Three ghosts haunt Obama

Michael Barone, a U.S. News & World Report columnist, had the following op ed published in several news outlets, including the Boston Herald, August 31:

Barack Obama... has 3 major vulnerabilities here as I see it. One is his 20-year relationship with the Rev. Jeremiah Wright....

three ghosts.jpg

Another problem is Obama's relationship with the unrepentant Weather Underground terrorist bomber William Ayers....

Finally, there is Obama's 2003 vote against a bill, "virtually identical" as the Obama campaign admits, to one that passed the U.S. Senate 98-0, banning the killing of fetuses who have survived abortions....

Liberals like Obama tend to go over the line between positions and associations that most voters find reasonable (though they may not agree) and those they find outrageous. They assume, usually correctly, that mainstream media will be reluctant to report on the latter, as has been the case in all those mentioned above. Conservatives take more care to separate themselves from the outrageous because they know mainstream media will pounce on them if they don't.

On Ayers, the Obama campaign has tried to suppress discussion. But it will likely fail. The emergence of new media and the First Amendment mean that is like stopping the Mississippi River from flowing to the sea. If I were advising Obama, I would tell him to confess error, as he arguably has on Wright, on both Ayers and the Born Alive Protection Act, lest they cause his campaign as much damage as the furlough ads caused Michael Dukakis and the Swift Boat ads caused John Kerry.

Comments:

The GOP has ordered its smear merchants to launch an all out smear assault on Obama, to try to distract from the Palin blunder.

Since the GOP has no ideas, their only stragegy is "hate, fear, scare and smear..." It worked before, so why not try it again?

LTL, since you qualify the GOP's assault against Obama as a smear, then what do you call the Dem's assault against Palin?

The Four Stages of Conservative Female Abuse
by Michelle Malkin
Creators Syndicate
Copyright 2008

There's something about outspoken conservative women that drives the Left mad. It's a peculiar pathology I've reported on for more than 15 years, both as a witness and a target. Thus, the onset of Palin Derangement Syndrome in the media, Democrat circles, and the cesspools of the blogosphere came as no surprise. They just can't help themselves.
Liberals hold a special animus for constituencies they deem traitors. Minorities who identify as social and economic conservatives have left the plantation and sold out their people. Women who put an 'R' by their name have abandoned their ovaries and betrayed their gender. As Republican officeholders and conservative public figures who are women have grown in number and visibility, the progression of Conservative Female Abuse has worsened. The astonishing vitriol and virulent hatred directed at GOP Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin is the most severe manifestation to date.
The first stage of Conservative Female Abuse by the Left is infantilization. Right-wing women can't possibly believe what they believe about the sanctity of life, self-defense, free markets, or foreign policy. They must be submissive little dolls of the White Male Hierarchy. Or, as a far Left (is there any other kind of Left in San Francisco?) San Francisco Chronicle columnist wrote of First Lady Laura Bush, they must be put in their place as 'docile doormats' with no brains of their own. True to form, no sooner had John McCain announced Gov. Palin as his veep pick than jeers of 'Palin = neocon puppet' sprouted across the Internet.
The second stage of CFA is sexualization. A conservative woman is not merely a sellout. She is an intellectual prostitute. Unable or unwilling to argue with them on the merits, detractors resort to mocking the physical appearance of their ideological opponents in skirts and denigrating them with vulgar epithets. MSNBC hosts insulted former GOP presidential candidate Fred Thompson’s accomplished wife and mother of two, Jeri Thompson, as working the stripper pole. Newspaper cartoonists Ted Rall, Pat Oliphant, and Jeff Danziger caricatured Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice as a mammy, thick-lipped parrot, and Bush 'House Nigga' armed with 'hair straightener.' New York Times columnist Maureen Dowd derided former GOP Florida secretary of state Katherine Harris for applying 'her makeup with a trowel.'
True to form, Dowd was first out of the box to snicker at Gov. Palin’s beauty pageant past, ridicule her 'beehive and sexy shoes,' and compare her path to the vice presidential nomination as a 'hokey chick flick.' Joe Biden backhandedly praised her as 'good looking.' And left-wing bloggers worked overtime on lurid photoshops of Palin as a bikini model and porn star. At the Democratic Underground, a highly trafficked liberal website raising money for Barack Obama, members held a contest to come up with nicknames and posters to slime GOP Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin — and then to 'spread [them] all over the ‘net.' Among the 'nicer' entries: 'Cruella,' 'Gidget,' 'Governor Jesus Camp,' 'VPILF,' 'Fertilla the Huntress,' 'Iditabroad,' and 'KILLER PYSCHO FUNDIE BITCH FROM HELL!!'
The third stage of CFA is demonization. When the Left tires of hurling whore insults, it turns conservative women in the public eye into nefarious creatures. Bill Maher called Laura Bush 'Hitler’s dog.' George Carlin attacked Barbara Bush as 'the Silver douchebag.' A Huffington Post website member wrote of Nancy Reagan: 'Like her evil husband, she has lived far too long. Here’s hoping the hag suffers for several weeks, then croaks in the tub.' Another added: 'I feel no pity for the bitch who took delight in watching thousands die of a horrible disease and watching the poor having to eat out of dumpsters because of her husband’s political beliefs.'
True to form, rumors of Palin being a crypto-Nazi surfaced on the Internet and the fringe media. And liberal critics used her gun-rights record to smear her as bloodthirsty.
And the final stage of CFA is dehumanization. Conservative women aren’t real women according to the liberal feminist establishment’s definition. Remember when Gloria Steinem called Texas Republican Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison a 'female impersonator?' Or when curdled NOW leader Patricia Ireland instructed Democrats to vote only for 'authentic' female political candidates? Or when Al Gore’s fashion consultant Naomi Wolf described the foreign-policy analysis of Jeane Kirkpatrick as being 'uninflected by the experiences of the female body?'
Echoing the bottom-feeders in the liberal blogosphere, mainstream journalists and Obama water-carriers now question Palin’s commitment to motherhood and even challenged her pre-natal care decisions in an effort to destroy her. Forget about questioning their patriotism. I question their sanity.

It's been trickling out of the cracks and there is more to come.

IMHO, The McCain Campaign itself should take Obama on directly and forcefully, for his covert radicalism with all the documentation.

But, they may not.

Of all the smears, the Wiliams Ayers smear may be the dumbest. When Ayers was engaged in "terrorist activities" Obama was 7 years of age and living (at least) 5000 miles away.

Anyone who has a beef against Ayers should address it to the University of Illinois, which made him a distinguished tenured professor and the numerous educational and charitable foundations that made him a board member and advisor. Obama and many other distinguished citizens have sat on a board with him.

I believe that would include that notorious terrorist, Richard Daley, Mayor of Chicago...

As for Jeremiah Wright, I think the smearers might want to shelve that, since the recorded sermons of Palin's wacky preacher are emerging, along with her support for "Jews for Jesus", an organization most Jews view as anti-semitic.

I'm sure there are morons who will listen to the smears of Hannity, O'Reilley, Limbaugh, Malkin and the other GOP puppets, but most voters have a brain and are not afraid to use it.

wow, this is increadible news! why would Obama align himself with a terrorist who bombed the pentagon! I just read that William Ayers is the one who helped laugh Obama's political career! how outrageous. Why is the media covering for Obama, why have we not heard about but heard about Palin 17 yr-old daughters life.

LTL: Of all the smears, the Wiliams Ayers smear may be the dumbest. When Ayers was engaged in "terrorist activities" Obama was 7 years of age and living (at least) 5000 miles away.

But more recently the anarchist says they didn't do enough and he didn't regret setting bombs!! Don't you types ever finish your sentences with "the rest of the story"?!

http://www.city-journal.org/2008/eon0430jm.html

....Though no one was ever caught or tried for the attempt on my family’s life, there was never any doubt who was behind it. Only a few weeks after the attack, the New York contingent of the Weathermen blew themselves up making more bombs in a Greenwich Village townhouse. The same cell had bombed my house, writes Ron Jacobs in The Way the Wind Blew: A History of the Weather Underground. And in late November that year, a letter to the Associated Press signed by Bernardine Dohrn, Ayers’s wife, promised more bombings.

As the association between Obama and Ayers came to light, it would have helped the senator a little if his friend had at least shown some remorse. But listen to Ayers interviewed in the New York Times on September 11, 2001, of all days: “I don’t regret setting bombs. I feel we didn’t do enough.” Translation: “We meant to kill that judge and his family, not just damage the porch.” When asked by the Times if he would do it all again, Ayers responded: “I don’t want to discount the possibility.”

Though never a supporter of Obama, I admired him for a time for his ability to engage our imaginations, and especially for his ability to inspire the young once again to embrace the political system. Yet his myopia in the last few months has cast a new light on his “politics of change.” Nobody should hold the junior senator from Illinois responsible for his friends’ and supporters’ violent terrorist acts. But it is fair to hold him responsible for a startling lack of judgment in his choice of mentors, associates, and friends, and for showing a callous disregard for the lives they damaged and the hatred they have demonstrated for this country. It is fair, too, to ask what those choices say about Obama’s own beliefs, his philosophy, and the direction he would take our nation.

At the conclusion of his 2001 Times interview, Ayers said of his upbringing and subsequent radicalization: “I was a child of privilege and I woke up to a world on fire.”

Funny thing, Bill: one night, so did I.

Thank God the Obama campaign does not take it's advice from Barone.

Posted by: Hal at September 3, 2008 1:57 PM

LTL,

William Ayers hosted a fund-raiser for Obama when he decided to run for the IL senate. Ayers is still unrepentant regarding his domestic terrorist activity. They have community organizing ties to very radical leftist organizations. He listened to Rev. Wright's rantings for 20 yrs and espouses the same Black Liberation Theology. Read his autobiography -- it is very revealing.

Jasper,

Michelle Malkin is right on target. I knew that the Far-Left and their spokes-piece, the MSM would get ugly. I hope it backfires tremendously.

from Beliefnet.

But there's something else going on here, and it has at least one Christian leader worried. Mark DeMoss, former chief of staff to Jerry Falwell and now a leading Christian public relations executive, is hoping that Palin turns out well but has been shocked and worried by the reflexive Christian embrace of her.

"Too many evangelicals and religious conservative are too preoccupied with values and faith and pay no attention to competence. We don't apply this approach to anything else in life, including choosing a pastor." Imagine, he said, if a church was searching for a pastor and the leadership was brought a candidate with great values but little experience. "They've been a pastor for two years at a church with 150 people but he shares our values, so we hired him to be pastor of our 5,000 person church? It wouldn't happen! We don't say, 'He shares our values, so let's hire him.' That's absurd. Yet we apply that to choosing presidents. It blows my mind."

Eileen,

Now let's just imagine if an unrepentent abortion clinic bomber hosted a fundraiser for Sarah Palin. Let's say Palin was only a child when this bombtosser blew up a few clinics. Let's also say he has only expressed regret he didn't blow up a lot more clinics and doesn't discount the likelihood he would do it all again.
What, just what, do you think the reaction would be?

To me, the really amazing thing about Obama's support of infanticide over the last few weeks has been that HIS OWN CAMPAIGN outted him for lying about it.

What does that say about Obama's situation that his own campaign would come out within 24 hours of his interview and say Obama was lying when he gave his reason for voting against the bill?

So it would bother you if Palin associated with a terrorist but it doesn't when Obama does?
Also, who said anything about partying with terrorists? I'm talking about associating with one.

Posted by: Mary at September 3, 2008 3:43 PM

LTL --

It's not a smear to point out that a Harvard educated, politically saavy man such as Obama choose to have a close relationship with a known and unrepentant terrorist. That is a fact.

Unless you think that Obama was just some babe in the woods when he began his business/social relationship. Just like you may think that Obama was deaf and blind while he attended Rev. Wright's racist church.

I think it would be a smear to say that Mr. Obama is blind, deaf, and dumb -- but by dismissing these relationships and actions, you are implying it.

Posted by: LB at September 3, 2008 3:43 PM

Truthfully, I think the guilt-by-association thing is wearing a bit thin. A lot thin, actually. So Obama picked some really crappy friends? So what? So his preacher is an anti-American hatemonger? So what? The most those things can tell us about Obama Himself is that he has poor taste in friends and mentors.

Hit 'em on the issues. Freddo was dead-right last night. Obama is the least-experienced, most-liberal candidate to ever run for President. He supports the "right" to abortion into the fourth trimester. He wants to turn a stunning victory-in-the-making in Iraq into a defeat that will haunt the American psyche for generations ... and destabilize the Middle East even more than it has been. He wants to repeal DOMA, the Defense of Marriage Act. He wants to bring us socialized medicine.

Let's face it. Obama is so far outside the American mainstream that he couldn't find it with a map, a bloodhound, and a native guide.

The only reason that Saint Obama stands any chance this year is because of the massive anti-Republican mood that has possessed our country for the moment. The Iraq War is looking good now, but it was threatening to become an utter quagmire until the Surge. Entrenched Republicans allowed themselves to be seduced by power, earmarks, and lobbyists. Basically, the GOP has done everything within its power during the last few years to hand the country over to the Angry Left. :(

Nonetheless, Obama can still lose. For the reasons I stated above, he is shockingly vulnerable as a candidate. If we hit him on the issues, America will see him for who he really is. Not a savior ... just another hard-Left product of the Democratic Machine.

Posted by: Naaman at September 3, 2008 3:45 PM

Naaman --

I agree with you on the most part, but I do think friends we make as adults do reflect on our judgement. If you hang with people who loudly proclaim hatred for the country, as he does, it's an issue.

The issues do need to be at the center because Obama is so far outside the mainstream that he needs a map to find it. He doesn't do well supporting his beliefs when asked -- loads of umms, and ahhs -- unless he has a teleprompter and a canned speech. A wide mile and an inch deep as long as issues are discussed.

The whole 'above my pay grade' comment was a perfect illustration of his smugness and lack of depth.

I can't wait for the debates.

"They've been a pastor for two years at a church with 150 people but he shares our values, so we hired him to be pastor of our 5,000 person church?

See, now that's nuts! Of course we'd hire them. I'd never been a mom before but no one said "Hey, you're not qualified to be pregnant! You've never raised a kid!"

The definition of being a pastor is someone that shares your values. That's his JOB! Every Pastor that ever led a church had a "first day on the job"! Nuts, just nuts.

By that definition, Obama has never led a country, so why should he lead this one. He's never been president before! Oh NO!

If a pastor led a church of 150 people and did a fantastic job, so much so that all of the other churches looked up to him, and managed to out 4 pedophile priests, expose corruption within the archdiocese, and still led those hundred and fifty people in their spiritual life, then OF COURSE I'd hire him! Wouldn't you?

And why is it that everyone keeps comparing Palin to Obama. Last I heard she was running for VICE president, and Obama was running for PRESIDENT.

Why isn't anyone comparing Biden to McCain?????

You're kidding right? Fred Thompson was an assistant US attorney, the special counsel on several Senate committees and spent almost 10 years in the Senate as the Senator from Tennessee.

Do we really need to go over JFK? Military experience. A member of the US House of Representatives for what, 6,8 years? Senator for roughly the same amount of time?

Yeah, compared to them I'd say Obama IS THE LEAST EXPERIENCED PERSON TO EVER RUN FOR PRESIDENT, WITHOUT QUESTION!

I've posted about Abraham Lincoln before. I still wouldn't say he was less experienced. He owned businesses (most failed) worked as a lawyer and did have some government experience.

I would say that the MAIN difference between Obama and Lincoln is that while Obama thinks he's entitled to the job, Lincoln was at all times humble, thoughful, and direct. Three traits you could NOT use to describe Obama. (Boy, it hurt me to use both their names in the same sentence.)

Posted by: Kristen at September 3, 2008 5:51 PM

If all you have against Obama is an aging criminal, a stale law and a former pastor you might want to look at John McCain as well... John Hagee is quite the pastor (for Israel, but come the end the Jews goto hell); you might also want to look into the Keating 5 and you most certainly want to look into any deals that his lobbyist\advisor has with the Republic of Georgia.

if you're looking for months of scandal you've got to goto the source.

It's a question of focus. There are so many arguments against Saint Obama that they can't all get air-time. We need to focus. We need to concentrate our efforts on those areas which will give us the greatest chance of defeating the most pro-abortion Presidential ticket in American history.

I suggest that guilt-by-association is not the area in which we should focus. There may be some legitimacy to it, but it's a much weaker point overall. As Saint Obama Himself once said:
You make a big election about small things.

Both parties are doing that to some degree, and we need to rise above it. So let's make this big election about big things. We're right on the issues, and Obama is 100% dead wrong. Let's make that case ... and stop dredging up silly stuff like Obama's middle name, his wolf-in-sheep's-clothing pastor, and his association with Ayers.
