When even MSM thinks the Democratic Convention is an abortion-palooza, you know it’s bad
When even liberals and the mainstream media think the Democratic National Convention has turned into an abortion-palooza, it must really be blatant.
Apparently even ideologically aligned reporters have their breaking point on abortion promotion. To wit…
Pro-abortion New York Times columnist David Brooks, after Day 1:
The one cavil I will have … is this speech has – [it] reinforces something we’ve heard all night, which was how much the crowd goes crazy and how passionate they are about abortion and gay marriage and the social issues. And tonight has been about that.
And to me it should have been a lot more about economics, growth, and debt. And that better be the job of day two and day three because they did not do it here.
How “crazy” was the crowd for abortion?
Pretty sick. More from NBC News:
[P]erhaps the most surprising part of last night was that it had more talk about abortion rights than in any Democratic convention since 1992, the first of many self-described “Year of the Woman” campaign years….
It’s clear Democrats and the Obama campaign were sending the not-so-subtle message that they believe the secret formula to capitalizing on the gender gap: talk about women’s rights and women’s choices. But that strategy also carries the potential risk of alienating Democratic voters who might oppose abortion rights.
And from the Washington Post’s Melinda Henneberger:
I have NEVER heard this much about abortion as in that hall last night, even if you throw in every homily of my life. Every other event is sponsored by [Planned Parenthood] or EMILY’s List. Then I moderated a panel for the outnumbered but undaunted pro-life [Democrats], where the panelists were asked by Salon what’s not to love about abortefacients and by Red State how come they like the infanticide president so much. America is evenly divided on this issue, but are ANY swing voters watching speech after convention speech?
And an op ed posted at CNN:
But the constant reference to abortion rights Tuesday night was at risk of coming off too strong. Abortion is a complex, painful issue that touches upon faith, gender and class.
It is not a matter that lends itself well to electioneering. More importantly, there’s a danger that in pushing the “war on women,” Obama may seem distracted from the real challenges facing America. Jobs, debt and health care are what matter most to voters in 2012. It’s still the economy, Mr. President.
That was just Day 1. On to Day 2, when the DNC aportion-palooza featured Planned Parenthood CEO Cecile Richards and Georgetown birth control beggar Sandra Fluke. From ABC News:
It’s impossible to understate the prominence that women’s issues, in particular abortion rights, has played on the convention stage over the last two days.
Tonight I’ll be surprised if abortion gets much of a mention. Democrat movers and shakers read the papers, too. If abortion is mentioned, it will likely be in code, “reproductive choice,” or “reproductive healthcare,” etc.
I think what we’re seeing is a perfect storm.
Democrats recognize abortion is no longer a winning issue, so they have panicked and are overreaching. If they say nothing, they lose. If they say only as much as they’ve ever said, they lose. So they must say more.
In addition, so many pro-life Democrats have been weeded out of the Party, thanks to the political ramifications of Obamacare, there is no voice of temperance left to stop abortion proponents from pushing their agenda full throttle.
The consequences of the abortion push so far? According to Reuters this afternoon:
So far, U.S. President Barack Obama has not received much of a bounce yet in popular support from the Democratic National Convention, a Reuters/Ipsos poll found on Thursday.
The latest daily tracking poll found Republican Mitt Romney still clinging to a narrow lead of 45% to Obama’s 44% among likely voters. Romney had led by 46% to 44% in Wednesday’s poll.
“We’re not seeing a sort of glimmer, at this point, of a bump,” said Ipsos pollster Julia Clark….
“I do think we probably will see a small bump still…. I think it will be very modest,” Clark said.
And then what do abortion proponents do? Polls were showing before the convention the “war on women” meme wasn’t helping Obama among women, it was, and, in fact, was hurting him.
Will they keep trying?
UPDATE 9/7, 7a: Further thoughts on the perfect storm…
There are also those liberals who honestly fear they are going to lose the “right” to abort and that Republicans are going to ban contraception, and who honestly believe Romney is out to “get rid of” Planned Parenthood (when he meant “defund”).
Then there is Planned Parenthood, which has embedded itself into the upper echelons of the Democrat Party, and which was motivated to push abortion at the DNC simply by greed. Obama has literally become the gatekeeper of taxpayer funding to PP and has plans through Obamacare to open the gate wider. We can be sure PP helped plan the DNC. As The Hill reported yesterday, “Abortion-rights groups have played a prominent role in the Democratic convention.”

The primary issue in this election is the economy.
Own it, Democrats. Abortion is YOURS. Never again can a person claim to be anti-abortion and a Democrat. It is IMPOSSIBLE. ”Democrats for Life”, your party HATES you and regards you as being worse than Osama bin Laden. The time has come to face facts – the Democrats have abandoned – no, DISCARDED – orthodox Christians from their ranks.
John, I wish that were true, but I think there are plenty of orthodox Christians still mucking things up in both parties. It’s just a bigger problem for the Republicans.
Democrats & abortion = Gollum & his “precious”.
Hal – feeling a little Anti-Christ tonight?
Why don’t you substitute Jews for orthodox Christians and see if your statement works.
Oh no – that might be anti-semitic…
Apparently you have no problem seeing orthodox Christians as being a problem. It’s not our ideas you disagree with – it’s our faith.
I read an editorial this morning from a somewhat secular Jew who was horrified at the DNC debacle regarding God and Jerusalem, and the attitude of the crowd. While he didn’t compare the Dems to the Nazis, their reaction raised a huge anti-semitic warning for him.
Add in “belonging to the government” and Hope and Change is now Heap on Chains.
Ok, I’m going to sleep. Flying pigs is where I draw the line.
Chris, i wouldn’t want a lot of religious Jews, Christians, or Muslims in any organization I was part of. But, living in America, it’s a fact of life. John said “orthodox Christians,” though, which I think he means conservative on issues like abortion and same sex marriage. As you know, there are Christians (and Jews) who are not in favor of outlawing abortions. You can say they’re not “true” Christians or “good Christians,” I suppose.
Hal, orthodox Christians are Christians who actually believe what their religion has taught on faith and morals for 2000 years. They typically don’t boo and jeer when God is praised.
It is good to see you openly expressing your hatred for Christ, though. As you know, I like it when the trolls are honest.
This whole convention has been one long train wreck.
From muslims and Native Americans arguing who got here first, to indoor vs. outdoor stadiums, to including/excluding/including again the word “God”, to Jerusalem, to whatever else they stumble on, this has not been a sight to behold.
Implosions like these don’t come very often…
It’s all out there for everyone to see. The Democrats are unapologetically and enthusiastically the party of abortion and gay “marriage”.
This whole event looks like it was choreographed by Planned Parenthood. A sex fest featuring Code Pink women running around dressed as their private parts and extolling the merits of free contraception and taxpayer funded abortion for all. There is even a “sluts vote” group at the DNC convention celebrating an unhealthy lifestyle that leads to a disproportionate occurrence of STD’s and abortion.
To my friends in the once great Democrat Party: How you have fallen! Our parents and grandparents who were once proud members would not recognize you for what you have become. You deserve to be soundly trounced in this election and go the way of other failed political parties. I believe this election will be a blowout of unprecedented proportions.
“the once great Democrat Party”
When was the Democrat Party ever great?
“Tonight I’ll be surprised if abortion gets much of a mention. Democrat movers and shakers read the papers, too. If abortion is mentioned, it will likely be in code, “reproductive choice,” or “reproductive healthcare,” etc.”
BINGO! Joe Biden at 9:05 central ..
* “… in an America where women can (once again?) control their own choices, destiny, and healthcare” *
* disclaimer on this almost quotation mark worthy quote
The D&C was not that pro-abortion for the television audience. For example, after Sandra Fluke last night there was very little mention of “reproductive rights.” And I don’t think Bill Clinton mentioned it at all. The D&C choreographers are crafty people. Appeal to the base off-screen, while trying to appear moderate on-screen.
At least Mitt alluded to the life issue. I bet BO will allude to “reproductive choice” but we will see.
JDC says:
When was the Democrat Party ever great?
The winds of political change never cease. The Democratic Party was great and powerful in the days before the Civil War…. When Whigs were a minority of rich Protestant elitists and the Democrats were the Party of the populist farmers and immigrants.
The Civil War saw the fall of the Democrats and the extinction of the Whigs. The Democrats rose again, when the Labor movement was truly needed and useful in America. They led America out of the Great Depression…. this was the Party of the Greatest Generation, defeating the Nazis and leaders of the Free World.
The Democrats were great when they were a coalition of liberals and conservatives, blending their ideological efforts toward the Common Good.
But just as the Democrats fell over the dividing issue of slavery, so they are no falling for the wanton killing of children. History will write a short story about them, if they do not repent and reverse this path.
I wonder — could the Pro-Life Democrats be persuaded to found a Liberal Life Party?
Fair enough Del, I admit I kind of took a cheap shot there.
Lifejoy, it was “health care choices that only women can make for themselves” at 10:57
We were close.
Well, the President’s wings have been clipped.
Definitely no soaring tonight.
His best part was when he talked about using some of the money spent on wars and defense spending on nation building.
His worst part was when he used the word “never’. Didn’t anyone tell him to cautious about when you use that word. It was funny because he had just been tlaking about comprise and bipartisanship. He used the word when he was talking about “never” giving into the GOP’s alleged tax cut for the wealthy. Winston Churchill used the word “never” in one of the few places that is acceptable to use that word: War. You could use the word “never” when defending the preborn so that abortion will ”never” remain the law of the land. But to use the word “never” in that context simply showed his own inflexibility, and his desire to put his politics before the good of the USA.
Oooo, Tyler, nice – you get a square on the bingo board too! Good quote. The one I heard most definitely had the word “destiny” “choice” and “healthcare” in sequence. Wouldn’t forget the destiny part. (gag). =)
The best part of the D&C was Cardinal Dolan’s benediction. He was the only person on stage to speak about protecting the life of the preborn. And religious freedom.
He had a serious tone when he was talking and he was very comfortable. He brought some light into that dark convention hall.
Praise the Lord.
Missed that, tyler. He said that?! Awesome.
Was everyone squirming in their seats?
Yes, a lot people were fidgiting, some raised their heads, some raised their eyebrows, and others pursed their lips. I didn’t see anyone’s jaw drop, but I am sure that was just because the camera could could only capture a few shots of the crowd.
It was refreshing to see.
Wow, Caroline Kennedy invoking her Catholic faith to impugn state restrictions on abortion was a brain-freeze of a thing.
Good grief.
At least they were uncomfortable. The calm expression on President Obama’s face when Eric Metaxas spoke of abortion at the National Prayer Breakfast was frightening.
Caroline Kennedy – a disgrace. This is one time when I wish you could erase what people say about themselves.
Rasqual, she is pure disappointment. She even said it while smiling.
Cardinal Dolan CRUSHED the heathen. All the naysayers who spoke ill of him for speaking at the D&C were proven misguided. He went into the devil’s lair and spoke the truth. ” Dear God bless America! You who reign forever and ever. Amen!”
Thank God for the Cardinal.
Cardinal Dolan’s Benediction at Democratic National Convention 2012
He said that? To the DNC?!? Whoa. I am impressed.
When I first heard Dolan was going to the D&C, I wondered if he would say something like this. Then I thought, nah, that would be considered to impolite or something, he wouldn’t do that. I’m glad he proved me wrong.
I wonder — could the Pro-Life Democrats be persuaded to found a Liberal Life Party?
Where can I sign up (raises hand and says Me! Me Me!)
Chris, i wouldn’t want a lot of religious Jews, Christians, or Muslims in any organization I was part of.
Well, I guess you wouldn’t have been a part of the abolitionist movement, the Confessing Church in Nazi Germany, the early women’s rights movement, or the civil rights movement, Hal.
Wow, way to go, Cardinal! You have to admire a man who prays that at the DNC!!! What beautiful, bold words. I can’t believe Obama didn’t choke through the whole thing. Those words are the antitheses of everything the DNC stands for now.
AMEN!!
I pray that all of these political speaking events will inspire constituents of all ages to think very clearly and gain a full understanding about what our country’s future would be withput religious freedom and the right to life.
Although I am not religious nor Catholic, I admire the Cardinal. He spoke with conviction and in truth and love in front of an audience that despises everything he discussed in his speech: love, light and life.
Kudos to him. May he have the strength to stay strong against all the hate and backlash.
They were at the forefront of fighting Communism during the Cold War. A Democrat- Harry Truman- led America to fight a war to stop Communism in Korea just five years after WWII. It was not until the 1970’s that Communist-sympathizing radicals infiltrated the party and even took leadership positions.
