State ranking on Life

Yesterday Americans United for Life released its 5th annual state ranking of most and least pro-life states.

Click here for criteria. AUL grades in major areas: abortion restrictions, bioethics (human embryo experimentation, cloning), end of life, and healthcare provider conscience rights.

Michigan topped the list for the 3rd year in a row:

Abortion border fence

There is much debate betweeen those taking an incremental approach to stopping abortion and those taking a wholistic approach (all or nothing). AUL is a chief proponent of incrementalism. From yesterday's press release:

"Until all the pieces are in place to make the overruling of Roe a realistic possibility and until the truth has replaced misinformation about abortion," said Clarke Forsythe, AUL's President, "laws that put fences around the abortion license and highlight the negative impact of abortion on women are imperative. And those laws are being passed in the 50 states."

The ranking also seeks to answer the question: Thirty-five years after Roe, are we making progress to restore a culture of life in America?

"We are making progress, state by state and law by law. In states that have passed these types of laws, the abortion rates have declined by up to 20% over the past 10 years," responds [Denise] Burke [AUL's vp and legal director]. "Further, these laws highlight the significant dangers -- physical, psychological, and relational -- posed by abortion."

Comments:

Almost all the best pro-life states are in the Bible belt.

This is what was stated for Illinois:

Protection for the Unborn & Newly Born
a) Under Illinois criminal law, the killing of an unborn child at any stage of gestation is defined as a form of homicide.
b)Illinois defines nonfatal assaults on an unborn child as a crime.

Jill, at the risk of being branded a racist, I would like to know if the statistics can be shown of the realtionship between these best/worst states and their percentage of African-American population to White population.

My guess is that you will find that of the states listed as worse theirs is a higher ratio of AA to W.

I believe one of the keys to end the abortion of infants in the womb is to make African-Americans aware of what abortion does to their race and vote out those politicans who support abortion. Abortion decimates them and this is consistent with the vision of Planned Parenthood's founder, Margaret Sanger.

I for one, grew up in New York and my best friends were and are African American. In fact, the reason I am an now an engineer is because when I was five years old, my best AA friend, who was 10 years old became my big brother and got me excited about mathematics. He is now a Senior Scientist at the Xerox Corporation.

Apart from being just plain wrong, this is another reason I am totally against abortion because is a Hitler type of race control. If you don't believe me, just look at the numbers.

Barack Obama is a traitor to his race and the Democrats lie the Clintons could care less about African Americans. The proof is in their actions, not their lying words.

It's about time that Afircan Americans wake up to this fact and vote all Democrats out of office. The future of their race in this country and the hard work and sacrifices made by their ancestors depends on it.

LOL, "future of their race depends on it." That's not overstating the case at all.

African American women have just as much right to terminate a pregnancy as anyone else.

Oh, and btw, "My guess is that you will find that of the states listed as worse theirs is a higher ratio of AA to W."

I don't even have to go to the internets to know that your theory is false. Virginia, Mississippi, Michigan, all have much higher percentage of African Americans then Oregon, Alaska, Iowa, Vermont, New Mexico, etc.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
You do realize that African-Americans are the second-fastest growing demographic in America - right behind Hispanics but without the advantage of immigration?
White and Asian Americans have been reproducing at less than replacement level for almst two generations.
African-Americans as a group have been FAR more damaged by their 70% illegitimcy rate than by the number of abortions they CHOOSE to have.
HisMan: make African-Americans aware of what abortion does to their race.... Abortion decimates them....
Ahem - black Americans have a birthrate that is 10.5% higher than that for whites.
In 1950, blacks comprised 1 in 10 Americans. In 2005 it was 1 in 7.5.
What in the world do you see there that would make an African-American woman change her mind if she had an unwanted pregnancy?
MA is 39 on that list, must say the information was interesting, though much of it didnt strike me as bad (as I'm sure you are well aware by this point)
Woo hoo! NM made the top 10!
The sad thing is that there would be many more African Amercians in this country were it not for abortion.
The subtle racism is evident by the posts on this issue.
And no woman black or white should be able to make a decision on the fate of a human being. In doing so she plays god and will face the consequences the benefit of the infinite wisdom of the one true God, nor the strength to resist His just punishment.
We need all the infants we can get and to use any reason to terminate any one of them is heinous.
@ HisMan
"The subtle racism is evident by the posts on this issue."
And blatant racism of Asian Americans was on Jills last story but no one cared about that. I bet you just see Asian Americans as "disposable" and besides it makes you look better to be the white knight and stand up for them po' black folk. We sure is thankful mista.
"We need all the infants we can get"
why?
Posted by: Hal at January 16, 2008 11:50 PM
Let's put it another way, Hal.
Why do we need you?
Posted by: carder at January 17, 2008 9:32 AM
@carder
Hal was once an infant, so was I.
Just because you want to stop abortion doesn't mean every child is going to grow up to be a rabid pro-lifer.
Posted by: Jess at January 17, 2008 11:29 AM
Carder: Let's put it another way, Hal. Why do we need you?
You could say you don't, but it's not really an issue, now is it?
HisMan: The subtle racism is evident by the posts on this issue.
Oh for Pete's sake - I've seen similar arguments to yours for years, and what, really, therein would make a black woman with an unwanted pregnancy change her mind?
She doesn't need to increase the birth rate (already higher than that of whites) any more than what it already is. There is nothing remotely as important, there, as her own personal situation.
Doug
Carder, I guess that depends on what you mean by "we." You personally might not need me at all, but in general I think I'm a net gain for the world. I try to be at least.
But I don't understand your point. HisMan said we need all the infants we can get. I just don't understand why we need a lot more infants then we are getting. Seems like there are a lot around.
HisMan:
You have a point. But as I have found out talking with PCers outside of PP, they have no idea that the founder of PP (Margret Sanger) and the "birth control" movement was a Nazi Eugenist. Her whole purpose was to control the minority population bc she thought the were genetically inferior. She called them animals, ignorant, unintelligant and the chaft needed to be burned. So let's here it for the foundation of the Pro-Choice movement.
