First, from Kathryn Lopez at National Review Online this morning:
This Is what the White House and Nancy Pelosi are hearing in their left ear. From the abortion lobby.... NARAL president issues the following statement...
Pro-choice Americans stand strongly alongside our allies in Congress who are resisting Mr. Stupak's outrageous last-minute attempts to hijack health-reform legislation. The public has grown tired of this unnecessary drama and wants to see Congress move forward with a bill that is not tainted with Stupak-like provisions. Negotiations with Mr. Stupak are a non-starter for NARAL Pro-Choice America and pro-choice women and men across this country.
1) Dems don't have the House votes.
2) Stupak is insisting on the Senate voting on any abortion "fix" - enrollment corrections bill - first, which is the only guarantee it is real.
3) The feminists are screaming.
4) The WH/Pelosi have nothing compelling to offer to get a) the feminists to hush up and b) enough of the Democratic caucus in the Senate to sign onto whatever Stupak asked for.
.... this all could be falling apart for Barack Obama right now.
Whatever happens, this is remarkable - 1) Yes, that the WH/etc. is so condescending toward the will of the people here. But also that 2) with all their power in Washington, the WH/Pelosi find themselves in this situation - having to make some pro-life Democrat from MI satisfied - in late March 2010.
Then this, from FireDogLake.com...
Pro-choice members of the House are in revolt tonight, threatening to kill the health care bill after Nancy Pelosi agreed to give Bart Stupak a vote on a concurrent resolution which would tie his language on abortion to the Senate bill and substitute it for the Nelson language.
Marcia Pappas, President of New York Now, released an open letter encouraging the women in Congress to oppose the deal:
March 19, 2010
An open letter to every woman in Congress:
Today, women in the United States are fighting for their lives. You must fight too! A woman's right to have safe and legal abortion is about to be traded away.
We are asking all of you fight like you have never fought before. Tonight, It has become clear that the our Democratic President Obama, Democratic Speaker of the House (Nancy Pelosi) and Democratic Leader (Harry Reid) are trading away women's lives.
Every woman in Congress should MAKE HISTORY AND WALK OUT ! This is your chance to stand up for what is right! Forget politics, forget saving your seat! You must take a chance!
If you sit back and allow the passage of the health care bill with "Stupak," women in America will not vote for another Democrat.....myself included. Because there will essentially be no difference between the Democrats and the Republicans.
What will it be? Will you all go down in history following the boys, or will you finally stand up for what is right? It's up to all of you. We elected you because we believed that having women at the table would make a difference. Don't let us down.
Marcia A. Pappas
According to The Hill, "were the resolution to pass the House, it would instruct the Senate clerk to change the healthcare bill to reflect Stupak's more restrictive language to prohibit federal dollars from going toward abortion coverage."
There were 41 members of Congress who signed Diana DeGette's letter saying "we will not vote for a conference report that contains language that restricts women's right to choose any further than current law." Although the language in the Senate bill most certainly goes way beyond current law, the members have thus far stayed silent and DeGette has not released the names on the letter.
Jan Schakowsky, Mike Capuano, Mike Quigley, Carolyn Maloney, Judy Chu and Louise Slaughter have publicly said that they signed the letter. Betsy Markey and Anne Kirkpatrick are also signatories.
Yes, because clearly, anything short of abortion on demand payed for with our tax dollars is a betrayal of my sex. NOW cannot really be unaware that many of the people who disagree with them have two X chromosomes. They're acting on the "saying it makes it so" theory. I wonder how the pro-life women of Congress and the SBA List will respond.
In any event, they cannot do walk out and then turn around and accuse pro-lifers of destroying health care reform. The reform's failure will be squarely on the heads of the pro-abortion lobby.Posted by: Kelsey at March 20, 2010 9:05 AM
I thought this bill was not about abortion. :)Posted by: Susie at March 20, 2010 9:16 AM
"Today, women in the United States are fighting for their lives. You must fight too!
A woman's right to have safe and legal abortion is about to be traded away."
So I guess abortion is in this 'thing' that refuses to die.
Marcia Pappas the 'PRESIDENT' of New York National Association of [some liberal, lesbian] Women says it is.
"What will it be? Will you all go down in history following the boys, or will you finally stand up for what is right? It's up to all of you. We elected you because we believed that having women at the table would make a difference. Don't let us down."
"Following the boys"?
Do I detect just a smidgeon of sexist condescension?
Come on missies, MAN UP!
Demonstrate there is a difference between male and female politicians.
Gird up your loins and lean in way over the plate and take one right between the eyes from a hundred mile an hour fast ball thrown underhanded by a lady pitcher named 'justice'.
She ain't just playin chin music, she's a bean ballin it big time.
Revolution is not a tea party!

Checks and Balances in action folks!
What's becoming increasingly clear - this is not about health at all, because if it was, Stupak would easily get the correction added.
Who said politics is not a spectator sport?

I could marinate in the irony:
"How dare Stupak crash this bill over abortion. It will be 'on his hands'"
"If the Stupak measure passes, we will crash this bill over abortion."

"I'd like to see one of these women that support the misery of abortion hold one of these babies born from a botched abortion in their hands then watch it slowly die. If they had no change in heart or remorse...then their consciences must surely look like that labored breathing from a dying baby."Posted by: Mary Lawrence at March 20, 2010 11:54 AM
No wonder Princess Pelosi, the most despised woman in America, is looking in desperate need of botox injections these days.
She has been given her marching orders by der Fuehrer, er president, and like the first der Fuehrer "no" is not an option. Look at documentaries and you will see the terror of German officers who were given ultimatums, win impossible battles or face der Fuehrer's wrath.
It sounds like the princess has been given the same option.
Prolifers this has been what I have been praying for that God would expose the lies of Obama and the radical, leftist, pro-death politicians, the Dead Babies R Us crew.
Just read this letter of this pro-deather, Maria Pappas, New York NOW insisting abortion stay in this healthcare takeover bill. They are unraveling before our eyes, "outing themselves" and "coming out of the closet" showing their true colors, the color is red, the blood of innocent unborn babies.
"There is NO federal funding of abortion in this bill" stated by the President of the United States before a joint session of Congress. Reiterated or should I say regurgitated by Nancy Pelosi Speaker of the House. There MUST be a penalty for lying to the American people.
