Lunch Break – Mayor Bloomberg not inviting Ground Zero heroes to commemoration
by LauraLoo
New York’s Mayor Michael Bloomberg says due to space constraints, first responders who heroically assisted others not only on 9/11/01 but for months afterward will not be invited to the 10th anniversary remembrance of the World Trade Center attack. Bloomberg has also excluded clergy from the commemoration ceremonies.
So uncool, Mayor Bloomberg.
Do you think the reason these two groups are not invited is really an issue of space, or is this politically motivated?
Speaking on behalf of first responders are John Devlin and Ken George:

No room? Where’re they holding the darned thing, in city hall’s mailroom?
Just call this a FAIL and move on. Bloomberg is a clown.
May I remind the good mayor that there were plenty of people, believers and non-believers alike, who were most likely praying to be saved from plunging to their fiery death.
But the Ground Zero mosque is just A O K.
What a miserable, miserable decision.
Excluding them to make more room for TERRORISTS, perhaps???
SHeesh!! Is he serious???
It’s like not inviting veterans on Vetran’s day at the Arlington Cemetery.
*I wonder where Bloomberg was on 9/11 ?
Bloomberg is the INOest of RINOs.
Well, where is the ceremony being held? Is it primarily for the families of victims – which would presumably be thousands of people? Are there going to be other ceremonies for the first responders?
Clergy? Pfft… go do a decent day’s work, for once.
Solemn public commemoration. Overwhelmingly religious society. Hello? Why shouldn’t there be clergy present, and at least one spokesman to speak on everyone’s behalf?
Victim number 1 was clergy, Doug. Father Mychal gave his life trying to bring comfort to the fallen.
Ninek: Victim number 1 was clergy, Doug. Father Mychal gave his life trying to bring comfort to the fallen.
Valid point, Ninek. So then I guess it’s where the line is drawn as far as “family of the victims.”
A member of my parish lost her sister on 9/11 in the attacks. People of all faiths lost family….jewish, christian, muslim, etc.
I don’t see how having a prest, a rabbi, and a minister and yes, even the clergy of muslims (is it imam?) would take up too much room?
There were Muslims who died in the attacks, but statistically they were few and often forgotten. (especially by the radicals).
And Doug, not to harp, but many clergy that I know personally work long hours helping with the food pantries, soup kitchens, shepherding their parish, visiting the sick and dying, presiding over weddings, funerals, baptisms, confirmations, counselling engaged couples, counselling married couples, etc. etc. If you think they don’t work, then you don’t know enough clergy personally. Finally, I add: Prayer is work. If you don’t think prayer is hard work, then you’re a lazy pray-er and need to step up your efforts. CC for example has no idea how long it takes to pray a novena for her. It’s no quickie prayer, I can tell you that!

Just how big are they? ;)

Ninek, that too is a valid point, and I was wrong in my generalized thinking, there. They’re not all – really, comparatively few are – just bigmouths looking for a soapbox.

Doug, you’re right about some of them being lazy, but I find that the Catholic and Orthodox clergy are the kind of guys that roll up their sleeves and work hard.
I was at a tent revival years ago where the preacher’s friend asked the audience to donate money so the preacher and his wife could go on a vacation to Hawaii. I’m not making this up! I was shocked at how these folks with their worn out shoes and their weathered skin (from hard work outside) were digging into their purses and pockets. The couple in question were richly dressed and made up, his suits were custom fitted, her nails manicured and every hair in place. These were clearly people who already had an easier life than the poor saps pulling money out to spoil them even more. If they took that money and went to Hawaii, I hope it rained everyday and they had to sit in a hotel room watching tv as if they were at home!
Have to laugh, Ninek… ;)
I shouldn’t generalize about priests or preachers – no doubt most of them are well-meaning and decently “hard-working” people, if we say that can really apply.
The relative few that I was thinking of were the talking-heads on TV, or those who really *are* in it just to be supported by others…
