Up on Drudge's front page now is a link to the following EXCELLENT AP story (as well as a link to a LifeSiteNews.com story on the civil lawsuit)...

Eighteen and pregnant, Sycloria Williams went to an abortion clinic outside Miami and paid $1,200 for Dr. Pierre Jean-Jacque Renelique to terminate her 23-week pregnancy.

Three days later, she sat in a reclining chair, medicated to dilate her cervix and otherwise get her ready for the procedure.

Only Renelique didn't arrive in time. According to Williams and the FL Department of Health, she went into labor and delivered a live baby girl.

What Williams and the Health Department say happened next has shocked people on both sides of the abortion debate: One of the clinic's owners, who has no medical license, cut the infant's umbilical cord. Williams says the woman placed the baby in a plastic biohazard bag and threw it out.

Police recovered the decomposing remains in a cardboard box a week later after getting anonymous tips.

"I don't care what your politics are, what your morals are, this should not be happening in our community," said Tom Pennekamp, a Miami attorney representing Williams in her lawsuit against Renelique (ren-uh-LEEK') and the clinic owners.

The state Board of Medicine is to hear Renelique's case in Tampa on Friday and determine whether to strip his license. The state attorney's homicide division is investigating, though no charges have been filed. Terry Chavez, a spokeswoman with the Miami-Dade County State Attorney's Office, said this week that prosecutors were nearing a decision.

Renelique's attorney, Joseph Harrison, called the allegations at best "misguided and incomplete" in an e-mail to The Associated Press. He didn't provide details.

The case has riled the anti-abortion community, which contends the clinic's actions constitute murder.

"The baby was just treated as a piece of garbage," said Tom Brejcha, president of The Thomas More Society, a law firm that is also representing Williams. "People all over the country are just aghast."

Even those who support abortion rights are concerned about the allegations.

"It really disturbed me," said Joanne Sterner, president of the Broward County chapter of the National Organization for Women, after reviewing the administrative complaint against Renelique. "I know that there are clinics out there like this. And I hope that we can keep (women) from going to these types of clinics."

According to state records, Renelique received his medical training at the State University of Haiti. In 1991, he completed a four-year residency in obstetrics and gynecology at Interfaith Medical Center in New York.

New York records show that Renelique has made at least five medical malpractice payments in the past decade, the circumstances of which were not detailed in the filings.

Several attempts to reach Renelique were unsuccessful. Some of his office numbers were disconnected, no home number could be found and he did not return messages left with his attorney.

Williams struggled with the decision to have an abortion, Pennekamp said. She declined an interview request made through him.

She concluded she didn't have the resources or maturity to raise a child, he said, and went to the Miramar Women's Center on July 17, 2006. Sonograms indicated she was 23 weeks pregnant, according to the Department of Health. She met Renelique at a second clinic two days later.

Renelique gave Williams laminaria, a drug that dilates the cervix, and prescribed three other medications, according to the administrative complaint filed by the Health Department. She was told to go to yet another clinic, A Gyn Diagnostic Center in Hialeah, where the procedure would be performed the next day, on July 20, 2006.

Williams arrived in the morning and was given more medication.

The Department of Health account continues as follows: Just before noon she began to feel ill. The clinic contacted Renelique. Two hours later, he still hadn't shown up. Williams went into labor and delivered the baby.

"She came face to face with a human being," Pennekamp said. "And that changed everything."

The complaint says one of the clinic owners, Belkis Gonzalez came in and cut the umbilical cord with scissors, then placed the baby in a plastic bag, and the bag in a trash can.

Williams' lawsuit offers a cruder account: She says Gonzalez knocked the baby off the recliner chair where she had given birth, onto the floor. The baby's umbilical cord was not clamped, allowing her to bleed out. Gonzalez scooped the baby, placenta and afterbirth into a red plastic biohazard bag and threw it out.

No working telephone number could be found for Gonzalez, and an attorney who has represented the clinic in the past did not return a message.

At 23 weeks, an otherwise healthy fetus would have a slim but legitimate chance of survival. Quadruplets born at 23 weeks last year at The Nebraska Medical Center survived.

An autopsy determined Williams' baby - she named her Shanice - had filled her lungs with air, meaning she had been born alive, according to the Department of Health. The cause of death was listed as extreme prematurity.

The Department of Health believes Renelique committed malpractice by failing to ensure that licensed personnel would be present when Williams was there, among other missteps.

The department wants the Board of Medicine, a separate agency, to permanently revoke Renelique's license, among other penalties. His license is currently restricted, permitting him to only perform abortions when another licensed physician is present and can review his medical records.

Should prosecutors file murder charges, they'd have to prove the baby was born alive, said Robert Batey, a professor of criminal law at Stetson University College of Law in Gulfport. The defense might contend that the child would have died anyway, but most courts would not allow that argument, he said.

"Hastening the death of an individual who is terminally ill is still considered causing the death of that individual," Batey said. "And I think a court would rule similarly in this type of case."

Comments:

I just read this on Fox; very saddening.

Although this story is so sad, why shouldn't the pro-aborts be just as aghast at the reality that babies just like this little one, alive and snuggled safely in their mothers' wombs are being brutally murdered in utero then tossed in the garbage in the same manner.

The whole thing is just sickening and disgusting.

I can't remember where I recently read that (maybe it was here) that Obama got 54% of the Catholic vote. This group consisting of pro-lifers actually came out with a statement that had believed this idioso was going to compromise with towards a pro-life agenda.

They were shocked to quickly find out he had no intention of compromise.

Is there any hope???

These are a symptom of wickedness. The only thing they see wrong with this is that it is exposed and had light shown on it. Looks like the autopsy demonstrates that it was born alive. The could have would have died any way defense is speculation.

"Williams struggled with the decision to have an abortion," Pennekamp said.

But the decision to hump the nameless sperm shooter seems to have come easily enough. The current culture make remaning celibate or chaste the real STRUGGLE.

Look, such hatred of human life/human dignity, made in the image and likeness of God is diabolical. Such people who inflict their diabolical influence on the innocent and desperate are afflicted with the plague of the culture of death:

xppc - Looks like the autopsy demonstrates that it was born alive.

I know you're pro-life, and I'm trying to bring this up gently - we need to be respectful about how we describe those who are killed by abortion. In this case, her name is Shanice, and she was born alive.

The culture of death is pervasive. We need to be on our guard not to use their mindset, but instead seek a true respect for all mankind. Thanks.

I agree to above. Lovely baby Shanice alive and happily kicking in the womb days before the abortion. She met her death as a victim soul: her story will convert hearts. And we have to have love and charity for the young mother who made a regretably tragic "choice" so many like her out there. I'm guessing the clinic staff never informed her fully: never told her such that her baby could be born alive and has a beating heart and that she could regret her decision of abortion forever....

Recently was the Biblical 40th aniversary of the prophetic encyclical of Pope Paul VI on human life (Humanae Vitae). Free on the web, and needs
attention as "Licitness of recourse to the infecund periods" or NFP. Near zero divorces and zero abortions for NFP couples. It's the ideal way for pro-life, to halt the holocaust.

Amen, Edward. Earth shattering encyclical.

I love how these girls feel they are mature enough to have sex, but when it comes to having a baby, they don't have the means or maturity. Abortion is murder and should be treated as such and the B@stard that murdered this child should be in jail for the rest of his life and let the criminals deal with him. For all those who voted for Obama.....congratulations, this is what we will have to deal with for the next four years....murder on demand!

God Bless the little babies!

I think we Catholics should record a second Great Schism as happening in 1968 along with Pope Paul VI's answer to the sixties, Humane Vitae.

After all, that was when about half of the American Catholics decided that the pope was just some old man with stupid opinions. It's just unfortunate that they chose to keep calling themselves Catholic and attending the Mass.

Y'all, please pray for Sycloria. One of the hardest things to do is come forward and watch Christians rip your soul to shreds.

Let's lift this young woman up in prayer and support her efforts to expose some of what we abhor.

It will be rewarded.

This is so sad ... I pray that the jurisdiction can DO something about this travesty.
God bless the mother(almost) that came forward - may it SOBER her regarding any other relations outside of marriage and make her THINK before aborting anyone else from her womb.

Excuse the following sarcasm, I need to vent:
If this clinic owner Belkis Gonzalez loses his business license then she make an even bigger stride toward philanthropy and volunteer to work as a escort at a Planned Parenthood abortuary. This mistress of death must enjoy killing and thats why she opened the slaughterhouse.

Fr. Tom Eutenauer gave a presentation in Washington in which Fr. Eutenauer, an exorcist, observed the demon of abortion has entered our culture.

Stories like this which are not reported on NBC, CBS, ABC, CNN or FOX News to shock the conscience of this country reveals just how dead the conscience of this country is.

Why isn't HOUSE doing episodes on this shocking abomination? Why isn't BOSTON LEGAL commissioning screen writers to capitalize on the obvious? Why isn't Congress immediately commissioning a hearing before the Judiciary on a legal system which looks the other way? Why aren't local, county, state and federal officials representing the citizens in the jurisdiction where this abomination occurred screeching all over the front pages of every daily in the region demanding justice? Why aren't preachers crying for justice for this poor family from every pulpit in every parish in the deanery where this abomination took place?

The devil is coward if just people just say yes to truth!

What a heinous murder of an innocent. They said years ago that america was headed down the road to a time when legalized abortion would lead to euthanasia. We have slid down "the slippery slope". There is no respect for life. Even in this article the baby girl that was murdered was referred to as "it". Barack Obama is actively pushing society down the slippery slope. He is morally bankrupt. Obama is the leader of the culture of death. One not far behind him is Hillary Clinton and the entire Democratic National Committee with their platform of supporting the culture of death. There is no rationale for Miami-Dade State Attorney's officials to still be in the process of deciding whether this was murder. It WAS! Abortion is a disgraceful blot on the soul of our nation. It MUST be stopped NOW! It's disgusting!

Posted by: Robert Laity at February 6, 2009 3:30 AM

A question aside: The article says that the babies remains were found a week later in a cardboard box. Earlier saying the baby was placed in a bio-hazard bag.How did the baby end up in a cardboard box? Was the bio-hazard bag placed in a cardboard box or was the baby taken out of the Bio-hazard bag and placed in a cardboard box? It is a violation of public health standards to keep bio-hazardous material for such a long period of time without properly disposing of it by incineration. The clinic should be cited for that amongst malpractice and murder charges. CLOSE this clinic down!

I'm with Angele: "Y'all, please pray for Sycloria. One of the hardest things to do is come forward and watch Christians rip your soul to shreds. Let's lift this young woman up in prayer and support her efforts to expose some of what we abhor."

Part of the normal psychology of pregnancy is to be in total denial about being pregnant, to need time to bond with the baby -- indeed even to grasp the reality of his existence, to be plagued with ambivalence, and even to want to go back to the un-pregnant state so as to avoid the transition to motherhood. Abortion facilities are expert at using the normal psychology of pregnancy to sell abortion, just like any salesperson uses psychology. People who are stressed and/or in a major life transition are very vulnerable to well-polished sales pitches -- which is why insurance salesmen swoop in on newlyweds and new parents.

To make it even harder for the woman, we live in a society that treats this sales pitch as if it's "education" and "counseling" designed not to sell her a "service", but to "help her make an informed choice".

Then the prolifers hold the mother accountable for "murder" when she gets sucked in by professionals who make their living by cashing in on pregnant women's unique vulnerability. It's a "blame the victim" mentality.

Yes, some women go in knowing it's a baby and flat out wanting it to die. Some go so far as to elevate it to a religious experience in freeing their "inner goddess" or as a human sacrifice to a goddess such as Kali or Artemis. But I dare say they're very much in the minority.

Something y'all need to keep in mind -- and to pass along when you encounter people discussing it after seeing it in the MSM -- is that this is an everyday occurrence.

The last time the CDC had anything to say about live births from abortions, they said that about 400 were reported to the CDC every year. Willard Cates of the CDC also said that this number was no doubt very much lower than the actual frequency of live births, because reporting such births was "like turning yourself in to the IRS for an audit."

So live births from abortions are literally an everyday occurrence. And nobody is keeping track of the fates of these babies.

Posted by: Christina at February 6, 2009 5:55 AM

Some one must bring criminal charges against this doctor and clinic, either locally or as a civil rights case. Then there must be a civil action taken. These things must be done NOW! It must be brought to the attention of all Americans, no, all human beings, that abortion is barbaric, no matter how it is done. I cry for that baby! Please, someone who has the power, strike at this most inhuman of all activities and strike now while even Pro-Death proponents are in shock!

Barack will not be moved by this event. Welcome to the Obama administration.

((((Christina))))

I can ALWAYS count on you to add something tremendously useful to most discussion related to abortion!

Thank you so much for all that you do.

Thank you for helping others wrap their heads around the factors (internal and external) that drive women to seek the "unchoice."

(as if escalating HCG levels weren't enough to contend with huh?)
