Overseas abortion funding least popular decision by Obama

mexico city 65.jpgUPDATE, 2/4, 11a: According to Family Research Council, Americans aren't the only ones who are unhappy with President Obama for overturning the Mexico City Policy, which kept international abortion groups from getting U.S. tax dollars. FRC reported yesterday:

Countries across Latin America have lashed out at the new White House for contaminating their laws with anti-life policies. Congresswoman Martha Lorena de Casco of Honduras said she felt "sorrow" that one of the President's first acts was to threaten her country's pro-life law. Representatives from Argentina, El Salvador, and other countries echoed de Casco encouraging Americans to follow their example and respect the right to life in national law.

As I've [Tony Perkins] said before, President Obama's election was the result of an economic mandate, not a social one. The further he deviates from that mandate, the more likely he is to lose it.

UPDATE, 2/3, 10:30a: The Republican National Coalition for Life has listed specific ways for pro-lifers to apply pressure in opposition to Obama's repeal of the Mexico City Policy, which received a 65% disapproval rating in the Gallup poll below...

Please contact your Member of Congress and U.S. Senators - Tell them:

  • You want them to codify the Mexico City policy.

  • You want them to deny taxpayer funds to international organizations and agencies that promote or perform abortions overseas so that it will not have to be reconsidered each year during the appropriations process.

  • You do not want to be forced into complicity with abortions through your tax dollars!

    From Gallup, February 2:

    Reads the story:

Obama's decision to reverse the prohibition on funding for overseas family-planning providers may be the least popular thing he has done so far. This was an executive order that forbade federal government money from going to overseas family-planning groups that provide abortions or offer abortion counseling. Fifty-eight percent of Americans disapprove of Obama's decision to lift this ban, while only 35% approve of it.

Pro-lifers looking for ways to combat President Obama on the life issue have been given their 1st task: publicize his overturn of the Mexico City Policy, which not only leaves conservatives cold but independents as well:

It's really too bad that there wasn't an action item in there that involved other funding foreign initiatives. It might give us a better idea of why the majority disapproved of funding overseas abortions. It could be due to opposition to sending funds out the country in general or opposition to abortion.

That's encouraging news. If a majority dont like that, its probably safe to say an even bigger majority would object to FOCA.

Looks like O's honeymoon is turning out to be short indeed.

One of my senators, Mel Martinez (R)Florida, introduced a bill to counter that Mexico City fiasco. Unfortunately, it didn't pass.

That's assuming they are against it because of abortion, as opposed to spending money on foreign aid Joanne................

Posted by: asitis at February 3, 2009 1:56 PM

How about going for the daily double?

Some Americans have ambivalence about abortion on demand but even more have no ambivalence about public funding for abortion on demand, domestically or abroad. They oppose it!

Silly, stingy, selfish americans, what are we to do with them?

    yor bro ken

whatitis asitis is a general agreement that most Americans (and foreigners) are against abortion personally and feel dirty funding other people doing it.

Posted by: truthseeker at February 4, 2009 12:52 AM

You can't say that for certain truthseeker. You could just as easily say the results of the poll indicate that Americans are stingy and selfish about giving their money to other countries... especially at a time like this. Nothing to do with abortion.

Kind of makes me think of all the public outcry that Oprah spent so much of her money on a fancy school in Africa when our inner city schools need help.

Posted by: asitis at February 4, 2009 8:16 AM

No asitis, you are just in denial. Even all the biggest supports of "choice to kill" (Hillary, Barack, Edwards, etc..etc..) make a point of stating their "personal"opposition to abortion when they state their support of a woman's right to choose to commit abortion.

Posted by: truthseeker at February 4, 2009 9:48 AM

Actually I heard Hillary and Edwards (and virtually all the pro-choice Democrats) say that. But I never actually heard Obama say that; the closest he came is that it is a morally wrenching decision.

Posted by: truthseeker at February 4, 2009 10:20 AM

I'd wager the Obama's have elective abortion in their past. I think a presidential candidate should be open to these kinds of questions or not run for office.

Posted by: truthseeker at February 4, 2009 10:24 AM

you'd probably wager I have it in my past too.

    Wrong again!

Posted by: asitis at February 4, 2009 10:32 AM

No I wouldn't because you have told me that you have never committed abortion. If I find you practice deceit then the odds would likely shift.

Posted by: truthseeker at February 4, 2009 11:11 AM

I like how the Dems always say we should respect others culture and laws (which the Repubs agree with) however, it's just them paying lip service to that ideal while they try to push through the liberal agenda.

Posted by: Kristen at February 4, 2009 11:14 AM

    Joanne,

I have to agree with you. I think the Great Father is overreaching. 65% of Americans opposed this specific policy, which is the financial support of abortion. Also "blue dog" Democrats in congress who could not support the spending bill because of contituent objections may not support FOCA for the same reason.
    I don't think its a given.

I just heard on the radio the Great Father and his wife bolted the White House for the day and visited an elementary school. Looks like the pressure is getting to him.

How reassuring. Just wait till he faces a real crisis.

even Playboy and Penthouse have their hands in Obama's regime with the appointment of David Odgen as Deputy Attorney General.
The dung heap in the White House is growing larger by the minute.

Posted by: toostunnedtolaugh at February 4, 2009 1:31 PM

    TSTL

What did you hear about Odgen? Is it all true?
If you heard what I heard, there was child porn involved, etc.

Posted by: Mary at February 4, 2009 2:41 PM

    yup you heard right Mary.
Ya know what I think: I think Obama owes so many bottom feeders for supporting him financially that he has no choice but to make these kind of appointments.
I'm surprised he can sleep at night. And he's the father of two girls. For shame.

Posted by: toostunnedtolaugh at February 4, 2009 8:53 PM

    TSTL,

I heard that Odgen also opposed parental consent for a minor's abortion. So, are we to assume, since Obama supports FOCA and apparently Odgen, that Obama would have no qualms about a doctor he's never met and knows nothing about performing a surgical procedure on one of his minor daughters without his or his wife's knowledge or consent?
How would the Obamas feel about one of their minor daughters being transported across state lines for this procedure, also without their knowledge or consent?
Certainly what is good for everyone else's minor daughters is good enough for the Obamas'.

Well, maybe someone should ask him!
Or maybe Obama would be fine with his daughters appearing as centrefolds in Playboy or Penthouse some day.

"Or maybe Obama would be fine with his daughters appearing as centrefolds in Playboy or Penthouse some day."

Why not, as long as they aren't "punished with a baby".

King Barry is sinking like a Ba-Rock. He's only been in for two weeks but he and his cronies have already made so many mistakes. How many tax cheats does he intend to have in his cabinet? And how much pork does he want us to agree with under the guise of "stimulus"? Of course the pork is really just Barry's way of paying back all of the criminal organizations that helped him get elected. And now he's telling businessmen that they aren't allowed to make over $500K? Why doesn't he just buy them one way tickets to China while he's at it, because they're not going to stick around here with the government telling them how much money they can have.

It won't be long before Barry's approval rating falls below 50%. I look forward to that day. On that day, the media will declare that a majority of Americans are "racist" and "unpatriotic".

It's unbelievable how deluded you anti-choice people are about the Obama administration's reproductive choice policies and what they intend it intends to do in foreign countries.
You are totally misinformed ! Under Obama, the lives of many, many desperately poor women could be saved, unwanted pregnancies prevented, and general prosperity increased abroad.
The terribly misguided and perversely wrong-headed policies of the Bush administration greatly increased poverty and human misery in the poorest countries.

Posted by: Robert Berger at February 5, 2009 9:25 AM

    John Berger,

Please, some studies that show how the lives of women vastly improved and prosperity abounded in foreign countries under eight years of Clinton, during which time the Mexico City policy had been overturned.
Please show studies as to how this completely turned around under Bush when the Mexico City Policy was reinstated.
Also, did you not read Jill's post? 65% of Americans oppose this and Latin American countries don't sound enthralled either.
Well, those people never knows what's best for them anyway, do they RB?

Posted by: Mary at February 5, 2009 10:13 AM

    John Leewandowski,

What's scary is that his ineptness does not go unnoticed by terrorist, tyrants, and despots. These people are evil, but they are most certainly not stupid.

Let's see, Iran will talk to him when he meets THEIR conditions. (Note to President Obama: Middle East cultures view their opponent's desire to negotiate and meet without conditions as weakness. You gave the Iranians the upper hand).

North Korean despot Kim Il Jong is preparing to test fire a rocket that could hit the US.

The Taliban, known for splashing acid in the faces of little schoolgirls and burning down schools, issued a statement commending the closing of Guantanamo. No doubt a few of their acid splashing buddies are in there, being horribly abused.

Even our Indian friends have warned Obama he risks "barking up the wrong tree" if he tries brokering a settlement between India and Pakistan over Kashmir. The Annointed One can't make us all love one another?

    Shades of Neville Chamberlain.

Posted by: Mary at February 5, 2009 10:31 AM

    TSTL and JL,

Correct me if I'm wrong but isn't transporting a child across state lines without parental knowledge or consent a federal offense under any other circumstances than abortion? I believe its called kidnapping.

Posted by: Mary at February 5, 2009 10:33 AM

You're right, Mary. We can be sure that our enemies - and they are our enemies - are paying a great deal of attention to Obama's endless foolishness.

Plus I especially like how Obama wants to be be best friends with our enemies, but loves sticking his finger in the eye of the Republicans. Did you see him talking to the Democrats this evening? He pretty much dismissed all concerns about the billions of dollars of pork in the "stimulus" bill as nonsense and "cable chatter". Yeah, that's going to unite us, alright.

Posted by: John Lewandowski at February 5, 2009 9:00 PM

    JL,

I'm convinced he desperately wants Republican support because if this bill is a colossol failure, which it will be, he can claim Republicans are as responsible.
This whole situation is such a debacle. Cabinet appointees who don't pay taxes, conflicts of interests, and now some porn lawyer in under the AG.

I understand Nancy(Mussolini) Pelosi completely shut out Republicans from having any say in this. I think ultimately she did the Republicans a huge favor.

Also, Michigan Democrat Senator Debbie Stabenow plans to hold hearings on the Fairness Doctrine, or as she calls it accountability in radio. There must be "balance". An attempt to silence the opposition perhaps?

Hey Debbie, in case you didn't notice, the state you represent is going down a rathole.

check out your 9:30 p.m. post. Times have changed, your old way of viewing things is not productive. Let's pull together as Americans and fix this mess.

As for John, I'll censor my opinion so as to avoid a banning.

Posted by: Hal at February 6, 2009 10:27 AM

    Hal,

Again, where does this indicate any hatred of America?

Pull together? Tell that to people like Senator Stabenow who has apparently never heard of Freedom of Speech. Also, she would do well to concentrate on the state of Michigan which is in the process of going down the crapper.

Did I invent the cabinet nominees who don't pay taxes and Odgen, who represented the porn industry?

Don't blame the messengers Hal, whether its John or me.

Nancy Pelosi excluded Republicans from having any say in this spending bill. That's bipartisanship? The American Way? Sounds a little dictatorial to me.
