Senate pro-lifers fight abortion industry pork in Omnibus bill

Pro-life stalwarts in the US Senate are battling provisions in the Omnibus spending boondoggle that includes pork for the abortion industry.

Wicker Amendment

  • Would restore language in the Kemp-Kasten provision, which I previously discussed, meant to keep US taxpayer money from funding organizations that participate in coercive abortions and sterilizations. The proposed language change to K-K would give $50 million to the United Nations Population Fund, which the State Department has determined funnels money to China's anti-woman one-child policy. Here is Sen. Tom Coburn's (R-OK) excellent floor speech about this yesterday:

    UPDATE, 12:30p: The Wicker Amendment just lost 39-55. Members voting yes included 36 Republicans and 3 Democrats (Bayh, Casey, Nelson of NE). Members voting no included 52 Democrats, 2 Independents and 3 Republicans (Collins, Snowe, Specter). Members not voting were Conrad, Johanns, Kennedy, Landrieu and Sessions.

    DeMint Amendment...

  • Would remove the earmark in the Omnibus bill for the "Affordable Birth Control Act." I've also written on this before. The Bush administration removed a loophole that allowed Planned Parenthood to buy birth control pills at cheaper prices and take advantage of higher income women by reselling them at high prices. At present PP is forced to buy bc pills from pharmaceutical companies at the same price as everyone else, so it can't gouge.

    Vitter Amendment

  • This one's easy to understand. "None of the funds appropriated under this Act shall be made available to Planned Parenthood for any purpose under title X of the Public Health Service Act." Title X is the government program that provides contraceptive funding. This bill simply wants to stop PP from getting any taxpayer money. It got a surprisingly high vote tally when introduced by Rep. Mike Pence in 2007.

    These amendments may be voted on today, so please call your senators through the Capitol switchboard at 202-224-3121 and tell them to vote aye for all. Also be sure thank Sens. Jim DeMint (R-SC), David Vitter (R-LA), and Roger Wicker (R-MS).

    Happy Reality? You say you're pro-choice. This by no stretch of the imagination is the most anti-choice policy out there. It defies even your logic to support taxpayer funding of UNFPA.

    I read the article, and frankly I don't understand how an organization that gives to China's family planning "health-care" can say they do not support China's one child policy. Women are getting sterilization and contraception through them because of the pressure they are under living in this government. How can you separate the two?

    oh puh-lease! UNFPA supports the FORCED abortion in China if a woman is pregnant with a second child, especially if the 2nd child is a GIRL. There are women who are dragged out of their homes and forced to have abortions. Ultrasounds, instead of being a joyful time, with a look at a baby, are used to determine sex. If the baby is a girl, the child is forcibly aborted.

    Women are even forced to undergo sterilizations they don't want.

    UNFPA is BAD for the WORLD and doesn't promote safe child bearing. What bunch of bantha fodder!

    The clip that you posted of Doc. Coburn is actually from a pro-choice website, where they refute the very claim that he is trying to make. Basically Tommy boy is lying.

    I was heartened and pleasantly surprised to see some connection between Sean Hannity and efforts to curb the distribution of more abortifacient drugs, even if he's just using his show to highlight pork given to one of the most blood-drenched liberal special interest trough gorgers, Planned Parenthood. I'm not afraid of maintaining the social safety net, but the underhanded means of tucking knowingly abhorrent earmarks for Auschwitz, USA, Inc. (aka PPF) is what we need to be extremely diligent in rooting out everywhere and evertime we can.

    Has Hannity had a change of heart, or is this just a means of showing what a "dogged opponent of pork" he is, even if it means using people he'd trash in another moment without giving a second thought to the damage his selective morality insofar as birth contol has caused in the past; to wit his rants against Human Life International.
