As a p.s. to my previous post, I just remembered I wanted to include this excerpt from the MSNBC video:
Announcer: Mother and fetus had separate surgical teams. To save his life, doctors will have to operate on Garrett through his mother's womb, a place doctors once feared to go.Dr. Oluyinka Olutoye: The womb has always been a protected - you know - sacred area that was beyond the reaches of man. To actually have access to the womb now, to be able to go in there and actually manipulate and intervene.... [voices trails off]
Comments:
In one breath, he's a fetus and the next breath he's called by his name....

Those breaths are coming from two different speakers (see bold print).

no, there not.
Posted by: jasperCammie, as jasper indicated, no. The announcer called the preborn baby a "fetus" and "Garrett" back to back.
Posted by: Jill StanekThis type of surgery is amazing. It just saddens me that our society can recognize the value of some children at this stage of development, and not other.
Since when did our parent's views about us determine our nature?

Anyhow.. why does it (fetus having a name) matter?
