Pro-life sting exposes Voice of Choice as all talk

On June 5 Voice of Choice’s Todd Stave received an email complaining that pro-life activist Tony Massey was harassing caterers delivering orders from Udi’s Foods in Denver to the Planned Parenthood of the Rocky Mountains mega-abortion clinic.

The reason I know the date Stave received that email is because in actuality it came from Tony, who decided to conduct a little reconnaissance mission to test Voice of Choice’s potency.

As I’ve written previously (here, here, and here) Stave launched Voice of Choice last fall to retaliate against pro-lifers who protest at abortion clinics and homes of abortionists. To that end Stave distributes personal information of targeted pro-lifers to abortion proponents with encouragement to harass them.

For this Stave has garnered accolades from the Washington Post, Rachel Maddow, and Howard Stern. In March NARAL bestowed Todd with the Jan Yanehiro Speak Out for Choice Award.

Last October Stave launched “The Denver Project,” because those vociferous pro-lifers in the Mile High City are particularly onerous to the other side. After targeting seven of our activists, Stave claimed two weeks later:

Today, as a result of thousands Voice of Choice volunteers, the active protesters in Denver number HALF their ranks….

In reality, the seven received an average of 32 calls each, which they actually thrived on:

Imagine our delight when we realized that the lost were calling us!  What an awesome opportunity to share the gospel along with the truth about abortion.  Answering the phone is much easier than standing on the street or going door to door.  One woman who called admitted that she believes that late term abortion is murder.  She had no idea that Todd Stave rents to a late term abortionist.  Dozens of people, who otherwise would not have heard the gospel, heard it today, thanks to Todd Stave.  There is just one problem; some of the Denver pro lifers that didn’t make the list are upset.  They want in on the phone witnessing bonanza too.

I know these pro-life activists and can verify they would relish calls from abortion proponents. Stave knew they could be very persuasive, which is why he specified, “DO NOT ARGUE WITH THEM,” i.e., do not trust your pro-abortion ideology enough to engage the other side.

So most certainly pro-life numbers did not shrink. I’m told on average 5-6 pro-lifers protest at the Denver mill Monday through Friday, with anywhere from 20-300 Catholics, depending on the occasion, praying there on Saturdays. Here’s a photo of the core group in January…

But back to Tony. He was upset about Stave’s mischaracterization of the results of his “Denver Project,” which is what prompted his undercover sting via alias “Brandie McMillian.”

Stave did not verify Brandie’s authenticity, and on June 7 wrote the pseudo-Udi’s employee that the following email was being sent to “10k people,” which I, as one of the 10k, did indeed receive…

… and also tweeted:

One of the phone numbers was wrong, but whatever. Bottom line is as of yesterday Tony had received a whopping 18 calls, and four of them came from pro-lifers wishing him well. The video of Tony’s that Stave reposted has been viewed only 109 times:

I’m not sure why Stave posted the video. The only notoriety it brings is upon Udi’s and Planned Parenthood, certainly not pro-lifers. Pro-lifers want the world to hear Tony’s messages.

And I doubt Udi’s is anxious for this kind of publicity, since one of its divisions was coincidentally bought out by Smart Balance on June 1.  I’m sure if Todd had bothered to ask  Udi’s, it would have told him not to do what he did. I expect the last thing either Udi’s or Smart Balance wants is to have links connecting Udi’s to the abortion giant pop up first on Google.

Kudos to Tony Massey for his willingness to take heat to expose a ruse.

Stanek late weekend question 4-1-12: Is turnabout fair play?

Unfortunately, my traditional Saturday morning posting of the weekend question got derailed by hackers, so here is my late weekend entry.

I wrote March 30 about a flier being distributed in the neighborhood of Germantown, Maryland, late-term abortion clinic owner Todd Stave, pictured right, which depicts him as equivalent to a Nazi. The fliers included Stave’s home phone number.

Now Stave is “turning the tables,” according to a supportive Washington Post columnist:

But his tormentors crossed the line last fall when a big group showed up at his daughter’s middle school on the first day of classes and again at back-to-school night. They had signs displaying his name and contact information as well as those gory images of the fetuses.

“What parent wants to have that conversation with an 11-year-old on the first day of school?” he fumed.

Soon after that, the harassing calls started coming to his home. By the dozens, at all hours. Friends asked him how they could help. He began to take down the names and phone numbers of people who made unwanted calls. And he gave the information to his friends and asked them to call these folks back.

“In a very calm, very respectful voice, they said that the Stave family thanks you for your prayers,” he said. “They cannot terminate the lease, and they do not want to. They support women’s rights.”

This started with a dozen or so friends, and then it grew. Soon, more than a thousand volunteers were dialing.

If they could find the information, Stave’s supporters would ask during the callbacks how the children in the family were doing and mention their names and the names of their schools. “And then,” Stave said, “we’d tell them that we bless their home on such and such street,” giving the address.

The family of a protester who called Stave’s home could get up to 5,000 calls in return.

Harsh? Nope.

“We gave them back what they gave us,” he said. Do unto others, and so forth.

The supporters came so fast and in such big numbers, Stave founded a group, Voice of Choice . And now there are about 3,000 volunteers ready to make calm, reasoned calls to the homes of people who bombard doctors, landlords and their families with protests at homes or schools across the country.

Stave clearly enjoys turning the tables after decades of not fighting back.

“What? They don’t want unsolicited calls to their homes?” he asked.

Several questions: Do you think involving the children of either abortion proponents or opponents is fair game? Do you think what Stave’s group is doing is comparable to what pro-life activists do? Do you agree turnabout is fair play? Are the goals of both groups employing these tactics the same?

Owners of clinic where Carhart killed patient delinquent on taxes

Cheryl Sullenger from Operation Rescue gave me the heads up. Click to enlarge…

The owners of the building housing Germantown Reproductive Health Services, where late-term abortionist LeRoy Carhart fatally wounded both 29-yr-old Jennifer Morbelli and her 33-week-old preborn baby Madison Leigh last week, are behind on their taxes.

Todd Stave and his sister, Nancy Stave Samuels, inherited the building from their abortionist father, Carl Edward Stave, in 2000.

Samuels runs the abortion business itself. Carhart is the hired hack.

Miss Taylor of the Maryland Department of Assessments & Taxation told me today Stave and Samuels did not file their required Annual Report/Personal Property Return in 2012, due last April 16, along with a $300 filing fee. The Resident Agent listed on the form above is their attorney, Stanley Tashoff.

“This shows sloppy corporate legal etiquette,” Thomas More Society attorney Tom Brejcha wrote me in an email, “which makes you wonder as well about their medical etiquette.”

Perhaps Todd has been preoccupied trying to make his organization Voice of Choice a bit more effective.

Hundreds gather at Carhart abortion clinic to demand justice for mother’s death

ihearttj99-1351318971_600 2Read backstory, “BREAKING: Carhart’s victims identified.”

Over 250 people gathered at Germantown Reproductive Health Services abortion clinic in Germantown, Maryland, this morning to demand justice for the death of 29-year-old Jennifer McKenna Morbelli (pictured right), who perished at the hand of late-term abortionist LeRoy Carhart on February 7, along with her 33-week-old preborn baby, Madison Leigh.

As protesters gathered outside, Carhart carried on with his abortion business as usual inside.

ABC News and the Washington Post were among news outlets that attended the press conference/prayer vigil.

Representative from several organizations spoke, including Father Frank Pavone (pictured below) of Priests for Life, Rev. Patrick Mahoney of the Christian Defense Coalition, Day Gardner of the National Black Pro-Life Union, Kristan Hawkins of Students for Life of America, Mallory Quigley from the Susan B. Anthony List, Michael Mortelli of the Maryland Coalition for Life, Anna Higgins of Family Research Council, and Catherine Glenn Foster of Alliance Defending Freedom, as well as three local pastors.

The group made six demands:

1. That Shady Grove Adventist Hospital, where Jennifer died, file a formal complaint with the Maryland Board of Physicians. It would seem to me a pragmatic move, if nothing else, for the hospital to distance itself as far as possible from Carhart, since lawsuits in abundance should be anticipated.

2. That the Maryland Board of Physicians revoke Carhart’s license, which never should have been given in the first place, since he lied on his application.

3. That the Maryland Department of Health and Mental Hygiene close down the clinic during the investigations.

4. That building owner Todd Stave close down the clinic until investigations are complete, again, for pragmatic self-preservation purposes, if nothing else.

5. That the Executive Park Condo Association shut down the clinic until investigations are complete. The association has the ability to control what takes place inside its office park.

6. That the Maryland House and Senate each pass Pain Capable Fetal Protection bills that have already been submitted this legislative session.  SB 456 and HB 1312 would ban abortions in Maryland past the point when preborn babies can feel pain, 20 weeks from fertilization. This law would have saved both baby Madison’s life as well as her mother’s.

See video of the press conference here.

What is wrong with this flier?

A couple weeks ago a lady struck up a conversation with me as I sat enjoying the weather at an outdoor cafe in Washington, D.C.  Not long into it she wondered what I did for a living. I told her pro-life work, which always elicits an interesting response.

But this one was new. “So, are you one of those pro-life crazies?” she asked.

A bit taken aback I hesitated, then answered, “By the definition I expect you use, yes, I am. I believe in protesting and showing photos of aborted babies.”

“That’s good,” she said. “I always ask that question to people who tell me they’re pro-life, and if they say they’re not radical about it, I ask them how can they consider themselves pro-life. If they really believe abortion kills babies, they should be going all out to stop it.”

I told her she’d make a great pro-lifer.

This brings me to a new flier making waves, coincidentally in that same neck of the woods. It is directed at Todd Stave, who I wrote a couple weeks ago has launched a new website, Voice of Choice, to out pro-life activists, and who is co-owner of the Germantown, Maryland, mill where late-term abortionist LeRoy Carhart kills children. A pro-life activist in the area has determined “no justice, no peace” for Stave and has been distributing this flier. Click to enlarge…
The flier is getting press. From Washington Jewish Week, March 28:

When Gary Cohen first saw the flier that was left in his Rockville door last week, he was “horrified. It was horrible. It freaked my kids out. The whole thing was really over the top.”…

The fliers were distributed March 21 in one neighborhood in Rockville and another in Potomac. Living in the two neighborhoods are the landlords of a woman’s clinic in Germantown that performs abortions.

Todd Stave and his sister, Nancy Samuels, own the Germantown building, having inherited it when their [abortionist] father passed away….

I’ll have more on this in my weekend question tomorrow, but for now, what do you think of the flier? Someone from the other side sent it to me, wanting me to condemn it, but I couldn’t. I responded by asking what was inaccurate about it.

Abortion proponents profile pro-life leaders and activists

Well it didn’t take long for my new son-in-law to stir up trouble in the U.S. I couldn’t be prouder.

He would be Kiwi Andy Moore, who launched a couple months ago, about the same time Operation Rescue’s Troy Newman launched

And look at the hornets they have stirred. Pro-life friend Leslie forwarded me this email she received a couple days ago. Click to enlarge…

So now pro-lifers will know if they’re worth their salt. Should they make Voice of Choice, they have arrived.

Speaking of profiling, Todd Stave is the co-owner, along with his sister Nancy, of Germantown Reproductive Health Services in Maryland, one of the mills where infamous late-term abortionist LeRoy Carhart kills babies.

The siblings inherited the business in 2000 from their father, abortionist Carl Edward Stave. Lovely family dynasty. Read more here, on the profile page pro-lifers created about Stave.

At any rate, abortion proponents can no longer accuse pro-lifers of covertly promoting violence against abortionists by posting their personal information. Surely abortion proponents don’t have that in mind by this venture, because surely they condemn violence.

Blog enhancements

We’re always on the lookout to tweak the blog to make it better.

FYI, here were a few enhancements made in the past several days:

  • Comments will now be open on all older posts. We originally had to close them after two weeks due to spam, but that is now under control.
  • Added a new and better print plugin.
  • Added some features to comments, including buttons for copy, paste, and blockquotes. You can now also drag the comment box to make it bigger if you need more space when you’re typing.

I have a question for you on comments. We have the ability to nest comments, which would let you respond to a comment after the comment. Would you like that feature added, or no?

As an aside, most of you know the site was compromised March 30 and 31. Hackers succeeded in injecting scripts that directed you to spam and malware sites. It was a sophisticated hack that took two experts several hours to find.

As I said before, we will likely never know who did it, but the break-in coincidentally occurred soon after I began writing about the new Voice Of Choice website, which promises to retaliate against pro-life activists.

As a result of this incident we have signed on with the security service Sucuri, which was recommended to us by another pro-life group. I mention this as a word to the wise to other pro-life bloggers and webmasters.
