Planned Parenthood captures abortion monopoly in Texas
UPDATE 7/24, 5:20a: We got great news yesterday, that the abortion rate in Texas has dropped by 13% since November, when the new pro-life law began taking effect. This represents 9,200 babies saved from abortion!
7/23, 7:32a: On September 1 a new pro-life law will take effect in Texas that requires abortion clinics to meet the same standards as ambulatory surgical centers, abortionists to have admitting privileges at hospitals within 30 miles of the clinic, and the abortion pill RU-486 to be dispensed per FDA protocol.
And on that day Planned Parenthood will seize control of the Texas abortion market, since it will at that point own six* of the eight remaining abortion clinics.
Only two years ago there were 44 abortion clinics in Texas. The new law is purging smaller and subpar chop shops, including some of Planned Parenthood’s own.
But no surprise, the United States’ largest abortion business is seizing this opportunity to re-expand and drive the remaining independent abortion clinics under, so as to capture the Lone Star State’s lucrative abortion trade. The abortion death toll there (77,592 in 2010) accounts for almost 8% of all abortions committed in the U.S. annually.
Ever the liar, Planned Parenthood purchased property for two new clinics in Dallas and San Antonio after it claimed the law would doom abortion access.
Planned Parenthood killing the competition
Moreover, Dallas and San Antonio already had established abortion ambulatory surgical centers that qualify to remain open under HB2 – they’re just not Planned Parenthood clinics.
Texas is a huge state, so there are several “unserved” locations Planned Parenthood could have picked to add new abortion clinics.
But Planned Parenthood chose instead to compete head to head with rivals, demonstrating it is cut-throat in more ways than one. Any Planned Parenthood exec such as CEO Cecile Richards who complains about declining “abortion access” in Texas is a hypocrite. They are purposefully making Planned Parenthood a contributing factor, demonstrating once again their concern is not about women but about money.
Doubling its abortion market share
In 2011, Planned Parenthood owned approximately 14 of the state’s 44 abortion clinics, or 32% of the market share, according to Emily Horne of Texas Right to Life. After the dust settles on September 1 Planned Parenthood will own as much as 75%* of the market share, more than doubling its cut of abortion profits in Texas.
One additional bit of Planned Parenthood hypocrisy, as noted by Texas Right to Life:
Planned Parenthood has purchased an existing ASC [in Dallas, pictured right] and is making minor renovations in order to use it for abortion.
The news comes after Planned Parenthood officials insisted that the perceived burden of converting their facilities into ambulatory surgical centers would be too great and would force them to cease their operations. Melaney Linton of Planned Parenthood Gulf Coast said last year, “You can’t just do a few renovations and convert a facility that is already existing.” And yet, converting a “facility that is already existing” is exactly what Planned Parenthood is doing….
__________
*The actual number of Planned Parenthood and independent abortion clinics that will be left standing in Texas on September 1 varies slightly by news story. While RH Reality Check says Planned Parenthood will have six, Healthcare Daily says it may have seven, and Planned Parenthood’s own website says it has five. Meanwhile, several news sources, like Kaiser, claim the total number of Texas abortion clinics in September will be six.
It is possible that one or more of the nonabortion clinics Planned Parenthood is “renovat[ing],” in Addison, Arlington, Cedar Hill, and Lewisville, is covertly being converted into an abortion clinic. Or Planned Parenthood is secretly prepping a brand new site as I type.
And, of course, Chicken Little abortion proponents may be low balling the grand total for drama.
Current abortion clinic count
At any rate, for those trying to keep track, here is the current tally of Texas abortion clinics that will remain open on September 1. The count is in flux but at present is eight total, with Planned Parenthood owning five. Thanks to Karen at the Catholic Pro-life Committee and Rachel and Emily at Texas Right to Life for help with the compilation:

The advantage of monopoly is that a single opponent is easier to attack. Obama won’t be around much longer; we need to continue the effort to defund Planned Parenthood. We have subsidized them with $half-billion taxpayer dollars per year for long enough.
Just remember that our work does not end when the clinics close down. There will still be doctors and hospitals that kill. We need to restore hearts, so that abortion becomes unthinkable once again.
I don’t understand why this is an issue. If the goal of the restrictions is to have better funded and equipped facilities, it seems natural that larger and better funded operators will be all that’s left. If the goal is to run abortion providers out of the state, that would raise some constitutional concerns.
Hal,
If this leaves Planned Parenthood in the not-so-enviable position of having to explain its 19th century survival of the fittest mentality (that’d bring nothing but tears to J.R. Ewing) let them deal with all the headaches of having to eventually close them down and having to explain why their overreach has boomeranged big time. Yeah, let ’em also do any cleanin’ up for a Texas sized scandal if unbeknownst to them, they have another Dr. Gosnell on their payrolls.
C’MON TEXAS!!!

Sorry for shouting. I’m really excited for this fall’s campaign.
If you live near an abortion mill, see how you can help save babies and moms and close the mill. If you don’t, contact the nearest one and sign up to pray, even from home.
Prayer works.
Is Ruth street in Dallas shutting down?
We have closed one here in Ohio. We are now focusing on the clinic that killed LaKisha Wilson. A healthy 22 year old woman walked into that clinic and she had a 22 month healthy pregnancy. 2 other clinics turned her away but Preterm decided to give it a whirl. She died in that clinic. Idky she felt so desparate to abort except she already had a 2 year old. She was radiant and glowing in her pregnancy pics. And Columbus ( who refused her an abortion ) is 3 hours away from Cleveland. Shed be alive today had she not walked into that death clinic. Now a 2 year old boy is motherless and a family has lost their daughter. I wonder if they even know CPR. Coroner ruled her death a heart attack brought about by an elective abortion. And apparently they heavily sedated her post op.
Do any of the people commenting on here realize that all of the so-called pro-life legislation that was passed last year in Texas did nothing to work toward abolishing human abortion? Are any of you ready to start working toward abolishing human abortion, or are you going to continue regulating it?

“…she had a 22 month healthy pregnancy.”
A little long for a healthy pregnancy.
Megan she had a healthy baby that she wanted to abort. She was 22 weeks. I dont understand what you meant.
Diana any ideas on how to abolish it? Im all ears!
Step up contraception/birth control.
“There will still be doctors and hospitals that kill.”
Does anyone here know if a list of doctors/hospitals that perform abortions exists? What about a list of prolife doctors and nurses?
I’ve heard rumors that a now-deceased doctor near my hometown did abortions. It would have been nice to know if this were true when he was living so the prolifers could have gone elsewhere.
Okay Megan I see I goofed 22 weeks.
Whats the difference though? Infanticide is on the rise and it looks like a lot of women kill their kids at any age. Is the kid a burden? Toss them kill them ….infanticide anyone? Its becoming the new norm thanks to abortion. If those 2 HOT CAR parents aren’t guilty as sin I will eat my hat. Its a matter of time before they arrest mom.
heather I am totally with you. I understand the first thing the mom said when they told her the baby was dead “oh he must have left him in the car”. WHAT’S UP WITH THAT? They had not even told her how her baby died and she says “he must have left him in the car”.
Prolifer L ….What a darling little boy and a terrible story. That buffoon is a liar and im sure cops are totally onto them. Why did mom hire a lawyer and leave the state. I know from my own experience when my husband died I couldnt and didnt cry for a month because shock protected me. I just dont understand her perfect composure and saying she wouldnt bring Cooper back. I would give anything to have my husband back! Both parents are guilty and like you said mom knew he was dead when she went to get him. As for the dad he can have his child free life after he is convicted of cold blooded murder. Death penalty or life in prison. No more sexting pal!
Anyway isnt what child free life what abortion is all about? Until you dont want it to be or you may never have any living children by choice. I believe little Cooper Harris may have been wanted but something went wrong in that marriage and both parents planned this. Yes Hot car death child free life and what is life like in prison were all researched on the computer. Hmmmmmm all must have been researched for the heck of it. IMO mom and dad could have given him to DHS or a family member. They are both cold blooded murderers.
ObamaCare is going to be a real windfall for Planned Parenthood & many other killing places. It’s going to be a bloodbath.
Diana any ideas on how to abolish it? Im all ears!
Heather, you have to hold abortion victim photos outside of churches and tell post-abortive women that they’re murderers. You also have to be a Christian (a real Christian mind you – Catholics are not real Christians and are in fact the reason abortion is still legal) and preach the Gospel every chance you get, regardless of whether it would be the most effective way to convince someone to rethink their views on abortion. If you seek unity with a Satanic religious system like Catholicism, God should let a meteorite strike you. So be sure to bring your bullhorn to pro-life marches and rallies so you can tell them this.
Most importantly, there is no room for rational behaviour. It’s better to leave all 44 abortion clinics open than to close down 36-38 of them. Anything that doesn’t entail immediately making every abortion illegal (and prosecuting women who have them as murderers) should be vehemently opposed, as it’s an immoral compromise and tantamount to supporting murder (never mind the fact that the slave trade was also abolished incrementally – facts are not important). Using incremental pro-life bills to fundraise is also an affront to God (selling t-shirts and other swag on your website where you have pictures of hot girls wearing them, on the other hand, is acceptable). However, you are allowed to spend the better part of a year savaging Mitt Romney because he supports a rape exception before voting for a congressional candidate that favours the same exception without being considered hypocritical or even negligent.
