia. Here's a classic quote from the story:

"The spiritual position," said Natalia Karpovich, a leader of the State Duma committee focused on family, women and children, "should be that this is murder and the woman who does this commits a sin. Still, I want to stress it's a woman's choice."

    It's a woman's choice to commit murder?

  • Adult stem cells have been used to help treat patients with alcoholic liver cirrhosis.

  • Linda Hirschmann has a typical Hirschman piece in the Washington Post making some ludicrous claims about what could happen if Roe v. Wade is overturned.

  • The Argus Leader runs down the exceptions in South Dakota's most recent attempt to ban abortion and allows both sides to explain their position.

  • Sunday funny

First, don't forget to pray for pastors across America who are participating in the Alliance Defense Fund's Pulpit Freedom Sunday today, which I wrote about previously here and here.

adf logo 2.jpgThis is a long-planned project by ADF for pastors in a coordinated effort on September 28, 2008, to defy the IRS's gag rule dating back to 1954 disallowing them and churches from taking political stands. At least 50 pastors across the nation are purposefully doing just that today from the pulpit, such as endorsing a political candidate. All pastors will submit transcripts and video/audiotapes of their sermons to the IRS. The hope is to invoke action by the IRS, get this into court, and overturn this 54 year old First Amendment violation. Go pastors! See ADF video on the constitutional foundation for this project here.

Moving on, the political cartoons this week continued to focus on the Wall Street bailout, so I found none on our issue. But here was one about the aforementioned by Nate Beeler at Townhall.com that made me laugh...

Fact-checking Factcheck.org on Gianna and Obama ads

    factcheck.org.jpg

Only 4 days ago Michelle Malkin called FactCheck.org's output "pure garbage."

    I'm here to corroborate.

On September 24, FC posted an article supposedly fact-checking BornAliveTruth.org's Gianna ad as well as Barack Obama's retaliatory attack ad.

There was no excuse for Jessica Henig's hit piece, at times deliberately deceptive and at times woefully ignorant. We know this because we provided every bit of documentation she requested and some she didn't think to request in the days before she posted her liberal spin.

In addition, we emailed protests with the same corroboration on September 25 to FC's editor, Brooks Jackson, and he, too, lacked the objectivity or understanding to do the right thing as requested, disable the post pending further investigation.

The title of Henig's piece gives its bias away: "'Born Alive' baloney."

I wrote Jackson that Henig's article was wrong from the very first word, indicative of shoddy work to follow. Henig should have started with "An," not "A," and 3 days later it's still wrong:

UPDATE, 9/27, 12p: Statement from NRLC: "NRLC has suspended the posting of the web ad because very late on September 26, an objection was received from an attorney with the Christian Broadcasting Network, asserting that the use of a brief clip from a broadcast CBN interview, showing Barack Obama saying that NRLC was "lying," infringed upon a CBN copyright. • Both the Washington Post and Newsweek have stories about an Alan Guttmacher study which was supposedly released 2 days ago (the closest thing I could find on their web site was a study with a release date in August) on the demographics of who has abortions.

  • Denis Hart, the Archbishop of Victoria is warning Catholic hospitals in Victoria could close their maternity wards if a new abortion law passes. The law would force doctors who object to performing abortions to refer women to an abortion provider.

It appears the Archbishop's warning isn't going unheeded. Proponents of the bill don't seem to fully grasp why doctors who oppose performing abortions don't want to refer women to abortion providers....

New Stanek WND column, "Gianna Jessen: Above Obama's pay grade"

    WND%20logo.gif

Last week, BornAliveTruth.org unveiled its premier ad, featuring for the first time ever an abortion survivor speaking to a national audience. In the ad, Gianna Jessen appealed to Barack Obama to reconsider his prejudice against gutsy babies like her.

Gianna was aborted in 1977 by infamous CA abortionist Edward Allred, who is named on her birth certificate as her attending physician. Gianna's 17-year-old mother aborted her at 29-1/2 weeks' gestation after belatedly deciding the time wasn't right....

Gianna was externally and internally scalded [by a saline solution] for 18 hours, but her mother's bag of waters ruptured before Gianna died, and Gianna was delivered kicking and squalling....

Were it up to Obama, Gianna would not be here....

Planned Parenthood's "Take care down there" videos removed!

JivinJ and I have been writing since the end of July about Planned Parenthood's vulgar "Take care down there" website.

On that (full) front(al assault), good news from the American Life League this afternoon:

Score one for the Good Guys!!! Because of the wide-spread attention you gave our ALL Report on Planned Parenthood's DISGUSTING website www.takecaredownthere.org, the story made its way onto the main-stream media.

    take care down tehre 2.gif

You can see our ALL report on it here: and here. The resulting bad publicity forced PP to remove ALL of the offensive videos!

This is the New Media in action! When you draw as much attention as you did to the nastiness of PP, the drive-by media can no longer ignore what's going on. Kudos to all of you for making this a big deal, and Glory be to God for His grace, aiding in our struggle....

Keep up the good fight. We forced the enemy to retreat, now let's press on!

"The disappearance of Obama's abortion reduction plan: one theory"

This blog post by Obama-leaner Steve Waldman, founder and editor-in-chief of Beliefnet.com, may signal the end of serious attempts by Obama to woo moderate Evangelicals by portraying himself as pro-abortion reduction despite the fact he is radically pro-abortion.

By trying to straddle the issue, Obama has apparently been gaining no ground with religious folk and may have been losing more ground with Hillary supporters. Recent actions indicate Obama may be abandoning the ploy. I submit the release of the BornAliveTruth.org Gianna ad has had something to do with it....

At the Saddleback Forum, Obama boasted, accurately, about how he'd stuck a sentence into the Democratic platform encouraging support for women who wanted to take a baby to term instead of having an abortion. Pro-life progressives hailed that sentence as a great victory and sign that he might be able to win over moderate evangelicals and Catholics with this new "third way" approach.

    two obamas.jpg

Then, the first abortion ads put out by the Obama campaign, didn't mention abortion reduction....

More Catholic Than the Pope: Biden and Pelosi?

From The Weekly Standard, September 29 edition, by Joseph Bottum, editor of First Things...

Do they think this is a debate they're actually going to win? Do they imagine the Catholic theologians of America - from Avery Cardinal Dulles all the way to Sister Sara Butler - are suddenly going to whack their heads and say, "My God, we never thought of that"? What impulse makes Catholic politicians try to argue theology with their own church?...

    pelosi pope.jpg

On and on it went, as stylized as a Kabuki performance - until, with his typical impatience, Denver's archbishop, Charles Chaput, summed up: "Meet the Press has become a national window on the flawed moral reasoning of some Catholic public servants." Fourteen bishops have now issued public statements on the Pelosi and Biden gaffes....

    Lawsuit helps Google see light

From the New York Times, September 21:

After a lawsuit from a Christian anti-abortion group, Google is allowing religious organizations to take out ads using the keyword "abortion," a rare case of the search giant admitting it was wrong.

    google logo.jpg

The group, which wanted to advertise because the House of Commons was considering a bill involving abortion issues, filed a lawsuit against Google in April, saying the company was discriminating on religious grounds....

In the past, Google would not sell the "abortion" keyword to religious groups, but did sell it to other groups, including secular groups, doctors offering abortions and resource sites like Our Bodies, Ourselves....

Google reviewed its policy, and announced last Wednesday it had reached a settlement with the Christian Institute. Terms of the settlement were not disclosed, but Google immediately began allowing ads linked to abortion from religious groups as long as they were determined to be factual, and not graphic or emotional ads.... The change in policy applies worldwide.

You are invited to attend an emergency conference call this Tuesday evening, September 23, at 9:30 PM Eastern (6:30 PM Pacific) to hear abortion survivor Gianna Jessen and nurse Jill Stanek expose the shocking truth about how Barack Obama voted 4 times as an IL State Senator to deny lifesaving medical help to infants who were born alive after a failed abortion.

Jill is the nurse who discovered that these helpless babies were being left to die in the dirty utility room along with the trash, and testified before Barack Obama to tell her story.

Both were trying to get a clear answer from Cindy on her position on Roe v. Wade.

As the video shows, Cindy did not clarify her stance and went further to say abortion is not actually important in the 2008 election:

Diane Sawyer: But Mrs. McCain, do you oppose the repeal of Roe vs. Wade? Was that report correct?

Breaking news: Obama attacks Gianna Jessen ad

UPDATE, 1:50p: Gianna forwarded me a great commentary by Mona Charen today, "Abortions do sometimes produce live births," with this excerpt:

I've received a number of letters from viewers. This one caught my eye: "I am a pediatrician. When I was a pediatric resident on a neonatal intensive care rotation, we were routinely called to resuscitate infants. In one instance I was called to pronounce a baby dead who had been born an hour earlier after a failed abortion. We were not called to resuscitate the baby immediately after the delivery as the intent was abortion. I write to attest that babies are sometimes born alive after abortion and then put aside to die."
    _______________

UPDATE, 1:30p: First lie in Obama ad: attributing the Gianna ad to John McCain, rather than BornAliveTruth.org.

Second lie: "votes taken out of context"? A vote cannot be taken out of context. It's a vote. Notice this is Obama's excuse for every indictment against him.

Third lie: "Obama has always supported medical care to protect infants." FALSE. Remember this, from Obama's 2002 Senate floor speech against Born Alive?

Obama is acknowledging in that audio clip that a baby could be aborted alive but argued against calling a 2nd physician to assess and potentially provide medical care (the 1st physician being the abortionist) because it would place a "burden" on the "original decision" of the mother to abort. How much clearer can Obama's position be?

Also don't forget the Obama campaign admitted to the New York Sun on August 18 that he voted against the identical version of Born Alive as state senator that passed overwhelmingly on the federal level.

Ben Smith at Politico.com is now covering this, as is Hotair.com.

    nyt 2nd day.jpg

Yesterday the New York Times covered BornAliveTruth.org for the 2nd day in a row, this time on its blog:

Battles over abortion rights can often seem Orwellian, but never more so than in the competition for the Catholic vote in this presidential election....

The traditional movement seeking to end abortion rights is not standing down either. A group called BornAliveTruth.org is spending more than $350,000 to run a commercial in OH and NM featuring an abortion survivor and accusing Mr. Obama of voting against a measure to protect the lives of fetuses that somehow live through the procedure. (The Obama campaign disputes the characterization of the vote, which took place in the IL legislature.)

Yes, we must always make sure to include Obama's disproven disclaimer.

And I'm not sure what "Orwellian" means in the context of that first sentence. Perhaps someone can explain.

CNN gets info from liberal blogs

In the article below, CNN posted a still graphic from the BornAliveTruth.org ad with the web address clearly notable, so I'm pretty sure CNN knew the link to get information.

If it had gone to the BAT site, it would have found that I, as BAT's executive director, have a direct connection to Obama and the Born Alive issue.

Instead CNN got its info on me from the liberal blogs. As the Discriminations blogger wrote:

Either because of sloppiness or bias, CNN neglected to mention that Stanek is the former nurse [who testified] before Congress [which] .... passed, with virtually no dissent (it passed the Senate 98-0), even from committed pro-choice legislators, the Born Alive Infant Protection Act. It was an identical Illinois version of that act that Obama blocked, claiming that it would have tended to undermine Roe v. Wade.

But I suppose you could say, if you're CNN, that Stanek "has made controversial statements in the past." And she continues to make them.

    Monday question

Read Charles' Krauthammer's column, "Obama's race to lose - and he just might," making a point I mentioned the other day: Part of Barack Obama's problem now is simply gravity: shooting stars must eventually fall, his in unfortunate conjuction with a new star rising.

Comparing Sarah Palin's candidacy to "like a really bad Disney movie," actor Matt Damon also questioned her stability yesterday: "I need to know if she really think that dinosaurs were here 4,000 years ago. I want to know that, I really do. Because she's gonna have the nuclear codes."

Matt is dissing every person who believes in Creationism. He obviously supports evolution, backed by mainstream science.

Speaking of, I myself am concerned about a man having the nuclear codes who doesn't know who is human and who is not. Obama says he is confused about basic scientific fact that unique individual humans with unique DNA are created at the fertilization of human egg and human sperm. That's breathtakingly ignorant, kind of like Jason Bourne, who didn't know who he was either.

Damon also propagated the known lie, wondering "if she banned books or tried to ban books. I mean - you know, we can't - we can't have that."

Matt needs to do a little less blathering and a little more reading himself. As far as I know Palin hasn't attempted to ban the Internet yet, although now that I've typed that a liberal blogger is certain to cut and paste it into the latest rumor. At any rate, Matt might try reading FactCheck.org, unless he like Obama would prefer to stay liberal and ignorant.

BTW, Palin's response to Damon? Per her spokeswoman, Maria Comella:

It's not surprising that the Barack Obama and his celebrity supporters continue to tear down Governor Palin with little more than blatant name-calling," she said. "It's clear they're threatened by a candidate who actually has a record of achieving reform and change, while Barack Obama just talks about it.

    [HT: Warren Throckmorton],

    Timing is everything

Barack Obama and the Democrat Party's decision to hold the Democrat convention before the Republican convention is a significant reason why he is losing momentum.

This meant Obama had to announce his VP before McCain.

If Obama could conduct one do-over, I'd bet it would be to pick Hillary Clinton as his running mate. He got cocky about his poll numbers and also allowed his pride get in the way of not wanting to be overshadowed in the White House.

Yesterday, Obama's loose-lipped sidekick, Joe Biden, said as much:

The tenuous relationship between Hillary women and Obama snapped when they were given a female alternative, no matter what her politics are we now see.

Obama's other problem with big mo is human nature. We build people up just to knock them off the pedestal. Obama had been on his for 19 long months. Just as people decided they were growing tired of him after the Berlin experience, along came a fresh face to speed the process.

New Stanek WND column, "Obama digs deeper on 'pay grade' gaffe"

    WND%20logo.gif

On ABC's "This Week" with George Stephanopoulos this past Sunday, Barack Obama tried to undo the damage he inflicted on himself at the Aug. 16 Saddleback Showdown with his now infamous "above my pay grade" response to Rick Warren's question, "At what point does a baby get human rights, in your view?"

But Obama hadn't learned. He tried once again to redirect the clearly constitutionally based question into something esoteric and religious, and therefore unsolvable:

Obama: "I mean, what I intended to say is that, as a Christian, I have a lot of humility about understanding when does the soul enter into..."

But Warren clearly had not asked, "When does a baby get a soul?"...

And what did Obama mean by....

Important SD abortion ban call tomorrow night

    support sd.jpg

For the 2nd consecutive election cycle, SD will vote on an abortion ban this November.

Last time pro-aborts successfully fought the ban because it had no exceptions. This time it has a rape/incest exception and - surprise - pro-aborts have found new reasons to fight the ban. According to SupportSouthDakota.com:

In addition to launching a massive multi-million-dollar media campaign -- filled with lies and misinformation -- Planned Parenthood and the abortion industry have brought in hired-gun political consultants who are using every trick in the book to try and kill this lifesaving law.

The sad thing is that Planned Parenthood's scheme seems to be working so far.

Tomorrow night at 9p EST there will be a massive nationwide fundraising teleconference. On the call with be SD ban organizer Leslie Unruh as well as 40 Days for Life David Bereit and others. Please go to SupportSouthDakota.com to register for the call.

  • Greg Koukl discusses Senator Joe Biden's Meet the Press answer about abortion and the beginning of human life:

The logic of the modified pro-choice position reduces to, "I think it's wrong to kill my own children, but I don't think we should stop other people from killing theirs."

Notice that this critique has nothing to do with whether abortion is right or wrong. That's a different question. I am simply pointing out that the modified pro-choice view deals itself a fatal blow. That is Biden's blunder, and the blunder of anyone else advancing such a foolish notion....

Obama's "lipstick on a pig" slur III

Here is Barack Obama's incredulous, sarcastic response to the entire world - including his own audience of friendlies yesterday - who immediately connected his "lipstick on a pig" comment to Sarah Palin's best line in her veep acceptance speech, "What is the difference between a hockey mom and a pitbull? Lipstick."

Again, by denying the undeniable, Obama only digs his hole deeper.

Clearly Palin has Obama so rattled he's doffing his Mr. Nice Guy facade. Obama today, like NARAL a few days ago, referred back to Palin's hockey mom-bulldog-lipstick comment, insinuating Palin is a pig:

Biden's big mouth: birth defects vs. embryonic stem cell research

The fear in naming Joe Biden as Barack Obama's running mate was his notoriously big mouth.

Today the first big cringing oh-no came.

    Reports CBS:

John McCain's campaign expressed outrage over comments made by Joe Biden, who used disabled children as an example to criticize Republicans who do not support stem cell research.

    biden columbia.jpg

McCain spokesman Ben Porritt took the attack as being directed at GOP vice presidential nominee Sarah Palin, who has a child with Down syndrome.

"Barack Obama's running mate sunk to a new low today launching an offensive debate over who cares more about special needs children," wrote Porritt in a statement. "Playing politics with this issue is disturbing and indicative of a desperate campaign."

Biden made the comment at a town hall style meeting in Columbia, MO, today, saying, "I hear all this talk about how the Republicans are going to work in dealing with parents who have both the joy, because there's joy to it as well, the joy and the difficulty of raising a child who has a developmental disability, who were born with a birth defect. Well guess what folks? If you care about it, why don't you support stem cell research?"...

    Biden: life begins at conception

UPDATE, 11:50a: The New York Times has a story today on Biden's attempted parse on the abortion issue [HT: moderator Chris]:

... Biden's views... came at a time when his party is confronted with a new face: Gov. Sarah Palin... whose anti-abortion stance and decision to give birth just 5 months ago to a baby with Down syndrome have revved up the conservative base of her party.

    Trig

I've been meaning to post this for a few days, very touching. By Rich Lowry of National Review Online, August 31:

I found the Palin event Friday incredibly moving. Partly because of Trig.

The sentimentalist in me would be willing to see anyone who is loving and unselfish enough to welcome a Down kid into their family elevated to high office.

    sarah-palin-baby-downs--vl-vertical.jpg

When I was thinking of Trig, I was reminded of an encounter I had a couple of weeks ago on the Delta Shuttle from Washington to New York. It was a mostly empty plane, but I went all the back to the very emptiest part of the plane to spread out and enjoy the quiet. And there was a man sitting in the very back row who immediately piped up, "Hi. I'm Ian. Would you like to sit next to me?"

He was a guy with Down Syndrome, maybe in his twenties. I declined the offer, but we struck up a conversation. He was going to New York for a family celebration, including for his birthday. I told him I had a birthday coming up too and he lit up and came over to vigorously shake my hand in congratulations - more delighted by my birthday than his own....

American Right to Life stages sit-in at Dobson's office

Sigh... I have good friends and respected pro-life colleagues who are members of American Right to Life. They did such a good job establishing credibility with their Sheets of Shame huge pro-life sign at the Denver National Convention, and then they had to do this. It's as if they can't handle respect.

From the Associated Press, September 4:

Eight people have been escorted by police from the lobby of Focus on the Family headquarters in Colorado Springs after showing up to protest an endorsement by the group's founder.

    dobson sit in.jpg

About a dozen protesters from American Right to Life Action arrived at Focus around 7:45 a.m. Thursday. Two hours later, 8 of the protesters went inside the building and refused to leave.

Officers escorted them out a short time later.

The ARLA says Focus founder Dr. James Dobson violated a pledge to God to never back a candidate who supports abortion. Dobson recently said on his radio show that he would "pull the lever for John McCain" if the election were held today.

The group charges McCain voted to approve abortion funding for pregnancies stemming from rape or incest.

How pathetic that Obama obviously had his own tribe, liberals, in mind, who sure know how to mete out punishment with vicious aplomb at such times.

Thanks to a Daily Kos blogger, who falsely accused Sarah Palin of faking her pregnancy with now 4-month-old son Trig to cover for his real mother, her 17-year-old daughter, Bristol, the Palin family was forced to
announce Sept. 1 that unmarried Bristol is 5 months pregnant.

Besides the fact the Daily Kos blogger had obviously been watching too many soap operas, he flouted the supposed rule that candidates' children are off limits, even posting close-ups of Bristol's belly. After being up 3 days, the post was only removed thanks to more exciting Bristol fare....

Palin cements emergence of abortion in presidential campaign

Palin-baby-RNC.jpgSocial conservatism has been much ballyhooed the past year. In fact, we were deflated after a simultaneous Republican-controlled House, Senate and Oval Office didn't do more to stop abortion and then a presidential candidate was picked with whom we had issues.

"I am absolutely convinced that culture wars are so '90s," said Barack Obama during his July 2007 speech at a Planned Parenthood Action Fund event. ""Their days are growing dark.... We're tired of arguing about the same old stuff."

Of course Obama wanted abortion to be yesterday's news. He only looks like a monster when he argues for partial birth abortion and against protecting abortion survivors.

MSM, also pro-abortion, wanted the topic of abortion to go away, too, for the same reason (plus squashing us ensured an Obama win). If you support abortion, you must support all of it or your arguments fall apart, and MSM didn't like being forced to discuss its far reaches.

MSM did a fair job looking the other way the past few weeks despite the revelation that Obama misrepresented his vote against identical legislation in IL to declare even abortion survivors as persons that passed overwhelmingly on the national level.

But John McCain's surprising nomination of Sarah Palin as his running-mate has done a couple of things. It has cemented discussion of abortion as a top story, and it has shown everyone the value of social conservatives and perhaps even reminded us kicked dogs of same....

Olbermann misrepresents Obama's opposition to Born Alive; MSNBC slants GOP abortion coverage

Last night during his Republican National Convention speech, Fred Thompson skewered Barack Obama for his opposition to IL's Born Alive Infants Protection Act:

We don't need a president who thinks protecting the unborn or the newborn baby is above his pay grade.

Afterward, MSNBC's Chris Matthews engaged in a lengthy discussion on that point with Republican NM Congresswoman Heather Wilson.

Keith Olbermann couldn't help but jump in to carry water for Obama by misstating that Obama opposed Born Alive because there was already a law in place, which was false. Here's the video:

Read reasons why Olbermann's rationale of Obama's vote this was flat out false on page 2.

In fact, MSNBC reporters slanted their GOP abortion coverage last night, obsessing about the pro-life platform and politicians when last week at the Democrat Convention they totally ignored the radical abortion positions of the party and politicians, most notably Obama, who supports infanticide if it would otherwise interfere with abortion. From the Media Research Center's report...

Obama ad slams McCain on abortion

    UPDATE, 7:45p: Hear the ad.

Obama's got a lot of nerve, but what else can he do? He's attempting to pull himself out of defensive mode on abortion by going on the offense. From Politico, September 2:

Barack Obama has launched a broadside against John McCain's opposition to abortion rights and moved one of the most divisive issues in modern American politics to the airwaves on a large scale for the first time in this presidential campaign.

    composite both.jpg

Obama's new radio ad, airing widely in at least 7 swing states, tells voters McCain "will make abortion illegal." It's airing as McCain courts female voters with the addition of the staunchly anti-abortion governor of AK, Sarah Palin, to his ticket.

Democrats had, until now, sought to appeal to women primarily on economic issues such as health care and workplace discrimination; abortion rights were hardly mentioned at the Democratic National Convention in Denver last week....
