UDPATE, 1/30, 7:02a: Hot Air has a good post on this growing controversy.
1/29, 11:44a: Of course. Why am I not surprised?
On January 23 and 25 I posted the following as our Quote of the Day:
Dianne Luby, Planned Parenthood League of Massachusetts, abortion.jpg

Once we have a chance to meet with people and discuss how we are part of a solution, we win friends and supporters. I think it is common that people don’t want protesters and those types of things that sometimes occur when we go into a community, but as soon as anti-choice folks realize we don’t provide abortion services there, they don’t protest.
~ Oh? Planned Parenthood League of MA CEO Dianne Luby (pictured right), commenting on the controversy surrounding the move of a Fitchburg PP to a “highly visible location at 391 Main Street,” according to NewsTelegram.com, January 23

I had no direct knowledge that pro-lifers would pitch a fit, I just knew no pro-life group anywhere would ever let an aborting or feeder PP into their community without raising the roof.
But I had no idea of the backstory. Kudos to bloggers The Other McCain and Da Tech Guy for staying on top of it….

A January 21 SentinelandEnterprise.com story let the cat out of the bag:

The PP League of MA will open [the] office… this spring, with the goal of reducing the area’s high teen pregnancy and sexually transmitted disease rates, according to the agency’s chief executive officer, Dianne Luby….

The organization is planning to sign a lease on a Main Street building, though Luby declined to give an exact address while it’s still under negotiation. [Photo from protest, right, shows pro-lifers know the address.] An architect has been hired to redesign the space for business.
“We want to be on Main Street in Fitchburg. We want to be in a location that’s easily accessible along major transportation routes….” Luby said….
Abortion services will not be offered, because PP of MA is opening the Fitchburg office using federal grant money it received in December, which carries the stipulation that abortions will not be provided, Luby said.

Of course it is irrelevant whether a PP shop aborts or not. If not, it simply refers to 1 that does.
More from NewsTelegram.com indicating this was a federal government/PP insider deal all the way around:

The same services have been provided down the street through the Montachusett Opportunity Council’s family planning program for more than 25 years with federal grants administered by Health Awareness Services.
However… Luby said the organization found out Dec. 11 it was awarded a $387k competitive federal grant and would be taking over HAS’s contract to provide the services Jan. 1. PP also is investing $100k into the Fitchburg facility, she said.

HAS’s website states it is funded in part by the MA Dept. of Public Health, the Boston Public Health Commission, and the US Dept. of Health & Human Services, now headed by rabid pro-abort Kathleen Sebelius. So here’s 1 example – of how many don’t we know? – of the Obama administration subsidizing its pro-abort pals with our money.
Yesterday those pro-lifers Luby said wouldn’t protest, did….

Da Tech Guy has more photos of the protest organized by the way cool Fitchburg-Leominster chapter of Mass Citizens for Life.
Here’s what’s happening next. Notice the Democrats opposing PP’s expansion, from SentinelandEnterprise.com, January 28:

PP officials were invited to the Feb. 2 meeting after a contentious meeting last week during which 6 city councilors voted to draft a resolution urging PP not to come to Fitchburg….

State Rep. Stephen DiNatale [pictured left], D-Fitchburg, said the protest shows that PP “just raises a lot of issues for the community.”
“And we don’t have any say in it,” said DiNatale, who supported the City Council resolution. DiNatale plans to meet with other social services agencies in Fitchburg to get the facts straight on what types of sexual health services are already being offered in the city, in anticipation of the City Council meeting next week….
City Councilor-at-large Rosemary Reynolds [part of MA Democrats for Life] planned to participate with Mass Citizens for Life in Thursday’s protest.
“I am solidly, 100% behind their efforts to stem the tide here,” Reynolds said.
Reynolds said abortion is not the only problem PP poses for her; contraceptives can act as abortifacients, or abortion-inducing substances, according to Reynolds.
“We all know who PP is,” Reynolds said. “Before you know it, they’re dismantling your community.

Da Tech Guy reported yesterday PP is now bailing on the City Council meeting.
And apparently PP does not need City Council approval to set up shop anyway.
But 1 goal of the protest yesterday would be to demonstrate to local merchants that PP would not be a good neighbor. PP’s presence would drive away business.
Stay tuned.
