When I was a little over 18 weeks pregnant with my now pre-school child, I did a 2nd trimester abortion for a patient who was also a little over 18 weeks pregnant. As I reviewed her chart I realized I was more interested than usual in seeing the fetal parts when I was done, since they would so closely resemble those of my own fetus.
I went about doing the procedure as usual, removed the laminaria I had placed earlier and confirmed I had adequate dilation. I used electrical suction to remove the amniotic fluid, picked up my forceps and began to remove the fetus in parts, as I always did....
With my first pass of the forceps, I grasped an extremity and began to pull it down. I could see a small foot hanging from the teeth of my forceps. With a quick tug, I separated the leg.
Precisely at that moment, I felt a kick - a fluttery "thump, thump" in my own uterus. It was one of the 1st times I felt fetal movement. There was a leg and foot in my forceps, and a "thump, thump" in my abdomen.
Instantly, tears were streaming from my eyes - without me - meaning my conscious brain - even being aware of what was going on. I felt as if my response had come entirely from my body, bypassing my usual cognitive processing completely. A message seemed to travel from my hand and my uterus to my tear ducts. It was an overwhelming feeling - a brutally visceral response - heartfelt and unmediated by my training or my feminist pro-choice politics.
It was one of the more raw moments in my life. Doing 2nd trimester abortions did not get easier after my pregnancy; in fact, dealing with little infant parts of my born baby only made dealing with dismembered fetal parts sadder.

Comments:
Heartless and without a conscience and pure evil.
the word psychopathic comes to mind when thinking abortionists can actually get away with feigning LOVE for children. Not just abortionists either Hal. Post-abortive men and women without regret who say they love children are that same way too, just to a lesser extent. Wouldn't you agree?
truthseeker: you are quite right. This IS pure evil. It is diabolical.
How could a woman pregnant with her own child do this to another mother and another child. It is sick. It is depraved.
Yet even this was not enough to move this heartless woman to stop committing abortions.
And people say there is no hell. :(
The point is that, visually and viscerally, doing an 18-week abortion is different from doing an eight-week abortion. Removing a microscopic fetus and gestational sac is visually and viscerally different from removing what looks like a fully formed but small baby. Though I focus on D&E here, similar difficulties hold true for second trimester medical abortion.
funny how this doctor never considers the issue any deeper but only on a "gut"reaction level.
Scientifically and philosophically there is NO difference between a 4 week and 18 week fetus. Both are human, both are biologically alive. Developmentally they are different in the same way a newborn is vastly different from an 8 year old child who is vastly different from a 15 year old.
The difference is when one is wanted, they then become human. How capricious! And how very very evil.
Hers was a "gut" reaction, and for me, that typically means that you inherently KNOW it's wrong, despite how you consciously try to spin it. The subconscious always knows.
This, I believe, is why so many post-abortive women struggle with depression, drug addiction, etc, and yet remain in complete denial of the consequences of their abortions. The conscious mind says "I'm fine," but the subconscious says, "Oh no, you're not."
Posted by: Kel at October 7, 2009 9:43 AMI kept hoping at the end of this she would say she turned from the horror of what she was doing. Her own kicking child couldn't even convince her of the evil. God was impressing upon her in a VERY REAL WAY the evil of what she was doing and she continued.
God help us.
Her little baby kicking, her eyes streaming tears... and she ignored it all.
Because what abortion does, really, is turn our lives, ourselves, into the sum of our working organs. Tears no longer mean pain: now they are reduced to a function. Her conciousness becomes a separate entity from her body.
It's inhumane, the way abortion makes people see each other. Like parts. All parts.
Posted by: MaryRose at October 7, 2009 11:55 AMHow can she even talk about it? "Oh, I pulled off the leg" What the hell? Seriously, think about that for a second. She ripped off the limb of a living (or perhaps recently murdered) human being. She continues to do so.
Imagine the horror of being ripped apart piece by piece.
God help us.

Posted by: Janet at October 7, 2009 3:13 PM'Her fetus'.
She might as well be referring to her Gucci shoes or Prada purse.
There are some gender specific mono-syllabic expletives that come to mind when I read this 'self' promoting detached clinical self analysis.
[It is a viceral response to a cold cruel act of barbarism. If the assailant were male I am sure some similar gender specific language would also come to mind.]
She is not 'insensitive'. Her unanticipated and reflexive tears demonstrate her sensitivity. She just doesn't care. The 'other' womans fetus is less valuable than her 'fetus'.
This person's willful denial of reality has almost produced a self induced schizophrenia.
But she does not have a 'mental illness'. She has a 'sick mind.'
She is as self absorbed and self centered as a crack whore 'jonezin' for her next fix.
I have some sympathty and compassion for the crack whore. She knows what she is doing is self destructive but she is a slave to her addiction.
The 'abortioneeress' cannot resort to the refuge of the crack whore.
The murderess is lucid, educated and independent.

Posted by: kbhvac at October 7, 2009 5:57 PMI agree with EVERYONE who posted here...ALL good points. It just turns my stomach to think 'how could she grasp that tiny, precious little foot in her forceps, and STILL 'separate the leg'??? That statement ALONE makes me want to..I don't even know..cry..vomit...It just sounds so EVIL. And to think, at the same time, she was carrying LIFE inside her!
Posted by: Pamela at October 7, 2009 9:58 PMshe called her own baby that was growing inside of her, a "Fetus". Obviously she couldn't contradict her "profession" and call her child a BABY!
And as I said in the other place, this quote sickens me to no end.
Posted by: LizFromNebraska at October 8, 2009 8:00 AMHer demonic diatribe should be read from every pulpit in America this weekend followed by a fiery sermon convicting congregations for their apathy allowing this torture and genocide to continue in our neighborhoods for 36 years.
Repent and wake up America!
Posted by: Ed at October 8, 2009 8:22 AMJust wanted to add that I agree. This is really sick and evil. How can she call herself a doctor? And this is healthcare?
Keep up the fight for those who can not fight for themselves.
Posted by: Lovethemboth at October 8, 2009 9:19 AMAttention chica who wrote this piece:
Firstly, "fetus" is a medical term. It's from Latin, just like all living things get their names from Latin.
Second, he or she was never "your fetus." Children aren't their parents' property no matter how much you think that you own the world and the world owes you because you're an abortionist.
Posted by: Vannah at October 8, 2009 12:27 PMI Read The Entire Article. I Am Sick In My Spirit after reading the "Demonic Account of The BloodLust" of The Sociopathic Person With A M.D. Jesus Mary and Joseph ,I Love you Very Much. Please Spare The Babies Who Are In Danger Of This Genocide Of Abortion,Lord Have Mercy. It Was Very Difficult to Read This Discription of The Genocide from The Mind Of A Serial Killer!
Posted by: markie at October 8, 2009 1:51 PMShe continues on to describe that abortion is a form of violence.
Consider the gender difference in committing violence as shown in the Milgram experiments.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Milgram_experiment
Charles Sheridan and Richard King hypothesized that some of Milgram's subjects may have suspected that the victim was faking, so they repeated the experiment with a real victim: a puppy who was given real electric shocks. They found that 20 out of the 26 participants complied to the end. The six that had refused to comply were all male (54% of males were obedient[25]); all 13 of the women obeyed to the end, although many were highly disturbed and some openly wept.[26]
Some may like to think of women as more moral however women score lower on objective measures of morality. Academics quit doing experiments comparing women to men when the pattern became evident. Now it is the realm of theory. As a woman, I am not pleased to report this, but it is important to be honest.
Women on average score a level 3 (conformity) on Kohlberg stages of moral development. Men on average score level 4 (law and order). Jesus, Buddha are estimated from written accounts to be level 6 (universal ethical principles).
The pro abortion crowd is so obviously amoral in its clear commitment to a position that makes even proponents uncomfortable. The woman clearly is committed to going against her own feelings. It is like she is trapped in an abusive relationship of her own making.

"Second, he or she was never "your fetus." Children aren't their parents' property no matter how much you think that you own the world and the world owes you because you're an abortionist."
Important ethical principle life vs. property.
Vannah,
Take it a step further, and let her know what "fetus" means in latin ;)
"offspring, bringing forth, hatching of young"
Fetus=baby
Posted by: MaryRose at October 8, 2009 3:35 PMYikes this is one of the most sickening things I have ever heard, a pregnant abortionist, mutilating a baby the same age as hers. Tears running down her face (I wonder why?) as she sits on a stool between a womans legs up in sturrips, her feet covered in puddles of the baby's and the mother's blood, let me tell you this is a bloody, gory mess. Regular D&Cs are bloody enough, this is much worse. We need to find a way to get the word out. God help us, we need to stop this. This is sick, nauseating, barbaric and criminal. If someone was caught doing this to an animal, people would be outraged, but it is legal and "a right" to do this to a innocent unborn baby. Michael Vick went to prison for dog fighting and dog torture but innocent unborn babies "need not apply" for protection.
Posted by: Prolifer L at October 8, 2009 8:16 PMWhen are we as a society going to open our eyes to the evil that is involved in abortion. Babies are much more important than any animal. Yet I see ASPCA commercials saying poor animal cannot speak for themselves, and we need to be there voice. Where's the commercial for the unborn babies. I am not rich, but I would take everyone of them if I thought it would make a difference. The problem is it wouldn't. It would be "too hard" for the mother to give up her baby to someone. It's much easier to rip it to shredds. It all just makes total sense. I am just amazed at the blatant torture of the unborn that many people just call choice. I am heartbroken. i just do not even know what to do.
