Bill Maher mocks the disabled

All will recall President Abortion mocking Special Olympians on the Jay Leno show as being at bad at bowling as he is.

Then came Sarah Palin, with a future Special Olympian of her own, criticizing Obama for being so calloused.

This is where Raving Theist picked up the story:

... Palin condemned his "degrading remark about our world's most precious and unique people."

This observation was too much for talk show host Bill Maher, who led a panel consisting of Senator Bernie Sanders, actress Kerry Washington and New York Times reporter Andrew Ross Sorkin in a round of hooting, hand-clapping laughter at Palin's presumed stupidity. Things got a bit uncomfortable, however, when Maher specifically challenged Palin's description of the disabled:

What a cruel man.

It's hard for me to be angry with Bill Maher, because I feel like the man holds enough anger for about ten people within his heart.

I just feel sorry for him. He is probably one of the most miserable men I've ever seen.

Posted by: Kel at March 27, 2009 5:11 PM

When the last chapter is written on the moral decadence that we call the main stream media, Bill Maher will be a long forgotten has-been. I agree with His Man: nothing surprises or shocks any more.

If there were justice, Bill Maher would be "promoted" to the position of White House correspondent while Sarah Palin is serving as president.

Posted by: Jerry at March 27, 2009 5:18 PM

Liberals used to be called "bleeding heart" liberals. Now they are just out for blood. The more bloodshed, literally or figuratively, the better. The politics of hope and change? No. Quite the contrary. It's the politics of destruction, no matter how low one must stoop.

Posted by: Lisa Graas at March 27, 2009 6:16 PM

Are disabled people really more unique and precious than the rest of us? I wouldn't have attacked Palin for her statement, but she took a cheap shot at obama and she'll get some cheap shots back. That's politics.
Let's end the feigned outrage.

Posted by: Hal at March 27, 2009 6:24 PM

Unfortunately coming from Bill Maher that is not a surprise. He mocked Christianity and I believe Catholics and Jews in a movie he recently did.

In our society now it is quite acceptable to mock Christian faith and things that are good. However one day these people will have to answer for it, unless they turn to God and repent.

C'mon, it's obvious. Admit that the guy is a jerk or walk with him.

Posted by: HisMan at March 27, 2009 7:31 PM

That's awful... What's he trying to say? Is HE more precious than people with learning disabilities or mental handicaps? Not if he's being cruel for the sake of being cruel. I'd hate to see him ever become disabled, because I'll wonder if he thinks himself less precious because of it. :(

His mockery is obvious Asitis. How can you again fail to see something so basic? His point may have been that they are not the MOST precious, but he delivered his retort in a mocking manner. Thus the mocking. Besides, its obvious what she is talking about. Surely you didnt really think she was speaking of Palin and surely you meant the comment only to be snarky right?

Which is it, snarky or clueless? Seems to be a pattern here for you and Hal.

Posted by: LizFromNebraska at March 27, 2009 9:12 PM

I personally find his comments offencive. Remember, I have a disability, and when you put one of us down, you're putting all of us down, and I am sick and tired of some of the stuff being said here about Sarah Palin! You havn't even walked one mile in her shoose, and you can sit their like armchair quarter back and judge something you know nothing about! My sister has an Austic child, and you think she or I would like for some one to make thouse dastardly coments about Caroul? Obama can make fun of a person with a disability, and he thinks its something to smile about!

Posted by: RJ Sandefur at March 27, 2009 9:23 PM

Now I can see why Obama supports abortion, because people with disabilities, arn't considdered appart of his "Change,"

Posted by: RJ Sandefur at March 27, 2009 9:27 PM

Bystander, 6:58PM

Please do some serious research into personality disorders. Then tell us what characteristics Palin has that would make you consider her a Narcissistic Personality Disorder.
My sister has this disorder and my father was a borderline PD, closely related to NPD, so I'd be very interested in your input.

Posted by: Mary at March 27, 2009 10:14 PM

So what would Bill Maher do if he were ever disabled from an accident? What if he finds himself paralized and in a wheelchair one day? I'll bet he would STILL want to live. I guess he feels that it's his God given right to decide who lives or dies. After all, it's not HIS life.

Posted by: Heather at March 27, 2009 10:15 PM

I do feel pity for Bill. He'll probably die a lonely old man one day. He's bitter.

Posted by: Heather at March 27, 2009 10:18 PM

HisMan 7:25PM

I remain convinced Obama is a sociopath.
Narcissism or sociopathy, they are two closely related disorders with interchangable symptoms.
Narcissist or sociopath, the person is devoid of conscience, unempathetic, and potentially dangerous.

Posted by: Mary at March 27, 2009 10:27 PM

Remember when Sandra Bernhard trashed Palin and wished a gang rape of African Americans on her? Just a joke, of course. Let's just say that Bush had made that "Special Olympics" crack on Leno. Let's just say that Palin had wished gang rape on Bernhard. Why is it okay when you liberals make these sorry cracks and anybody else's head would be on a platter??????????????

Posted by: Heather at March 27, 2009 10:39 PM

Heather 10:39PM

Why would she stress rapists of a certain race?
One must wonder about this racist stereotype of the black man as a sexual predator.
I've long maintained that those who are the first and loudest to condemn the racism and bigotry of others are the people most blind to their own.

Rose, I was just saying that homosexuality is a sociopathic disorder and therefore ones disposition towards homosexuality can be relevant to a discussion on sociopathic disorders. Maher is just a television shock jock, and I wouldn't be shocked if he were gay, bi, or straight.

Posted by: truthseeker at March 28, 2009 12:02 AM

Truthseeker,

Can you show me where in the DSM-IV homosexuality is listed as "sociopathic"?

Or is that particular idea from the same book as "people who don't have HIV can get AIDS from having buttsex because it's BUTTSECKS AND IT IS BAAAAAAD!" nonsense?

Posted by: Rose Tyler at March 28, 2009 12:06 AM

Wow, TS, when did you become a doctor? Got any factual information to back up that homosexuality is a sociopathic disorder let alone EVEN a mental disorder? Do you know what a sociopath is? Sociopaths don't have a conscience..no empathy for others. I know many gays who have more empathy in their pinky's than you do in your whole body. But keep pushing the agenda of ignorance..whatever floats your boat.

Socipathy is a personality disorder. It manifests itself by certain traits. These are people with no conscience and empathy. They are manipulative and charming people, which is what makes you unsuspecting of them.
Their anti social behavior can be very subtle or very profound. They can be a spouse, co-worker, friend, child, next door neighbor.
Homosexuality is not in and of itself sociopathic. Gay and straight people can be sociopaths.

Yes, we do. I mean, if somebody wants to change theirs, normally it's not a problem (it they just want a different name)...just don't go back and forth...

Rae changes hers so she can throw cheap shots at pro-lifers, because she doesn't have the guts to use her own name.

Speaking of Sarah Palin, I hope Bystander will let me know why he/she considers Palin a Narcissistic Personality Disorder.
Being I am related to a NPD, was the child of a Borderline PD, and the mother of a Borderline PD as well, he/she and I could have quite a fascinating discussion.
BTW Bystander, NPD is not a disablity. These are usually highly intelligent people who you encounter all the time and are totally unaware they are personality disordered. The NPD might initially strike you as extremely arrogant and belittling, but then again they may be real charmers.

Posted by: asitis at March 28, 2009 10:52 AM

Appearing on the Friday "Late Night with Conan O'Brien," comedian Bill Maher took repeated swipes at the Republican Party and conservatives as idiotic, bigoted, homophobic, you know, all the usual epithets.

Although his material was registering mostly nervous laughter from the audience, Maher plunged further into his assault on traditional values, attacking Christians, particularly Catholics, by insisting that one has to be "schizophrenic" to go about life normally for six days a week only to, on the seventh go to church and believe that when drinking communion wine one is drinking "the blood of a 2,000-year old space god."

I caught this line while watching live and didn't have a tape handy to catch the comment on video, however an "NBC Video Rewind" of the program should be available at NBC.com later today.

asitis, here is why I don't feel that the man is at peace. Why not just live and let live? Why does he care if people believe in God or not? Why is he always bringing it up?

Posted by: Heather at March 28, 2009 11:12 AM

P.S. I did drop the sexual preference issue. It's just his babble in general. Why does he feel that it's so important to let the world know that there is no God?

John 15:18-30 (New Living Translation)

The World’s Hatred
18 “If the world hates you, remember that it hated me first. 19 The world would love you as one of its own if you belonged to it, but you are no longer part of the world. I chose you to come out of the world, so it hates you. 20 Do you remember what I told you? ‘A slave is not greater than the master.’ Since they persecuted me, naturally they will persecute you. And if they had listened to me, they would listen to you. 21 They will do all this to you because of me, for they have rejected the One who sent me. 22 They would not be guilty if I had not come and spoken to them. But now they have no excuse for their sin. 23 Anyone who hates me also hates my Father. 24 If I hadn’t done such miraculous signs among them that no one else could do, they would not be guilty. But as it is, they have seen everything I did, yet they still hate me and my Father. 25 This fulfills what is written in their Scriptures: ‘They hated me without cause.’
26 “But I will send you the Advocate—the Spirit of truth. He will come to you from the Father and will testify all about me. 27 And you must also testify about me because you have been with me from the beginning of my ministry.

Heather I would like to introduce you to asitis. She is maddening to talk to about abortion etc. But she has some pretty good recipes to share and well, sometimes it is best to ignore her.

asitis meet Heather. :)

asitis,
I might have deleted a post of yours. I was going through a bunch of spam and may have clicked on yours too. I apologize.

Carla, Thanks for the 411. I get it. How are you today??? It's nice to see you.:]

Posted by: Heather at March 28, 2009 11:30 AM

Heather,

Asitis is a hypocrite. She thinks I am an angry person because I cannot stand her particular brand of ignorance, yet she doesnt believe Bill Maher to be angry when he is ten times as volitile as I am. Shes a troll, through and through.

Also, dont let her pressure you into providing sources. Anytime you catch her on claiming something made up, she claims that it is up to YOU to provide a source to discredit HER point.

A little argument about Reardon comes to mind...

Posted by: Oliver at March 28, 2009 11:31 AM

Mary 10:18 You obviously know something about Narcissistic Personality Disorder. I have seen many posts by professionals analyzing Sarah Palin's conduct in terms of the typical symptoms.

Of course, that requires an analysis of her actual conduct, not of the saint the far right has constructed. These include using her family as campaign props, hauling Trig around like a sack of potatoes on the campaign trail instead of providing him the care and therapy he needs, throwing Bristol under the bus to thwart persistent rumors that Bristol is Trig's mother,
using and then discarding people time after time in her political climb, her crazed vendetta against her ex brother in law which has cost the state of AK millions, using her office to personally financially benefit her and her family time and time again, appointing grossly unqualified cronies to political positions, pathological lying, abandoning the best interests of AK to cater to an extreme right wing religious national power base, etc.

Since you could never acknowledge, much less discuss, the real Sarah Palin, any analysis of her in terms of NPD is impossible.

Hi Heather!! I am great!!

I would love to hear your story.....you must have lots to share!! :) Email me if you can.

Carla, the sidewalk counseling has brought me into a new understanding about pro-aborts. I have now seen it with my own eyes. So sad.

Posted by: Heather at March 28, 2009 11:34 AM

asitis, here is why I don't feel that the man is at peace. Why not just live and let live?
Posted by: Heather at March 28, 2009 11:12 AM

Excuse me? That's funny coming from you, calling homosexuality immoral. Sure, maybe immoral to you. But that doesn't mean it's immoral to all. Live and let live Heather.

Posted by: asitis at March 28, 2009 11:34 AM

Oliver, thanks to you as well. Carla, I will get around to it today. Still having a spot of trouble with my set up:\

Posted by: Heather at March 28, 2009 11:36 AM

*sigh* Homosexuality is immoral. Period.

Posted by: Heather at March 28, 2009 11:38 AM

Bystander: "Since you could never acknowledge, much less discuss, the real Sarah Palin, any analysis of her in terms of NPD is impossible."

Almost everything you said about Palin cannot be established. You also failed to mention that the trooper was a violent maniac who more than likely deserved to be ousted and was not. Speaking of cronyism....

Of course, what should I expect from you? You were called out for a serious logic error and you never fessed up to it. Something to do with confusing sufficient and necessary factors....I cant remember the exact details.

Posted by: Oliver at March 28, 2009 11:38 AM

Oh geez Jaspy! You sure pegged me! Unfortunately, I think you overestimated my maturity level. It can't POSSIBLY be 9, no more than 7 tops. Also- aren't pathological liars sociopaths? Gee willakers! Better lock me up with SoMG and Laura!

*snort*

Oliver, what do you think I meant by the IRONY? I'm just as mean-spirited as Mr. Maher here. Do the friggin' math yourself.

Posted by: Rae at March 28, 2009 11:40 AM

Asitis,

I love how you boldly claim that Jasper deleted your post without any evidence. Pretty indicitive of your argumentative style. For example, you claimed that Bill did not mock the mentally disabled, and when I called you on it, you claimed an unrelated point that he also mocked Palin. What does that have to do with anything? Typical Asitis. I wonder if your rude children take after you in this way as well.

Posted by: Oliver at March 28, 2009 11:24 AM

Oh hello my sweet sweet Oliver! My rude children? That's funny! Hal, are you laughing with me?

I claimed an UNRELATED point that he ALSO mocked Palin? Hello! The very significant point was that he was actually mocking Palin, not the disabled.

I "boldly claimed" Jasper deleted mu comment. No I boldly asked if it did, because it was addressed to him and he has the power. It seems to have been carla who supposedly accidently did that.

I think you might need some coffee. And maybe some cheering up! Be happy!

Posted by: asitis at March 28, 2009 11:41 AM

BUT..it doesn't matter what I say about homosexuality b/c Bill Maher has labeed me a schizophrenic anyways. Now he's dissing the mentally ill. *head spins*

Well so much for your "Live and let live" Heather then. *sigh* :)

Enjoy the day.

Posted by: asitis at March 28, 2009 11:34 AM"

Men/women do not define morality, God does. It is not variable, it does not depend on the whims of men/women.

Mark 8:38
"If anyone is ashamed of me and my words in this adulterous and sinful generation, the Son of Man will be ashamed of him when he comes in his Father's glory with the holy angels."

Homosexuality is an abomination to God, always has been, always will be. Likewise, all sin is an abomination to God.

Make your choice or so it seems, you already have, then please repent by accepting Christ as your sin offering. If not, be then willing, in full knowledge and without surprise, of the consequences of not conforming to God's will.

Pleading ignorance will not be allowed for ignorance did not die on a cross for you, it is a false god.

Her post is still there. I wasn't here if/when it was "deleted," but it is still posted on this thread.

Posted by: Kel at March 28, 2009 11:47 AM

I believe in the word of God. Live and let live. Yep! Bill is allowed to voice an opinion on anything he likes. Bill Maher is made of flesh and blood just like the rest of us, and Bill didn't die on the cross for me. If I CHOOSE to believe that Jesus did, that is my personal CHOICE.

Hi EliSabeth,

I think I remember you from when I was here before. You're a nurse correct?

I was here for a while some time ago but left for a nice breather.

I'm in nursing school, that's why I believe I remember you telling me you were a nurse?

Posted by: Elizabeth at March 28, 2009 1:18 PM

Bystander, 11:32PM

You're not serious, right? What you describe is a purely subjective and biased point of view. You do not list the specific symptons that would indicate she is a Narcissistic PD. Is Bristol Trig's mother? It was left wing blogs that claimed he was. Then left wing folks hollering that Palin put her pregnancy with Trig at risk by travelling to a conference. So which is it?
How do you know for a fact that Trig does not get the therapy he needs? By hauling him around like a "sack of potatoes" do you mean she threw him over her shoulder? Exactly how was she supposed to carry him?
Try again.

Kel, I posted another comment related to that one and Jasper's 8:22am response. It was shortly after 8:22am and before 9:42am. That comment was deleted and still is. Carla thinks she may have deleted it. You could ask her where it is, or any other mod who may have knowingly deleted it. I have no idea where deleted comments go.

I have been searching for it, but there's no record of it, asitis. Sorry. Perhaps Carla accidentally deleted it by mistake as she said. Did it ask the same question you had asked prior to that...the one that Bethany responded to?

Kel and asitis,

If its any help I have had it happen where my post simply never showed up even though I was certain I had done everything correctly. I've also had posts show up several minutes after I posted. I know of other times I actually forgot to hit post.
Did you see the post on this thread and then it just disappeared?

Yes I am sure you are very "concerned."

Posted by: Carla at March 28, 2009 3:56 PM

Actually, asitis, it was you who posted several times, accusing mods here of purposely deleting your comments. If by "bringing it up" you mean my response to Carla when she stated that she thought she had deleted it, I responded because I thought that the comment was still there (since you basically posted the same thing twice).

BTW, it appears to me that Bethany is correct. Patricia is not tstl or angel.

Rae: "Oliver, what do you think I meant by the IRONY? I'm just as mean-spirited as Mr. Maher here. Do the friggin' math yourself."

I got the intention Rae. I just dont think you know what the term "irony" means. In what way is it ironic for someone who is (supposedly) mentally handicapped to post on a thread about being mentally handicapped?

Heres a good visual explanation of irony just in case.

http://halbot.haluze.sk/images/2006-10/2708_PBF006AD-The_Tree_Of_Irony.jpg

Asitis: "The very significant point was that he was actually mocking Palin, not the disabled."

Youre confused again. See, its possible for Maher to mock Palin but to also mock the disabled. Surely he mocked Palin, but it was his snide dismisal of the disabled that was what brought our attention. See two things can happen at roughly the same time Asitis. Life is pretty complicated isnt!

Posted by: Oliver at March 28, 2009 7:53 PM

"His snide dismissal of the disabled"? No, what he was "dismissing" was Palin's claim that they are the MOST precious and unique. He wasn't saying they aren't precious and unique. It was her saying MOST that he was dismissing. It was her that he was mocking.

Pity that the clip ended there. I wonder why?Would be good to see what happened after that. hmmmmm.............

Posted by: asitis at March 28, 2009 9:23 PM

Well, asitis, YouTube can be your friend. There are plenty of clips of Maher's shows there, including that one, if you look.

Or maybe it's a *conspiracy*!!!

I guess it's ok to mock the *mothers* of unwed teens and Down's syndrome babies, then. I see. That makes it alllllll better.

Posted by: Kel at March 28, 2009 9:51 PM

You think he's mocking mothers of Down's babies and unwed teen mothers? I thought he was mocking Sarah Palin.

Were you able to find more of that clip on YouTube Kel? If so, care to share the link, because I didn't find ?

Posted by: asitis at March 28, 2009 9:56 PM

BTW, it appears to me that Bethany is correct. Patricia is not tstl or angel.

Posted by: Kel at March 28, 2009 4:17 PM

BTW Kel, what exactly do you mean by that? Because it's already been established that Patricia is tstl.

Posted by: asitis at March 28, 2009 10:06 PM

Can you show me where that was established, please? I am not aware of this admission, and the IP addresses do not match up at all.

Mocking Sarah Palin for saying what she said about children like her son is cruel. He spent the entire segment mocking Palin and her family, including pulling out a baby doll (whom he called "Baby Tripp") at the end of the segment who was voiced to say rude things about Sarah Palin, including a profanity. Go to youtube and search for "Bill Maher sorkin washington" and you should find it. I just typed in the names of the guests.

He's a real class act, that guy.

Posted by: Kel at March 28, 2009 10:15 PM

BTW, asitis, for future reference, that's the easiest way to find a specific episode, typically. Type in the host's name and the names of the guest panel.

To the right you will find the links to the other segments of that same show.

Posted by: Kel at March 28, 2009 10:18 PM

Thanks Kel. I'll go check out the link I'm not doubting he mocked Palin.. in fact, that's what I'm saying he did. I'm saying he didn't mock the disabled. Well, at least not in the segment we saw here. I'll watch the full one though now.

I do agree with you that Maher's not exactly a class act. NO, can't say I've ever heard him described that way!!!!

Now, as for the other issue, if you go back to December, you'll see the lengthy exchange. I think it was in a post on Caroline Kennedy......

Posted by: asitis at March 28, 2009 10:23 PM

Thank you. I will check on that.

Posted by: Kel at March 28, 2009 10:26 PM

Wow, that was interesting reading...

I never saw that exchange until now. I did not see an actual admission on anyone's part, however, as to their identities...only assumptions and not-so-nice behavior. Not very pretty.

If the poster in question was in fact posting under a different moniker, how is that anyone else's business, so long as she was not using two different ones at the same time? It is not a moderator's concern if someone (like you, asitis) should choose to stop posting under your former moniker and pick a new moniker under which to post. It is acceptable unless one has been banned.

If someone is posting under two different monikers at the same time, the moderators will know and will handle it. In the meantime, I feel that it would be advisable to stop treating new posters as if they were some other persona, instead of the moniker that they have chosen. This way, there is a lot less confusion.

We're here to debate ideas, not to harass people personally.

Hope you enjoyed the Bill Maher clips. I know I didn't. :D

Posted by: Kel at March 28, 2009 11:05 PM

By the way, it was clear to me that he was not only mocking Palin, but what she said as to HER VIEW of disabled individuals being the "most special" people. Why even bring something like that up? All it serves to do is mock Palin and cause others to laugh at those with special needs as if they are somehow not valuable people with feelings.

I have worked with a lot of special needs children, and I can tell you from experience that they ARE special and can help us to see the world in a whole different way. They can help us to be more grateful. They can help us to appreciate "little" things that we never would have thought to appreciate. In my opinion, that is pretty amazing.

The fact that Bill Maher even brought this up was telling. If you notice, his panel quickly skirted the issue and began to mock Sarah Palin to detract from what even *they* felt was a very uncomfortable subject.

Posted by: Kel at March 28, 2009 11:11 PM

No it wasn't pretty! And I was bratty at times too. She never came out and admitted it but she didn't have to. She slipped up and replied in an exchange with Josephine as Patricia. (Oh dear two monikers at once!)

But aside from that one slip, she hasn't broken any rules. It's just curious why she leaves and then tries to come back as a new poster. Do you really want people doing that? Especially people that are already well-known here?

As for me, I'll TRY to behave. Okay? C);)

I have to go to bed now kel. Good night.

Posted by: asitis at March 28, 2009 11:20 PM

Kel you are right on both counts: Her comment was a lame thing to mock Palin for. And a dunb thing two because someone who wanted to could (and has!) turned it around. And his panelists were smart to stay out of it. But then again, isn't that typical Maher, to walk right on the edge?

And these children and adults ARE special and precious and unique!

Okay, now to bed....

Posted by: asitis at March 28, 2009 11:26 PM

"And a dunb thing two" ??!!!! yes, clearly it's time for bed! G'night.

Posted by: asitis at March 28, 2009 11:28 PM

*******************************************

Frankly, I don't personally care if people want to leave and come back as new posters. People do that all over the web. It happens on many, many message boards. I think that it should be left up to Jill and the mods as to how those sorts of things are handled here. In the future, if you have an issue with a mod's use of his/her own discretion, consider emailing that moderator rather than posting inflammatory comments on the threads. I'm sure it could be better handled that way. If it's not handled the way you want...well, that's the way it is when you're not a moderator. :D You don't get to handle it...they do. I've had disagreements with mods on other message boards before. Taking it public is not the best course of action. ;)

Rest well, asitis. BTW, your smiley looks like a little leprechaun! LOL!

Posted by: Kel at March 28, 2009 11:29 PM

Kel,

You are so right about special needs children. I love volunteering with special olympics. The dedication of the athletes, families, and volunteers is incredible. I'm a low level volunteer and I admire the work of the people who devote themselves to this year round.
A friend of mine is a devoted special ed. teacher. Her knowledge and dedication, not to mention her patience, is humbling.

As for Maher, the fact he dates mainly porn stars tells you what a real class act he is!

Posted by: Mary at March 29, 2009 5:58 AM

Mary, you are such a wonderful person! I think that's wonderful!

Posted by: Heather at March 29, 2009 7:50 AM

Good morning Kel,

As for Maher, the fact he dates mainly porn stars tells you what a real class act he is!

............as well as an indication that porn stars have lower standards than we thought.

Seems they deserve each other.

Posted by: Mary at March 29, 2009 7:53 AM

Mary, I meant the volunteering part:] One of my nursing assignments was to care for an 8 year old autistic boy in a home setting. It was challenging, but he had the most patient mother.

Posted by: Heather at March 29, 2009 7:53 AM

Heather,

Thank you but like I have said, I'm at the bottom of the food chain where volunteering is concerned. There are people who dedicate so much more of their time and effort.
My very favorite is bowling. You could choreograph the "William Tell Overture" to the flurry of activity of volunteers directing from their podiums.

Its people like my spec.ed. teacher friend that deserve so much recognition and don't get it.

Posted by: Mary at March 29, 2009 7:57 AM

Good Morning asitis,

A pirate hat? Not even close. Kel definitely has it right with the leprechaun.

Posted by: Mary at March 29, 2009 7:59 AM

Mary, I know. There was a sweet elderly man who volunteers with AIDS babies. He holds them and rocks them. God bless his heart. I can't remember where he volunteered now, but it was at one of our local hospitals. I saw the news story several years ago.

Posted by: Heather at March 29, 2009 8:02 AM

Heather,

I've read some interesting theories on autism. One is the use of ultrasound throughout pregnancy. In my day, it was used strictly for diagnostic purposes only. I had only one in all three of my pregnancies. It would make sense, who knows what those bombarding sound waves may do to a developing nervous system.
x-rays used to be routinely performed on developing fetuses. It was only later discovered this led to an increase in childhood leukemia.
Another theory is Vit.D deficiency. We're afraid of the sun and children do not get outside like they used to.

Just theories but very interesting.

Posted by: Mary at March 29, 2009 8:04 AM

Mary, really?? I never knew about any of this!

Posted by: Heather at March 29, 2009 8:17 AM

Hi Mary! I'm going to have to work on that hat!

Another interesting autism theory I heard seveal years ago was something called "geek syndrome". Ther name is not meant to be offensive BTW. Reserchers found prevalence of autism in high tech centers. Theory is that traits, especially when present in both parents, that make one excel in mathematics, computer science, etc are amplified in the children as autism. Ever hard o this?

Posted by: aitis at March 29, 2009 10:04 AM

Asitis: "No, what he was "dismissing" was Palin's claim that they are the MOST precious and unique."

He said "Most unique? No *timeout sign with hands*" and then later "isnt there a place where reality exists?"

Those are dismissive claims Asitis. I know you live in fantasy land and can only find the fault in accidental one word shifts of your opponents and make up accusations to insult researchers that you dislike, but what Maher did was clearly dismissive of the disabled. His statement ultimately may have been "they are not the most precious" but his delivery said "oh cmon, yeah right."

Of course, it just hit me that you cant recognize the rudeness of your own children. Maybe you are nlind to his rudeness as well?

Posted by: Oliver at March 29, 2009 10:13 AM

asitis 10:04am

I have heard of that. I think what is now recognized as autism was at one time just viewed as quirky behavior, geeks, or poor social skills and interaction and were ridiculed and shunned.
Its amazing just how highly intelligent autistics can be and sadly for so long these children and adults were put away in institutions, branded as "retarded". This often happened to deaf children as well.
We've all heard of savants. This still can't be explained.
Special ed. has come a long way and my friend has mentioned much of the success that has been attained in educating these children. She's also called more than a few "experts" on their misdiagnoses of autistic children as retarded.

I give a lot of credence to the ultrasound theory. x-rays were at one time thought to be so harmless too. We have since learned to treat x-rays with the respect they deserve. Yes, childhood leukemia existed, but the problem worsened with the routine x-raying of the developing fetus, mostly done out of curiousity.

Posted by: Mary at March 29, 2009 10:44 AM

Of course, it just hit me that you cant recognize the rudeness of your own children. Maybe you are nlind to his rudeness as well?

Posted by: Oliver at March 29, 2009 10:13 AM

Rudeness of my own children? You DO crack me up my sweet oliver! Hal are you hearing this? Care to offer Oliver some more advice and a dose of reality.

Oh Bill Maher is rude alright! But he was being rude to Palin not the disabled.

Posted by: asitis at March 29, 2009 10:57 AM

Mary, I know it is good that what used to be thought of as "retarded" is now being recognized as highly intelligent. It does seem to be more prevalent, beyond what could be accounted for by better diagnosis alone.

Ever read "The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night Time"? Great little book!

Posted by: asitis at March 29, 2009 11:03 AM

asitis 11:03am

I have to agree there seems to be a higher incidence beyond just better diagnosis. That's why I remain very suspicious of it being related to ultrasound. I'm not sold on it being vaccines. My friend is adamant in her belief it is not vaccines as well. I think people just have to research and draw their own conclusions.
I would suppose a higher incidence of childhood leukemia was attributed to better diagnosis and more children being born as well. Certainly doctors didn't want to blame themselves or greatly modify the use of their latest medical toy.
Speaking of intelligence, for how many years were intelligent children with learning disablities ridiculed as "dunces" or "slow"? My brother was dyslexic and it was a nightmare for him.

No I never read the book but thank your for the referral.
Very sadly a friend of mine has a son disabled by very severe autism. Their daughter is normal. He is now in a group home and will never live independently, but seems content. I'm happy for her and her husband that they can now travel and enjoy their lives together. They certainly have paid their dues.

Posted by: Mary at March 29, 2009 11:57 AM

Mary, I think you'll enjoy the book. I really did. You'll feel for the main character and it gave me a feeling for what it must be like living with and around autism.

Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time by Mark Haddon.

Have a good day!

Asitis: "Oh Bill Maher is rude alright! But he was being rude to Palin not the disabled."

You can continue to deny the rudeness either from your duplicity or from your ignorance, but it doesnt change what Bill did here.

Posted by: Oliver at March 29, 2009 12:47 PM

Youre right Oliver, whatever my or your opinion is doesn't change the fact that bill maher was mocking palin and not the disabled.

Good? ;)

I keep forgeting that you are in your 40s and are a role model for children in their teens. The immaturity you show in nearly every post is really amazing. Its okay though, because it proves my point. Only someone as mentally and emotionally immature as you could blindly support abortion, hence you have no rational argument to support it.

That's how you feel Oliver? Really? Wow! News to me!

Yes, that's big huge sarcasm. Immature ,if you will.

Go enjoy the day. Be happy Oliver :)

Asitis:

Would you say this to an aborted baby?

"Have a good day"!

Hal,
If you had a child with Down syndrome, you would know exactly what she means. These children melt your heart. I've seen many a reluctant parent (beforehand) become transformed by their presence in their lives. Believe me, you would understand where Sarah Palin is coming from, if you had this experience.

I know a man who is an older bachelor, no children, very quiet and reserved, and one you would never think he would like kids that much. He is absolutely charmed by his little niece w/DS. She has gotten through to his heart like nobody else.

Also, they are unique...how many of us have 47 chromosomes? And they are precious. They become even more unique and precious as fewer and fewer make it to their day of birth.

As a special education teacher, I share the love for those precious among us with Down Syndrome. I have a niece with it and several friends have children and feel very blessed, indeed.

I was 16 when I met a little boy with Down Syndrome and just knew I would do whatever it took to be with them. I have many fond memories of Special Olympics, group homes, summer camps, and classrooms where I met some amazing people with Down Syndrome.

"hauling Trig around like a sack of potatoes on the campaign trail instead of providing him the care and therapy he needs"

My daughter is almost the same age as Trig, and what she still needs most is to be with Mommy. Even disabled children need time with Mommy a lot more than they need any therapy, and if Mommy (and/or Daddy) learn to provide the therapy themselves it will be more effective. The fact that Palin brings her baby everywhere speaks in her favor as a mother.

"Another interesting autism theory I heard seveal years ago was something called "geek syndrome". Ther name is not meant to be offensive BTW. Reserchers found prevalence of autism in high tech centers. Theory is that traits, especially when present in both parents, that make one excel in mathematics, computer science, etc are amplified in the children as autism. Ever hard o this?

My nephew has autism, and now my brother-in-law and his wife have decided that my brother-in-law must have "Asperger's Syndrome" (which is in the autism spectrum).

But they aren't the same thing at all. Three-quarters or better of my high school and college friends and many of my (and my husband's) immediate relatives could be diagnosed with Asperger's (though this may be more a commentary on my social circles and taste in friends than on society). It's not autism, it's a trendy diagnosis.

That stuff about ultrasound scares me, Mary, because they had me in for so many with Hannah, due to incompetence, failures in logic, and inability to click buttons on medical software correctly. (They kept having me come back because they didn't get a good enough view, and eventually I realized they weren't going to see what they wanted to, because I wasn't going to miraculously lose a layer of fat. And then they wanted more for sizing due to gestational diabetes, but misscheduled them, and didn't believe me or check it out when I called them on it.... and it didn't size her properly anyway.) Next time I'll give them one for dating and one for checking her out, and that's it.

Bill. . . .tsk tsk on your part.
Why would you make fun of people who are pretty much the most pure and innocent people walking on this earth?
I used to like your crudeness but now your just being down right cruel.

Are we talking about the same Sarah Palin who vetoed $275,000 in Special Olympics Alaska funds? http://www.gov.state.ak.us/omb/09_omb/budget/bills/SB221_with_vetoes.pdf

Or was this the Sarah Palin who turned down stimulus money for education that would have gone to the aid of underprivileged and special needs children? http://www.adn.com/palin/story/729504.html

Yeah...she really cares for those with special needs. It's not just political.
