Sure, if the cat were stuck there for 5 or 10 minutes, that would be just mean. But to let the cat get through the cat flap one minute, well, that's just encouraging independence.

I watch as my son struggles with blocks. I watch him struggle to get objects that are beyond his reach. I watch him struggle to get onto/off of the sofa. These things all frustrate him. He risks a slight head bump if he messes up with some of them. He occasionally fusses at me to help. There are times when, after a while, I help him out. The majority of the time, I let him do it. If I didn't, he wouldn't learn independence. He wouldn't learn to believe in his capacity for success. If I always came to his rescue, he wouldn't be learning anything except that mommy will always come to his rescue.

How much less humane I must be than that cat's owner, huh? ;-)

Even if the cat can learn nothing from the experience, he can do it by himself in adequate time and he ISN'T learning to sit at the back door and wait for someone to help him whenever he wants in/out.
