'57 Notre Dame grad Phil Donohue: 9 reasons (other than abortion) to invite Obama

I saw this interview on Fox the other day and am so glad someone put it on YouTube.

phil donohue.jpgI can't tell you how perfectly I thought our side, Fr. Jonathan Morris and Martha MacCallum, argued against admittedly fallen liberal Catholic Phil Donohue. This was a grand debate where the liberal clock was cleaned.

Fr. Morris employed wonderful skill against Donohue, who threw 9 pieces of mud against the wall to try to move the discussion away from abortion and human embryo experimentation - including Catholic opposition to condoms, a Holocaust denying priest, the Iraq and Afghanistan wars, the Catholic Church's history of anti-semitism, George Bush, the lack of priests and nuns, and dropping church attendance....

My Mom told me Rush spoke on his show Friday about President Abortion's votes against Born Alive while state senator in conjunction with Notre Dame inviting him to speak at its commencement.

Thankfully, reader Jeff G. sent me the transcript. Rush got the concept right, although Obama voted 4x against Born Alive, not 3...

The Most Anti-Life President in U.S. History to Speak at Notre Dame

    March 27, 2009

    BEGIN TRANSCRIPT

RUSH: This Notre Dame business, I have to admit that I'm perplexed. Notre Dame is what? Notre Dame is the only university that I know of that has a giant mosaic of Jesus overlooking the football field, with arms up-spread as though Jesus is signaling touchdown. That's why they call it Touchdown Jesus at Notre Dame. They're a Catholic school....

  • Harry Reid and his staff might want to confer about Reid's position on the abortion issue. According to John McCormack, they don't seem to be on the right page unless the term "pro-life" is completely bereft of meaning.

  • Wesley Smith notes legislation in CA which could force medical personnel to share information with patients regarding abortion:
...SB 374 in CA...would make it a crime not to provide patients with information about the legality or availability of abortion and... could also be grounds for stripping the doctor or nurse practitioner of their license to practice. Worse, if the professional has a conscience objection, he or she must still participate in ensuring that the patient receives detailed information about deciding whether or not to have an abortion....

    M. Susan Pine, president of FACE Life, reported that pro-lifers at Mary Mother of Light Maronite Catholic Church in Lake Worth, FL, have just replaced - for the 3rd time - a pro-life banner facing the Planned Parenthood next door.

Susan reported the others were all stolen, by whom I wonder? Of course, MSM doesn't report these sorts of pro-abort malfeasance

But this sign is bigger and more securely attached. "If they steal this one it will require a pick-up truck!" reported Susan.

    Weekend question

weekend question.jpgI received this message from E. D. on Facebook:

A story for you, because you inspired me to it.

I work in a call center for prescription meds. A woman called thinking we were her health care, and she asked if abortions are covered.

I didn't tell her we were not the right company, I just said, "I'll take your baby."

    She said, "What?"

"I'll take your baby and adopt it for my own, please don't kill your daughter."

She got mad and said,"Lady, I don't need no preachin'. Just give me the information."

So I said, "Well, you'll have to call a different number," and then I gave her the number of the local Care Net crisis pregnancy center.

I figure if Rahab was honored for lying to save the Israelite spies in Jericho, then I can take liberties with the truth to save a life, too.

    E. D. is right. Throughout the Bible people were blessed for lying if to save lies. There was the aforementioned Rahab; there were the Israelite midwives; there was Jonathan and Michal who lied to their father and king, Saul, to save David's life; and there were the wise men, who God Himself told to disobey King Herod and leave town without saying where baby Jesus was.

Do you agree or disagree with pro-life tactics such as E. D. described?

    Epilogue: Tiller found not guilty

UPDATE, 3/28, 10:15a: Although written a few hours before the Tiller verdict, this post by National Review Online's Denis Boyles in The Corner, which should be read in its entirety, sums up what happened:

I've spoken to several people who are very close to this case, and the expectation is that Tiller will be acquitted.

    epilogue.jpg

The state's lackadaisal case, one knowledgeable observer said, was "embarrassing." The state assigned a single prosecutor to the case. Tiller has a 5-member team, including a former US Attorney. The state called one witness - Kristin Neuhaus, the doctor who signed off on Tiller's near-birth abortions. She was given immunity by [pro-abortion Attorney General Steve] Six and, not surprisingly, was an extremely hostile witness....

    Modifying the Woman's Right-to-Know Act

SB 238 modifies the Woman's Right-to-Know Act by requiring physicians who utilize sonogram equipment in connection with an abortion procedure to inform the woman that she has the right to view the ultrasound image. It also requires physicians who utilize heart monitor equipment in connection with an abortion procedure to inform the woman she has the right to hear the fetal heartbeat. Finally, SB 238 requires facilities in which abortions are performed to post certain notices, and requires KDHE to make information regarding fetal development available in printed, electronic and video format....

    Bill Maher mocks the disabled

All will recall President Abortion mocking Special Olympians on the Jay Leno show as being at bad at bowling as he is.

Then came Sarah Palin, with a future Special Olympian of her own, criticizing Obama for being so calloused.

This is where Raving Theist picked up the story:

... Palin condemned his "degrading remark about our world's most precious and unique people."

This observation was too much for talk show host Bill Maher, who led a panel consisting of Senator Bernie Sanders, actress Kerry Washington and New York Times reporter Andrew Ross Sorkin in a round of hooting, hand-clapping laughter at Palin's presumed stupidity. Things got a bit uncomfortable, however, when Maher specifically challenged Palin's description of the disabled:

    What a cruel man.

Hillary Clinton to receive Planned Parenthood's Margaret Sanger Award tonight

sanger clinton.jpgThe Washington Post reported today:

Recently back from Mexico, Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton... spends the day in TX.....
In the evening, Clinton attends a gala in Houston to receive the Margaret Sanger Award from the Planned Parenthood Federation of America for her advocacy of "women's health and rights throughout her public service career."

    Added the National Journal:

HRC accepted the invite well before she became Sec/State, but her appearance is a stark reminder of the big role HRC has played in abortion-rights politics ... and the bigger role women played in her '08 campaign.

Can't respond to this any better than Family Research Council did last night:

Of course, the question remains whether this award is even an honor. If "no one is pro-abortion," as Barack Obama insists, then why agree to be celebrated by the number one supplier of abortion in America?...

Don't worry, AZ Planned Parenthood has investigated itself

When last we left Planned Parenthood of Arizona , Lila Rose and LiveActionFilms.org had released a 2nd video of employees at a 2nd and 3rd PP in the Grand Canyon state showing a willingness to cover-up underage rape.

The 1st video showing the 1st cover-up, released February 3, resulted in a whole bunch of nothing happening.

This likely had to do with the fact that AZ Attorney General Terry Goddard was coincidentally scheduled to give the keynote address at a PP event that night, obviously in the bag for the US's largest chain of chop shops.

The 2nd video released resulted in an interesting denial by Goddard to the Arizona Republic that his office was investigating PP despite a letter from the Pima Co. attorney to the contrary (click to enlarge)...

    pima co letter.jpg

Goddard must have decided not to worry because, as AR reported, PP AZ has conducted an investigation of itself, and things amiss are now fine...

Let's be realistic about Tiller verdict anticipated today

UPDATE, 12:35p: Troy Newman of Operation Rescue just texted the Tiller jury has gone into deliberation.
    _______________

Today, as a freak blizzard prepares to descend upon much of KS, a jury of 6 is anticipated to hand down a verdict of abortionist George Tiller on whether he sought a 2nd opinion for late-term abortions from a doctor with whom he had financial ties.

First, Jenn Giroux explained in Renew America today there are reasons to remain pessimistic, although Giroux closed her piece by saying Tiller's March 25 verbals slips on the stand may have turned around an anticipated bleak verdict for the good guys:

... [KS Gov. Kathleen] Sebelius['s]... hand-picked successor to [Attorney General Phill] Kline, Paul Morrison... filed the weakest charges possible, probably planning to plea Tiller out.... But before the plan was fully implemented, Morrison was forced to resign in scandal....

    sebelius six.jpg

Sebelius... picked Stephen Six [pictured left together] to fill out Morrison's term.

Six is a KS trial attorney who has not held any public position except one provided by Sebelius....

Six had his hands full. He had inherited Morrison's "technical" charges against Tiller (Morrison having rejected anything more serious)....

Sebelius confirmation hearings to begin March 31

I'm sure Sebelius' hearing dates were carefully planned not to compete with Tiller trial headlines. Nevertheless, try as Sebelius and the Obama peeps might to avoid visual reminders, here we are to stir them up.

I think the Tiller trial's closure will mesh nicely with the Sebelius hearings - seamless fodder to remind all how rabidly pro-abort Sebelius is.

So Leslie had been missing from the sidewalk counseling scene at the Rocky Mountain Planned Parenthood mega-abortion mill while in mourning, until this past Saturday when she ventured back. She described the following incident on her blog:

I'm not certain how long Ron has been an "escort" for evil, Planned Parenthood in Denver. But, I can say this, he has gone out of his way to be unkind to those who try to rescue those being unjustly led to the slaughter.

Medicine needs to embrace a brand of professionalism that demands less self-interest, not more. Conscientious objection makes sense with conscription, but it is worrisome when professionals who freely chose their field parse care and withhold information that patients need. As the gatekeepers to medicine, physicians and other health care providers have an obligation to choose specialties that are not moral minefields for them. UPDATE, 4:35p: Matt Abbott at RenewAmerica has posted a letter written from black priest and member of Notre Dame's Admissions Advisory Board, Fr. John Raphael, to Fr. Jenkins:

... I have spent 18 years working with blacks and whites, Protestants and Catholics, to bring more African Americans into the pro-life movement. During the last 2 months the Obama administration has already begun to aggressively roll back the gains made in defense of life over the course of the last 15 years....

    obama black baby.jpg

[T]he historical significance of the first African American president is emptied of its meaning if this same president refuses to embrace the rights of the unborn....

As an African American and a priest, as a principal of a Catholic high school and a member of the Admissions Advisory Board of the university, I cannot adequately express in words how deeply this action offends those who are committed to carrying out the task of Catholic education and witnessing to the Gospel of Life in the context of a Catholic school. Even if the university chooses to cooperate with certain policies of the president that are not contrary to the teaching of the faith, the conferral of this type of public honor is wholly gratuitous and incongruous with the mission of any Catholic institution....

Tiller trial Days 2 and 3 recap

See previous posts, "Tiller trial opens to abortionist fatigue," and "Tiller trial Day 1 recap."

Day 2 of the trial of KS abortionist George Tiller, accused of breaking KS law by getting a 2nd opinion for late-term abortions from an abortionist with whom he had financial ties, saw that abortionist, Ann Kristin Neuhaus, retake the stand.

ann kristin neuhaus.jpgIMO, the most interesting Neuhaus factoid was that she wore the same jacket as the previous day and looked "disheveled," according to Cheryl Sullenger of Operation Rescue, twittering from inside the courtroom. Tacky.

But maybe Neuhaus is just broke after several medicinal practitioner malfunctions. Despite her protests, prosecutor Barry Disney reminded the court Neuhaus has been disciplined by the KS Board of Healing Arts once for failing to keep proper records of controlled drugs dispensed and another time for failing to provide informed consent, failing to properly monitor aborting patients, and forcibly aborting a mother against her will - for which her license was revoked.

So Neuhaus had her license back but no patients when taking Tiller's gig to rubber stamp his post-viable abortions.

But enough about Neuhaus. On to Day 3 and Tiller's testimony. On the stand Tiller appeared zombielike. Perhaps he accidentally lobotomized himself when trying to suction brains out of a half-born baby....

A bill has passed in the OK Senate and is on its way to the floor of the House. It would...

... create the Use of Force for the Protection of the Unborn Act... [and] make it crystal clear that...women can use lethal force to protect the life of their child in those cases [of domestic violence].

National statistics show 240k pregnant women are victims of domestic violence each year, many suffering subsequent miscarriage. Under this legislation, a woman would be legally justified in using fatal force if she believed the attacker to be threatening her unborn child.

Catholics can...(a) write the president, Rev. John Jenkins, CSC but will get a very nice letter back.

They can (b) write the president of the US Conference of Catholic Bishops, Cardinal Francis George and they will get a very short, crisp letter back saying he does not have jurisdiction over Notre Dame, thank you and please pray for me as I pray for you as we pray for all etc.,etc., etc.

They can (c) write the bishop of Fort Wayne-South Bend, Bishop John Michael D'Arcy and ask him to pressure Notre Dame to change its mind. They will get a pro-forma letter back.

They can (d) make a list of the trustees of the university and write them, try to pressure them. Not very effective.

Finally, by organizing a group of alumni they can write to and visit the bishop, Bishop D'Arcy and urge him to employ the "nuclear option."...

    WND%20logo.gif

I don't know who I'm madder at, USA Today or myself.

Last week USA Today editorial writer Louise Branson e-mailed me a request to:

... write a short piece for us about the regulation of fertility clinics in the aftermath of the octuplets scandal, and praising the proposed GA legislation as the standard that should be set nationwide. The piece would need to be around 350 words. It would be an opposing view to our editorial that would warn against the kind of regulation that brings anti-abortion politics into the issue.

"Absolutely," I responded. With a pro-abortion audience in mind, I wrote a piece explaining the harm of egg harvesting to women, the vast number of human embryos killed throughout the in vitro fertilization process, and how human embryo research proponents use the "leftover" embryos excuse to push their agenda. I closed by describing common sense regulations.

    I received this response:

Sorry to be a pain, but could I get you to re-do it a bit.... We were hoping to see a piece that would... say the best way to prevent another Suleman case would be to limit the number of embryos that could be implanted and also define an embryo as a person.... We would be less interested in all the medical details as our debate is on how best to regulate fertility clinics.

I was taken aback. USA Today was telling me how and what to write? I responded...

UPDATE, 3p: The bishop of the Notre Dame's Diocese, Fr. John D'Arcy, has announced he will NOT attend the commencement:

On Friday, March 21, Father John Jenkins, CSC, phoned to inform me that President Obama had accepted his invitation to speak to the graduating class at Notre Dame and receive an honorary degree. We spoke shortly before the announcement was made public at the White House press briefing. It was the first time that I had been informed that Notre Dame had issued this invitation.

President Obama has recently reaffirmed, and has now placed in public policy, his long-stated unwillingness to hold human life as sacred. While claiming to separate politics from science, he has in fact separated science from ethics and has brought the American government, for the first time in history, into supporting direct destruction of innocent human life.

This will be the 25th Notre Dame graduation during my time as bishop. After much prayer, I have decided not to attend the graduation....

    Faith Hope

    by Bethany Kerr

faith hope 3.jpgbabyfaithhope.blogspot.com is a blog with an amazing testimony.

It is written by a 23-year-old, unmarried woman, Myah, who in her last year of university (with no maternity leave), found herself pregnant with a baby girl who was diagnosed with anencephaly, which is a birth defect considered to be "incompatible with life."

Myah was given the option to abort, but refused. She carried her baby to term, and miraculously, little Faith Hope has lived 32 days as of yesterday!

Here is Myah's testimony from her sidebar:

When I was 19 weeks pregnant, I was told my baby had no brain.... I was told my baby was only alive because she was attached to me but that she couldn't survive on her own. The doctor said I could continue the pregnancy safely, but my baby would die shortly after being born....

  • William McGurn has a column on Notre Dame inviting President Obama to be the school's commencement speaker:
In the end, the result is moral incoherence. It is an incoherence in which abortion-rights advocates have the most to gain, because it demoralizes those who support the cause of life while removing fears of even the slightest social sanction for those who do not. And it is an incoherence we see all across American Catholic life today....

See previous post, "Tiller trial opens today to abortionist fatigue."

tiller 6666.jpgYesterday the trial of late-term KS abortionist George Tiller opened.

Tiller is accused of 19 counts of violating KS law by seeking a mandated 2nd opinion for late-term abortions from someone with whom he had financial ties, Dr. Ann Kristin Neuhaus.

Yesterday on the stand Neuhaus came down with Hillary Clinton I Don't Seem to Recall Syndrome, even though the prosecution has granted her a wide swath of immunity.

Pro-life pastor begins 30 day jail sentence

I previously reported that pastor Walter Hoye had been handed a 30-day sentence for violating a new Oakland, CA, law creating a free speech buffer zone around abortion mills. Well, the sentence has begun. Reported the San Francisco Chronicle on March 21:

    pastor hoye.jpg

A pastor at a Berkeley church was jailed Friday for 30 days after unsuccessfully arguing that an order requiring him to stay 100 yards away from an Oakland abortion clinic violates his right to free speech.

Walter Hoye, 52, of Union City was the first person convicted under an Oakland ordinance barring protesters from coming within 8 feet of anyone entering an abortion clinic.

In February, Judge Stuart Hing of Alameda County Superior Court sentenced Hoye to three years' probation and 30 days in jail, and ordered him to pay $1,000....

Although neither side will discuss the evidence, the state is expected to contend that Tiller's relationship with Ann Kristin Neuhaus, the 2nd doctor who signed off on the 19 abortions in question, violated the physician independence provision. Each count carries a maximum penalty of as long as a year in prison and a $2,500 fine....

    Weekend question

weekend question.jpgWith news this week 2 more Planned Parenthoods have been added to the list of those covering up child rape comes this question from reader yor bro ken:

If a minor female is not mature enough to consent to sex with an adult male, how is she mature enough to consent to the elective surgery of abortion?

With additional news a lesbian who attempted forced insemination could be charged with attempted rape, yor bro ken asked a germane follow-up question:

Technically speaking, there are different classifications of rape. "Insertion" is not limited to a male body part but can be any object. So how is the adult abortionist's vaginal insertion of any instrument for abortion in the case of a minor girl, particularly without parental notification, not statutory rape or some other form of sexual assault?

Obama's home state poised to pass FOCA

UPDATE, 12:20p: Here's a list of organizations supporting IL's FOCA as well as politicians, including AG Lisa Madigan.

[HT: liberal water carrier Archpundit via Cal S.]
    _______________

UPDATE, 10:50a: A pro-life legislator makes a good point: The abortion industry would flock to IL if IL FOCA passes because they wouldn't have to have malpractice insurance.
    _______________

Well funded, well organized, Obama-inspired radical IL pro-abort politicians and groups have reintroduced the state version of the Freedom of Choice Act.

While IL is already the abortion capital of the Midwest, with no enforceable law stopping it (including the 14-year-old IL Parental Notice Act, still stuck in court), and IL taxpayers already fund Medicaid abortions, IL's FOCA would do additional harm to mothers and children in the Prairie State as well as create an opening for other states to pass their own FOCAs.

Just one unbelievable component: IL's FOCA would allow nonphysicians to commit abortions and disallow civil lawsuits or criminal penalties for negligence or malpractice for abortions committed in "good faith," i.e., "I didn't mean to kill her."

    il foca.jpg

IL's FOCA had 42 House co-sponsors but is beginning to lose ground. 4 have removed themselves since last week. On the other hand the bill is on its 2nd reading now, so a vote is imminent....

Pedophile protecting Planned Parenthood caught again

Live Action Films today released video #4 in its Mona Lisa Project. First, let's review.

  • LAF released its 1st 2 videos (read here and here) exposing 2 IN PPs in December. These resulted in a sacrificial firing of 1 staffer, resignation of another but most importantly an attorney general investigation.

  • Video #3 showed a Tucson, PP aiding and abetting underage rape. PP of AZ said they would investigate. Big whoop. That was 6 weeks ago with silence since.

    WND%20logo.gif

In an otherwise good piece condemning President Obama for his executive order authorizing taxpayer funding for embryonic stem cell research last week, columnist Charles Krauthammer got one thing wrong:

Obama's address was morally unserious in the extreme. ... Yet ... he went on to declare that he would never open the door to the "use of cloning for human reproduction."

Does he not think that a cloned human would be of extraordinary scientific interest? And yet he banned it.

On the contrary, Obama did not....

Had Obama meant he blanketly opposed cloning, he would have said he opposed cloning, period. But he added that tag, "for human reproduction."...

I know Obama was parsing. While he says he opposes birthing human clones, Obama supports growing human clones to kill for research.

I know because I was in Springfield lobbying for the opposition in 2003 when Obama as IL state senator sponsored the Stem Cell Research Act along with five other hard-left liberals, and it included authorization to experimentally clone and kill....

Stanek op ed in USA Today

USA Today requested an op ed from me on the topic of in vitro fertilization regulation, and I was grateful for the opportunity. It is published today. Here's a snip:

The sensational story of Nadya Suleman giving birth to octuplets after in vitro fertilization of multiple embryos has spotlighted the need to regulate this Wild West of women's reproductive care.

    usa today logo 5.gif

Now is the time for pro-lifers to introduce legislation in their states regulating IVF and, with it, the creation and care of embryos....

A movement in this direction is gathering force. Louisiana has had a law since 1986 defining ex-utero embryos as human beings with inherent rights. Embryos cannot be destroyed for research. Court disputes over abandoned embryos must be decided in the best interest of the embryo. At least 5 other states are considering legislation defining an embryo as a person....

The Suleman case has exposed a need to regulate the IVF industry, the sooner the better. Currently sea turtles in the US enjoy more procreative protection than women and children.

And here is USA Today's editorial opposing IVF regulation.

  • Christianity Today has an editorial on Obama's supposed efforts to reduce abortion entitled, "Reducing Abortion for Real":
Obama is suggesting that abortion is a human need, which can be reduced but never eliminated. He is suggesting that we all will "support" (meaning affirm the decisions of) women and families, even if they abort a child. He assumes that we all can unite, as he said in his Roe anniversary comment, "to ensure that our daughters have the same rights and opportunities as our sons," suggesting that abortion is not just a need but also a right.

It's savvy rhetoric precisely because it is so subtle. It quietly isolates pro-life advocates (who now appear extremist) while appealing to those who are tired of the abortion debate (with calls to reduce abortion)....

  • KS Supreme Court leak?

Jury selection began yesterday for the long delayed trial of Wichita, KS, late-term abortionist George Tiller, accused of getting nonobjective 2nd opinions from business associate Dr. Ann Kristin Neuhaus.

The charges, though far less than they should have been, vindicate relentlessly maligned Phill Kline - again, who got the evidence.

Meanwhile Kline is being punished - again. Recall the words of rabid pro-abort, Sebelius-picked, KS Supreme Court Justice Carol Beier (former National Women's Law Center attorney), who strangely wrote Kline deserved "sanction by this court" when handing down a verdict clearing him of complaints filed by Planned Parenthood. She was really, really mad about that, as I previously indicated.

Beier got what she wanted when the Supreme court-appointed Disciplinary Board for Attorneys notified Kline and 2 subordinates in February regarding complaints of ethics violations, as yet unnamed.

This is where it gets interesting. Two reporters got tips about the secret ethics complaint, John Hanna of the Associated Press, and Ron Sylvester of the Wichita Eagle. Here's his story...

Bishop goes viral, tells Catholics to battle Obama

Well, this is great! Cardinal Francis George just released a YouTube video calling on Catholics to tell the Obama administration to back away from plans to stop enforcing the conscience rights of health care providers. "No government should ever come between a person and God," he said.

The Cardinal made a great point. We support conscientious objection to fighting in wars, and we support doctors to conscientiously object to administering the death penalty. ''Why shouldn't our government and our legal system permit conscientious objection to a morally bad action, the killing of babies in their mother's womb," said the Cardinal. ".... No one should be forced by the government to act as though he or she was blind to this reality."

Good for him and the USCCB.

    Alfred Kinsey: sexual psychopath

Dr. Judith Reisman, expert on Alfred Kinsey, the "father" of the American sexual revolution, has a new piece in Salvo magazine:

    kinsey 2.gif

... [W]hen Al Kinsey's Sexual Behavior in the Human Male (1948) hit the nation, it did not just cause a sexual revolution, it caused a sex science revolution.

Kinsey's sex "findings" displaced the common law and Judeo-Christian theories of human sexuality, which had dictated our conduct, culture, and sex-crime penalties. The ideals of delayed rewards, complete abstinence before and fidelity within marriage, said Kinsey, were scientifically false, constraining, repressing, and, (most condemnatory), "hypocritical."

The test of a good scientific theory is its predictability. Kinsey predicted that when people believed his theories and data, divorce, venereal disease, "illegitimacy," sex crimes, and all sexual dysfunctions would decrease. You many have noticed that Kinsey's predictions didn't quite pan out. The science was bad....

Bill Clinton to Gupta on CNN: Ok to research embryos if they're not fertilized

But this stem cell research, if the stem cells are frozen embryonic stem cells, if they are never going to be used to be fertilized, to bring a life into being, then I think making them available for medical research is the pro-life position and I honestly don't understand - I would understand it if we were going and raiding stem cell banks, where these stem cells were going to be used to actually fertilize eggs and have babies.

A couple commenters thought Clinton meant to say "implanted," but never mind the fact he said "fertilized" 6x, the above interview makes clear he meant "fertilized," which he defined as "to bring a life into being."...

RNC Chair Michael Steele: Abortion is "individual choice"

Thumbnail image for steele.jpgUPDATE, 3/12, 9:45p: The Steele abortion flap has grown throughout the day.

For conservatives, Steele is becoming the focus of pent up wrath toward Republicans who tell pro-lifers what they want to hear to their face but then melt on the pro-life issue when in a different crowd or when it's time to vote. Wrote Tony Perkins of FRC in a press release this afternoon:

This only serves to reinforce the belief by many social conservatives that one major party is unfriendly while the other gives only lip service to core moral issues, which is why many have dropped their affiliation with the GOP. If such a visible Republican leader continues in this same vein I am sure the trend will continue. The prospects of more social conservatives leaving may excite the "big tenters," but that will only last until they find the Big Tent is empty.

Those were words to be taken seriously.

Meanwhile, the opening schism got lots of press. My Politico quote as well as quotes from other pro-lifers ended up on CNN and CBS as well as People for the American Way (two times) and even Celebrity Gossip Guide. All smell blood. Politico even did a follow-up story.

Claiming that opponents of embryonic stem cell research are the ones who are "willfully misrepresenting the facts" is rich coming from Kinsley who on a number of occasions has falsely claimed that Bush's policy on the federal funding of ESCR banned "almost all federal financing of embryonic-stem-cell research" and was a "near-ban on stem-cell research."...

Feminists dare to complain about breast cancer reporting bias?

Pro-abortion feminist journalist Miranda Spencer wrote a 2,600 word article for Fairness and Accuracy in Reporting in February complaining that MSM does not spotlight factors contributing to the "epidemic" of breast cancer enough.

miranda spencer.jpgSpencer, who supports giving US taxpayer money to international abortion groups as well as the United Nations Population Fund, which helps the Chinese government coerce women to abort, had a lot of nerve, particularly by naming her piece, "Overlooking evidence."

Of course Spencer refuses to acknowledge the obvious and proven link between abortion and breast cancer and instead blamed this "leading cause of death in women in their late 30s to early 50s" on the fact that The New York Times, et al, do not talk enough about the hazards of flame retardant clothing....

US News & World Report's ludicrous claim: Octomom is Yoest/Stanek's "poster girl"

Dan Gilgoff of US News & World Report wrote an insulting piece today, "Octo-Mom as a poster girl for opponents of embryonic stem cell research," a typical example of MSM spinning a story to fit the liberal agenda.

spin 2.gifGilgoff first quoted Americans United for Life prez Charmaine Yoest from a Fox interview to support his contention:

The last time Art and I debated just a few weeks ago we were talking about the octo-mom, where embryos were given the opportunity and they become babies. You have two options here: allow them to develop [to] become babies, or experiment and destroy them.

Yoest's point obviously was embryos grow into born babies if given the chance.

Then Gilgoff quoted me from a recent WND piece...

New Stanek WND column: "Killing Girls"

UPDATE, 3/12, 9:30p: LifeSiteNews.com has more insights on Killing Girls:

"Killing Girls has also been my most difficult film to produce, mainly because it was next to impossible to find finance," said Ireland-born producer and director David Kinsella. "Everybody was telling me that I could not show this or that! ... I was being suffocated by all the negative criticism towards our film. So I decided to make a film straight from my heart and soul and forget all the negative reactions.

"At times I felt totally helpless during the filming, the screaming from the hospital are tattooed on my soul, the sound of a baby crying during the abortion," he said. "I was totally shocked."...

Anna Sirota, script writer and narrator of Killing Girls, said she too was shocked "not just because this was so painful and cruel, but also because I could not understand how easy it is to give and to take lives, how mechanical the whole abortion process looks."

Sirota has given birth to one daughter and had four abortions.

"The project started to become an obsession. Maybe I was trying 'to excuse' away my sins... I still have no answers," she said.

    PJTV discusses the A-Word

Thumbnail image for PJTV175.gifSince reality gets in the way, let's instead watch a panel discussion hosted by Pajamas TV, a conservative online network of bloggers, at the Conservative Political Action Committee's Conservatism 2.0 Convention recently held in DC.

On the panel: DC Examiner columnist Scott Ott of ScrappleFace (news satire); John P. Avlon, Senior Fellow of the Manhattan Institute for Policy Research; libertarian law professor and blogger Glenn Reynolds of Instapundit.com; and his royal rapidness, comedian AlfonZo Rachel, of MachoSauceProductions.

Facilitator Bill Whittle asked the panelists (fast forward to 1:37:40) if abortion is a social choice, murder, or something in between. The video takes a moment to load.

Breaking news: Congress restores Planned Parenthood birth control subsidy

3/11, 12:15p: Contrary to what has been reported elsewhere, Congress yesterday did NOT sneak back into the stimulus package the universally scorned "birth control bailout" of expanded Medicaid funding for contraceptives to Planned Parenthood.

What Congress DID do yesterday was restore a loophole the Bush administration removed (which I've written on before, so PP will once again get to buy birth control pills from drug companies at discount prices and take advantage of higher income women by reselling them at high prices. For the past 2 years PP has been forced to pay the same for bc pills as everyone else.

  • Today is one of the least celebrated "holidays" in America. It's National Abortion Provider Appreciation Day. Only a few people will be celebrating. One of them is The Nation's Katha Politt

The New York Times fulfilled its duty a few days early by printing this puff piece on the graying of abortion providers, whose sole source seems to be the claims of abortion providers.

Another is former abortionist Suzanne Poppema, who has an RH Reality Check piece entitled, "Save the endangered abortion provider!"

We're still waiting for Hallmark to make us a special line of greeting cards, but the very existence of a day honoring abortion providers is a step in the right direction.
You'll be waiting for a long time. Imagine a card section for abortionists in the card shop next to Husband, Wife, Mother and Father. What would a form thank you card for an abortionist say?  "To the person who made me wait in a crowded room all day, charged me $400 and then saw me for a minute or so before vacuuming out my uterus, you're the best physician I've ever met.(Well, I guess we really didn't meet, did we?)"
  • Adam Keiper notes Obama's empty rhetoric about understanding the concerns of people opposed to killing embryos:
What room is there for ethics in President Obama's thinking? He says that he 'understand[s]' the concerns of opponents of this research, but this is the sort of empty and condescending acknowledgment of an opponent's views encouraged by the teachers of conflict resolution, a formulaic expression of the sort that careful listeners will frequently hear from our new president.

Neither the president's speech nor his executive order actually acknowledge what the ethical concerns are. He assures the nation that the research will proceed "responsibly" and that "the perils can be avoided," but from the point of view of opponents of this research, it is his policy itself that leads irresponsibly toward the peril of embryo exploitation and experimentation, toward accepting the destruction of one class of human beings for the benefit of another.

  • In more "Obama understanding" news, Wesley Smith notes how Obama also rescinded President Bush's order to fund research which attempted to find alternatives to methods of creating pluripotent stem cells without killing human embryos. This is really spiteful and there's just really no good reason for it:
I can think of only two reasons for this action, for which I saw no advocacy either in the election or during the first weeks of the Administration: First, vindictiveness against all things "Bush" or policies considered by the Left to be "pro life;" and second, a desire to get the public to see unborn human life as a mere corn crop ripe for the harvest.  So much for taking the politics out of science!

  • Australia has dropped a policy which mirrored the United States' Mexico City policy.

But Carhart forgot one thing, to get his occupancy permit.

This morning Donlan notified Bellevue building inspectors. I just called Steve Carmichael of the City Planning Dept. and asked if Carhart was shut down.

Bishop investigates Catholic hospital for induced labor abortions

About St. Joseph's Health Centre in London, Ontario, LifeSiteNews.com reported March 5:

Black church invites White Planned Parenthood

The ignorance of blacks - even black churches - to the eugenic underpinnings of Planned Parenthood could not be any more epitomized than as described in today's Virginian-Pilot:

At New Light Full Gospel Baptist Church, congregants' benchmark on most topics is "the Word," meaning the Bible.

But on a recent night, more than 50 New Light adults and teens opened up to words from an additional source - Planned Parenthood, on stopping teen pregnancy.

Among many faith-based groups, few organizations are less popular than Planned Parenthood, a provider of women's health services, sex education and abortions.

    rashti.jpg

Yet on this night, teen pregnancy was something Planned Parenthood speaker Margie Rashti [pictured left] and New Light members all agreed was troubling and preventable.

"We come together as a team, working to try to pass down wisdom to the young ladies and young men who are part of this pandemic we call teen pregnancy," Elder Frankie Fells said in his opening prayer....

Per MSM: Nadler/Boxer to introduce FOCA "sooner rather than later"

    Weekend Extra

Recalling recent liberal attempts to pooh-pooh pro-life concerns about the rise of the phoenix FOCA (Time magazine and Washington Post), Matthew Bowman wrote this news on the Fidelis blog March 6 with great wit:

    phoenix ashes.jpg

A mythical US Congressman from NY, Jerry "Loch Ness" Nadler, is going to reintroduce Barack Obama's "mythical" Freedom of Choice Act "sooner rather than later," according to his mythical spokesman Ilan "Sasquatch" Kayatsky. Senator "Bigfoot" Boxer is expected to follow suit-it's a mythical "priority" for them, and for their new President.

    Indeed, from STLToday.com, March 6:

The Freedom of Choice Act failed to get out of subcommittee in 2004, but its sponsor is poised to refile it now that former Senate co-sponsor Barack Obama occupies the Oval Office.

A spokesman for... Nadler... said the legislation "is among the congressman's priorities. We expect to reintroduce it sooner rather than later."...

Ilan Kayatsky, Nadler's spokesman, said he anticipates that the bill's other original sponsor, Sen. Barbara Boxer, D-CA, will introduce FOCA in the U.S. Senate. "We expect it to be more or less the same bill with some minor tweaks," Kayatsky said.

    Weekend question

weekend question.jpgPresident Obama announced plans March 6 to begin taxpayer funding of human embryo experimentation, bad enough.

The question remains, however, whether Obama will also lift the ban against creating embryos specifically for research, rather than relying on "leftover" embryos in fertility clinics. Some researchers want unfettered access to human embryo creation and destruction. From the Washington Post today:

"We're all waiting to see what the details of the policy will be," said George Daley, a leading stem cell researcher at Children's Hospital Boston. "If the policy were limited to lines exclusively from frozen embryos left over at IVF clinics, that would be a very restricted course and exclude some very important lines."

Do you think Obama will lift that ban as well?

FYI, several member of Congress spoke during a Stem Cell Special Order March 5 against embryonic stem cell research and for adult stem cell research. Watch video here.

Breaking news: Obama takes 1st step to stop enforcing healthcare provider conscience protections

Thumbnail image for breaking.jpgThis is absurd. Three federal laws have been on the books for decades protecting healthcare providers' right of conscience.

All President Bush did was enact enforcement measures. Read the 2nd paragraph below. In other words, protecting the conscience of heathcare workers not to abort, etc., "limits access to patient care." What else can the next step be but to remove protections?

    Benedict Brownback

I have one more post left in me to write about Senator Sam Brownback's endorsement of KS Gov. Kathleen Sebelius for HHS Secretary, and then I'll move on.

First, read today's "Brownback - Turncoat" by Fr. Tom Euteneuer of Human Life International. Here's an excerpt, but the entire piece is a must read:

Senator Brownback seems not to understand the Church's profoundly wounded heart with regard the slaughter of the innocents. The Church tells us never to participate in that slaughter, no matter what the cost; we do not give aid and comfort to the enemies of human life, we do not stand by while the innocent are being dragged off to a violent murder, and under no circumstances do we endorse the political aspirations of their executioners. Politicians who sell the lives of babies for political gains are the worst kind of turncoats....

Contrast that with this, sent yesterday...

Planned Parenthood's Cecile Richards pushes universal abortion care at Summit

Yesterday President Obama hosted a health care summit at the White House. It has already been noted no pro-life healthcare groups were invited.

wh health 2.jpgBut pro-abortion groups were present in abundance. Following is Planned Parenthood CEO Cecile Richards' statement.

Listen carefully. Richards wants universal health care because the "millions of women who come to us are primarily low income." PP's clientele keeps it from raising its prices, which have increased only slightly over the decades. PP needs government intervention to increase its profit. This is one of 2 reasons why PP wants mandated taxpayer coverage for all PP's services, including, of course, abortion.

(Richards also stated that within her 887 clinics 97% of services are for "preventative health," i.e., not abortion. I've previously explained how this largest abortion provider in the US skews stats. Interesting, btw, is the fact Cecile never mentioned the A-word in her statement.)...

    Free Coburn! II

free coburn2.jpgOur pro-abort friends at RH Reality Check were kind enough to upload this interview I saw on Fox with US Senator Tom Coburn on March 3 and hoped would end up on YouTube.

In the interview Coburn discussed not only the harm that would befall women if the US restored taxpayer funding to the United Nations Population Fund but also his response if, as a doctor, he were compelled to abort.

The latter is lately in the news since President Obama plans to lift enforcement of healthcare providers' conscience protections.

Coburn: I'll never do it. Never do it.

Megyn Kelly: You'd rather go to a jail cell.

    Coburn: You bet. Anytime.

    I love Tom Coburn!

Also see previous entry, Free Coburn!

    Chilling opening lines

Gary Bauer and Daniel Allott have coauthored an op ed piece in today's Washington Times that a Tweeter titled better than the WT: "26 years of pro-life policies undermined in 44 days under Obama's leadership."

A philosophical shift has taken place in the abortion rights movement. After confronting either a pro-life president or a pro-life majority in Congress for 26 of the last 28 years, abortion advocates have now secured sympathetic majorities in all three branches of government.

    big chill.gif

And change in government has brought change to a movement that's moved beyond working to secure a woman's right to choose abortion. Its new goal is much more audacious - to coerce others into violating their consciences and participating in the murder of innocent human life. It's a shift from merely being "pro-choice" to being "pro-abortion."

This fundamental shift is personified most vividly in President Barack Obama. And it is exemplified most strikingly in his ambition to enact policies that would force millions of pro-life Americans to pay for and perform abortions....

I don't become frightened, because my God is in control. But everyone better get clear quick that there are major pro-abortion government policy changes underway. One only has to refer as far back as today's White House Healthcare Summit to understand.

    [HT: Claude]

While we most certainly welcome the bringing of criminal charges against Ms. Gonzalez, whose abortion business represents nothing less than a serious public health hazard, we must express our grave disappointment, indeed our outrage, that no homicide charges have been brought on account of the wrongful death of this little girl.

Not only the coroner's report, but also eyewitness testimony, prove that this infant was born alive then brutally killed. That constitutes homicide under the law of FL and treating it as anything less than that ignores fundamental legal principles and offends simple human decency. We demand that Dade County's law enforcers add a homicide charge, or at least an attempted homicide charge, without any more delay.

    22Weeks wins Angel Award

Congratulations to Ángel Soto, writer and director of 22weeks, which just won its first award, a Silver Angel, "for excellence in production on a film with social impact," on the 2009 Angel Awards!

    22weeks silver angel.jpg

22weeks dvd.jpg22Weeks tells the true story of a young woman locked in the bathroom of an abortion clinic after her aborted baby was born alive in April 2005.

The case was never prosecuted, despite passage 3 years earlier of the Born Alive Infants Protection Act.

The film includes the reenactment of an actual 911 call.

... One beneficiary of Kathleen Sebelius' good cheer toward abortionists was Krishna Rajanna, who owned a Topeka chop shop.

After it was discovered he kept a filthy mill with evidentiary photographs of a dead mouse in the hall and aborted babies in the refrigerator, the latter which staffers said they saw Rajanna eating in soup, legislators introduced clinic regulation legislation. Sebelius vetoed that twice....

All this information and more is waiting in the wings for Sebelius' confirmation hearing, but will it ever see the light of day?

Likely not, thanks to KS Senators Sam Brownback and Pat Roberts....

But here is where Brownback in particular made a common pro-life politician's mistake, which too many pro-lifers accept: Casting dreams for what he could do for us tomorrow, Brownback didn't do the right thing today.

I don't care what pro-life politicians promise they will do for me tomorrow. Tomorrow never comes. I only care what they do for me today. In fact, they're only where they are today because they cast dreams in a previous campaign to do something for me today....

Now to the damage abortion loving Sebelius could do as HHS secretary....

    Yet another toilet abortion attempt

I'm thinking there needs to be a new official abortion classification: Toilet Abortions. Recall I reported one just the other day as well as closely related Shower Abortions.

But there is no correlation between wanton legalized abortion and infanticide of children being born. No. As friend Sandy noted, the parents of this girl must have been conservative. That explains it. Note this baby was left in the care of the mother who tried to kill her and who had apparently murdered the baby's sibling. Reported Fox News March 2:

Authorities investigating a teacher's aide accused of trying to drown her newborn girl in a toilet have found the decomposed remains of another infant at her southern IL home.

    elyse.jpg

The remains apparently had been at Elyse Mamino's home in the St. Louis suburb of Belleville for more than a year.... No charges in the child's death had been filed as of Monday.

Mamino, 23, was arrested last week and charged with attempted first-degree murder. Authorities allege that in November, she was at a house party in nearby Columbia when she gave birth in a bathroom and tried to drown the baby....

    Free Coburn!

Jivin J reported last week the Obama administration plans to overturn an HHS rule implemented by the Bush administration that protects medical professionals. Tthe Wall Street Journal explained what this rule does:

[The rule] says hospitals, pharmacies and other entities that be charged with discrimination and lose federal funds [Medicaid, Medicare, SCHIP, etc.] if they pressure employees to take part in treatments to which they object on religious or moral grounds....

Still... Obama in August criticized the then-proposed rule and said he was "committed to ensuring that the health and reproductive rights of women are protected."

In other words, Obama doesn't want federal medical worker/entity conscience protections enforced. Obama considers it "protect[ion]" to force health care providers to participate in abortion.

free coburn2.jpgYesterday CNS News reported US Senator Tom Coburn (R-TN), an ob/gyn, is telling Obama, "Go ahead. Make my day."

Coburn... [said] many medical practitioners, including himself, will go to prison before agreeing to engage in medical practices they morally oppose, such as abortion....

The Obama administration's "review" is considered the precursor to rescinding the regulation.

"I think a lot of us will go to jail," Coburn told CNSNews.com when asked what would happen if the administration reverses the policy. "Let's see them prosecute the first one of us for not doing that."

Repeating: Embryonic stem cells are yesterday's science

I previously reported separate Japanese and U.S. "Nobel Prize worthy" breakthroughs, reprogramming adult stem cells to become the equivalent of embryonic stem cells. Jivin J reported this morning on something I think bears repeating. A Canadian research team discovery that actually predated the aforementioned is finally getting headlines, thanks to a paper published March 1 in Nature, as reported by the National Post (click to enlarge)...

Presdient Obama's promotion of taxpayer funded embryonic stem cell research is completely unnecessary and even backward. Why is he pushing it?

    Hialeah copycat

Recalling the July 2006 story of the abortion survivor zipped moving and breathing into a biohazard bag at a Hialeah, FL, abortion mill, read this from Fox News, February 27:

A University of AZ sophomore was arrested and charged with attempted first-degree murder and child abuse, Wednesday, after she gave birth to an infant in a communal university shower hall and then placed the child in a plastic bag....

    sarah tatum.jpg

Sarah Tatum, 19, who allegedly hid her pregnancy from the other students in her dorm, telling them that she had been gaining weight due to a thyroid problem, was discovered by two of her hallmates in the shower hall... with a bag of what they thought were bloody clothes....

When the pair looked more closely at the bag, however, they realized that it was moving and that Tatum had placed her child inside.

"The plastic bag was the kind with the draw string on top," said Jaime Perez, a... freshman, who... is a close friend of one of the hallmates who found Tatum. "She tied the bag so tight that the policeman had to cut it with a knife."

    Jivin J's Life Links, 3-2-09

    web grab.jpgby JivinJ

  • Researchers have now created induced pluripotent stem (iPS) cells by "using strands of genetic material, instead of potentially dangerous genetically engineered viruses, to coax skin cells into a state that appears biologically identical to embryonic stem cells":

In addition to the scientific implications, the work comes at a politically sensitive moment. Scientists are anxiously waiting for President Obama to follow through on his promise to lift restrictions on federal funding for research on human embryonic stem cells. Critics of such a move immediately pointed to the work as the latest evidence that the alternative cells make such research unnecessary.

"Stem cell research that requires destroying embryos is going the way of the Model T," Richard Doerflinger of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops said. "No administration that values science and medical progress over politics will want to divert funds now toward that increasingly obsolete and needlessly divisive approach."
