In this AFP article today, Hillary Clinton sounds positively pro-life, discussing women's rights in terms of the right to become pregnant, to carry one's baby to term, and to fulfill natural maternal instincts to care for one's newborn, all free of duress. Alas, we know Clinton also includes the freedom to kill one's baby as a woman's right, which makes the sentence I've underlined particularly worrisome. Interesting that she didn't mention it here...
US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, taking a break from nuclear disarmament issues, discussed women's rights and her love for husband Bill during a visit Friday to a South Korean women's university.
Some 2,000 students at Seoul's Ewha University gave Clinton a standing ovation as she entered the hall and frequently interrupted her speech with applause.
"No country has yet achieved full equality for women. There is still a lot ahead for us to make sure that gender equality becomes reality," Clinton said in her speech.
"Part of my mission as the secretary of state is (making sure) the United States is committed to enhancing the rights of women."
Clinton said society still makes it very hard for women to balance family and work, and called for more flexible working hours.
She recalled her own experience working for a law firm when male colleagues pretended not to know she was pregnant.
When she gave birth to Chelsea, she received a call from a colleague asking when she was coming back to work. Instead, she said, she proposed maternity leave and he failed to understand the concept.
her speech sounds prochoice, if anything, to me. No mention of making abortion illegal.Posted by: asitis at February 20, 2009 2:38 PM

Yeah, that is unfortunate. I can't believe garbage like this still goes on. No wonder there is still this stigma about a woman being both a mom AND working. Silly.Posted by: Bobby Bambino at February 20, 2009 2:43 PM

Not pro-choice for the baby, Asitis. Never has been, and never will be.
Pro choice for the woman Bethany. You know that.Posted by: asitis at February 20, 2009 3:45 PM

Bobby, we certainly are agreed on that. I suppose that as a white guy I've never run into anything similar.
I've got a buddy in the online gaming community in Romania, and guess what he had today?
Or should I say his wife had...? Their first child, a boy. : )Posted by: Doug at February 20, 2009 4:18 PM

Hillary is a typical liberal politician. She will say anything to appease the particular audience.
One thing is quite clear. She believes that the government should force employers to pay women for whatever "choice" they make. If a women chooses life, she believes employers must pay for unlimited maternity leave and then pay for day care when the employee returns.
Hillary believes the only reason woman don't go back to work after a baby is the cost of going back to work taking so much of the income from going back to work.
My sister is a loony lefty who left a job paying over $100K a year when the cost of working took more than half of her take home.
Don;t be surprised if Hilary's kindred spirits in the house and senate propse taxing stay at home moms to pay for day care for women who "decide to be productive again." We can't have women staying home and baking cookies.
Why else would we see studies reported in the news that put the "value" of stay-at-home moms at a minimum of $46,000? It goes right in line with the DNC mantra that a penny not spent is a penny earned and therefore must be taxed. Why else would they fight elimination of the marriage tax saying "two can live as cheaply as one?"
Hillary Clinton is going to wreak havoc and Obama will have to shut her up. In fact, I wouldn't doubt it if she gets canned before her term is up.
It's not her place to go into another country and rile up the citizenry especially in a country like Korea where people are not immune to very, very emotional responses..
She's paid to be an ambassador, not a trouble maker.
If she wants to do that she should resign and do it on her own dime, not ours.Posted by: HisMan at February 22, 2009 11:20 PM
