Two IVF embryos ended up triplets

I would be lying through my teeth if I said I wasn’t a little overwhelmed… but I also know that with the help we have, there’s never going to be a baby not being held or a toddler not being played with. It will all work out. ~ Sarah Imbierowicz discussing the surprise news of […]

British fertility campaign accused of using scare tactics

And European countries are actively promoting higher birthrates. Did you see that British fertility campaign photo [above] of the old-looking pregnant TV presenter saying she wished she’d have kids earlier? Scare tactics. ~ Sarah B. Weir debating with colleague Beth Greenfield about the push for having children earlier in life rather than later, Yahoo Shine, […]

Parents: IVF screening to detect abnormalities “saved us heartache”

After standard treatment at the US clinic, the couple had 13 IVF embryos to choose from. The doctors cultured the embryos for five days, took a few cells from each and sent them… for genetic screening. Tests showed that while most of the embryos looked healthy, only three had the right number of chromosomes…. Based […]

Grandma gives birth to grandson – “incredible moment” for daughter

It was definitely the most incredible moment of my life… I never imagined I would be in a delivery room with my mother in this particular situation. ~ Sara Connell describing the moment that her mother, Kristine Casey, gave birth to her own grandson via in-vitro fertilization, as discussed on an episode highlighting infertility, Katie […]

Expectant dad upset IVF got him twins

As horrible as this might sound, we found ourselves wishing these twins away. We considered a reduction for about 30 seconds. (That’s essentially an abortion of one twin, not both.) If you thought that IVF involved playing God, a reduction felt beyond brazen — Machiavellian, even. Give us a reason, we thought, as we had […]

Sci-fi or sick? Harvesting eggs of aborted little girls

IVF is already riddled with moral conundrums, not the least of which is the “selective reduction” abortions that often follow an overly successful IVF procedure (where a woman aborts one or more of multiple babies she has unwittingly conceived). There is also the problem of fertilized human zygotes (aka little humans) who are not selected […]

Kourtney Kardashian offers to be Khloe’s surrogate

I want her to be happy and I feel like she wants a kid so bad. I take back some of the things I said to you thinking you were crazy about carrying her child. I still think it’s a huge decision, but I understand why you’d want to do that for your family. ~ […]

$10,000 offered to surrogate to abort her baby

“They were both visibly upset. The mother was crying,” she remembers. “They said they didn’t want to bring a baby into the world only for that child to suffer. … They said I should try to be God-like and have mercy on the child and let her go.” “I told them that they had chosen […]

Man raised by lesbians: Gay families causing “human rights crisis”

rolopez1I published some articles about being the product of gay parenting and received hundreds of e-mails from around the world pleading with me to fight against a growing human-rights crisis caused by the LGBT movement….

[T]hey were children of sperm donors, troubled adoptees, people agonized by the baby-farming in India and elsewhere, gays horrified at what is being done in the name of “gay families,” religious people, atheists, people who know for whatever reason that buying babies and erasing fatherhood or motherhood is not the fruit of love….

IVF embryos being discarded at “industrial” rate

Official statistics show that almost half of embryos used to help women conceive through in vitro fertilization (IVF) were thrown away during or after the process…. Since August 1991 more than 3.5 million human embryos have been created, producing only 235,480 “gestational sacs” or evidence of successful implantation. Of the embryos created, almost 840,000 were […]

Woman who donated eggs now can’t conceive her own child

I know he’s loved, and that makes me happy. It’s just that I’d do anything for the chance to experience the happiness of motherhood myself…. I’d produced 19 healthy eggs at the age of 31, so I didn’t for one second believe that we’d have any trouble conceiving. But every month, when I discovered I […]

Bill and Giuliana Rancic pregnant via surrogate

This was our last stop. This was it. We had those two embryos that we had banked prior to learning about the breast cancer, and with the medicine she was on (which meant Giuliana will have to wait years before trying to personally get pregnant), this was our last effort. The prayers were answered. ~ […]

Obama administration kills embryo adoption program, funds abortions for detainees

I don’t know how much more of this man I can take. This is an evil, evil administration.

President Barack Obama has cut funding to the embryo adoption program that President George W. Bush launched by in 2002. According to the Washington Times, March 4:

National Organization for Women co-sponsors DC showing of “Eggsploitation”

Well, this makes me happy. The National Organization for Women is doing the right thing here, focusing on a very real reproductive injustice – the exploitation of young women for their eggs. If you haven’t yet seen this compelling movie, here’s the trailer…

Author of “Our Bodies, Ourselves”: Post-menopausal pregnancy “irresponsible”

Nancy London finds that she’s in the awkward position of having to reverse herself. As a co-author of Our Bodies, Ourselves, published in 1973 (the year the U.S. Supreme Court upheld Roe v. Wade), London was among those who argued – convincingly – that biology was not destiny, that women should take control of their […]

Pregnancy more serious than “ordering a pizza”

Pregnancy should not be the same as ordering a pizza. America is accustomed to having options, which is great, but a line needs to be drawn somewhere. … IVF patients… should sign a contract ahead of time agreeing they will have both babies and give one up for adoption if they do not want both. […]

I wouldn’t have aborted the twin had s/he been conceived naturally, not via IVF

If I had conceived these twins naturally, I wouldn’t have reduced this pregnancy, because you feel like if there’s a natural order, then you don’t want to disturb it. But we created this child in such an artificial manner – in a test tube, choosing an egg donor, having the embryo placed in me – […]

Bill & Guiliana Rancic hoping “3rd time’s a charm” with IVF

Giuliana Rancic has unsuccessfully gone through IVF twice now in hopes of having a baby, but she’s not giving up just yet. The E! News and Fashion Police host tells me that she and hubby Bill Rancic [past winner of The Apprentice] will give the treatment another go. “We’re definitely going to do IVF again […]

Octomom’s an octomess: “I hate the babies.”

I hate the babies, they disgust me… My older six are animals, getting more and more out of control, because I have no time to properly discipline them. The only way I can cope is to lock myself in the bathroom and cry. Sometimes I sit there for hours and even eat my lunch sitting […]

Gestational surrogacy explained

After years of trying to get pregnant, exploring the range of fertility treatments, all unsuccessful, our journey led us to gestational surrogacy: we make a “baby cake” and bake it in another woman’s “oven.” ~ 30 Rock actress Elizabeth Banks via US Magazine, March 30

Word has just been received that the film Eggsploitation has been nominated for Best Documentary in the 2011 California Independent Film Festival. Eggsploitation, produced by The Center for Bioethics and Culture, “spotlights the booming business of human eggs told through the tragic and revealing stories of real women who became involved and whose lives have […]

Céline Dion names twin sons

(A very pregnant Dion and family are  pictured right on the September 2 cover of the French magazine 7 Jours. Click to enlarge.) Since we’ve been following singer Céline Dion’s trials as she attempted to grow her 8-yr-old frozen embryos to maturity in her body, I thought I’d provide closure with great news. From CBS […]

My friend Patte Smith, a sidewalk counselor in FL, posted these amazing pictures on Facebook yesterday. The first is of Luke and Grace on Day 3 after they had been created in a petri dish. At this stage of their lives they were 8 cell embryos. Click to enlarge… The 2nd photo is of Luke […]

Sexploitation symmetry: Come here to conceive, go there to incubate

From Slate, August 23: Reproductive tourism in India is now a half-a-billion-dollar-a-year industry, with surrogacy services offered in 350 clinics across the country since it was legalized in 2002. The primary appeal of India is that it is cheap, hardly regulated, and relatively safe. Surrogacy can cost up to $100,000 in the US, while many […]

40 yrs+ celebrity IVF pregnancies: Celine Dion and Kelly Preston

Three weeks ago 47-yr-old actress Kelly Preston and 56-yr-old actor husband John Travolta denied.) Then a week ago 42-yr-old singer Céline Dion didn’t exactly quash rumors a few days ago that she’s pregnant as well.) Congrats to all. We’re praying for healthy babies. Even though we recently observed in 4443-yr-old Michelle Duggar that women over […]

J Lo: IVF a no-go

For any wondering (and I admit I was curious), Jennifer Lopez conceived her fraternal twins the old fashioned way – and wouldn’t have had it any other way. Some recent comments of hers on that topic are making quite a stir. From February issue of Elle magazine. “Just because of the way I was raised. […]

“Jon & Kate Plus Eight” ends

My poor daughter. I do wonder what psychological damage reality tv has wrought. As a teen she love love loved Jon & Kate Plus Eight. And last night we saw its demise, thanks also to divorce. I’ve written a couple times about the Gosselins (here), of particular interest to us because Kate conceived both sets […]

Kate + 8 – Jon; Jon delays divorce

I agree with Pop Eater: It’s a busy day in Gosselin-ville. Jon Gosselin is trying to slow down – if not halt altogether – his divorce from Kate Gosselin, telling In Touch Weekly exclusively: “I regret my conduct since Kate and I separated…. I used poor judgment in publicly socializing with other women so soon.” […]

Oldest mom dies, orphans toddlers; fertility treatment implicated

The boys are now here and blessings. But this is just another warning against defying one’s biological clock as well as injecting oneself with large, prolonged doses of artificial female hormones to unnaturally procreate. From

OctoMom and Mom brawl on tape Part II

In Part II of here. In this video, Nadya’s mother aggravates me more than Nadya, the opposite reaction I had to video I. It comes clearer Nadya isn’t the only one with issues. Angela disparages Nadya’s every thought and idea with a skeptical look. Not to say Nadya’s thoughts aren’t undeserving of skeptism, but Mom […]

Japanese woman implanted with wrong offspring

The title of the article incorrectly described the preborn human as an “egg,” and the article itself did not do much better, calling him or her a”fertilized egg.” But I digress; the Drudge is spotlighting

Suleman octuplets III

Read previous posts here. Nadya Suleman, mother of octuplets born January 26, gave her 1st interview today, to Today’s Ann Curry. Most notable is Suleman said her fertility doctor implanted 6 embryos, and 2 apparently split. About the number implanted Nadya gave the same pro-life response as had her mother: “I wanted them all transferred. […]

Suleman octuplets I

This is a hard one. I used to be fine with in vitro fertilization. I even gave a friend hormone shots several years back to mature several eggs at once for IVF. Then I found out the Catholic Church opposes IVF. And when the Catholic Church says something on the pro-life issue I listen. I […]

Ruby Rae SpiegelAmy and Ester, the Florida high school students at the center of “Dry Land,” have a time-sensitive problem to solve: Amy’s unwanted pregnancy. Unlike the women recently played by Jenny Slate in the indie film “Obvious Child” and by Julia Stiles in the Off Broadway romance “Phoenix,” Amy isn’t an adult, so her mother would have to be told if she sought an abortion. She opts instead for a do-it-yourself approach and asks Ester to help.

“She’s just trying to get rid of this pregnancy,” said Ms. Spiegel, whose inspiration for the play was a New Republic article about DIY abortions. “It’s, like, on her body, and it’s a ticking time bomb. She just wants it out of her.”

~ Yale student playwright Ruby Rae Spiegel describing her recent play, Dry Land, New York Times, August 28
