“House of Cards” episode features photos of abortion victims
I’m suddenly hearing and reading about the television series, House of Cards, everywhere. The show’s backdrop, quoting Wikipedia:
Set in present-day Washington, D.C., House of Cards is the story of Frank Underwood (Kevin Spacey), a Democrat from South Carolina… and House Majority Whip who, after getting passed over for appointment as Secretary of State, decides to exact his revenge on those who betrayed him. The series also stars Robin Wright….
House of Cards is produced by Netflix, which releases an entire season all at once for viewing via its livestream service. Netflix dumped all 13 episodes of season two on February 14. This season Underwood has been appointed vice president. We featured House of Cards in a quote of the day on February 22, wherein Underwood’s wife Claire (Wright) admitted in a CNN interview (screenshot below) to having three abortions – one because of a rape, which was a lie, but which was fine by feminists. As an aside, blog reader Del noted that Claire sure looks a lot like Planned Parenthood CEO Cecile Richards. And both the fictional Claire and real Cecile are heads of large nonprofits. The resemblance is indeed notable up to this point. Beneath the facade, Claire is manipulative and evil. But I digress. Following the revelation of Claire’s three abortions, House of Cards mischaracterizes pro-life response in typical Hollywood style. According to National Right to Life News:
In episodes following the abortion becoming public, pro-life advocates are portrayed not only as angry and hateful–picketing Claire’s events with signs reading “Shame” and “Baby Killer”- but far worse. Claire’s husband… remarks that a portion of the country sees her as a “baby killer.” She receives death threats and in one episode, a deranged young man tries to bring explosives to her house after he finds out his own wife had an abortion without his knowledge.
But there is a point in the story line where fiction meets reality. Gregg Cunningham, CEO of Center for Bio-Ethical Reform, wrote in a February 23 email alert that some of CBR’s abortion victim imagery was used in a protest scene:
CBR appears in the credits of a recent episode in this series because we licensed the House of Cards production company to use our abortion photos. Though we did not expect our pictures to make the final edit, our photos did appear beginning near the 20 minute point of season 2, Episode 11. Our pictures are depicted on signs held by protestors who are seen from inside a slowly passing car. Barack Obama is a fan of House of Cards and tweets about the series. We thank God for the opportunity to force him to look at the bodies of the babies butchered by his abortion policies. A few years ago, British TV Channel 4 used substantial quantities of our abortion video in a widely-viewed documentary on abortion. One London abortion clinic told a reporter the next day that their business had dropped off because of the documentary. Abortion imagery saves lives.
Here’s one screenshot of the abortion victim signage from inside the motorcade. Click to enlarge… UPDATE 11:10a: After I wrote this post I was reminded of two times, of I’m sure many, when President Obama was actually forced to pass photos of abortion victims in a motorcade. Who knows if he averted his eyes, but the truth was placed in front of him. These photos, which include abortion victims, come from Created Equal (click to enlarge)…
That’s very small imagery but those truly interested in seeing more won’t have to look far and those who would have looked the other way, — those who are so concerned about shielding themselves from what is “negative” while voting for the perpetrators of that negativity, will of course be divided and corralled further into the ignorance-is-bliss party / camp that is so cozy for them at the moment. Of course anytime they show abortion in media, I cringe because it’s never with the intent to help women. Breaking my heart. It’s ALWAYS with the intent to try to convince women that ‘choice’ is ‘the only choice’ once more driving home their horrific ironic and dishonorable mysogynistic joke / lie played out on innocent well-meaning women every single day of their lives: that women need men (and aggressive self-righteous women) to tell them the difference between good and evil, when even in our own bodies there is the basic right to life. I think most men certainly would not be so quick to push “Choice” if it was in the middle of the coital act and she just suddenly wanted to stop having sex-but it’s fine to butcher and reject if it’s a fetus that is inside of her. So there you go, once more a double standard protecting selfish adulterous men and putting women and children on the bock as commodity-but none of that makes the cut in house of cards, which is why I think it’s probably a boring vehicle for boring content; like a mini-van with a bunch of political posters for some phony politician, who only intends to say what the party-of-pre-fashioned quotes wants him to say. Those photos mean there’s something actually in there to be talked about. NOOIICE!!!

Who the heck holds protests signs with sticks?
NO, I’m not talking about the March for Life. I’m talking about signs outside of events honoring pro-aborts.

EEK! I made it into a main article! This is awkward.
I believe it was intentional. From the beginning, the writers knew that Claire’s three abortions and resulting childlessness would be central to her character. I imagine that, looking upon the tall, blond and willowy frame of Robin Wright, somebody in charge said, “We just have to give her a Cece Richards haircut.”
Or maybe not. Cece is not a cultural icon except to pro-life and pro-abortion activists.

Doesn’t anyone else find it disturbing that the President has time to watch shows like this? with all that is happening in the world, and Joe Biden being the one to talk to other heads of nations, I would think that Obama would be too busy doing presidential stuff to watch television and to golf as much as he does.

America is better off when the President and his executive Cabinet members do what they do best…. which means watching television and playing golf.
Obama’s approval numbers tend to improve as long as he keeps is face out of the news.

No? Everyone needs some time to relax. And I don’t want stressed out people who worked 100 hour weeks making important decisions, that seems like a bad idea. Have you ever seen the before and after photos of Bush, showing a rather ridiculous amount of aging in eight years? Presidency is stressful and I don’t begrudge the dude time to watch an hour long television show, he can’t work 24/7.

Good post Jill. I completely agree with NRLC characterization of the series as defamatory of anti-abortion activism. We never doubted that Hollywood would smear and slur our activists. But the House of Cards writers would have done that with or without our abortion photos. Our goal was to make certain that millions of viewers who thought they knew about abortion would be forced to look at it for the first time in their lives. The shock of that horror will linger in the minds of many long after they have forgotten the story line. Gregg Cunningham — CBR.

He’s an amateur.

Hi phillymiss. How are you? I love your post. He’s an amateur, an empty suit and an pro-abort to boot who never saw an abortion or an intended abortion or an abortion law he did not love. Just ask Jill. Voted against BAIPA not once, not twice, not three but four times. (correct me on the number of times mods or Jill if I am wrong about the number of times). He is not pro-choice but a pro-abort. You have got to be a cold-blooded son-of-a-gun to pull that one off, voting to make sure that a woman who paid for a dead baby get one, (even if the baby survives an abortion and is born alive). He wants to guarantee that the abortionist delivers a dead baby, no matter what. Hillary, the Maggie Award winner and the darling of PP, NARAL, and Emily’s List could not even compete with that.
