Pro-aborts send coat hangers to Congress

Pro-aborts are planning to send coat hangers to 20 "formerly pro-choice Democrats" (I wish! I hope!) who voted for the Stupak/Pitts pro-life amendment in the House healthcare bill. Click to enlarge...

Were pro-lifers to attempt the same sort of gimmick we'd have a couple options - photos of hacked mothers being taken by ambulance from front alley abortion mills, or photos of hacked babies after being aborted. Click to enlarge...

By the way, the actual number of back alley illegal abortion deaths in the US?

NARAL, illegal abortions, coat hanger.pngAccording to the Journal of the American Medical Association there were 201 deaths in 1965 and 119 in 1970. Since abortion has been legalized, I'd venture to say at least as many mothers if not more die every year these days. We don't know because abortion stats aren't rigorously kept, thanks to liberal feminist and abortion industry influence.

The only surviving NARAL founder, Dr. Bernard Nathanson, now pro-life, has stated they simply made up their "10,000 annually" claim.

Comments:

If a woman can't get the public option to PAY for an abortion, WHY would a woman go to a back-alley abortion? Because it's FREE?

Furthermore, a back-alley abortionist is going to be a licensed front-door abortionist. Is he going to use a coat-hanger because the woman doesn't have coverage? This campaign makes NO SENSE.

And why is a coat-hanger abortion safer than carrying the baby to term and delivering him?

Wow. They really are pulling out the big guns(hangers)now! That is the best they've got??!!
Sad.

If they really, truely cared for women, doctors in their 'safe, sterile' abortion clinics would do the procedure for nothing, and then back-ally coat hangers wouldn't be neccessary. But oh WAIT....its a profit business masquerading under the guise of 'helping women'.

Posted by: Stephanie at November 16, 2009 10:51 AM

How stupid does a woman have to be to use a coat-hanger on herself? I'm sorry to be so blunt, but COME ON!!! Give the baby up for adoption. The adopting couple will often pay the cost of pre-natal care and will LOVE the baby!!

Posted by: Janet at November 16, 2009 10:58 AM

Stephanie, looks like you hit "enter" too many times...but here it is again:

"If they REALLY, truely cared for women, doctors in their 'safe, sterile' abortion clinics would do the procedure for nothing"

*I seem to remember medical students/ doctors giving away their services for FREE during Medical missions...and they cater to a whole range of medical issues...from cleaning wounds to pregnancy delivery...these are people who care.

Any woman who died from sticking a coat-hanger into her uterus died from a mental illness, not from an illegal abortion.

Posted by: Marie at November 16, 2009 11:03 AM

Someone should tell the pro-aborts that metal coat-hangers will not pass security. Plastic ones would look pretty dumb.

Good idea. To personalize it, address the letter to "Grandma" or "Grandpa" ( fill in the Congressman's name).

Aren't Coroner's Reports supposed to list cause of death? Why don't we have the actual number of women killed from abortion in the U.S.?

Posted by: Chris at November 16, 2009 11:11 AM

Just because people don't want to be forced to pay for someone else's abortion, desperate pregnant women everywhere are going to use coat hangers on themselves?? Yeah......right.

And we're the whack jobs.

This is an old strategy from 30 years ago. If this is the best the pro-aborts can do then I'm very encouraged! Nevertheless, we need to keep “friendly pressure” aimed at borderline politicians who may be vulnerable to PP intimidation.

Posted by: paula at November 16, 2009 11:22 AM

Chris,
A cause of death can be listed as sepsis or perforated uterus or infection or hemorrhage....

Posted by: carla Author Profile Page at November 16, 2009 11:24 AM

I'm 51 and I vaguely remember the days of illegal abortion. There was always a doctor in the African American community, I'm sad to say, who was willing to do them. I remember a female relative had one, I remember her sitting by the toilet bleeding and crying. I also knew of a pharmacist who would give women medicine that would cause them to abort very early in their pregnancies.

The coat-hanger stuff is lurid and intended to shock and inflame. I am very prolife, but the point I'm trying to make is illegal abortions DID happen, and some women WERE hurt by them. This is something that we have to face and not sweep it under the rug.

The criminal "abortionist" is not going to report a death as an abortion gone wrong. He/she will cover it up at any cost to save his... (you know what).

"This is something that we have to face and not sweep it under the rug."

Phillymiss,

I'm sorry to hear about your relative. I don't think anyone is denying these things happened. There are web sites full of stories of women who died by their own hands and the hands of abortionists. The pro-aborts are being disingenuous when they imply that the numbers will go back to those in the "olden days" if abortion is made illegal. Women have many more resources to find help nowadays if they find themselves with an "unwanted pregnancy".

"There are web sites full of stories of women who died by their own hands and the hands of abortionists."

The web site Carla linked to is one example.

Amazingly enough, in those statistics, as the years went on...abortion deaths dropped.

While the rest of the world was happy about these, pro-choicers were pissed.

And, amazingly enough, these deaths dropping might have been related to expanded access to prenatal care, women being allowed to have children outside of marriage, better medicine including antibiotics, giving women more power in the world, and social improvements.

Look at that pro-choicers: making the world a better place really will get rid of abortion.

*Gasp!*

So sad that they wont give it a rest. They make themselves look so silly! There has been an ambulance call 3 times in 3 months at one of our local death mills. Safe? Nah! Just a quack with a license to kill. BTW, I'm pregnant y'all!!!!!

In all fairness, the number was higher than 200. Doctors generally wanted to give women the benefit of the doubt, and not list "abortion" as their cause of death unless he was absolutely sure. According to Christopher Tietze, a leading expert on abortion trends, the number of women who killed themselves trying to obtaion illegal abortions in 1965 was probably under 1,000.

Look at how quickly the rates were dropping because of improvements in medical technology. If we made abortion completely illegal in the US today, the number of women who would kill themselves trying to obtain them would be similar to the number of people who kill themselves mowing their lawns every year.

The "coathanger", or "back-alley abortions" argument is an urban legend, albeit an incredibly popular one. The media needs to start talking about this, and dispel this rumor once and for all.

Posted by: Heather at November 16, 2009 1:08 PM

Vannah,

You're right. If I'm not mistaken, the huge drop in the numbers of illegal abortion deaths from 1940 to 1970 is mainly due to the development and implementation of antibiotics. I'd be willing to bet that the numbers of deaths following all medical procedures that carried a risk of infection dropped as well.

Posted by: Janette at November 16, 2009 1:24 PM

Oooh. 4!! Why stop there, sweets?? Catch up to the Duggars!! :)

"Any woman who died from sticking a coat-hanger into her uterus died from a mental illness, not from an illegal abortion."

I agree. Anyone capable of using a sharp household item to perform a painful, invasive surgery on themselves is suffering from severe psychological distress and needs to be admitted in a psychiatric intensive care unit (where people are placed following suicide attempts and/or self-mutilation).

Just to make all aware while we are on the topic. I cannot watch that liar Whoopi Goldberg on THE VIEW for any great legnth of time. Whoopi insists that she induced and completed her own coathanger abortion at the age of 14. This is why she fights so hard to keep abortion rights legal. She went on to have the abortion procedure done legally about 8 or 9 more times as an adult. It seems that it must have been more of a birth control choice for her:/

Posted by: Heather at November 16, 2009 1:41 PM

I'd also like to know just how Whoopi managed to pull that one off. A 14 year old kid did this with no medical attention required after the fact? No bleeding or uterine perforation? Something about her story stinks.

Posted by: Heather at November 16, 2009 1:47 PM

I don't get it - Pro-aborts presumably want to paint themselves as the more rational ones, yet they are arguing that they are also capable of mutilating themselves as a response to a natural bodily function, that, if they gave the baby up for adoption, would only likely incovenience them for a few weeks.

This reaction is absurd, it's like saying - we're gonna do something really crazy to ourselves if you change things, but listen to us now because we're smarter. Huh?

Posted by: Mark R at November 16, 2009 3:34 PM

While the rest of the world was happy about these, pro-choicers were pissed.

Good point, Vannah pro-choicers are always talking about making abortion "safe, legal, and rare," but yet when there is a drop in the abortion rate, it seems that they are annoyed by this. Why?

"The pro-aborts are being disingenuous when they imply that the numbers will go back to those in the "olden days"

The antis can't have it both ways. They cannot want to criminalize abortion and also make the outrageous claim that illegal abortion is only slightly less safe than the medical, clinical, and surgical procedures performed today.

It would be wise not to get into a scientific debate with us pro-aborts. Moral debate, of course. But if you start dealing with numbers, statistics, and science we win every time.

Posted by: Dhalgren at November 16, 2009 7:17 PM

Dhalgren:

So...I take it the "it magically changes into a baby when wanted" argument is still going strong then?

Because I've never actually heard a single pro-choicer argue this only say, "Well, arbitrary definitions have never been a problem historically...if you take out Rwanda or the Jim Crow South or Darfur..."

Thanks for clearing that up for me, buddy. :)

No sweat- your logic is safe and sound. Magical Rainbow Babies! :D

If abortion were not free, or better yet, illegal, most women would just not abort. All of my friends who have had abortions (some more than once!) have stated that if abortion had been illegal they would NOT have aborted but had their babies. One friend even cried angrily that abortion was an option and screamed she WISHED it had been illegal so her parents couldn't force her to abort (she was 19 and living at home).

The only woman I've ever heard admit she shoved a clothes hanger into her uterus, is Whoopi Goldberg.

The pro-aborts have to send coat hangers cause they got nothin else! We have the video proof, the photo proof, the testimony proof, the Biblical proof...they got....hangers.

Sydney,
Totally agree with you!! Most of my post abortive friends and I would NEVER have had abortions if they had been illegal. We would have been spared much pain and have living children today.

Has anyone ever heard someone say they regret NOT having an abortion?

-------

Win every time? Umm... No.

1) You can't claim scientific evidence and the supposed high ground that science provides for your case without illogically rejecting overwhelming scientific evidence that abortion kills a unique living human person at an early stage in human development.

2) Science does not build on ignorance of plain facts, and most pro-aborts simply ignore them, cherry-picking whatever supports their position.

3) Every argument must be made based upon objective evidence. This provides a tangible basis for the philosophical meanings we derive from such evidence. Science just shows what is, while philosophy shows us what it means. When it comes to metaphysical matters - what it means to be a person, you must look to the physical presence alone, because ultimately this is what abortion destroys. You'd have a hard time proving your personhood after your body was shredded.

The most rational arguments are those who accept the humanity of those in the womb, because the evidence is overwhelming. However, these arguments play upon the metaphysical meaning of personhood and rights and in the end simply excuse discrimination against another human being by claiming a bodily autonomy argument. In this case such people claim their tangible body and the associated rights, while denying those exact same properties to others. The only way they can do this is to invert justice and reject mercy. That, my friend, is hell.

No one wants to be subject to absolute power wielded unjustly and without mercy.

And even if the annual back-alley death toll was 10,000 annually, what is that in comparison to the 1 million babies who die annually from legal abortion in America?

Posted by: Bekah Ferguson at November 17, 2009 9:14 AM

Secondly, lots of people die from back-alley drug dealing violence. Should we make drug-dealing legal so that it will be safer to deal drugs? It's backwards logic.

Think about all the prostitutes who die from the dark back alley world of illegal prostitution. Afterall, couldn't these women say its their body, their choice to have sex for money? Where is NOW crying out for the prostitutes? Why don't they send a pair of platform highheels and fishnets to every Senator and Congressperson to call attention to the plight of women in the sex for money industry? HYPOCRITES! All those feminists are hypocrites! They're only interested in you if you have a baby they can kill.

Posted by: Sydney M at November 17, 2009 10:00 AM

I find it interesting that pro-aborts will send coat hangers to support their agenda but will not also include pictures of mutilated and mangled babies. If they were truly campaigning for actual human rights, why not show both sides of the issue? This is fair reporting.

However, when you utilize propaganda, you use disturbing images and you load language to suit your own ends, which, "pro-choicers" (notice how the word has been "loaded" to change public perception and make abortion sound as if it's a cause for women's rights)have done.

Pro-aborts would claim concern for woman yet show not a shred of compassion for female babies being torn limb-from-limb, burned, suffocated--or, in partial-birth abortion having their brains sucked out--all without pain killers.

Posted by: Alternative Health at November 17, 2009 10:18 AM

Sydney:

There are actually a lot of people who advocate the legalization of prostitution. I don't know any personally, but you could look it up on the internet- some people feel that it is an autonomy argument and a morality argument.

Or of the mutilated bodies of women physically injured, maimed, and killed by legalized abortion. The back-alley butchers of yesterday have moved to the front office.

Sydney M.,

"Why don't they send a pair of platform highheels and fishnets to every Senator and Congressperson to call attention to the plight of women in the sex for money industry? "

I hate to say this, but I think it's true. Unfortunately, many Congressmen have personal knowledge of the "money for sex industry" and extramarital affairs, for that matter. Perfect reason to support legal abortion, no?

Posted by: Janet at November 17, 2009 11:40 AM

Regarding statistics on abortion mortality, check out the RealChoice blog - realchoice.blogspot.com - and the book "Lime 5" by Mark Crutcher for more information. Many times death certificates are made out in such a way that the actual cause/manner of death does not state that it was from abortion. The ones that DO mention abortion often are not accurate in specifying legal or illegal abortion. Not only that, the CDC does not keep track of it very well.

In the "old days" of abortion, before legalization, the VAST majority of illegal abortions were done by legitimate doctors, just on the sly since the "procedure" was illegal at the time. Generally these doctors would be using the same "safe, sanitary" procedures they use now. After antibiotics were invented and other basic medical advances were made, I don't think an "illegal abortion" provided by your friendly neighborhood M.D. would have been any more dangerous than any valid medical procedure done by a doctor openly, either before or after legalization.

"Illegal coathanger abortions" did happen but they were a lot rarer than pro-"choice" folks would have us all believe. And I would agree that for a woman to perform a coathanger abortion on herself, she would have to be having some variety of mental issue similar to other people who mutilate themselves.

And I think any person seeking an abortion by any means could be better served by receiving real help and hope from the community as a whole. I agree that offering real, actual help to people in crisis is better than just giving a band-aid/duct tape "fix" that really doesn't fix anything, just makes it worse in the long run.

Posted by: army_wife at November 17, 2009 11:51 AM

I know there are those who support legalized prostitution. But my point is why doesn't NOW spend as much time campaigning for the right of women to have sex for money as they do campaigning for women to have the right to kill their children in the womb? i mean if they are really the national organization of/for WOMEN then why not tackle all women's issues? All they seem to be obsessed with is abortion.

Posted by: Sydney M at November 17, 2009 11:58 AM

army_wife,

I recall reading about these abortions done on the sly. Groups like NOW were furious that self-taught female abortionists were virtually shut out of the abortion industry after abortion was legalized. The lost the power that they had acquired. Most of the abortions were done in the hospitals after that.

The history of the abortion movement in this country is so sad. Some women thought they were doing a good thing for women. Others were brought in because they were bored and looking for meaning in their lives. Unfortunately, as studies have shown, women are not any happier now than they were then.
