Death in family may keep Stupak from voting on healthcare

From the Washington Examiner, today:

Rep. Bart Stupak, D-MI, who has threatened to hold up the House health care bill over language he believes would permit taxpayer dollars to be spent on abortions, may not even vote on the bill if it comes to the floor for consideration this week.

Stupak's mother-in-law, Elaine Olsen, died suddenly on Sunday and he is not expected to be in Washington DC this week....

Stupak had been negotiating with Democratic leaders over adding language to the House health care bill that would require fencing off federal health care dollars so none are used to cover abortions. Stupak said he has the backing of 40 fellow House Democrats who would vote against the bill if stiffer language is not included.

Our sincere sympathies to the Stupak family.

A statement from Stupak's office confirms, "Due to his absence, Congressman Stupak has had to cancel scheduled activities in Washington, DC this week."

As for this development as it relates to the healthcare bill, the Lord knows. This is just another reminder to place our faith in God, not people. According to Fox News, November 2:

A senior House leadership aide who didn't wish to be identified indicated that Stupak's absence wouldn't hurt talks on the abortion issue.

But another key Democrat involved in the abortion discussions saw it differently. When asked if Stupak's unavailability could impact the issue, the lawmaker responded "Yeah. Big time."

Perhaps this explains the advancement of the phony pro-life amendment to the healthcare bill.

That's so sad. I hope that the family is doing okay and that Ms. Olsen didn't suffer. My sincerest sympathies to all of them. :(

I will pray for Mr. Stupak and his family and also that the pro-life amendment will be brought up for a vote if not by him that someone else will take up the prolife cause in the House of Representatives. God help our nation.
