The Battle of Fitchburg begins: Planned Parenthood getting federal stimulus money to open new shop
UDPATE, 1/30, 7:02a: Hot Air has a good post on this growing controversy.
1/29, 11:44a: Of course. Why am I not surprised?
On January 23 and 25 I posted the following as our Quote of the Day:
Once we have a chance to meet with people and discuss how we are part of a solution, we win friends and supporters. I think it is common that people don’t want protesters and those types of things that sometimes occur when we go into a community, but as soon as anti-choice folks realize we don’t provide abortion services there, they don’t protest.
~ Oh? Planned Parenthood League of MA CEO Dianne Luby (pictured right), commenting on the controversy surrounding the move of a Fitchburg PP to a “highly visible location at 391 Main Street,” according to NewsTelegram.com, January 23
I had no direct knowledge that pro-lifers would pitch a fit, I just knew no pro-life group anywhere would ever let an aborting or feeder PP into their community without raising the roof.
But I had no idea of the backstory. Kudos to bloggers The Other McCain and Da Tech Guy for staying on top of it….
A January 21 SentinelandEnterprise.com story let the cat out of the bag:
The PP League of MA will open [the] office… this spring, with the goal of reducing the area’s high teen pregnancy and sexually transmitted disease rates, according to the agency’s chief executive officer, Dianne Luby….
The organization is planning to sign a lease on a Main Street building, though Luby declined to give an exact address while it’s still under negotiation. [Photo from protest, right, shows pro-lifers know the address.] An architect has been hired to redesign the space for business.
“We want to be on Main Street in Fitchburg. We want to be in a location that’s easily accessible along major transportation routes….” Luby said….
Abortion services will not be offered, because PP of MA is opening the Fitchburg office using federal grant money it received in December, which carries the stipulation that abortions will not be provided, Luby said.
Of course it is irrelevant whether a PP shop aborts or not. If not, it simply refers to 1 that does.
More from NewsTelegram.com indicating this was a federal government/PP insider deal all the way around:
The same services have been provided down the street through the Montachusett Opportunity Council’s family planning program for more than 25 years with federal grants administered by Health Awareness Services.
However… Luby said the organization found out Dec. 11 it was awarded a $387k competitive federal grant and would be taking over HAS’s contract to provide the services Jan. 1. PP also is investing $100k into the Fitchburg facility, she said.
HAS’s website states it is funded in part by the MA Dept. of Public Health, the Boston Public Health Commission, and the US Dept. of Health & Human Services, now headed by rabid pro-abort Kathleen Sebelius. So here’s 1 example – of how many don’t we know? – of the Obama administration subsidizing its pro-abort pals with our money.
Yesterday those pro-lifers Luby said wouldn’t protest, did….
Da Tech Guy has more photos of the protest organized by the way cool Fitchburg-Leominster chapter of Mass Citizens for Life.
Here’s what’s happening next. Notice the Democrats opposing PP’s expansion, from SentinelandEnterprise.com, January 28:
PP officials were invited to the Feb. 2 meeting after a contentious meeting last week during which 6 city councilors voted to draft a resolution urging PP not to come to Fitchburg….
State Rep. Stephen DiNatale [pictured left], D-Fitchburg, said the protest shows that PP “just raises a lot of issues for the community.”
“And we don’t have any say in it,” said DiNatale, who supported the City Council resolution. DiNatale plans to meet with other social services agencies in Fitchburg to get the facts straight on what types of sexual health services are already being offered in the city, in anticipation of the City Council meeting next week….
City Councilor-at-large Rosemary Reynolds [part of MA Democrats for Life] planned to participate with Mass Citizens for Life in Thursday’s protest.
“I am solidly, 100% behind their efforts to stem the tide here,” Reynolds said.
Reynolds said abortion is not the only problem PP poses for her; contraceptives can act as abortifacients, or abortion-inducing substances, according to Reynolds.
“We all know who PP is,” Reynolds said. “Before you know it, they’re dismantling your community.“
Da Tech Guy reported yesterday PP is now bailing on the City Council meeting.
And apparently PP does not need City Council approval to set up shop anyway.
But 1 goal of the protest yesterday would be to demonstrate to local merchants that PP would not be a good neighbor. PP’s presence would drive away business.
Stay tuned.

Roeder was just found guilty of the merder of Dr Tiller who is also guilty.
You must be kidding about anybody walking into the city of Fitchburg and setting up shop wherever they please. Am I still on earth? Just when you think you have heard it all pp walks in with a bag of federal funds and thinks they own the joint. Lord help me. Let pp go elsewhere to spread their venom. It is still the duty of parents to instruct their children as it is the parent who will pay the bill when something goes wrong, not pp. Watch out Fitchburg, I think we are being twisted like a pretzel. The dems have landed. I wonder if they have heard of the Bum’s Rush.
Fitchburg, MA residents:
There goes the neighborhood!

God bless the Pro-Life protestors. Looks like they have a LONG fight ahead of them.
Guess Diane doesn’t know MA prolifers all that well. We are a determined bunch. :)
GO CARRIE AND FRIENDS!!
Carla,
I wish I was there. I live 3 hours away. I witness at another MA abortion mill. I was speaking from experience. The authorities tried intimidating us over the summer and it didn’t work at all. We didn’t back down. I told them the more they bother me, the longer I stay. :)
Abortion is LEGAL in this country, and PP is not “an abortion mill.” And shame on you for using scare tactics and inflammatory rhetoric instead of having a reasonable dialogue with people who think differently from you.
If you don’t like abortions, DON’T HAVE ONE.
–Sue
Is that what you would tell to any of the thousands of human beings who have their lives ended through abortion? “If you don’t like abortion, DON’T GET ABORTED?”
All of you who don’t accept the right of a woman to choose what is right for her, do you pledge to take action by adopting, raising and supporting the babies? Have any of you thought of that? Don’t just protest, have solutions for the problem. You have no business protesting if you are not helping. Is it easy to say NO but what do you do about rising teenage pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseasses? PP is an opportunity for teens to learn about prevention and make better choices.
Fitch,
Abortion may be right for a woman but it doesn’t bode well for the baby. And yes, we care about women and their babies before and after they are born.
What are you doing to help pregnant women?
Hi Fitchburg.
“All of you who don’t accept the right of a woman to choose what is right for her, do you pledge to take action by adopting, raising and supporting the babies? Have any of you thought of that?”
Suppose my answer is a resounding “no.” How does it then follow that abortion does not take the life of an innocent human being?
“PP is an opportunity for teens to learn about prevention and make better choices.”

Oh, there’s opportunity all right, but it’s not for the teens: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cYaTywSDmls
PP’s business is abortion, abortion and more abortion, in an industry that rakes in half a billion a year.
Sue, abortion is a human rights issue. Would you have told abolitionists that if they didn’t like slavery, not to own slaves? I guarantee you are pro-your own life. Stop rehashing hackneyed phrases and face what you advocate: http://www.abortionno.org
