UPDATE, 11/19, 3:15p: Last week I asked you to vote for pro-life blogger Thomas Peters to receive a $10k college scholarship. The CareNet contest today prompted me to ask Thomas about the outcome of his venture. Thomas reported that the contest ends tomorrow, adding:

DailyKos and the ultra-liberal blogs got into supporting #1 with thousands of votes, and all the ESPN-watching sportsfans are pushing hard for the current #2.

Me? Well, holding on to #3 is no small achievement with that sort of competition, and I'm really happy with all the support I've received.

Last year 3rd place carried a $1,000 check - so I'll be able to pay off some loan interest this year. ;-)

Barna has analyzed the vote breakdown for president and determined a whopping 88% of evangelicals voted for McCain and only 11% for Obama.

Barna determined evangelicals not by whether they said they were evangelical but by how they responded to 9 questions.

Have you ever wondered exactly what an evangelical is? Here were the criteria to qualify as an evangelical, according to Barna:

"Born again Christians" are defined as people who said they have made a personal commitment to Jesus Christ that is still important in their life today and who also indicated they believe that when they die they will go to Heaven because they had confessed their sins and had accepted Jesus Christ as their savior. Respondents are not asked to describe themselves as "born again."

"Evangelicals" meet the born again criteria (described above) plus 7 other conditions....

UPDATE, 11-17, 1:10p: Got this report from someone who attended one of Fr. Newman's church services yesterday [HT: moderator Carder]:

Fr. Newman gave the shortest homily he has ever given. He is responding with humility and obedience. He said that he should have been more careful with what he previously wrote, but he was rushing to meet the bulletin deadline. He also said that Friday was the darkest day of his life, but the support of parishioners and the Dominican sisters there moved him to tears. So I am sure he still needs lots of prayers. There were a few vulgar protestors, but mostly present were supporters of Fr. Newman outside the church grounds. Thank goodness it is a heavily Christian/Baptist area.

Stojan Adasevic, who performed 48,000 abortions, sometimes up to 35 per day, is now the most important pro-life leader in Serbia, after spending 26 years as the most renowned abortion doctor in the country.

A Freeper has posted a more detailed story on Adesevic, originally published in Love One Another Catholic magazine in 2004, a triumphal read, although gory and heartbreaking along the way....

Stojan Adasevic will never forget the day he was organizing the filing cabinet in the doctors' room. He was a medical student at the time. A number of gynecologists entered the room. Paying no attention to the student crouched over a pile of papers in the corner, they began swapping stories about their medical practice.

Dr. Rado Ignatovic recalled a patient who had come to him for an abortion. The procedure failed because the doctor had been unable to align the cervix. As the gynecologists went on discussing the woman's history, Stojan, who had been listening in, suddenly stiffened. He realized that the woman under discussion -- a former dentist at the nearby clinic -- was his mother.

"She's dead now" -- observed one of the doctors -- but I wonder what happened to the unwanted child?" Stojan couldn't resist. "I'm the child!" he said, getting up. Silence fell over the room. Seconds later the doctors were walking out.

Over the years Dr. Adasevic would have cause to recall that event many times. It was perfectly clear to him: he owed his life to the fact of a failed abortion. He would never make such a blunder himself. Many women were referred to him because of difficulty in aligning the cervix. This was never a problem for Stojan. He became the best abortionist in Belgrade....

The world's first so-called pregnant man, in actuality a half-sex changed woman, will appear tomorrow night on ABC's 20/20 with Barbara Walters. According to On Top:

The interview is the first [Thomas] Beatie and his wife [Nancy] have given since the birth of their daughter, Susan. The hour-long report promises an exclusive inside look at the Beatie family household and footage from inside the hospital during Susan's birth.

But there's more. Walters announced on The View this morning that Beatie is pregnant again. Susan was born June 29, 2008, and her sib is due June 12, 2009. Irish twins.

Pro-abort columnist Camille Paglia wrote a great piece in liberal Salon magazine yesterday, joining the growing list of Obama-supporting journalists writing morning after confessionals.

The excerpt I'm posting is lengthy but very good. Paglia's bold, brave thoughts on Palin, who "as a pro-life wife, mother and ambitious professional represents the next big shift in feminism," come near the end.

But Paglia is also the 1st credentialed liberal I've seen express serious concern about Obama's birth certificate, questions about which I've been dismissing as conspiracy theory. It was the Sunday after the election, and everywhere I looked I could only see impending doom.

There is no way God would have allowed Barack Obama to become president were He not finally turning America over to judgment, to whatever great or lesser extent that will be.

I sat in my mother's church and was surprised to feel anger when the worship leader smiled and sang the same songs as ever, as if life hadn't drastically changed the week before, as if the Church itself wasn't indicted by Obama's election.

Then my eye caught....

I described that incident on my blog Monday and got enough notes of sympathy I decided I'd better get a grip. Pity is pathetic.

Enough of this, I said to myself. Barack Obama is only a man....

Got this email from a friend of mine, a pro-life leader in TN...

I don't want to add to anyone's despair, but even I was shocked last evening at the all night post office here in Nashville when an African American in line greeted an entering black pastor.

Naturally (?) the conversation began loudly with how well things were going with a fresh wind blowing, etc. I barely shook my head near the back of the line when a black woman next to me cheerfully said, " guess you don't agree." I responded as most pro-lifers would that it was exciting to have a black president but not one so committed to killing the unborn... not to mention using our tax dollars to accomplish it.

At first, she gently chided me saying that many people pay tax dollars to fund practices to which they object (stem cell research, death penalty, etc.) I told her that I also objected to those practices as well. She started to heat up, however, as an elderly black woman injected her view that women seeking abortions were "going to have to answer to God for that....

This is just scandalous. Not only did pro-life actions against the SD abortion ban stop it, but they likely stopped all future efforts. Reported Medical News Today yesterday:

The defeat of abortion ballot measures across the country - such as SD's Initiated Measure 11 to ban virtually all abortions in the state - may have been the result of divisions among antiabortion groups, the Tennessean reports.

Opposition to the measure in SD came from the antiabortion groups American Life League and SD Right to Life. The groups did not support the measure because of its exceptions to the abortion ban - cases of rape or incest or in narrowly defined instances "to preserve the health or life of the woman."...

A couple days ago Kim H. at Feministing wrote a critique of my column last week, which I ignored frankly because it was foolish and not very original.

Silliest of all was Kim's inability to grasp the meaning of my hyperbolic ("a figure of speech that is an exaggeration") use of the terminology "4th trimester" abortions in the 1st paragraph, to describe, as I explained in the 2nd paragraph, Barack Obama's support of "abandoning abortion survivors to die."

Kim had to let me know, "'Tri' means three."

I was disappointed Kim didn't appreciate my creative flair (although I must give credit to Fr. Frank Pavone for 1st coining the "4th trimester" term) but could only comprehend the dimension in front of her, the black and white on the screen.

But now I'm getting heckled by some of Kim's like-nonminded friends who don't understand what I meant either, even though I was kind enough to explain it for crowd densities. For instance, Lauren A. of Michigan Technological University emailed me this morning to wonder, "What, pray tell, is a fourth trimester?"

And then came a not very nice note from Rosie W.-G....

UPDATE, 8:40a: From the Associated Press, yesterday:

The head of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, opening a national church meeting Monday, said that continued support for abortion rights will undermine any advances in social justice that come from a new president and Congress....

[I]n a later news conference, [Cardinal Francis] George... said bishops' are preparing to lobby the Obama administration on any policies that diverge from Catholic teaching on marriage, abortion and other issues....

Catholic leaders - who run hospitals, adoption agencies and other charities nationwide - are deeply concerned that any changes in state and federal law not interfere with policies in Catholic agencies that reflect church theology.

They'd best be prepared to close doors if Obama attempts to follow through with some of his plans.

I'm feeling very militant these days. We'll just see how pro-life we all are. If we all refuse to blink, we could beat Obama back. He can't enact policies that close hospitals.

The election revealed how bitter divisions among some Catholics have become, but it also revealed how many others are just shrugging off the bishops' teachings.

The Obama campaign announced over the weekend it has "compiled a list of about 200 Bush administration actions and executive orders that could be swiftly undone," according to the Washington Post.

Whenever we think of President-elect Obama undoing pro-life policies, reflect back that they were done by President Bush. We shall soon have a better understanding as to just how pro-life he was.

Executive orders and policy changes will be just part of the story. Also track Obama's deadly staff and department appointments in contrast to President Bush's.

But my mind since Thursday has been on one particular email from a "no exceptions" pro-lifer that has made me very sad, broke my heart actually, particularly since I count this person as a friend....

These numbers come from Americans United for Life:

U.S. House

There are 435 House members. 218 are needed for a majority.

There are currently 185 sold pro-life members and 32 nominal pro-life members to equal 217, one less than needed for a majority.

Democrats picked up 19 seats (with 8 additional still being contested). Of those, "17 [are] pro-Planned Parenthood representatives," according to PP CEO Cecile Richards.

So pro-lifers suffered a net loss and have moved further away from a majority.

U.S. Senate

Pro-lifers sustained 5 losses.

3 races are still open: Ted Stevens (R-AK), Norm Coleman (R-MN), and Saxby Chambliss (R-GA). All 3 are pro-life.

There are currently 39 pro-life senators. If all 3 of the aforementioned go on to win, there will be 42, meaning we will be filibuster-proof in the Senate.

So the prospect of Congress passing the Freedom of Choice Act is shaky, but pro-lifers must remain on guard for any movement whatsoever. Barack Obama has already promised he welcomes signing it.

The treatment President Bush has received from this country is nothing less than a disgrace. The attacks launched against him have been cruel and slanderous, proving to the world what little character and resolve we have. The president is not to blame for all these problems. Our failure to stand by the one person who continued to stand by us has not gone unnoticed by our enemies. Preserving the sanctity of human life in America lost 5 for 5. Following are results as of 6a.

CA: Proposition 4, Abortion Waiting Period and Parental Notification Initiative, aka Sarah's Law; lost in 2005 and 2006; Los Angeles Times reported November 1 was winning slightly 45% to 43%; CBS News reported November 3 was losing 46% to 40% with 7% undecided.

RESULT: FAILED (52.7% to 47.3% with 88.8% of votes counted)

CO: Amendment 48, Colorado Equal Rights Amendment, defines personhood as beginning at conception; Denver Post reported November 1 it was losing by a wide margin, "Nearly 2/3... of voters... against.... 25% supported... and 12%... undecided."

General thoughts...

A guy interviewing me on radio yesterday asked, "If Obama wins, you know he's coming after you, right?" That had never occurred to me. The concept is so presumptuous.

Actually, the opposite had occurred to me, and that's how I responded: "No, if Obama wins, I'm coming after him."

My thought has been in recent weeks when pondering the almost unthinkable that an Obama win might provide an opening I frankly couldn't find with the Bush administration or Republican held Congress. Obama has protested so strongly that he opposes infanticide of abortion survivors, it would seem a good time to propose enforcement penalties to the Born Alive Infants Protection Act....

If adults watch porn to become sexually aroused, it naturally follows that the soft porn shows on MTV and cable and suggestive shows on network TV will have a similar impact on teens.

Note it is a comprehensive sex ed proponent who downplays the results. Now why is that?

Groundbreaking research suggests that pregnancy rates are much higher among teens who watch a lot of TV with sexual dialogue and behaviour compared with those who have tamer viewing tastes.

Sex and the City was one of the shows used in the research.

The new study is the first to link those viewing habits with teen pregnancy, said lead author Anita Chandra, a Rand Corp. behavioural scientist.

Teens who watched the raciest shows were twice as likely to become pregnant over the next 3 years as those who watched few such programs....

Well, this is reassuring. For all his God talk, Obama lost ground. According to Yahoo News, November 1:

Barack Obama has courted white weekly churchgoers as avidly as any Republican-leaning bloc of voters, though it now appears his efforts may fall flat on Election Day.

The Gallup Poll now shows Obama backed by 28% of white voters who attend church at least once a week - a group that makes up a roughly a third of all voters - which would be no improvement from the 29% of these voters who, according to exit polls, backed Democrats John Kerry and Al Gore in the previous two presidential elections....

The further Barack Obama edges ahead of John McCain in the million and one polls that are coming out the more pernicious the nagging fear becomes.

What if he loses?

Barely a left-wing pundit, barely an Oscar-nominated softie can sleep a wink these days for fear of the race riots and international humiliation that will ensue should "The One" be defeated on Tuesday.

They think he's going to win, of course, but their hearts still bear the scars of 2000 and 2004.

The comedian Chris Rock is at least capable of joking about it. "If Obama loses?" he replied to a question from talk show host Bill Maher. "Well, that Wednesday after election day, anybody ... any activity in your life that involves black people, it's not going to get done. If you're at the airport? No one's going to get your bags."

But for others, the dread is nameless and paralysing. Erica Jong, author of the 1970s feminist bible Fear of Flying, has developed a new complex in recent weeks - the fear of an Obama flogging.

"If Obama loses it will spark the second American Civil War. Blood will run in the streets, believe me," she told the Italian newspaper Corriere della Sera last week. "My back is also suffering from spasms, so much so that I had to see an acupuncturist and get prescriptions for Valium.

"Yesterday, Jane Fonda sent me an email to tell me that she cried all night and can't cure her ailing back for all the stress that has reduced her to a bundle of nerves."...

When last I left Chris Crocker, it was with admitted outbursts of laughter after watching his "Leave Britney alone!" YouTube video (WARNING, foul language), a must see for those interested in keeping tabs on our crazy culture.

I do feel bad for the mixed up gay kid, but I had no laughs for Crocker's latest video endorsing Obama for president. In it Crocker makes offensive statements against pro-lifers and against children whose fathers are rapists (WARNING, foul language)...

A McCain supporter who took a cue from Jerry Seinfeld's Soup Nazi, refused treats this Halloween to children of Obama supporters...

Gotta say that had I determined to politicize Halloween, I would have just handed out McCain literature with treats, not withheld treats from innocent children.

That said, Obama is all for killing children before they ever see their first Halloween, so why are his supporters wound up about an anti-Obama supporter denying their born kids a little candy?

Back in January CO pro-lifers warned Weitz Company executives if they persisted with helping Planned Parenthood of the Rocky Mountains build its mega-abortion mill, pro-lifers would place them on permanent collaborators status and picket them until the mill they helped construct stopped aborting children.

Weitz refused to stop, the mill was completed in July, and the rest of the story began.

I mentioned in my previous post about leafletting church parking lots. The nonpartisan flyers are available at that post to download, print, and distribute. We should all do this at our churches tomorrow. Another spot I like to leaflet is school parking lots on Sunday mornings. Lots of small churches meet there.

Get involved this weekend. Drudge reported last night McCain has now taken the lead according to Zogby. We cannot let Barack Obama take office. GET OUT THE PRO-LIFE VOTE!

Deal Hudson of Inside Catholic reported yesterday that the pro-abortion group Catholics United has sent out an email blast calling on its readers to stop pro-lifers from distributing voter guides before and after Mass this weekend as well as leafletting cars. CU is instead encouraging them to distribute liberal voter guides.

Fr. Frank Pavone of Priests for Life shot a response letter to CU, warning that pro-lifers are prepared to sue, because such circumvention would be a constitutional violation.

Anne Henderstott has a piece in Public Discourse about how dangerous it is to be a black child in the womb:

Currently, white women's rates of abortion have declined to 10.5 abortions per 1,000 women while black women's rates are an alarming 50 abortions per 1,000 black women. Put in terms of actual pregnancies, the figures are shocking: Nearly half of all African American pregnancies end in abortion.....

The black community has already been changed by abortion. At a time when 50% of their unborn children are aborted, many within the black community are beginning to recognize that their community has been devastated by abortion. Someday it is possible that their pro-choice political representatives will recognize this too.
