UPDATE, 10:33a: American Papist has posted a close-up of the shield:
Per CNSNews.com, April 28:
President Barack Obama is expected to wear the traditional doctoral robe featuring the cross and prayer of the Virgin Mary when he speaks at... Notre Dame next month, White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs told CNSNews.com White House Correspondent Fred Lucas on Monday....
"I honestly don't know what the dress code is for that day. I can assume that the president would wear what one traditionally wears at that commencement," Gibbs told Lucas during Monday's White House press briefing.
Notre Dame spokesman Dennis Brown told CNSNews.com earlier this month that the university expects Obama to wear the robe.
The question was posed after the monogram "IHS," which symbolizes the name of Jesus, was covered up when Obama spoke at Georgetown University, a Jesuit university. Georgetown officials said the "IHS" was covered at the request of the White House.
Photo left, courtesy of the White House, is of Laura Bush speaking at Georgetown in 2006 with "IHS" visible; center photo is close-up of "IHS"; photo right shows "IHS" covered for Obama's recent speech. Click to enlarge...
I have no doubt that the Virgin Mary will be weeping that day :(Posted by: Allison at April 30, 2009 9:12 AM
I suppose this can only be good, right? Having a cross and a prayer that close to him may allow him to open himself up to graces. Who knows.Posted by: Bobby Bambino at April 30, 2009 9:45 AM
Does anyone know what the "prayer of the Virgin Mary" is? Is that just the Hail Mary? Or something else. I've never heard that term before.Posted by: Bobby Bambino at April 30, 2009 9:47 AM
A robe has much significance.
For instance, the redeemed will receive a "robe of righteousness".
The robe is a symbol that the wearer is taking on the characteristics, the values, the morality, the mission, the very nature of the institution or authority which bestowed the right to wear it.
This is why this whole fiasco is so blasphemous. The Catholic Church claims to represent Christ here on earth and claim to be His oracle. In effect, by allowing Obama to wear this robe, they are saying that Christ is pro-abortion.
I can't tell you in this short space of time how utterly evil this action is. May God have mercy on Notre Dame and the Catholic Church.
If I were a Catholic, I would have to seriously consider where my shepherds were taking me, i.e., to hell or to heaven.
Choose this day whom you will serve.Posted by: HisMan at April 30, 2009 9:54 AM
Hey Bobby, it's a few words from the Salve Regina:
‘Vita, Dulcedo, [et] Spes,’
Interesting that the first word is vita, eh? BTW, how's the Mrs doing? She's due any day, right?Posted by: Fed up at April 30, 2009 9:56 AM
Hisman, its not the Catholic Church allowing this as many Bishops are speaking out against his commencement appearance. Its a "catholic" university that invited him.
300,000 signatures were delivered this week to Father Jenkins and members of the board. Hopefully something good can happen soon....Posted by: LizFromNebraska at April 30, 2009 10:01 AM
Ah yes, thanks Fed Up. "Our life, our sweetness, and our hope."
Yeah, she's due Saturday! But she could go any day... I'll keep y'all updated. God love you.Posted by: Bobby Bambino at April 30, 2009 10:07 AM
A new baby on the way, just in time for Mother's day! That's wonderful. Saint Gerard, please help Bobby's wife when her delivery time comes so they may have a safe delivery and a healthy new baby.
Is Gianna excited about having a baby sibling?Posted by: LizFromNebraska at April 30, 2009 10:23 AM
A big ole swig of holy water just before waltzing out onstage should provide a decent amount of grace.
I would prefer a dunk in the holy water pool. Head to toe.
In a graduation, the robe is generally not an element of religious symbolism. The head wear and the robes are different for bachelors, masters and doctoral candidates. Of course the Honored speakers do not wear the robe of the undergrads.
Regarding Barry Hussein, he really couldn't care less about what others respect.
Oh thank you so much Liz. We're not positive if Gianna exactly knows what is about to happen, but we do ask her "where's the baby?" and she points to (or slaps) mom's belly. So she has a vague notion of something, i think.Posted by: Bobby Bambino at April 30, 2009 10:31 AM

I agree, xppc. That crest looks like it uses 3 words from an ancient prayer as a motto and not as a prayer per se.
St Gianna Beretta Molla, please pray for Bobby, his family, and the medical staff who will be caring for them very soon!Posted by: Fed Up at April 30, 2009 10:58 AM
Have you seen this article by Kathleen Parker?
Basically, she says Obama needs to not go.Posted by: Lauren at April 30, 2009 11:06 AM
traditionally, you wear the robe of the school from which you received your highest degree. Obama would wear Harvard's robe, then, and hood. But, it could be that the honorary degree he's receiving trumps that.
If ND wants him to wear it, I don't see how he can decline.Posted by: Hal at April 30, 2009 11:09 AM
The school symbol or patch is fine. I suspect if he spoke at Texas, he should leave their longhorn symbol in place. If He spoke in Kansas and they had a Jayhawk or Duke had a blue devil patch, it is the schools robe and not the whitehouse crown and robe.
Remember "It is all about me" when narcissists look at details.Posted by: xppc at April 30, 2009 11:10 AM
I doubt it. He'll probably require it be removed or covered like he did at Georgetown.Posted by: Kristen at April 30, 2009 11:17 AM
Some muslims have a high regard for Mary. Since O has lived in muslim regions, he may not be as uncomfortable with the robe as some suggest. Don't know if it's true, but I've read that he carries a miraculous medal in his pocket.Posted by: Fed Up at April 30, 2009 11:35 AM
The Obamanator carries a Miraculous Medal????
The inscription on a Miraculous medal is about the Immaculate Conception of Mary. Obama doesn't even believe in life at conception; how the hell can he claim to believe in an Immaculate Conception?
"Have you seen this article by Kathleen Parker?"
"Obama might consider following Glendon's lead. Although he supports choice, the president also recognizes the moral complexity of those decisions. Out of respect for pro-life Catholics and their beloved institution, he should politely bow out."
It's interesting that Kathleen Parker is pro-choice but still thinks Obama shouldn't go.Posted by: Janet at April 30, 2009 12:49 PM
Truthseeker, google "obama miraculous medal" and you can find some articles. A French magazine asked him what he carries in his pocket and that's how the story started. I'm not suggesting that he believes in any doctrine connected with any of the items in his pockets!Posted by: Fed Up at April 30, 2009 1:00 PM
"I have no doubt that the Virgin Mary will be weeping that day :("
But She will be smiling on the hundreds of protestors who will be there in defense of LIFE.
For those who are not familiar, here is the prayer containing the words on ND's crest.
Hail Holy Queen (Salve Regina)
Hail, holy Queen, Mother of mercy,
Our life, our sweetness and our hope.
To thee do we cry,
Poor banished children of Eve,
To thee do we send up our sighs,
Mourning and weeping
In this valley of tears.
Turn then, most gracious Advocate,
Thine eyes of mercy toward us,
And after this our exile,
Show unto us the blessed fruit
Of thy womb, Jesus.
O clement, O loving,
O sweet Virgin Mary!
Pray for us, O Holy Mother of God,
That we may be made worthy
Of the promises of Christ.

***If the Pro-Abortion Obama recieves an award and platform to speak at (so-called "Catholic" University) Notre Dame, then going forward Notre Dame should just be called...
"South Bend University".***

@ Janet: Yes, you are right, and I hope that her prayers join with all those in protest for the conversion of the Presidents' (both Jenkins and Obama) hearts.Posted by: Allison at April 30, 2009 3:09 PM
Notre Dame is truly fortunate to have the President speak at commencement, and the vast majority of it's students agree. Some might have problems with a few Obama policies, and that's perfectly acceptable - that's America. But to those who feel the sky is falling, just focus on the office, not the man. Regardless of personal beliefs, we can all respect the office of the President and what it stands for.
Do that, and it will be a glorious day for all.
I have problems with a few of Obama policies. It's perfectly acceptable to disagree with his proabortion, proinfanticide policies. This is America. I respect the office of the President of the United States of America.Posted by: Carla at April 30, 2009 3:24 PM

Well in that case Ethel, it makes it Ok. Thank-you.

Wouldn't it be nice if the president did the same? Wouldn't it be nice if he respected all the citizens of this country instead of putting his opponents on watch lists and belittling those who speak out against his policies? Nice try, "ethel".Posted by: Fed Up at April 30, 2009 3:39 PM

I love the Memorare too.
OK for us 'catholicly' challenged folks who took only one semester of Latin some 40 years ago, what is
the 'Salve Regina'
and what does
‘Vita, Dulcedo, [et] Spes,’
translate to in English?
The closest I come is Save Queen and sweet life and ?
yor bro kenPosted by: kbhvac at April 30, 2009 9:50 PM
Vita, Dulcedo, [et] Spes
Life, sweetness, hope. With the nostra (so similar to the French notre, the Spanish nosotros, etc -- thus vita, dulcedo, spes nostra) it's "our life, our sweetness, our hope."
To my best knowledge, Salve Regina is "Hail, holy Queen."
But I'm not Catholic. Not even Catholically challenged. Maybe Catholically challenging....Posted by: Alexandra at May 1, 2009 4:55 AM
Uh, I meant nuestro, for the Spanish one. Pre-coffee brain is never very good for even the easiest of questions.Posted by: Alexandra at May 1, 2009 5:10 AM

Did that birth certificate of his ever turn up?Posted by: Louise at May 1, 2009 7:07 AM
Good morning, Alexandra,
Good job. I'm impressed!
Alexandra nailed it on the translation.
They evidently just used the key words in latin to fit on the emblem which, like Alexandra said would be the English equivalent of the first lines of the prayer:
Hail Holy Queen Mother of Mercy
Hail our life, our sweetness and our hope...
(Intresting side note: in the musical "Evita" they sing the Salve Regina...but insert the name "Eva" in there...for Eva Peron...because of the regard her people had for her.) (All for theatrics of course...)Posted by: Mike at May 1, 2009 11:20 AM
It doesn't surprised me that the bad apples at Notre Dame are concerned about what Obama wears to the commencement exercise. After all, 1 Samuel 16:7 says that while man is concerned about outward appearance, the Lord looks at the heart.Posted by: B. Johnson at May 5, 2009 6:24 PM
