Entries for August, 2013

Back from vacation…

I’ve done “blog light” the past 2-1/2 weeks, away from my desk quite a bit in lieu of family time – visiting  Andy and Daena in DC and camping (Starved Rock for Illinoisans) with the grandsons, Rich and my parents. If you’ve been wondering where I was, that’s where. Tomorrow I’ll be back. Thanks to Kelli, […]

Stanek weekend video: A random act of kindness

IMG_6883by Hans Johnson

It was a beautiful Sunday to attend a Milwaukee Brewers / Washington Nationals ballgame. With Sarah Kooiman and her husband were their young sons Isaiah, Micah, and Thomas. The boys’ boisterous behavior could well have bothered the young man seated in front of them with his girlfriend. Many men would yell out, “Hey lady! How about controlling your kids?” But that wasn’t the case this time.

Pro-life vid of the day: Prince William, on being a new dad

by LauraLoo In an interview with CNN this week, Prince William proves he’s just like other parents – only too happy to show off his new son, George. I felt this part of the interview (full transcript) was his best commentary:  “I think the last few weeks for me have been just a very different […]

Pro-life vid of the day: Duck Dynasty star blasts abortion culture

Duck-Dynastyby Hans Johnson

A&E’s Duck Dynasty is one of the hottest shows on televison. It started out successfully enough, but has since skyrocketed to the point that last week’s fourth season debut was the highest-rated non-scripted cable show ever, drawing 11.8 million viewers.

Lauryn Hill: Choosing life for son Zion “best decision I ever made”

hillThe decision to have her first child was one of the major change’s in 24-year-old [Lauryn] Hill’s life. Many in the music industry advised her to have an abortion, but Hill resisted the pressure. It was a choice she never regretted, and a quandary she details in the song To Zion (video below).

“That song,” she says, “is about the revelation that my son [Zion] was to me. I had always made decisions for other people, making everybody else happy, and once I had him that was really the first decision that was unpopular for me. It was one that was based on my happiness and not what other people wanted for me or for themselves.

BREAKING: Biola apologizes, endorses use of graphic abortion images

imageBiola president Dr. Barry Corey, pictured right, has issued a public letter of apology for retaliatory actions staff members of his Christian university took against pro-life student Diana Jimenez in June for showing graphic images of abortion on campus:

For actions on our part that were perceived to be heavy-handed and retaliatory, I have apologized to her and stand by this apology publicly. I acknowledge and regret our errors, and steps have been taken to correct them….

In so many ways, Diana is the kind of student with the deep Christian convictions I hoped to see when I came to Biola six years ago. In her convictions about saving the unborn, she represents what Biola is about—the desire to speak up against injustices that break the heart of God. Like Diana, Biola is and has been passionately pro-life.

A campus security guard was caught on video threatening to have Jimenez arrested, and the director of the nursing program, Dr. Susan Elliott, ordered her staff not to write letters of recommendation on Jimenez’s behalf.
