To give us a break from the daily grind...
Strong summer thunderstorms rolled through Chicago Wednesday [June 23], towering up to 63k feet and unleashing 80 mph wind gusts in the Windy City. The powerful weather system also doled out 15k lightning strikes per hour at its peak. A camera stationed west of the Chicago loop area captured an incredible moment when lightning struck the city's 3 tallest buildings at the same moment. Mother Nature doesn't mess around....

Pretty cool, but I think the camera would have to be positioned north of the Loop, not west, to get that shot.Posted by: len at June 25, 2010 12:06 PM

This guy is talented! Check out his other vimeos too.
I'm reminded of the Republican Presidential debate where lightening keeps interrupting Rudy Guillani while giving his position on abortion. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ibqwKb4cCsg&feature=PlayList&p=C983D561852541C9&playnext_from=PL&playnext=1&index=33Posted by: slugbuster at June 25, 2010 9:12 PM
Now that's art!Posted by: myrtle miller at June 25, 2010 11:45 PM
Hancock is farthest north and is on the right, so this is a photo from the west. Sears/Willis tower is farthest south and is on the left. Reminds me of a similar picture of downtown St.Louis I have seen.
We here in Chicago have a lightening free forecast for a few days!Posted by: sharon at June 29, 2010 11:56 AM
Well, the photographer said it was taken from August and Milwaukee, which is most definitely north, and about four blocks from me as well. Last time I checked my location I was north of the loop, but whatever.Posted by: len at June 29, 2010 12:07 PM
I'm guessing you mean Augusta and Milwaukee. Not that it's a big deal....but as I see it, that intersection of streets is pretty much a straight line west of the Hancock Tower (the northernmost of the three buildings) so in a way you're both correct. The photo was taken from a slightly northwest position relative to all three buildings, IMHO.
Did you see Shimala's photo of the full rainbow arcing the towers? You are so fortunate to be so close to such an amazing sight!! Pretty cool.Posted by: Janet at June 29, 2010 1:08 PM
