Will (can?) the real Democrats please stand up?

From today's NY Times, on Pew Research Center opinion poll findings released Thursday:

The real import of these splits within the parties - and the problems they pose for Democrats - becomes apparent only when one seeks out the weight of the differing groups within each party.

Moderate and liberal Republicans constitute only 36 percent of the Republicans, according to Pew's findings, compared with the 62 percent considered conservative. The ideologically dominant group, in other words, is also numerically dominant.

For Democrats, it is quite different: 67 percent fall in the moderate-conservative category, while 31 percent qualify as liberals. The ideologically dominant group - certainly on abortion, less so on same-sex marriage - is the numerical minority.

The poll also found that only 31% of Americans want abortion "generally available," while 66% don't, prefering increasing degrees of stricter limits, up to and including a ban. The problems for Demcrats regarding abortion appear even worse when considering that even 33% of liberal Democrats fall into the latter camp.

Morning-After Pill Debate Leaves “View” Host Elisabeth Hasselbeck In Tears

A heated argument about the “morning-after” birth-control pill left co-host Elisabeth Hasselbeck in tears on “The View” yesterday on ABC.

The 31-year-old was so distraught she had to be comforted by “View” den mother Barbara Walters, 74, who was seen holding Hasselbeck in her arms after the show returned from a commercial break.

Hasselbeck found herself outnumbered after she voiced her opposition to the controversial contraceptive, which is said to be capable of preventing pregnancy if taken up to 72 hours after unprotected sex.

“These kinds of issues arouse the strongest emotions,” said Walters, introducing the subject.

“They do!” Hasselbeck blurted out. “My heart is, like, almost out of my chest right now!”

“Why?” asked co-host Joy Behar, 62.

Hasselbeck explained that she feels the pill disrupts pregnancies after conception, the point where she believes life begins. “It’s the same thing as birthing a baby and leaving it out in the street!” she declared.

Guest host Lisa Loeb, 38, then called Hasselbeck’s views “extreme.” And Behar questioned her sharply. “So you would say that a 12-year-old girl . . . who’s been raped by her father or her uncle should proceed to term because that’s ‘a life’?” Behar shrieked.

Walters then tried to lower the volume. “Elisabeth, calm down, dear,” Walters scolded.

“I can’t! This makes me so upset, Barbara!” Hasselbeck said.

As the segment ended, Hasselbeck was seen tearing a sheet of paper in half in frustration.

And when the show returned from commercials, it was obvious Hasselbeck had been crying.
