NOW is looking at the pro-life issue backwards. Women should be reminded that they are strong enough and smart enough to make decisions that allow for career and educational opportunities while still giving their babies a chance at life. In my own home, my daughter Bristol has also been challenged by pro-abortion "women's rights? groups who don't agree with her decision to have her baby, nor do they like the abstinence message which she articulated as her personal commitment....
NOW could gain ground and credibility with everyday Americans, thus allowing their pro-women message to be heard by more than just their ardent supporters, if they made wiser decisions regarding which battles to pick. They should call attention to and embrace the Tebows' message, instead of covertly and overtly disrespecting what Mrs. Tebow, Bristol, and millions of other women have chosen to do (in less than ideal circumstances).
Thalidomide accidentally caused harm to 10k unborn children. However, the UK as well as the US presently approves a medication that intentionally kills millions of unborn children. That medication is mifiprex or RU-486. Unlike thalidomide, the only reason that mifiprex is given is to intentionally kill an unborn child. If the unborn child survives after a woman takes mifiprex, it is considered a failure of the medication. What does it say about our culture that we issue apologies for harming children in the past at the same time we market a medication that intentionally kills children? Instead of harming children, what if thalidomide was more effective in killing them? Would we still apologize?
Comments:
good work, serge. if thalidomide was worse, it would be better.

Saddam Hussein's mother made a bad decision.
But at least Tebow's mother had a choice.

Posted by: xalisae at January 27, 2010 2:37 PMAmen on the NOW statement by Sarah Palin. I have been singing this tune for some time now. You can not tell me I am "too fragile", "too weak", or will be "too overburdened" to raise a child who happens to have Ds. Then in the same breath tell me I am a strong woman who has rights. It is either one way or the other. I say we are strong women who have rights, who happen to be given a gift of another challenge, which WE CAN HANDLE by the way!!! Why??? Because we are women! We have proven all through out history that we can do all things, when given a chance. We only weaken our stance when we take our children's lives, and say it is because we can't do it. We can indeed! And we do!!!

Obama refers to himself 132 times in one speech.
"Its all about ME, MY kingodm come, ME MY will be done."
Heard a great quote today.
Former French President Francois Mitterand said of Ronald Reagan.
"Ronald Reagan does not connect with the american people because he is a great communicator, but because he is in communion with them."
It is very difficult to be in communion with someone else when you are constantly talking about yourself.
B.O.!
Shut your pie hole and demonstrate some selfless leadership.
Then leave it up to us to figure out it benefitted the nation.
You will receive our collective judgement a little less than 3 years from now, though there may be some indicators in the interim.

Posted by: kbhvac at January 27, 2010 3:36 PMBristol Palin didn't use contraception.
Would "women's rights" groups criticize Bristol if she were using her situation as a basis for promoting contraception to other young women?
Now had she used contraception, Bristol might still be heartbroken about being used and dumped, but the rest of us wouldn't know about it. Bristol is promoting abstinence because she thinks that the real mistake she made was having sex. Others who don't even know her or how she feels and don't care about her feelings seem to think that the only mistake was her not using contraception. Since Bristol is a better judge of the mistake she made, she is telling other teens that the mistake was having sex. Why do "women's rights" groups think that the mistake is the baby? Who are they to judge?
Posted by: hippie at January 27, 2010 4:42 PM"Why do "women's rights" groups think that the mistake is the baby?"
Which "women's rights" groups are you referring to? Perhaps you could provide some sources for us. We in the pro-choice movement have no problem with Bristol's "choice" - and that is the key word here folks - she had the "choice" to make her own decisions regarding her pregancy. Not every teen mom has the same kind of family support system and resources that Bristol does. We in the choice community celebrate women making their own decisions. Please stop with the BS about feminists saying that Bristol (or Sarah) should have aborted because that's a lie.
Posted by: Artemis at January 27, 2010 5:47 PMAnd re the Tebow ad - it's great. Let's encourage women to ignore their doctors about a problem pregnancy and just pray to Jesus. But fine, let them have their ad. But when we present an ad with the coathanger as our leitmotif with the message to keep abortion safe and legal - I don't want to hear any weeping and gnashing of teeth.
Posted by: Artemis at January 27, 2010 5:56 PMGo for it, Artemis!! Can't wait to see it!!
Posted by: carlaSome people might think it to be an advert for a Mommy Dearest remake.
Personally, if it were adequately contextualized, I would think it to be an advert against infanticidal mothers who also happen to have self-harm issues, in which case, I'm right there with ya.
Posted by: xalisae at January 27, 2010 6:19 PMX,
Every time I see the wire hanger with the red slash mark through it I think of Mommy Dearest!! No More Wire Hangers Ever!!!
Who needs a wire hanger? Just go down to the plastic surgery/abortuary where a single mom of 4(well, 5 counting her unborn child)just died.
"We in the choice community celebrate women making their own decisions." Like Tim Tebow's mom right, Artemis?
Choice is only about one choice. Abortion.
Posted by: carlaArtemis @ 5:56 PM,
You can't scare anyone with talk of hangers anymore. Didn't you hear the latest from Carhart?
Jivin'J 1-25-10:
In a NPR interview, late-term abortionist LeRoy Carhart shared his opinion on "back-alley" abortionists who performed illegal abortions prior to Roe v. Wade:
"But I've always defended the back alley providers because most of them do a really decent job."
Worth repeating:
"But I've always defended the back alley providers because most of them do a really decent job."
- LeRoy Carhart
Artemis,
Please, this coathanger claptrap is tiresome.
90% or illegal abortions were done in doctor's offices. The remaining were done by midwives and nurses. A small percentage were self induced. Interesting that the mother of the late actor Frank Sinatra ran a lucrative illegal abortion business with an apparently good track record.
The death rate from illegal abortion was at an all time low the year prior to Roe. It had been steadily declining for years. Advocates for legal abortion were well aware of this but lied to the public about the supposed death rate from illegal abortion. Apparently you are one of the people they suckered.
Better antiobiotic, IV and blood transfusion therapy, as well as improved surgical and aspetic technique would account for much of the declining death rate.
Its also been speculated that the death rate was so low because doctors, nurses, midwives, etc., performing illegal abortions were considerably more careful. A dead or injured woman meant a prison sentence.
Something interesting Artemis. Years ago my brother was a police officer in a large city. He told me what made a police officer highly suspicious that a car had been stolen or the driver had engaged in some kind of illegal activity.
The driver was over cautious. Not one mile over the speed limit. The safest people to be on the road with. I suppose if you have stolen a car, or have stolen property or a dead body in the trunk, the last thing you want is to attract attention of law enforcement, so you will be very cautious about doing anything to attract attention.
Probably helps us better understand why an illegal abortion may well have been safer than a legal one.

Amen Mary! Very profound.

The Tebow's story said she had a Choice. Abort the baby or not. The woman made her 'Choice'....shouldn't pro-choicers be happy she was able to have a choice on the matter?
I guess not, huh? As Carla said, Choice is only CHOICE if it ends in abortion.
Posted by: RSD at January 28, 2010 12:59 PMArtemis: if the pro-choice-to-kill-babies crowd is really as open-minded as you say, and they really are only interested in people making the choice that is best for them, and they really are okay with whichever choice is made....
Show me just one pro-choice-to-kill-babies website where everyone respects Michelle Duggar's right to have her nineteenth child, and to possibly have more, and no one implies she has made a wrong decision in continuing to have children.
At least we don't try to pretend that we think all choices are equal.
